I was pretty much a bachelor as Mary- Louise went over to see her folks in Brisbane, my Mum went over to Holland so I had a quiet X-mas with my kids and sister. Being the bachelor did give me a chance to play with my toys in the shed though : ) The official newsletter of the Classic Holden Car Club NT Volume 1/08 clasicholdennt@bigpond.com PO Box Winnellie NT 0821 The committee in conjunction with other clubs is organising a trip down to the Red Centre to partake in the show and do a little sight seeing (pub crawling???) along the way. It is envisioned that we would probably take a few days to get down there picking up Katherine members along the way, arriving Thursday to take part in other motoring activities, have the show on the Sunday and then a couple of days to come home. Tentative dates are in the What s Happening section so come along and blow the cobwebs out of your Classic Holden. I have also changed phone numbers so if you want to give me a buzz try Cheers Wilko So here we are ready for another year ahead, and what a year the club has got planned for you all. The itinerary will basically remain the same with at least one function every month except December. New Members, we would like to welcome Nick Mellios HQ GTS Coupe and Trevor Tschirpig with his ute. Wanted We are after donations from people or businesses for prizes for the Quiz night. If you have something to offer please get in touch with George or a Committee member. There are a lot of events lined up; Quiz Night, Town Run, Shannon s Day, National Motoring Heritage day, Cricket match, Shannons Extravaganza, V8 Supercars, and Flying Fox Festival in Katherine, Rural Rally and Bowls Night. The committee looks forward to a good attendance and participation at these functions from members. We take pride in being part of one of the largest and most active clubs in the Territory, come along, meet some friends and be a part of it all. On that note there is something very special on the horizon, due to the huge success of the Shannons Extravaganza the organisers (John Palamountain) has got together with the car clubs and motor enthusiasts of our Southern Capital and organised a show. This will be the first and largest Car Show of its kind in Alice Springs that should not be missed. CHCC News February

At the last Street Meet of 2007 Chris Parris put his HZ GTS Vicious through its paces at the Hidden Valley drag strip and didn t it pay off.

Refitting the "fats" and fixing some neglected items, mainly the wife, the wipers and brakes. Hear the interior is getting looked at as well. Will we see it at an event soon.

The Contessa Gold hatchback had a T10 gearbox fitted and it seems that it was one of only three built for Harry Firth with that particular driveline combination. Noel, I ll throw in my two bob, I think the car would be priceless and any true blue aussie would give up their right arm and left *** for the chance to own such a beauty. The car took home a trophy of the fastest car on street tyres and it went down the quarter mile at a blistering 12.2 seconds. Rumour has it Dick Dobie is rebuilding his beloved FJ. Prior to Christmas Jeff Prince was goofing around on E- bay with his daughter Elise and they put in a last minute bid on a completely original LJ four door Torana, low and behold the car was theirs. This car has been in one family since new, 80K on the clock, always garaged and comes with all its books. Jeff took a flight down to Sydney to do the deal and also popped into one of the wreckers there and scored a vast array of Torry parts at bargain basement prices. One cannot be envious of Elise being the proud owner of a piece of Australian history. Rob "Possim" Berry thinks he is a bush mechanic (well he does own an EH) or does he always lie on the ground under his ride on lawn mower..or was he just praying to Mecca hoping someone would mow the grass for him...welcome to the rural life mate. The government decide to upgrade my work ute, so out with the old and in with the Qmega VE Commodore ute. The car is that much more advanced than its predecessor. It is a lot quicker of the mark and is a lot more fuel efficient but the best part is the traction control and the sports shift modes. There is a lot more room behind the seats and the seats themselves have a quick release mechanism that gives you instant access to that space. Brenton MacLean has been busy over the Christmas break, he sold his business and flew to Brisbane to buy an early 70 s red Corvette. The car was shipped to Adelaide where he joined with his brothers for the road trip of a life time. A Corvette, Porsche and Jaguar on one of the world s greatest drives, the Great Ocean Road and then on to Sydney. Petrol runs in the veins of the MacLean family. CHCC News February

As with most good things the run has grown over the years and the organisation of the event has grown with it. MVEC members helped out on the day organising the muffler throwing, thong throwing and push a ute competitions. The latter was a delight to watch and at one time some burly blokes went off course to steer the ute straight over the boundary pickets. Glad it wasn t my ute. This year the run was assembled at Hidden Valley in the pit area, once cars were lined up we all set off for a lap of the circuit before the run. It would have to have been the slowest lap of Hidden Valley that I have ever done and it was amazing to see hundreds of cars on the track at the same time. I was accompanied by my sister and mum and we had a ball singing the national anthem and waving flags out the window of the munro to the crowds that lined the streets to watch the procession through the streets of Darwin. Harry Mellios got into the sprit of things and had a go at the thong throwing competition and came out of it quite well with second place and a distance of 34 metres, he was beaten by about 2 metres by a ring in, there were rumours around about a drug test to disqualify him and give the victory to Harry. Gerard Taylor has spent years in restoring his 1950, ute and it made it s debut at the run, this car is immaculate and every credit goes to Gerard, look out for a future Spot light on this car. I was speaking to Trish Creedon on the day and it was confirmed that there were over 495 vehicles lined up at Hidden Valley pits. Although CHCC members dipped out on any trophies this year, the competition was fierce as there were many outstanding utes on display. Many thanks go to the organisers Trish Creedon and John Obolevics as well as Variety and John Palamountain for another fantastic job. The run was bigger than Ben Hur and it takes a lot of organising to get it running smoothly. CHCC News February

I even had a FJ ute fitted with a 9" diff that went to the dump because dad wanted the shed cleaned out. I currently have a 1977 HX One ton ute.

The body is a bit sad at the moment with some small rust spots needed to be removed and it is long overdue for a respray.

5 Classic Holden Car Club Spotlight Owner Mike Brideson Year 1977 Model/Type HX One tone Ute Engine 350 Chev Exhaust Modified 2 1/2 Transmission TH 350 Diff Standard Suspension Standard Brakes Disc front drum rear Paint White Wheels 15 Globes Tyres My Holden experience began in the mid 70s when I did a mechanics apprenticeship at Freeman Motors which was a Holden Dealer in Adelaide at the time. I have fond memories of working on brand new Monaro s and Torana s. My first car was a 48 series Holden which I Purchased for $15.00.This was lowered, had wide wheels and a floor shift. What a machine!!! I then had various models including an EK, EH, 2 x HK Monaro s and a 1966 pillarless Chev Impala. I even had a FJ ute fitted with a 9" diff that went to the dump because dad wanted the shed cleaned out. I currently have a 1977 HX One ton ute. This has a mild 350 engine that runs on straight gas through twin throttle bodies. Gearbox is a Turbo 350 with a B&M shifter going back to a standard diff. Wheels are 15 x 10 and 15 x 8 Globe mags. We have just finished building a new house so hopefully now there is some spare money for the toys as I also have a 5ltr. LX Torana sitting under the carport. Just love the hair Mike, where did it all go : ) I can relate to the photo below, just as so many other members in the club I also had hair down past my shoulders and hooned around in hot cars in the 70 s and 80 s, ah those were the days. Sorry Mike just had to zoom in on this photo. I took the HG Munro out for a spin for the first time in ages and the battery finally gave up the ghost. I popped on down to see Mike who manages Battery Specialists in Vigilant lane Berrimah, got a great deal. I even bought a battery trickler as the car rarely gets used now so I will never have to worry about a flat battery again.
