4 PROTOOL TITLE: Herbicide safety and Yellow Nutsedge ontrol in ontainerized Ornamentals with and and BAS 659H. PROTOOL #: INTRODUTION: Safety of sulfentrazone,, and halosulfuron on select containerized ornamentals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On July 6, 2007, study was initiated. 48 one gallon pots of each of the following species was assembled: hrysanthemum x Sheffield Pink (Hardy Mum Sheffield Pink ), Lantana New Gold (Lantana New Gold ), Ilex x onaf (Oak Leaf Red Holly ), Loropetalum chinense rubrum (hinese Loropetalum), Rosa Nearly Wild ( Nearly Wild Floribunda Rose), Hydrangea macophylla Nikko Blue (Nikko Blue Bigleaf Hydrangea). All plants were sized up from liners in May of Liners were sized using Fafard 52 mix (one of several industry standards). Farfard 52 has a bulk density of 17 to 20 pounds per cubic feet, and a ph range is 5.5 to 6.5. The mix contains processed pine bark, peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite. All plants also received a slow release fertilizer application (~1 Tablespoon of a Osmocote or Polyon). Before herbicide applications were applied, 4 plants of each species were assembled in a 6 x 6 area. Also included in the 6 x 6 area was four one gallon pot containing five tubers of Yellow Nutsedge (yperus esculentus). Herbicide applications were made to 28 pots in the 6' x 6' area. Granular herbicides were preweighed (to cover 36 ft 2 ), and uniformly applied with a cheese shaker jar. Sprays were applied with a O 2 backpack sprayer calibrated to deliver 20 gallons per acre (GPA). After herbicide treatments were applied, pots were moved to assigned test area where they were arranged in a randomized complete block (RB) design of 4 replications. Treatments were repeated on August 6, 2007.Watering occurred at least one time daily, but was varied occurring to weather. Each water event provided approximately one half inch of water. The treatment list was as follows: Treatment Number Treatment Name Formulation Application Rate / Acre GR 125 lbs pr/a GR 250 lbs pr/a GR 500 lbs pr/a 4 6 E 21 oz pr/a 5 6 E 42 oz pr/a 6 6 E 84 oz pr/a 7 BAS 659H 1.75 GR 150 lbs pr/a BAS 659H 1.75 GR 300 lbs pr/a 1
5 8 9 BAS 659H 1.75 GR 600 lbs pr/a 10 Showcase 2.5 GR 100 lbs pr/a 11 Broadstar 0.25 GR 100 lbs pr/a 12 UT Ratings for plant damage and yellow nutsedge control were taken at 1, 2, 4, 6, and 10 weeks after first treatment (WAT). Plant injury was taken on a (0100 scale) and numbers represented the following: Value Plant Symptoms 0 No visual injury present 1030 Minimal injury to desirable plant. Less than 10% of the plant leaf service area showing chlorosis and necrosis More noticeable plant injury or stunting. Greater than 50% of the leaf area showing symptoms of chlorosis and/or necrosis Plants severally injured. Most of the leaves and leaf surface showing signs of chlorosis and necrosis. 100 Plant appears dead. No signs of regrowth. Yellow nutsedge control ratings were on a 0 to 100 scale, and numerical values represented the following: Value ontrol 0 No control as compared to the check 10 to 30 Very poor weed control as compared to the check. Only a 10 to 30 % weed biomass reduction. Some chlorosis and necrosis evident in emerged weeds. 40 to 60 Poor weed control as compared to the check. 40 to 60 % weed biomass reduction. More 2
6 noticeable injury or stunting to emerged weeds. More pronounced chlorosis and/or necrosis to the leaf area of emerged weeds. 70 to 90 Fair to good weed control. 70 to 90 % weed biomass reduction. Emerged weeds severally injured or dead. Greater than 50% of leaf surface showing signs of chlorosis and necrosis. 90 to 99 Excellent weed control. Greater than 90% weed biomass reduction. Emerged weeds mostly dead and/or severally injured (chlorotic and/or necrotic). 100 Emerged weeds dead, and no evidence of weed regrowth. Data was analyzed using analysis of variance and means were exposed to Fisher=s least significant difference (LSD) test with a significance level of α=0.05. RESULTS: Significant damage occurred with several of the herbicide on Hardy Mum Sheffield Pink, Lantana New Gold, Oak Leaf Red Holly, hinese Loropetalum, and Nearly Wild Floribunda Rose, but damage did not exceed 25% (see attached tables). Although significant damage to Nikko Blue Bigleaf Hydrangea was noted at all rating periods, damage never exceed 50% and generally affected robustness of the plant (see attached tables). ontrol yellow nutsedge was variable and not reliable because of poor tuber germination. ONLUSIONS: It appears that and and BAS 659H could be utilized as herbicides to select containerized ornamentals. All herbicides were applied overthetop and minimal significant injury was seen on select ornamentals (major on bigleaf hydrangea). Injury would probably be acceptable to most growers on most ornamentals. Yellow nutsedge tuber germination was poor and statements on control by these herbicides cannot be made from this experiment. 3
