Yes an old face back in the chair as your President. Thank you to all those members who turned out for the Cruise and the AGM followed by a wonderful afternoon on the hill at Hidden Valley Raceway. A special thank you to Wilko for leading your committee team once again last year and in previous years. Wilko has done a great job and we all thank him for his efforts. He had indicated he wanted a well deserved spell as President so I offered to take his place. I have introduced a committee structure to give others the opportunity to stand up to the plate and take on some responsibility for managing this great club and its events. The same faces have been at the helm for far too long and need a break so it is my intent to involve more members in running the Monthly functions to get a feel of what the committee is all about so in the very near future they can take on a committee position. Any club needs to rotate its committees and executive to get fresh ideas and make changes to suit its core membership base. Ian, George and myself have been on the committee since day 1, about 12 years. I was interested to see the EK Holden advert in this newsletter. It is from my old home town and my father was a car salesman with the opposition Holden dealer in the town thru the EJ HR era. Thanks to our Secretary George for putting in the hard work organising the new trailer and doing the fit out and setup. Members that have seen it have given great praise. A job well done. To those who supported the Katherine Festival Car and Bike show I am sure you had a great time and thank you for participating. It is a weekend not to be missed. We did bring home the trophy for the visiting club with the most entrants. Should any member wish to assist with organising any functions in the future please show your hand to any of the committee members. Let s all look forward to a great year ahead with participation by all members. Cheers John Palamountain From the editor Well my time at the reigns has come to an end, but by no means does it mean the end of my involvement in the club. Standing down as President will better enable me to enjoy the things I like about the club, compiling the newsletters and managing the upcoming website as well as organising certain functions. I wish to thank members and the committee for there support over the last year. I have been a committee member since 2005 AGM and had at least four of those years as President I have had many a fond memory working with the club and I hope that this will continue well into the future. 3 The new club trailer The infamous club trailer; After living up to my name and getting grumpier each time I had to unload and re load the tradies trailer at club events and eventually had some support from some committee members it was decided to upgrade and replace the old beast. So I did, out of Sydney. After two frightening freight quotes I had it transported to Adelaide where I went and saw my EH and towed the new baby home at one third the cost. Towed like a dream and made it in one piece. It all came about at the V8 s when the original builder noticed the old girl was getting a bit wrinkled around the edges and needed a touch up. It turned out he owed Kerry Kyraciou a favour. So to cover the cost Kerry donated the favour to the club. I thought this was an opportunity to upgrade but the favour was not that big. I asked what a new one would cost and supplied foto s and the reply was ^%#$ couldn t build that for under $25k, so I said I can get one for $6.5k. Several head scratching days working out minor additions it has all come together pretty well. The hard part was where does all the club crap fit but now that s pretty well sorted. (after the BBQ went leg up on the AGM trip it has been relocated, someone went round corners a bit fast). Thanks to John from Shannon s for organising the club logo s, they really set it off. Took it to Katherine and had several comments on a top set up so if you have not seen it yet come along to an event to check it out, probably the Oz day ute run will be its next outing unless someone else tows it. 4 AGM Just another perfect day in Paradise, with a great line up of Classic Holden s lined up at truck city. After some light-hearted discussion we took a leisurely drive to the Dripstone cliffs. The sea was a beautiful clear aqua. Wendy Johnson rightly pointed out that it is the same colour as her LH Torana. As I said, it was just a perfect day but there was business to be done. After a quick jump start of David Clarks FlaminJ it was a quick cruise to the Hidden Valley club rooms. The General meeting following the AGM was also a quick affair and it gives members a chance to see how the club is run. I'd like to add that all members are welcome and encouraged to attend general meetings, usually held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Hidden Valley Club rooms. Down to business at hand. The AGM went off without a hitch (without an agenda as well) with a slight change in the executive position. I stood down as President. That was the only change in the line up and the rest of the Committee positions remained unchanged. After the meetings it was time to christen the new club trailer. The setting couldn't have been better, sitting on the hill under the shade of the magnificent trees over looking the track where circuit racing was well underway. Great action, great food with great company, a great way to spend the day. CHCC News September

