1 Chapter 1474 Newsletter Volume XV Issue 6 June 2015 Editor: Alan Fry Presidents Column: John Backes Meeting Schedule All future meetings (except for the Christmas Dinner) in 2014 will be held at the Williamsburg Christian Church on the second Thursday of the month, starting at 7 PM. The next meetings will be June 11 and July 9. Directions to Williamsburg Christian Church The building is at 200 John Tyler Lane. At the intersection of Route 199 and Route 5, turn the OPPOSITE direction that you would turn to go to the field. Go 50 yards and turn right (left is Strawberry Plains Rd.). You can t miss the Church; it is on the right just past the Professional Park that can be seen from Route 199. Everyone needs to be warned that there is an additional fine of $200 for going over 25 MPH and the cops are there a lot. Night Fly CVA will be holding a Night Fly on Friday, June 12. With the new technology it is easy to affordably fly at night. Light strips with LEDs every inch or so are readily available and can be powered off the flight battery in electric planes. Glow/gas planes will need an extra battery to power the lights. Start preparing now. We will have hot dogs and drinks. Cooking will be approximately 6:30 PM. There will be open flying throughout the event but if anyone is uncomfortable flying while others are flying, we will arrange for an individual flying time. It is highly advisable to test you plane by flying before full darkness in case your plane is not as visible as you planned. Float Flys Float Flying is another area to explore. The first event, hosted by HRRC, will be June 20 at a freshwater gravel pit in Smithfield. About 10 CVA members attended the event last year with 5 flying airplanes. I think that everyone was impressed at how well things went. We will discuss this at the meeting. The first FARM club event at Lake Richie near Bealton is scheduled for June 27. I would like to get a big group of CVA members to attend these events. Please plan to come along, even if you do not have a plane to fly. But --- you do have time to get a plane ready. There are many inexpensive electric planes that fly well off water. I would recommend that you first plane be one that is also capable of flying off grass so that you can do practice flights at the field. Search the internet for RC seaplane and you will find many to choose from. One that is particularly popular is the Polaris. There will be three more water flying opportunities this year so get started now.

2 Hobby Shopping Sometimes you can save some money by going to sales outlets other than the traditional RC retailers. I go into Google and enter the item description. I often try it several different ways Futaba S3003, S3003 servo, etc. The usual hits are Amazon and Ebay. I believe that using Amazon is risk free. I am more careful on EBay. I usually only deal with sellers that have at least a 99% Positive Feedback rating. If it is less than 99.5%, I will read some of the reviews. For the example of the S3003 servo, Tower sells for $10.99 and there are EBay sellers that have four for $10 plus $5 shipping (less than $4 each). Another item that I have bought on EBay are Hitec Optima 6 receivers. Most RC places want $53 to $65 for this receiver. I have bought three for $103. This method does not always work. The Tactic 624 receivers are the same prices as the traditional RC stores. Show and Tell We are going to have a short show and tell at the end of each meeting. This only works if people take the time to prepare and bring something to the meeting. The President announced the minutes from the April meeting. A motion was made to accept the minutes as published. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously. Treasurer s Report The treasurer reported on the current operating & mower fund balances that included expenditures for toilet facilities, mower insurance, and recent site improvements. Site Improvements Tom advised that at the culmination of three recent work days, several members had constructed and relocated 10 new assembly tables, installed new bleacher seats, treated bleachers with Wood Life, repaired a broken starting stand, replaced the first aid support post, straightened the iron fence and repainted the mural on the North side of the shelter. Most areas were mowed on Tuesday but the entire site will need to be re-mowed on Friday in preparation for WOW X, and volunteers will be needed to perform preliminary set up of tents & tables. Activities Joe announced the following events: CVA s WOW X will be on 5/16/15 with a pilots meeting scheduled for 9:30am. Tom confirmed he had volunteers for all listed positions and that all flights required a spotter. The next CVA Night Fly is scheduled for 6/12/15. The HRRC Float Fly has been scheduled for 6/20/15. The FARM Float Fly has been scheduled for 6/27/15. Safety An effort to educate everyone on the importance of proper and timely re-binding of aircraft receivers to their respective transmitters continued with a brief discussion by John Backes relating to an issue at Boo Williams where accidentally leaving one aircraft armed while attempting to fly a second using the same transmitter

