2 Chapter T s Director s Corner All motorists are reminded to safely "share-the-road" with motorcycles and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe. Motorcyclists are reminded to make themselves visible to all other motorists. Motorcycles are vehicles with the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle on the road. Riders and motorists are urged to give each other the mutual respect they deserve. It is the responsibility of both riders and motorists alike to obey all traffic laws and safety rules. Drivers of cars and trucks are frequently asked to remember that operators of smaller motorized vehicles, motorcycles in particular, also have their right to the road. Motorcycles have their headlights on during the day to increase their visibility on the roads and highways. Additionally, more motorcyclists are wearing 'high-viz' colored clothes/jackets and adding more LED driving lights to enhance being seen by others. There are more motorcycles on our roads now that the weather is better and we've already had motorcycle accidents and deaths in our area. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; everyday in this country three motorcyclists are killed at intersections. Therefore, we need to raise awareness and encourage people to stop and look twice at intersections. "Look Twice - Save a Life." We're just trying to get everyone to look a couple more times before making a turn or pulling out into an intersection. It doesn't take but a second to do that and it might just save a life. As you drive/ride around, look for the large "Watch for Motorcycles" signs throughout the area and our 'lawn signs' to get this safety message out. There were 33 members and guests at our last gathering now that members with health and/or family issues are back, as well as those returning from Florida. All were reminded that in addition to checking over our motorcycles, we should ensure the 'just-in-case' cards we carry contain upto-date contact information; especially for those who ride alone on occasion. Also, don't forget to check those First Aid Kits before you might need to use them. Jumping on the bandwagon, as other Chapters have done, to increase the fun during our monthly gatherings, Chapter 'T' will have a member tell a joke to lift our spirits and tighten up our stomachs. Some parameters need to be established as we sometimes have kids (future members) in attendance nor do we want to gross anyone out. Lets keep our jokes in good taste, hopefully geared toward motorcycles and funny. At our last gathering our director gave examples of a couple one liners and a short tale related to motorcycles So check your files, test your memory and come prepared with one to tell. There s a lot of clever people in Chapter T. Sponsors: Let's welcome a new sponsor - Sherry Z's Diner, 569 State Rte 13, Williamstown, NY. If you're out riding that way, stop in for home made specials and deserts. Tell your friends, fellow riders, etc. about Sherry Z's and all our fine sponsors noted throughout this newsletter. 3 NY T Rider Education Page: Unconscious Incompetence Unfortunately, it's not easy to know what we don't know. As a result, nearly all riders have some weaknesses that they don't recognize. Some have many. And, like the fourth comedian and the gazelle, the first time they come to know they are beyond their skill level is when it's too late to recover. For instance, most riders believe they are better at braking than they are. But they quickly learn otherwise the moment a car pulls across their path of travel and the essential skills required to perform a safe, rapid stop from speed fail to materialize. (Rely on ABS? On dry pavement, current ABS systems require a longer stopping distance than a skilled rider performing threshold braking often the difference between striking a vehicle and stopping short of impact.) What skills do you lack that you may not realize? Will unawareness and false confidence bite you when you least expect it? Ask fellow riders to observe your riding. Read books about riding technique to raise your awareness of your own skills. Be honest with yourself. Then sign up for a training course that lets professional riding coaches observe your techniques and help you identify any potential problem areas. Do all you can to move away from the dangers of unconscious incompetence. As the MSF says, "The more you know, the better it gets." Conscious Incompetence At this level, riders know that they have specific shortcomings. And, while they may lack confidence in those areas, they at leastrecognize where the problemslieand either do their best to avoid situations that call on those skills or decide to work on improving them. For instance, many riders admit they are uncomfortable riding U-turns and other low-speed maneuvers, so they avoid them at all costs. Or they cautiouslypaddle walk their bikes around parking lots to avoid a spill. The best solution? Seek help. Study the techniques and begin to work on those skills that can build confidence and convert your limitations into competencies. Before long, you'll make it to the next stage of rider competence. Conscious Competence Through increased awareness and dedicated efforts to overcome weaknesses, virtually all riders can reach a high level of proficiency. Here, riders routinely apply the techniques and strategies they've learned and consistently demonstrate skilled and safe riding. They are consciously engaged in all aspects of their riding and continually apply knowledge they've gained through studying and training programs. They are safer, more aware and more skilled. And they enjoy riding more than they ever thought possible. Be warned; at this stage you will likely become hooked on continual training and learning. But that's also what can take you to the pinnacle of riding competency! Unconscious Competence Ah, motorcycling nirvana. At this stage, the rider applies exemplary technique and consistently demonstrates proficiency without deliberate conscious effort. Excellence is now instinct. Because skills, techniques and strategies are so well rooted, the rider is able to quickly gather information, process it and respond without having to methodically think things through. Every experienced rider has some level of unconscious competence you no longer have to think about how to shift a motorcycle, right? You just do it. Interestingly, the rider who has achieved a level of unconscious competence although he is among the best riders in the world consistently asks himself what weaknesses still remain unidentified. Understanding these four levels of competence and recognizing where your own skills lie can do much to vastly improve your riding skill, safety and enjoyment. 3 Jim Thayer NY Chapter T Educator This is a part of an article from Rider Riding Well By Eric Trow Remember May is Motorcycle Awareness Month To Kick it off I invite you to join Chapter D & T at the T-CLOC/PLP at Green Lakes State Park at 9:00am on May 11th.
