All drivers bring their own problems and skill levels to your shared driving world. Physical Skills: Using your eyes, listening, knowing how to control the car c. Between 15 ½ and 16 : can only drive with parents/ legal guardian or driving instructor Between 16 and 18: Can drive with a licensed driver 21 or over c. 18 or older: Can have as many people in the car as there are seatbelts d. Between 16 and 18: Can only have one non-family member in the car with you. Family members include: Parent, step-parent, grandparents, step grandparents, brother, sister, step brother, step sister, half brother, and half sister. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE COUSINS!!! e. Between 16 and 18: Cannot drive between Midnight and 6 am, if you drive between work and school during those hours you must have a note from your supervisor or principal. f. Between 17 and 18: Cannot drive between 1am and 5am, if you drive between work and school during those hours you must have a note from your supervisor or principal. g. If you get one moving violation under 18: you will only be allowed to drive with your parents for 6 months. h. If you get two moving violations under 18: suspended license for 90 days, 6 hours of remedial class, high risk insurance for 3 years and retake driving and written test again. i. If you get a third violation under 18: suspended license for 1 year, 6 hours of remedial class, high risk insurance for 3 years and retake driving and written test again SIGNS 27. What does a stop sign mean? REGULATORY SIGNS
4 Student LESSON 1 Page 4 A stop sign is used on a road that crosses a main highway or a through road. The stop sign is a red octagon with white letters and a white boarder. 31. What should you do at a stop sign? Always come to a full stop. You must yield the right of way to pedestrians or other vehicles in or approaching the intersection. i. To Yield means to allow others to use the intersection before you do ii. Right of way mean you accept the privilege of immediate use of the roadway 32. Where do I stop at a stop sign? Stop sign only: Stop before entering the intersection where you can see approaching traffic but before you reach the crosswalk. White Thick Bar: Stop at white bar not stop sign c. Blocked View: If your view is blocked move ahead slowly and prepare to stop again until your view is clear. However do not block oncoming traffic. 33. What do yield signs mean? You must yield right of way to other road users. Slowing enough ahead of time can often permit you to proceed without stopping. However, always be prepared to stop. c. Proceed only when you can you can safely do so without affecting the flow of traffic in the lane you are entering. 34. Who determines the speed limits? The State of Ohio- The General Assembly votes on the guidelines in the digest. The Local Government posts the speed limit signs and enforces them. The state has to approve any changes of the road markings or speed limits. 35. What are some of the factors that determine what the speed limit should be? Zoning Number of lanes c. How do you handle a traffic light when there is a power failure? ROAD MARKINGS 54. What is the difference between a solid yellow line and a broken yellow line? A solid yellow line on the driver s side of the road means no passing. A broken yellow line means vehicles can pass only when other vehicles are not approaching. IF there are two double yellow lines, it means that no one shall pass over them 55. What is the purpose of the dashed white line?

A broken white lines means that you can change lanes but a solid white lines means that you should maintain the lane you already occupy. GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAR 57. Where do you find the following on your car? Turn signals- left side of steering column Horn- Center of steering wheel or buttons on the spoke of steering wheel c. Steering wheel adjustment- Left side of steering column d. Gearshift lever- right side of steering column or on console e. Wiper switch- on turn signal or dashboard f. Head light switch- On the turn signal g. High beam light switch- On the turn signal h. Cruise control- On the turn signal or steering wheel Before the car can be started you must apply the brake, the key will not turn and the car cannot be put into gear. This was added to most cars so that the car could not be bumped into gear. So before starting the car they turn the key to the ON position and check the gauges and warning lights. You can tell if you have anti-lock braking system if the ABS light is displayed on the instrument panel. 58. What are following gauges? Do all cars have instrumentations? How so you adjust the dash/console lights? c. What is the purpose of the tachometer? d. What is the odometer? 1. Where is it? 2. How many are there? e. Draw a pointer on the temperature gauge that indicates overheating? If your car is overheating and the hot light comes on or the gauge is in the hot area pull the car off the road and sit for 1 to 1 1/2 hour for water in the radiator to cool down. You can start the car and turn the heater on high and push the gas pedal down ¼ of an inch and hold there for a couple of minutes. If the temperature gauges come back to the center you can continue to drive. But keep the heater on high. The heat works off the hot water in the engine and will take some of the heat out of the water. Never add water to the hot radiator never try to remove the radiator cap. This could blow hot water all over you.
