2 IR-4 Ornamental Horticulture Program Research Report Form Instructions: 1) Please submit your IR-4 Ornamental Horticulture Program research report(s) on this form. Write the title of your project and the IR-4 Protocol Number on the first page. Include a summary paragraph about the results and any changes from the protocol on the first page and a summary table with statistics on the second page. Follow the guidelines in the remaining sections; some request filling them out or attaching a separate electronic file. 2) You may use this form for a single PRNumber or multiple PRNumbers. For example, group into a single report all the plant species tested for crop safety with one herbicide or group all the products tested against a target pest or disease into one research report form. 3) Open the footer to enter your name(s) and the PRNumber(s) covered by the research report. 4) the completed form to your Regional Field Coordinator. You may be asked by your Regional Field Coordinator (RFC) to attach the related Research Report Cover Sheet which includes your full name, address, and PRNumbers for your project. 5) any separate files (such as pictures of phytotoxicity, raw data files, environmental conditions files) to your RFC at the same time. 6) If this will be quite large with attached pictures and additional files, please burn two cds and send them to your RFC instead of the . 8/18/06 clp

3 IR-4 Ornamental Horticulture Program Research Report Form Project Title: Tolerance of field-grown conifers to over-the-top applications of Mesotrione 4SC. Protocol #: Narrative Summary (Results/Discussion) Please keep text to one page if possible. Include summary of trial results and a brief discussion. Results for multiple PRnumbers can be summarized together, but please list all PRNumbers in the footer and in the summary data table. Sprays of Tenacity 4SC (mesotrione) at 0.188, 0.25 or lb ai/a were applied on May 27 and again on July 7, 2010 over the top of ten actively growing conifer species that had been planted in a sandy loam soil in Little to no injury was observed on these conifers during the 2010 growing season. The highest injury rating (1.75 on a 0 to 10 scale) occurred on Douglas-fir 2 weeks after the second application of Tenacity 4SC at the highest dose. Injury was in the form of whitened growth on new needles. The whitening effect dissipated over time. Mesotrione appears to have good potential as a postemergence herbicide for conifers grown in nursery fields or Christmas tree plantations. Researcher(s): J. F. Ahrens and T. L.
