. to our Chapter Director... Shorter Days and Cooler Nights I m sure all of you have noticed the sunlight in the afternoon is fading earlier and earlier! A sure sign that summer is over and our chances to get in a ride here in Upstate New York will soon fade away. September ushered in Autumn and October brings with it Apple picking, Fall harvest festivals, and, the changing of the leaves. Soon we will change our clocks to Fall Back and lose even more afternoon sunlight as darkness falls as early as 6pm. We must raise our level of awareness with the falling leaves, early darkness, and, the running of the deer! At the September gathering we announced the date of our Holiday party. On December 3 rd at 5PM (save the date), Chapter D will celebrate another year of Friends, Fun, Safety, and, Knowledge. This year s party will be at the RFH Hide Away Motel and Restaurant, Co.Rt. 57 Phoenix, NY. Tickets can be purchased for $15.00/person at our Chapter gathering, other events, or, contact Pam Pearson who will be coordinating the event. Our September calendar was again filled with some great activities. I want to especially thank Deb and Dave Hartley for hosting our Chapter BBQ and Bon Fire. We had a great showing from both Chapter D and Chapter T, with over 40 in attendance. The weather also held out long enough for us to actually get a nice fire going, have s mores, and, share some great conversation before the rain moved in! Bill and Julie Spencer lead our annual Grape Fest Ride to Naples. It was a great turnout! Sixteen bikes to Naples - 3 Gold Wings, 1 Valkyrie and 12 Harleys, plus 1 car! A very interesting selection of two wheels. I understand it was a great day and a great ride! September s monthly dinner ride was at RFH Hide Away. For all of you who were able to attend our Gathering on the 14 th we again had a very good turn out and great conversation. October looks to be equally filled with great rides and events. On October 1 st, Davis Gibbs will lead a Fall Picnic Ride to Speculator NY. We will be having a picnic lunch at the Speculator Pavilion at the east end of the lake before returning home. October 8 th, Rick Reardon will again lead a Salmon River Ride with lunch at the Tail Water Lodge, Altmar. October 12 th will be our monthly gathering at the Euclid Hotel & Restaurant. Dinner is at 6:00pm (optional) and our gathering will begin at 7pm. At this month s gathering, we will welcome a special guest speaker. We will welcome Amber Wilsie (Dave Jones step-daughter). Amber is a representative with State Farm at the Andrew Cambria Agency in Cicero. She is licensed for both personal and commercial lines, as well as, life, accident and health insurance. Prior to selling insurance Amber has worked in the motorcycle industry for over ten years at Iron Block Harley-Davidson and Caskinette s Throttle Shop in service, sales and retail. I want to welcome her to our gathering and thank her for sharing her knowledge.
On October 14 th, John Van Deusen will be leading a lunch ride to the Blue Canoe Grill, North Lake Road, Erieville, NY. Anyone interested should meet at the Chittenango Fire Station parking lot at 11:00AM. There will be a short ride then lunch. Lisa and I will be sending out s to get a head count following the October gathering. October 22 nd will be our annual Covered Dish dinner event hosted by Laurie and Brian O Brien. This is always a Chapter D favorite so mark your calendar for October 22 nd at 4:30PM. Please bring a dish to pass. Lisa and I will be sending out s for a head count and will announce it at the monthly gathering. October s monthly dinner ride will be on October 26 th at Tabatha s Family Tree Restaurant, Cold Springs Road, Baldwinsville at 6:30PM. This event is just a couple of days before Halloween so feel free to wear your costume. There will be judging on site. During the month of October, we will continue our conversation regarding the future of Chapter D in I am still searching for someone to fill the role of MEC with Trish s announcement she will step down as of January 1 st. I am still in need of an Assistant Chapter Director to step up when I am unable to be at the Gathering. Please consider helping wherever you can. Finally, a reminder that our holiday party is fast approaching on December 3rd! Remember to see Pam Pearson for tickets. It is critical to get an accurate count as we meet with RFH staff and plan the holiday event. Stay Safe, Ride Safe Bill and Lisa Nickal Chapter Director NY D
. to our Chapter Educator. Fall Riding - again!! Well I don't want to say this but Summer riding is behind us and Fall riding is here. So we need to transition from Summer to Fall riding strategies. To start with, the sun is going down earlier and comes up later, temps go down as does the sun, so we need to be prepared for the temp change with an extra layer of clothing for you and your co-rider. Not having that extra layer of clothing could cause you to become hypothermic and could affect your riding abilities. Signs of hypothermia could include - shivering, impaired judgment, rapid heart rate, and cold-to-the-touch skin. We need to recognize these signs and take action before you get into trouble. There is still some great riding around as the leaves change colors. We want to do some fall rides to see these changing colors. That leads to the leaves starting to fall, and, that leads to riding hazards. These leaves can create slip hazards when putting your foot down to stop, and, traction problems when stopping or starting. If the road is wet, the hazard is even greater. We need to stay alert for these changing conditions. That means we need to scan ahead of us and expect the unexpected, which could include animals that move around more in the fall, like deer. With school back in session, kids are also a hazard when they get off the school bus. Often they are talking or texting on their phones and not paying attention to traffic when crossing the road. Also, kids may be playing next to the road, and shortly, in piles of leaves that have been raked on the side of the road. So - what did we learn from this: be prepared for changing conditions (take extra clothing), SAA ( Scan, Anticipate, Act ), use caution when riding thru or stopping on leaves either dry or wet, and use caution around school busses and the discharge of kids. We need to be alert. You could also play the "What If" game while motoring down the road. What if something ran out in front of you or what if your bike had a tire issue - what would you do? This game would prepare you to take action instead of thinking what you need to do when confronted with that situation. Riding a motorcycle comes with a certain amount of risk. Those risks can be reduced by taking a rider training course and learning proper riding techniques. I'm Just Sayin.RIDE SMART! Ride Safe, Ride Smart. Rick & Pam Chapter Educators, NY-D
