2 S PRING IS HERE!!! So they say. We had 21 members at our gathering and I thanked everyone for their continued support. Chapter T s Director s Corner We were proud to introduce our NEW banner that we can now proudly Fly high. Next, We introduced our new two-sided bike flag. Many of the members purchased them to put on their bikes to fly proudly as members of NY Chapter T known as the Tornados. We recently chose and honored our 2015 Chapter Couple of the year and to further reflect on that, we presented Jim and Trish Thayer with the COY plaque. Congratulations again!! We have had many illnesses, surgeries, mishaps within our chapter during the last couple of months. MaryAnn Bennett, our Sunshine Coordinator, gave us an update of all the members on how they are doing. We wish everyone well at this time. At our last meeting Dan and Chris said that they would organize the Ice cream rides-and we thanked them for stepping up. It was also suggested that we have a dinner ride 2 weeks after our monthly chapter meeting. Jack again reminded us that as we move forward that we will need sponsors. As our rides start to occur, please note who our sponsors are and more importantly support them. In your travels throughout the area, seek out the business owners and let them know who you are or leave your Chapter 'T' card to show your/our appreciation for their support. We will be getting more cards to pass along on to the members so that they may have them when they are making these sponsor rides. A quick note on upcoming events, the April 4 th Western NY training Day in Batavia has been cancelled due to a lack of members signing up for this event. Also, reminder the NY District Ride-In, hosted by Chapter U on May 15 th and 16 th. There will be a meet and 2

The raffle ticket is only for matching the evening drawing and no special or bonus drawings. Once April starts you can go to the web site to see what numbers were picked for the evening Pick 3. The web address is: I received an from GWRRA District Treasurer, Eileen Guile, regarding the 2015 NY/NJ BI-State Convention/Rally. 4 J NY Ch im Thayer apter T Educat or NY T Rider Education Page: LANE POSSITION How many lanes are there on a two-lane road? Trick question? Not really... Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructors describe a motorcyclist's "lane" as being broken into left. middle and right, but that's just the beginning. It would be more accurate to say a singletrack vehicle can occupy an infinite number of segments in a given space. Practically speaking. the number of locations a bike can occupy in one 12-foot-wide lane is huge. Experienced riders have a variety of lane-position rules and superstitions. Depending on the situation, you can be in one place or another, from the edge of the shoulder to the middle of the road. For instance, at dusk and dawn you want to be on the lookout for deer and other critters, which means avoiding the right side of the lane. Of course, that theory assumes the roadway is more alien to animals than the roadside. Being closer to the middle of the road gives oncoming vehicles a better chance of seeing you. When you're following a semi, SUV or some other oversized fuel-drain, riding near the centerline can prevent an oncoming vehicle from attempting an ill-timed pass. Practice the outside-inside-outside "racing line" in corners, entering as far to the outside as possible so you have the space and time to make corrections. Delayed apexes are great, too, particularly in blind corners. The later you define a curve's apex, the sooner you can see the exit and get back on the gas. Managing lane position is a two-dimensional tactic. Extra distance is your friend in traffic because it gives you extra time to figure out your next move and make it. The MSF recommends allowing 2-4 seconds between the car ahead and you. At 70 mph you're covering approximately 100 feet per second, which is a convenient mental tool for calculating following distance. Counting "one potato, two potato..." while approaching a stationary reference point helps calibrate your brain, too. Since one of the least endearing qualities of modern drivers is their irrational love of tailgating, a well-calibrated brain goes a long way toward keeping you out of trouble. The average driver's poor mathematical understanding makes it tough. Running up against the next car's bumper in traffic decreases his average speed and that of all the vehicles behind him. He'd be better off going slow and keeping his distance than constantly stopping and starting. Tell that to distracted commuters: If they aren't darting from lane to lane, they're out of gas by the side of the road or waiting in the middle for the cops to show up after rearending some poor soul. If an offending motorist is following too closely, try varying your speed. Slow down until the driver passes, or build some distance between the one ahead and you, then gradually speed up. When the offensive one catches back up, slow down again to rebuild your safety margin. Bozo will soon take his clown act somewhere else. If that doesn't work, pull off the road and wait for the joker to pass. Here's one more for the road: Assume most drivers are malevolent idiots until proven otherwise. Underestimating the skills, intent and prevailing attention level of your fellow motorists makes you appreciate competent, decent drivers all the more. Choosing the best lane position is a moment-by-moment decision, so stay tuned-in to your riding environment. Hope for the best but plan for the worst, even if it happens right in front of you. 5 How to free stuck pushbutton switches Postby WingAdmin» Thu Dec 01, 2011 T TECH CORNER his is a fairly simple one, but a problem I have seen many people mention experiencing. Even if you haven't experienced this problem yet - it's only a matter of time. Performing this procedure as preventative maintenance is a good idea! On the GL1500 (the GL1800 also suffers from this problem) there are push-on/push-off buttons on the handlebars that control things like cruise control, hazard lights, and the audio mute. The shaft connecting the buttons to the actual switches are lubricated inside with a grease-like lubricant. This grease picks up dust and dirt over time until it is not lubricating anymore, and acts more as an adhesive than anything else. It doesn't prevent you from pressing the button to turn it on. Where the problem arises is when you try to push the button again to turn it off - the tiny spring inside the switch is not powerful enough to push the button back out against the stiction of the dirty lubricant, and the button stays pushed in. As a result, you have Goldwing owners riding around with cruise control on, hazard lights flashing, and no music. The solution is quick and simple. You will require some electrical contact cleaner. You want a quick-drying contact cleaner that does not leave residue behind: I had originally found that WD-40 works quite well: its carrier flushes away the dirt on our switch mechanisms, and when it evaporates it leaves behind an oily film that lubricates it and keeps it working. However, I later found that the oily film attracts dust and dirt, meaning that the switches will begin sticking again a few months later - particularly in cold weather. I since switched to simple contact cleaner with great success. 1.The first switch is the easiest to do: The audio mute switch. The reason this one is easy is because no disassembly is required! Insert the cleaner straw into the right side of the tuning switch as shown, push it in until you feel the resistance of the mute switch mechanism, and spray. Give it a 1-2 second burst. If the switch is already stuck, start working it in and out until it pops free. Once it is free, give it another half-second spray, then work the switch in and out times until it moves freely. 2. The hazard light switch requires that the left grip switch module be taken apart. There are two screws on the bottom that must be removed, as shown: with Lester Bennett & Dave Secor 3. Once the screws are removed, the top half can be separated from the bottom half. You do not have to separate them completely - you just need access to the underside of the top half: 4. Insert the straw as shown, up and toward the mechanism of the hazard light switch. Lubricate it the same way as described for the Mute switch. Once it's working well, snap the halves back together and re-tighten the screws. 5. The cruise control switch on the right handgrip also has two screws on the bottom that must first be removed: 6. The cruise control switch mechanism is much more exposed and can be easily accessed and lubricated. Snap the halves back together and replace the screws. It might not be a bad idea to put this item on your annual winter maintenance list. It only takes a few minutes to perform, and will prevent frustration down the road - literally - usually when you're miles from home! Read more: t=9296#ixzz3vrles4ph 5
