2 PAGE 2 CENTRAL FLORIDA WINGS Chapter Director: March is here, and things really start to stir for spring. Bike Week and our annual Wing Gathering top the list. The motorcycle world comes to life and the rumble of Harleys and hum of GoldWings are in the air. Hopefully the weather will turn out to be at least as nice as what we ve had in mid-february. I have been contacted by a new rider interested in joining us. Please welcome him warmly and make sure he gets oriented to GWRRA chapter life. After all we are here in the FUNshine state having FUN, FUN, FUN. Speaking of Wing Gathering, remember we have agreed to help with registration at the rally on Thursday from 2 to 5 PM and Friday from 2 to 5 PM. We ll need to have 2 members there during those times. Don t forget to make sure you get your ticket for prize drawings for the workers at the end of the rally. We still have lots of tickets available for that beautiful new 2018 GoldWing to be given away at closing ceremonies Saturday evening. The more I read about the new Wing, the more I wish I could buy some tickets, too. That s all I have for now. Ride safely and be aware of all of those hazards around us on the road. See ya at an event soon. Ride safe. Ride aware. Arrive alive. Cliff Hotchkiss Fill-In CD ADD FL1-G, FL1-H2 Waiting to go into Norwood's for lunch
3 ORLANDO, FL. PAGE 3 Should I Allow My Teenager to Get a Motorcycle As teenagers get older, the prospect of soon being able to drive on their own is very exciting for them. However, it can be a complete nightmare for a parent. Many teenagers start asking for a motorcycle rather than a passenger vehicle as this type approaches. Should you allow your teenager to get a motorcycle? This can be a hard decision to make and one that shouldn t be make quickly. There are a few advantages to allowing your teenager to have a motorcycle. For one, they will only be able to have one other passenger with them. That is if you allow it. Some parents make the rule of no passengers for the first year. That is a personal decision. Many passenger vehicle accidents occur because of the car being full of kids and that is a major distraction. They also wont be able to hide any alcohol on a motorcycle as they can with a passenger vehicle. Having been a teenager once ourselves we know this is a likely scenario in a car. For the most part, purchasing a used motorcycle for your teenager will be less expensive than purchasing a used car for them. The insurance can also be cheaper too in many cases. The cost of gas that they will be burning up is also going to be significantly less than will a car. You are going to have to take an honest look at how responsible your teenager is. For those who have allowed their teenager to ride on and operate off road motorcycles for years, then the issue wont be as large. This is because you know they are capable of handling the equipment and know how to properly operate it. If your teenager has a need for speed or is a risk taker you will need to be more cautious with this decision. You will also have the issue of how your teenager is going to get around when the weather is cold or too bad to operate a motorcycle in. For the most part, if you agree to allow your teenager to get a motorcycle, you should be able to come to agreement on the terms and conditions of this taking place. Start with safety requirements. Is your teenager willing to wear a motorcycle helmet without fail all the time when operating the bike? Some teenagers are too concerned with their hair or looking like a dork in front of their peers to agree to this. If they wont then the motorcycle definitely should not be considered. Is your teenager willing to take a motorcycle safety course? If they aren t willing to give up one weekend to be involved in such an activity, do you really want to turn them loose with such a machine? Regardless of the power behind a particular model of motorcycle, it is still a bike they will be riding with other cars on the road. Once you have discussed the guidelines and terms of your allowing your teenager to get a motorcycle, you will have a clearer picture of what your teenager is willing to do for it. If they are willing to abide by your rules, then you should trust them to make the right decisions. It is a good idea to put the agreed terms in writing as well as the consequences for breaking them. This way everyone is clear on what is expected from them regarding this decision. It can be difficult allowing our children to grow up. The rite of passage that comes with obtaining a driver permit isn t easy for most parents. Allowing them to be on their own and operate a motorcycle is a tough decision and one parents have to make all the time. As a parent, it is your responsibility to do what is in the best interest of your teenager even if they don t agree with the decision.

