2 Dear Cubmaster, The Pathfinder District is proud to provide our Packs and Cub Scouts the opportunity for fun and excitement with a district wide Pinewood Derby. Enclosed you will find a registration form and the rules for the race and the show competitions. You will need to schedule your pack s preliminary race in advance. Please call Jo Beyes at OR e mail at jmbeyes@yahoo.com to set up your preliminary race night and time. Show cars may be checked in at anytime Thursday or Friday evening. WE WILL NOT CHECK IN ANY CAR BEFORE 6:00pm ON THURSDAY or FRIDAY. A car can only be entered in one category RACE or SHOW. We accept 5 cars for the race division and 4 cars for the show division from each Pack for a total of 9 Cub Scouts participating. If a pack has six (6) boys or less, cars not advancing in the race division during the preliminary races may be entered into the show car competition. This event is very popular with Cub Scouts, and these rules and regulations are enforced to give every Cub Scout an equal opportunity to Do Your Best. To ensure that we can maintain this standard please share this information with all families in your Pack. Although you may have conducted a race within your own pack, past experience has shown the fastest cars may change place when they run on the district s track. The entries from your Pack will race against each other during the Pack s scheduled time. The reason for the preliminary race is to ensure that each pack will be represented in Saturday s semi final races. The two fastest cars will advance to the semi finals on Saturday. THE WINNING CARS MUST BE LEFT WITH THE RACE OFFICIALS UNTIL SATURDAY S RACE. The heats on Saturday are set up so that the two cars from the same pack will not race against each other. They may however race against each other in the finals or if they both go to the championship race. All cars not advancing will receive a certificate and a ribbon. Please remember that all the Pinewood Derby staff are volunteers, and are giving of their own time in order to put on a quality program for your boys. 3 RACE COMPETITION Each pack can enter 5 cars for the race. Preliminary races are on Thursday and Friday. The boys and cars should arrive about 15 minutes prior to the scheduled race time. The car must meet weight requirements, basic dimensions and have legal wheels as described in this manual. The boys in the pack will race among themselves to determine the two fastest cars. The two fastest cars will advance to the semi finals. CARS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RACE IF THEY DO NOT MEET ALL OF THE FOLLOWING RULES: Each Cub Scout must use the current Cub Scout Pinewood Derby kit issued by the pack or purchased from the Scout Shop. Only the wheels, nails and block of wood that are included with the kit are allowed. A NEW car must be made for the current program year. No pre cut kits may be used. No Hobby Shop car kits or wheels may be used. All cars must have at least ¾ inch of material at it s center front to sit on the launching pin. This regulation is for the fair and proper launching of the cars. OFFICIAL BSA WHEELS are to be used. o Only the Official BSA Wheels provided with the kit or purchased separately from the Scout Shop will be allowed. No aftermarket wheels of any kind will be permitted. o Sanding or turning of the running surface of any kind will not be allowed. o The wheel stub surface that makes contact with the car body shall not be rounded over or modified in any way. o The inner surface of the wheel, opposite of running surface, shall not be sanded or lathe turned in any way. o The raised letter on the BSA wheels that read: PINEWOOD DERBY BSA TM, may not be removed from the wheel. Painting of the lettering is acceptable. o Only BSA axle nails, provided with BSA car kit or separately sold BSA wheels are allowed. o Only the manufacturing burrs directly under the nail head at shaft may be removed. No modifications to the nails are acceptable.

4 o If your wheels are found to be illegal by the Race Officials, you will have an opportunity to change the wheels and/or axles; which can be purchased at your expense. The use of wheel bearings, washers, or bushings are not permitted. Adhesive may be used to hold the nail axle in the car body. Axles may be mounted into the car body with the aid of tubing. Wheels must be mounted as intended. Not inside out. No hub caps will be permitted on the wheels. Spokes must be viewable. The overall body width must not exceed 2 3/4 and the length can not exceed 7. No loose material of any kind is permitted on the car. No oil, grease or silicone spray should be used on axles or wheels. ONLY dry lubricants (powdered graphite, teflon, molybdenum, etc.) is permissible and must be applied prior to entering the car through the inspection process. GRAPHITING OF WHEELS IS ONLY PERMISSIBLE IN DESIGNATED AREAS! Graphiting in the building can permanently stain floors and tables. Graphiting in the building could be cause for immediate disqualification. If cars need graphiting prior to the inspection process, it must be done outside of the building or in designated areas only! Cars must not weigh over 5 ounces. If they weigh more than 5 ounces, the parents or adult is responsible for making adjustments. RACE OFFICIALS WILL NOT MAKE THE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE CAR. NO CAR WILL RACE UNLESS IT MEETS ALL WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS. A repair area will be provided for making any alterations to the car. Registered cars will be given a Derby participation number by the registrar at check in, and will then be placed immediately into the pit area. Cars will not be allowed to leave the pit area for adjustments after it has been checked in. Cars will not be touched by anyone other than the race officials until it is time for the boy to race. No work may be done on the cars once they are checked in. Except in an emergency situation such as a wheel falling off during the race. The Cub Scout and one adult will be permitted to try and fix the car in the pit area. THE RULING OF THE JUDGES ARE FINAL. ARGUING WITH ANY RACE OFFICIAL, EITHER BY A CUB SCOUT OR AN ADULT IS GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION OF THE CUB SCOUT S CAR. These rules will be strictly enforced by the Pathfinder District Pinewood Derby Race Officials. Any race car entered for inspection at the Pinewood Derby Check In, not conforming to these rules and regulations will be rejected immediately. The Cub Scout and Parent will be asked to repair any infraction before proceeding through the check in process again. This could include

5 the replacing of the wheels with unmodified official BSA race wheels, or removal of weight.. Refusal to alter car or change wheels upon request will result in immediate rejection of participation in the Pathfinder District level races. Many people use the book Pinewood Derby Speed Secrets by David Meade to modify their wheels and/or cars. It should be noted that in the book, on Page 4 titled A Scout Is Trustworthy, the last line of the second paragraph clearly states, Ask your local race committee for a copy of your rules and then abide by them. This statement pertains to not only the wheels, but the race car itself. Please be a Trustworthy scout and follow all Pathfinder District Pinewood Derby rules and regulations. If in doubt, it probably isn t acceptable. SHOW COMPETITION In addition to the race, there will also be a show car competition in which each pack can enter 4 cars that are not racing. All show cars must be checked in on either Thursday or Friday during the races. No show car will be allowed to check in on Saturday. You do not have to determine the category of the car. The judges determine the best category for each entry. It is essential on Saturday that someone from the pack picks up the show car entries after the award presentation. It will be up to the Cubmaster or the parent to make arrangements to have the car picked up. The ticket given to the Cub Scout when the car is registered must be returned to pick the car up. Show car awards will be presented immediately following the championship races at aproximatly 1:00pm. Each car will receive a certificate and a ribbon. SHOW CAR CATEGORIES MOST REALISTIC The car represents the balance, shape, proportion and finish of an actual car. NOVEL DESIGN JUDGE S SPECIAL The car reflects a novel approach to shape, motif and design that departs from the expected car. The car in the view of the judges deserves recognition but the car does not fit into a specific category. PATRIOTIC SPIRIT The car reflects the best use of Red, White and Blue colors and/or Patriotic symbols and/or has a military theme. KID DID The car in the view of the judges deserves special recognition for its demonstration of a Cub Scout skill level CUB SCOUT SPIRIT The car best reflects the use of a Cub Scout theme from any or all ranks.
