Top View Grass blocks are constructed so that earth is placed between concrete squares in the block these squares are then planted with grass.

Grass blocks are used on drive ways and large public areas where an ugly expanse of tarmac or cement is not wanted. Top View Grass blocks are constructed so that earth is placed between concrete squares in the block these squares are then planted with grass. When the grass has grown it can be mowed like ordinary garden lawn (and actually resembles an ordinary lawn) thus giving the driveway or parking lot a natural appearance. However the robust construction of the Grass Block ensures that vehicles including heavy trucks can safely use the space provided. Perspective View GR101 GR X 500 mm sq. X 115 GR X 500 mm sq. X 115 Details for laying Side View The sub-base must be excavated to approx. 120mm below final level, and finished off to approx. 10 mm tolerance. Compact the area by means of hand roller or rammer to a uniform density at a workable moisture content. Spread coarse sand to depth of approx. 20 mm by means of screed on this area. The blocks are firmly bedded in this sand to the level required. No jointing material required. The surface must conform to a tolerance of 15mm maximum on a 3 meter straight edge. The voids in the blocks are then to be filled with a good quality top soil as growth is of utmost importance. A light fertiliser dressing is essential. Grass can be sown or planted. Care must be taken to ensure that the final level of the soil is 20 mm below surface of block. Sub-base preparation using stabilising agents such a cement or lime is less desirable than natural gravels or soils of suitable quality. Soil required to fill is m3 per sq. meter. 15 SEPTIC TANK SYSTEMS SEPTIC TANK SYSTEMS Based on a research report of the National Institute for Water Research of the CSIR* A septic tank system usually comprises two major components (a) The septic tank. (b) The final disposal system, which is usually a subsoil percolation system. Each of these components has a specific function and should be designed accordingly. Septic Tank The function of the components of the system The function of the septic tank is to condition raw sewage, which has a clogging effect on the soil, thereby reducing the effective absorbency capacity of the subsoil. When the raw sewage enters the tank some of the suspended solids settle to the bottom of the tank and some collect at the surface, with the result that three distinctive layers are formed in the tank a layer of sludge at the bottom, a floating layer of scum on top and a relative clear liquid layer in between. The organic solids and dissolved material in the sewage are attacked by bacteria so that the volume the scum and sludge is reduced by liquefaction and gasification. Final disposal The only function of the final disposal system is to get rid of the effluent from the septic tank in a safe and in offensive way. Design requirements Septic tank (a) The tank must function as both a sedimentation tank and a digester. (b) The capacity must allow for ample retention time for incoming sewage. (c) Blockages must be minimised at inlet and outlet. (d) Provision must be made for ventilation to allow escape of gases. (e) The escape of scum and sludge to the soil percolation system must be minimised. Final disposal system (a) The nature of the soil must be determined as it has an influence on the shape and size of the system. (b) The system must not create a danger to public health. (c) Clogging effect of absorptive soil surfaces must be minimised. (d) Full use must be made of available infiltration areas. * Malan W M a guide to the use of septic tank systems in South Africa.