5 Katherine Festival Once again, MVEC Katherine have shown us the utmost hospitality in a well organised weekend. Not only was it a sensational car show, the whole weekend went well, great food great company, great entertainment. In a nut shell, fantastic!!! We met at the Power Water social club in Katherine for a sensational BBQ lunch and a natter with old friends before partaking in a cruise to the showgrounds via Pete & Sandy Balfour s rural block and a lap of town. We all met up early at United Coolalinga in anticipation of a great weekend away, I thought I had a 'bit of a rig' rocking up in the HG Monaro with restored Yamaha on the back of a trailer but then Trevor and Liz Raggart had pushed the envelope in arriving in a car transporter with their pride and joys, as well as Rodney Child s gorgeous HQ ute. Trevor said that he would have a recovery vehicle but nothing prepared me for the site of three utes on the back of a car carrier. After a couple of photos it was off for a lovely cruise down to Katherine with over a dozen member cars, including Grumpy bringing up the rear with the club trailer. The Katherine show grounds proved to be a much better venue with a nice shady 'main drag' to line up the cars and plenty of indoor space for the "elite's". This would have been the biggest car and bike show Katherine has ever seen with over 70 cars on display. Out of those 70 vehicles the Classic Holden Car club came home with several trophies as well. Albert W ilson took home a trophy for 'best Japanese' with his Skyline (parked next to his HZ). I won 'best original' for my HG GTS (thanks go to Liz and Trevor for swapping entrant numbers) and David Clark won 'peoples choice' with his FlaminJ. The club also won the perpetual trophy for the best represented visiting club. In total we had 15 club cars on display including Jim and Julie Dowling s who trailored their beautiful purple 'one tonner' all the way from Tennant Creek. CHCC News September

6 After the show it was on to Pete and Sandy's to set up camp and get together for the evening feast. This is where MVEC Katherine really shine. They have a tight knit group of people that put in the hard yards to make sure everything is just right. Great seating with cut bougainvilleas on the table cloths and sensational stew/damper and a huge variety of delicious curries. Topped off with a huge variety of mouth-watering deserts. Everyone departed back to Darwin at their own leisurely pace. Rodney Irwin with his son Lee joined me for the weekend, and we had a brief stop off at Pine Creek on the way back. The evening prior Scotty Holden gave me directions to a couple of HG Holden s hidden in the bush. Through a beery haze I amazingly remembered the directions. After a belly full of food it was a chance to chat with friends, new and old and enjoy a few ales without the worry of having to drive home. For me it was perhaps a few too many ales when I finally staggered into my tent wearing every piece of clothing I had brought with me (I left my sleeping bag at home), Katherine can get a little chilly at night let me tell you. Well after spotting a HG Panel Van on the side of the 'old Stuart hwy' we discovered a crushed EH, then low and behold further into the scrub revealed a true "grave yard" of old cars. Someone had bulldozed a huge pile of FC's, FB's EH's HR's and HT's etc. In the pile we spotted the remains of a yellow XW GT as well as an old Customline and XP Falcon. It was amazing to wander around the old wrecks identifying the models. We had lunch at Mayse's at Pine creek before the final leg home. The smells and sounds of bacon and eggs on the BBQ brought everyone out of their slumber on Sunday morning. After a sensational breakfast a posse of Holden's ventured further south to have a gander at Denis Hannah's huge collection of Holden's. Denis's passion and knowledge of Holden's has always held me in fascination, and its not very often us city slickers get to see a rural property of this calibre, with around 100 acres with cattle and a stack of old machinery and knick knacks, its always worth a look. I would like to give sincere thanks to MVEC Katherine for putting on such a sensational weekend. Many Darwin clubs (including us) can learn a lot from them. Cheers Wilko CHCC News September

X-mas breakup & Bowls nite 10 Pin Bowls at Nightcliff followed by a parade through the city ending at Mindil beach. A tour of Denis Hannah s place We need to know numbers so we can book lanes in advance. Pizza s and drinks supplied. Bowling starts at 630pm and costs $19 per person. Spectators are most welcome and this is a fun night not to be missed. Mum and Dad s it is getting to that time of year again and The Club has started discussing the end of year Christmas Party. We would really love to organise Santa to visit this year from the North Pole and maybe hand out early pressies to those children who attend. So Mum and Dad if you would like to contact the club and give us details on how many of your children would attend, boy/girl and ages that would really helpful as we have tried asking Santa and he has not yet finished his list this year.