Nov 4-10 GWRRA FL District Wingers-n-Waves Fort Lauderdale FL FLORIDA WINTER RIDING With the wonderful opportunity we have to ride our two, three and four wheel bikes here in Florida 365 days a year we still must plan for the unknown. Unknowns such as cold weather, (yes, I said cold) and rain to name a couple. As this is the time of the year for that colder weather let s talk about our rides in that. Do you prepare for your ride like you need to? Layers is the answer, (if you don t use the electric option). Layer your clothing for warmth. When you start out in the morning you know it s going to be much cooler and you ll need the most warmth. As the day and ride goes on it will warm up. If you have layered your clothing you can shed a piece each time you stop for better comfort. When evening comes around and the sun sets it gets cooler you can put your layers back on for warmth. Even though you are riding in cooler/cold weather always remember to hydrate. Staying hydrated helps reduce cramping and Powerade is a great drink to help with that and replace electrolytes. There are so many things and places to see in our great state, don t let a little chilly weather keep you at home and off your motorcycle. So lets get out there and have FUN and remember to Ride Safe, Ride Aware, Rick & Pam Northrop Sr, District Ride Educators NEWSLETTER AD PRICES 12mo 11mo 10mo 9mo 8mo 7mo 6mo 5mo 4mo 3mo 2mo 1mo Business Card Size $75.00 $66.75 $65.50 $56.25 $50.00 $43.75 $37.50 $31.25 $25.00 $18.75 $12.50 $6.25 Half Page Ad $ $ $ $ $ $87.50 $75.00 $62.50 $50.00 $37.50 $25.00 $12.50 Full Page Ad $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $83.33 $66.67 $50.00 $33.33 $16.67

Another month has gone by getting ready for YOUR 39th Annual Gathering of the Wings! If you haven t done so already, get those Pre-Registrations sent into Geno Jette right away! Pre-Registration ends March 1st and the price goes up! All the information to register and what will be happening at the Rally can be found on the District Website at FL2-G had a good turnout for their rally and the new venue, Haus of Trikes, was very good. The chili was also very good and congratulations to Chapter FL1-A. Their member s chili entry won 1 st place twice! Once for People s Choice and the other for Judges Choice! We were able to give the new Chapter Directors of FL2-E Miami, Arnoldo and Gloria Noa, their Certificate of Appointment from the GWRRA home office. FL2 -G s Chapter Director, Harry Jordon, appointed Nikki Blaha as his 2nd Assistant Chapter Director. Congratulations Nikki! Chapter FL2-A, the First Chapter Chartered by GWRRA in Florida, had their 40th Anniversary Party. It was held on Saturday February 24th at St Mark s Parish Hall, 730 NE 6 Ave Boynton Beach from 11:00am 3:00pm. Since Cheryl and I are active members of FL2-A (Cheryl is the Senior CD) we can tell you it was a real FUN Party! It was a Spaghetti Luncheon, there were 7 Baskets to Win, a Silent Auction with everything from battery chargers to mounted fish, Grand Prizes donated by Broward Motorsports of West Palm Beach and Cycle Gear of West Palm Beach and Olive Garden and Bill and Cheryl Smith and Joanne Deutsch of The Engraver, a 50/25/25 and a headliner show by Scott Ringersen, The Elvis Experience! All for only $5.00 per person! They had 175 in attendance and 16 Chapters represented! Thank you so much for the support. That s what GWRRA is all about! PAGE 7 Chapter FL1-H, Daytona, has changed the date of their Biker Breakfast to March 10th being held at the same location, Ormond Beach Elks Lodge, 285 Wilmette Ave., Ormond Beach. It is AUCE (all you can eat) from 9:00am 11:00am. I try to go every year and it is always good food! Last time, I won one of the 50/25/25 drawings! Hope to see you there! We continue to update, and we think improve, the District Website. Scotty Kelly has done a great job keeping up with all the requests made to him. We will continue to update the website, but what we would ask of all of you who are on Facebook please Like, Friend and Follow the Florida District Facebook Page! It is on the Home Page of the District Website under Social Media. We hope everyone has a Happy St. Patrick s Day! We have FUN in the FUNshine State! 8 PAGE 8 District Educators: Ah February, the month for love. Or so it says on the calendar. Or was that Lincoln s birthday or Washington s birthday or maybe Presidents Day? No, I think it was Valentine s day. Yes, that was it! Well, this year I remembered and did it up right for my sweetie! Got her a baker s dozen roses (12 red, 1 yellow) and made her a dolphin fruit platter. I m such a romantic... OK, enough of the hearts and flowers from this ole pirate... Just sayin... arrrrg... And now it s March and really looking forward to the bestest and greatest District Rally of all time. (I know, you re wondering where this guy went to school). Well, I gotta admit, I am totally biased and completely prejudiced. The Florida District 39th Annual Gathering of the Wings QUACKER DYNASTY Rally is the BESTEST and greatest and most FUNNEST in the nation! And if you miss attending it on March 22 nd - 24 th your gonna miss a great event. You don t wanna do that! So, be there or Quack, Quack. Not only is March hosting the FUN Rally, but I encourage you to keep an eye on the District website for other training events taking place throughout the state at different chapters and locations. Especially check out the Rider Ed page link at: rider-ed.html and check where Rider Ed Seminars and ERC/TRC/MFA classes may be taking place that you could possibly attend. ERC=Experienced Rider Course, [2 wheels]/trc=trike Rider Course,[3 wheels]/ MFA=Medic First Aid) Classes are added to this schedule on an as needed basis, due to the extreme fluctuating membership of our chapters and the availability of the ranges. On that same page are the numerous Level forms necessary for your use in the Levels Program that you can download, complete and back to me. Also, there is much information pertaining to the Rider Education Program for you. We have a few short few weeks before it will be time to see who will be $10,000 richer or the owner of a new Gold Wing, and that is due to the diligence of our dedicated members in selling these tickets. Without you this program would not be CENTRAL FLORIDA WINGS possible. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Your support of this program is what makes the Florida Rider Education Program what it is. From the proceeds of this raffle, our Florida Chapter Members are able to receive their riding and CPR/FA training at no cost. Even our chapters benefit from the sales, so it is a win-win all the way around. Yes, I do have a few left here in my office if your chapter needs a few more. Just drop me an or give me a call and I ll get them to you. Rick and Pam Northrop Senior District Rider Educators Ride Safe, Ride Aware!
