Islands and coastal areas outside the last contour shall use the last wind speed contour of the coastal area. 4. Mountainous terrain, gorges, ocean promontories, and special wind regions shall be examined for unusual wind conditions. For each standard there is listed a maximum effective projected area (E.P.A.) and a typical weight each standard has been calculated to support. The loading capabilities of each pole are indicated for the five wind levels recognized by AASHTO, The map above shows the maximum steady wind expected within a 50 year period of recurrence at an elevation of 30 feet above ground. If standards are to be mounted above grade, call for assistance to select the correct standard. The isotach map indicates maximum steady winds. Since winds are rarely steady and usually involve gusts, E.P.A. calculations allow for a 1.3 gust factor. Locations lying between isotach lines should be rated at the higher of the two wind speeds. PEMCO provides the information on each of the following Isotach Chart pages as a guide only and assumes no liability for its use. Allowable pole EPA for jobsite wind conditions must be equal to or greater than fixture mount EPA. Responsibility lies with the specifier for the correct pole selection based on A.N.S.I. wind map and job location. Caution must be exercised in determining wind velocities in special wind areas such as: Mountainous Regions Areas surrounding the Great Lakes or other large bodies of water or open land. Areas subject to extreme wind conditions, such as hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, and tornadoes. Areas adjacent to airports. Any specific area with a known or suspected abnormally high intermittent wind condition caused by geography, adjacent structures, or other specific local conditions that may not be recorded in National Weather Service records. Responsibility lies with the specifier for correct pole selection based on AASHTO wind map and job location. " The Wind Map is intended only as a general guide. Always consult local authorities to determine maximum wind velocities, gusting and unique wind conditions for each specific application. CAUTION: Wind speeds and listed EPAs are for ground mounted installations. Poles mounted on structures (such as bridges and buildings) must consider vibration and coefficient of height factors beyond this general guide. Consult AASHTO standards. Extreme Wind Events: Hurricanes, Typhoons, Cyclones, or Tornadoes expose poles to flying debris, wind shear, and other unpredictable aerodynamic forces not indicated by the wind velocity ratings. Pole Strength Limited Warranty: Standard, unmodified Pemco Lighting Products, Inc. poles installed as recommended, undamaged by corrosion, or lack of maintenance, shall withstand steady wind conditions as provided (Allowable Pole EPA). Installation of poles without luminaires, or attachment of any unauthorized accessories to poles shall void this warranty.
