This Issue Presidents Report 1 Sponsors 2 All The Goss 3 Cricket Match 4 City to Souvlaki 5 Rex Hales Premier 6 Club & Member details 7 Trading Post 8 What s Happening 9 The official newsletter of the Classic Holden Car Club NT Volume 6/11 clasicholdennt@bigpond.com PO Box Winnellie NT 0821 From the Prez Room Well that s another month dusted and we have just had a great couple of functions, we won the Cricket match and retained the Trophy for yet another year and the City to Souvlaki was a huge success, I thank all those who participated and all those who helped out organising it. Once again I d like to encourage you to attend the Katherine Festival. If you re up to a car show and camping trip, this is the weekend for you. Let me know if you want to go. It s good to see a few more members are joining the club s Facebook page. They now get the latest and greatest before the newsletter comes out and have the chance to interact with other members, it s what being a social club is all about. This edition being the last one we will send to everyone who was financial at the end of last year. We start again from next edition.. Club Registration Is your log book up to date?? Remember that after every ten entries you need to have the book signed off by either Rex Hales or an Executive Committee member. Members with Club rego are required to partake in a minimum of three club sanctioned events per year (CHCC constitution) or you will run the risk of not getting your R42 signed off again. This being part of the Govt legislation requiring club rego holders to be a financial and active member of a recognized club whilst they retain club registration. AGM Positions Vacant As the AGM will soon be upon us I would like to advise that all positions on the committee will become vacant. Please consider applying for a position, be it a committee position or even as President!!! It would be great to have some fresh hands on deck and it gives the incumbent position holders a break. I guarantee that you will find it a rewarding experience. Cheers Wilko CHCC News August

All the Goss On the way out to the Batchelor Cricket Match the HG developed a little exhaust leak, by the time I got home the car sounded like a truck, once home I put it on car stands to check the damage, and the rear muffler had totally given up the ghost and split right in half.a visit to Andrew at TPL Exhausts at Coconut Grove had it fixed in no time, at a very reasonable price. According to Ian from Rhino linings, about half of Darwin had been to see the ute at Yarrawonga, I was put onto it by Dave Souter and I just couldn t walk on by. With Monaro bonnet prices sky high on E-bay this car just had to be mine. I picked it up and took it to the Qantas hanger to strip for parts. Touring USA I know it could have been someones project, but it would have been an expensive one, it is full of rust and needed a hell of a lot of work. Having killed so many Holdens in my youth I swore I d never kill another. My only saving grace is that the parts on the car never belonged to it in the first place. Top End Nostalgia s A stack of members decided to join up on the night to watch the action on the Drag Strip and support our competing members. What a sight it was to see Phil Kerr s beautiful Monaro being used as a tow car for Troy David s immaculate FJ ute. This is Darwin s fastest street registered car!!!!! Just driven our RV from Los Angeles, to San Francisco, to Yosemite, thru Death Valley, to Las Vegas, to Hoover Dam, to Grand Canyon, to Alberquerque, to Dallas (New Osterich Leather Cowboy boots), to Houston, to New Orleans, to Miami thru Alligator Alley, to Daytona Beach (Daytona 400 was visited), to Washington DC, to Niagara Falls (Canada & USA) to Hudson, Newburgh (Orange County Choppers) and now at Maple Grove Raceway 2011 Drag Championship (Pennsylvania) and the Super Chevy Show this week end 15th to 17th July. How's that for a holiday? Love the newsletter and made me miss my ute too!! I've attached a couple of photo's; Daytona 400 and what happens when you drive a FORD motor home, photo say's it all. Brent "Boggo" Betts Chris Parris with his beautiful HZ GTS was a consistent runner in the low 11 s but blew out, to knock himself out of the competition, he fronted the Souvlaki run the next day with the gold Torana. Father and Son team Mike Brideson was pulling some decent 14 second times until he too blew out. Son Andrew was having issues with the Torana, with a newly rebuilt 308 that only just got put into the car it had some gremlins. Wife & Mum Cynthia watching proudly on the hill cheering them on. Once again, the HVDRA have put on a great night. Great mates, junk food and great entertainment. See you at the next one CHCC News August

