1 TOMATO VARIETY TRIALS 1973 Smithfield Experimental Farm Research Branch, Canada Agriculture Box 340, Trenton, Ontario J. G. Metcalf and H. H. Brown
2 - 2 - Tomato Variety Trials During the summer of 1973 tomato varieties were grown as follows: Greenhouse seeding Pricking off Field set - April April 24 - May 1 - May Irrigation was applied as required during the season. Weed control was Trif1uralin (pre-plant) and Diphenamid (post-plant). This gave excellent weed control. Days to 1st. Ripe Fruit Symbols and Numerical Ratings This is the number of days from field transplanting to the time when 50% or more of the plants in the plot carry two or more ripe fruit. Yields Yields reported are expressed as tons per acre. These are the average of 4 replications. Color determinations were made on the hunter color and difference meter and converted to a 1-5 rating. color Numerical Ratings The quantitative assessment of the expression of a character using a 1-5 rating was scored so that in all cases 5 represents the most desirable type, e.g., a 5 rating for smoothness denotes a very smooth fruit while a 1 indicates a very rough fruit. The tomato variety trials at the Smithfield Experimental Farm as reported in the summary are as follows: Advanced Yield Trial (Page 5) - Varieties and lines which are standards in the area, lines from our breeding program which show promise, lines received from elsewhere showing promise. Most of the lines tested in this trial have shown merit in one of the other trials in previous years. Observation Trial - Smithfield (Pages varieties are reported as grown in an observation trial at Smithfield. Hand Picked Advanced Coordinated Trial - Smithfield (Page 8) - Ten varieties were grown in this trial as part of a province wide coordinated trial. These figures are the Smithfield averages. Hand Picked Observation Coordinated Trial - Smithfield (Page 9) Fifteen varieties were grown as part of a province wide coordinated trial. These figures are the Smithfield averages. Machine Harvest Advanced Coordinated Trial - Smithfield (Page 10) - Ten varieties were grown in this trial and harvested once with per cent marketable noted. Machine Harvest Observation Coordinated Trial - Smithfield (Page 11) - Fifteen varieties were grown and rated as to suitability for once over machine harvest.