. to our Chapter MEC... Do you know where to call should you need to make changes about your phone number, snail mail address or your address? Because of the "privacy policy", I cannot make any of these changes to GWRRA National. Only YOU can call National and let them know what changes need to be made. The number for them is: Recently, while calling a few members whose membership dues were up for renewal, one of our members commented that he had not heard from National. (Usually the members hear from National a couple of weeks before I call). Then he remembered that he had to have his changed due to someone hacking into his system. He had not realized that HE needed to call National with his new address. That got me to thinking that maybe some of the rest of you may not know the number to call. I have mentioned it in the past, but, that was no doubt several years ago. I would suggest you put this phone number in your cell phones so you'll be able to access it quickly should you need to make any changes in your personal information and then you can call National so they can update your record. In September, Jim & I along with Bill & Lisa Nickal, Bill & Julie Spencer & Davis Gibbs headed down to Binghamton to visit with Chapter Y. Assistant District Director, Shawn Hayes, was planning on traveling down there also, so he met up with us in Tully and joined us on our ride down. It was a nice ride and as always, it's nice to get together with other Chapters and meet some new folks. This past weekend Jim & I traveled to Lake George to attend the District Ride Out. While we did encounter some rain on Friday afternoon, Saturday & Sunday proved to be a couple of gorgeous days. We enjoyed a great ride on Saturday. The temps were a little on the cool side, but, I was wearing a heated jacket, so I was a HAPPY BIKER!!! Here's hoping you are enjoying the Autumn season and are getting those last few rides in while we still have some decent riding weather. I'm looking forward to getting some leaf peeking in over the next couple of weeks! Some Pondering Thoughts Why does the sun lighten our hair but darken our skin? Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery? Old people shouldn't eat health foods. They need all the preservatives they can get. I've learned that one good turn gets most of the blankets. Finally, I've learned that I don't suffer from insanity - I enjoy it!!! Trish Thayer Chapter D / Membership Enhancement Coordinator

. to Tech Contribution... Deciphering Motorcycle Tire Sidewalls Everything you need to know about your motorcycle tires is imprinted on their sidewalls. All you need to know is how to decipher it. Most important is the big number describing the tire s size and general characteristics, for example: 130/70R17 MC 62 H. The first number is the tire s width in millimeters; the second represents the tire s aspect ratio, which describes the tire s sidewall height as a percentage of its width. In this case we have a tire that s 130mm wide and 70mm high. R means this tire is radial, and 17 tells us it fits a 17 inch rim. MC means its a motorcycle tire, while 62 is the load rating index, or the maximum amount of weight the tire can carry at maximum inflation. This may be expressed elsewhere on the sidewall as a letter or spelled out along with the maximum tire pressure. The maximum is the pressure the tire can safely hold, not the pressure you should be riding with under everyday circumstances. H is the tire s speed rating, an H-rated tire being safe at a sustained 130 mph. You ll also find Tube-Type or Tubeless stamped somewhere to let you know if you need a tube. Most tires have a directional arrow molded in the sidewall. When the tire is correctly mounted the arrow will face forward when its at the top of the tire. You ll also find a balance mark indicating the tire s lightest spot. This mark should be aligned with the valve stem whenever a new tire is mounted. Other sidewall information includes the number of plies, the type of material used to build the tire and the tire s build date, which is usually found following the DOT tire ID number. Tires built after 2000 have a four-digit code. The first two numbers are the week the tire was built, and the last two are the year. (The above reprinted from the September 2016 Cruiser magazine article by Mark Zimmerman). I will add a few clarifications for the above article: (Bill Spencer) 1. The load rating index of 62 actually means the tire is rated to support a load of 584 pounds. Tables are available on the internet to show the various load and speed ratings. 2. Consult your motorcycle owners manual for the correct operating tire pressure for your particular motorcycle. 3. Its always a good idea to check the manufacturing date of new tires to be installed on your bike. If you purchase tires via the internet, check this date as soon as they are delivered. If you purchase tires from a dealer, it will save all involved if you ask to see the specific tires to be installed before they are mounted. Ask the dealer to show and explain the date code. There are anecdotal reports of people having tires mounted that had been on the dealers shelf way beyond a reasonable length of time. What is reasonable depends on whether the tire was stored in a cool, dry, sunlight free location, or, on a rack outside in the hot sun day after day. Also, it depends on how long you take to wear the tires out. A reasonable shelf life might be up to 3 years for a tire that will be worn out in 3 years for a total life of 6 years.
SPECIAL COMMENT The membership of GWRRA NY Chapter D would like to thank Tabatha Babbitt for her support of our Chapter over the past number of years. We were disappointed to learn that her second restaurant location in Auburn, NY, that previously advertised in this space is no longer open. The original Tabatha s Family Tree Restaurant location on Route 370 in Baldwinsville remains open and we encourage you to enjoy the great food and hospitality this fine restaurant has to offer.