Batchelor Cricket Match It was a beautiful dry season day, just perfect for a cruise to Batchelor to have a game of cricket. Numbers were down on last year but when all things considered that wasn t such a bad thing. I was a little worried as Rex was supposed to drop the some steaks off first thing in the morning but was still a little seedy from the wedding the night before (see page 6), after a couple of phone calls I got the groggy response that Go ahead, I drop them off to Batchelor, so off we went. MVEC did a sensational job of catering to the hungry hordes and I, like a lot of others, went back for seconds. The perpetual trophy has three name tags a piece and this was set out to be a big decider. Well winners are grinners and we got the right to display our name once again. Greg Coates was in charge of the raffle and done great job in presenting the trophy. Once we arrived we set up the game, with only 8 players a side the first innings went very quickly. MVEC won the toss and they elected to field first stopping us with a score of 72 runs. As we were still waiting on the steaks!!!!, it was decided that we would continue the game and it was our turn on the grass to put the brakes on the opposition. And what a sensational job we did, knocking them off with a total of 58 runs. Done and dusted by lunch time but guess what, still no steaks!!!!! It was turning out that it was just gonna be snags and salad, but Rex came along and saved the day just as the hotplate was warming up. Thanks goes to all who made it happen and Shannons Insurance for their sponsorship of the perpetual trophy. CHCC News August

City to Souvlaki The day started off early at the Esplanade and like clock work; a quick run down on the run and cars were sent off with instructions (thanks to Rex and Sue for compiling the questions and judging the answers). The Rally went off without a hitch and we didn t lose anyone. Anyway we got to Harry Mellio s place to find the back yard packed to the rafters with desirable Holden s. The run was a debut for Rex Hales HT Premier fresh form the paint shop and Harry s very own HK 327 GTS Monaro, 11pm nights for the past week saw the car finished for the Rally and it certainly looks a treat. You would certainly be hard pressed to see a better Monaro in Darwin. Once again a sensational lamb feast was put on by John and Kerry Kyriacou with Harry s wife Matoula laying on the traditional salads and sweets. The band was also in flying form, in tune and pumping out a swag of hits that had everyone bopping in their seats. Thanks to sponsors Auto Barn, and Nightcliff builders we had a swag of prizes to hand out and there were many happy smiling faces all round, although too many to mention here, David and Sarah Clark won the quiz with the most points with a total of 35 out of 40. This score was shared with Damon and Karen Wagland but beat them by completing the route 8 minutes faster with the time of 1hr 21m. The Club Treasurer, Ian and Pam Campbell won the trophy for Best Car judged by Matoula, this car is a true credit to its owners. CHCC News August

Rex s Premier I decided to give the Premier a paint job last year, as the paint on it was literally peeling off. Time had finally got the better of the Acrylic Lacquer that was sprayed on in 1983 when I bought the car. A good mate of mine, Neville had recommended a fellow who had sprayed his car 17 years ago. The paint was starting to show some signs of age, but it still showed well, I figured 17 years in the NT weather was as good a test as any. So I was introduced to Les Dixon to see if the Premier was up to his standards for a paint restoration. Les is a spray painter from the old school. We discussed the project over a quantity of beers, and settled on a price with his recommendations for the paint scheme; the original colour Platinum Gold with high sparkle metallic added and a pearl white roof. I was after an original look with some highlights in the paintwork. October 2010 the car was stripped of all trim, chrome and interior before it was handed over to Les. He removed all doors, bonnet and boot lid and stripped the paint work back to bear metal. The front windscreen was to be removed also, as I was aware there had been a problem with rust previously when the windscreen had been replaced and wasn't sure what was hiding under there. The front glass was removed to find the bottom windscreen channel was all but gone, just lots of bog instead! Enter another mate of Neville's- Rob. Rob had already done some smaller repairs on the front guards in the usual places. He has a look at the carnage, then at me and said no f@#$%^& worries mate! 3 days later it was better than new! You could not pick where he had been. A HT GTS bonnet became available, so I took the plunge and had Rob graft in some GTS flutes in the front guards to match the bonnet. Again Rob worked his magic, perfectly positioned and you could not pick the join in bare metal! Les continued preparation of the rest of the car, waiting to pick the ideal weather conditions (low humidity) to lay on the shiny stuff. Meanwhile a friend's daughter contacted me early June to see if the car would be ready to use in her wedding 16 th July, and another car to match would be available. After discussing with Les, the target was set to have the car ready for the wedding. Neville's HG Premier was available, so we were set, just had to get my car finished! On July 15 th, I drove the Prem home, fully completed and ready to roll. We made it to the wedding in fine style. This would not have been possible without the help of some good mates, thanks to Simon Love for the parts and help, Steve for an all out effort with anything that needed to be done to get it there, Les Dixon for your vast experience and dedication and his faithful assistant Laura for all that f*&^%$# polishing (bet your arms nearly fell off). Neville, I still reckon you're in the wrong job after helping sort the door and panel alignment and trim installation. Rob has his own business doing rust repairs and fabrication in Coconut Grove and judging by the work I have seen him do, he has a bright future. Look him up if you need some work done, I highly recommend him. The car has turned out a treat, it was worth the wait and the effort. CHCC News August