3 created a situation that fortunately was only destructive to the first aircraft and involved no other pilots or observers. Tom spoke about the recent hospital visit for new member Ryan Lacourse after he reinstalled a propeller onto a new aircraft that had not been re-bound to the transmitter after making several programming changes. Those 15 stitches across the back of his hand will serve as a constant reminder for him. Tom also spoke about what he thought was some minor chattering of control surfaces on his Ultimate, but in fact should not have been ignored as the aircraft was destroyed in an unexplained crash shortly after takeoff. Training Tom advised Alan of new club member Ken Herman that he was beginning to train. Ken was part of the recent W.A.L.T. class hosted by CVA. Club Promotion It was unanimously agreed that the recent W.A.L.T. class on beginning model aviation that was held in conjunction with the CVA picnic was well presented and was enjoyed by all those that attended. Alan began a discussion related to purchasing two club related NMAD banners from the AMA. The ensuing motion carried and the purchase will take place. Old Business The discussion of installing a permanent club sign on Rt.5 continued with Winston indicating he been unsuccessful so far in making contact with John Hoffmeyer. A motion for CVA to purchase a flying lawnmower for Steve Kolet to assemble & fly at Something Different/NMAD was approved. New Business Nothing to report. Show & Tell During this month s Show & Tell, Gary talked about and passed around his Magnum Reloaded foam aircraft purchased from West Michigan Park Flyers. This aircraft is proving to be just as enjoyable to fly in calm conditions indoors as it is in the wind outdoors. Dustin Perry completed assembly of and displayed his new foam EDF version of a DeHaviland Vampire he purchased from Hobby King. Dustin plans to make shake down flights on Saturday at WOW X. Steve Kolet displayed his slightly smaller, balsa, pusher version of a DeHaviland Vampire. There being no further club business the meeting was adjourned at 8:09pm. Activities: Joe Musika May was a good club month! We held our annual Electric Fly. About 13 or 14 pilots were flying, and all our visitors were enjoying it to the fullest! There were lots of visitors at the Fly, having a good time!!! Next came Warbirds over Williamsburg. This event too, was a success. Many flyers and planes, 32 fliers to be exact!! All morning planes filled the air. This went on until almost 3pm. If you missed this show, you missed an exceptional one. Also there was work done on our field by our members. Ed Zwerski repainted the shed wall that faces the road, and it looks GREAT! Also the restraining fence was straightened by Gary! Benches now look like brand new, with boards replaced and re-weathered, plus the all tables replaced, plus 4 new ones added. Now there is plenty of room to work on our models! Come out to see all the hard work, be astounded, and say thanks to the crew!

4 June 12th there will be an impromptu NIGHT FLY. Be sure to come out, as they are fun to watch, or fly in. There will be two Float Flys. June 20th, Suffolk has one, and June27, between Fredericksburg and Warrenton. There will be signs on the roads. To reach the Suffolk fly, take James River Bridge, follow signs to Benns Church and turn right, continue until you see shopping center, turn left at Taco Bell. Flying will be in rear of shopping center. This is a big event! Lots of planes!!!! More next month. Training raining: : Alan Fry Website of the Month This month s website of the month is a company called Corrosion Technologies Corporation. This company makes CorrosionX, which is popular with many CVA club members. CorrosionX is advertised as a corrosion prevention compound, lubricant, and a penetrant. It can also be used to waterproof electronics. My address: AlanWF -CVA@yahoo.com Electric Motor Designations The folks down at Heads Up RC put together a great article explaining the conventions used in classifying electric motors. Below is a reprint of the Heads Up RC article: We stock over one hundred different motors in our store and we are often asked what the numeric designations of these motors mean. There are generally four different motor naming systems that we use: Eflite Naming System A: This system uses the terminology for old DC brushed motors. For example, the Eflite Park 400 or our Power Up 400 Sport; both of these motors are replacements for 400-class DC brushed motors, which were heavier but less powerful. The origin of the numeric designation of "400" for the brushed motor was loosely based on the length of the motor (e.g., a 400-size brushed motor was 38mm long). The numeric designation on a 400-size brushless motor has little to do with the dimensions of the motor (although most 400-size brushless motors do tend to be similar in size), but rather the type of aircraft that would ideally be powered by such a motor. For example, a plane that had a 400-size brushed motor may use a 400-size brushless motor as a replacement.

5 Eflite Naming System B: This system uses nitro engine equivalents for the designation of motors. The dimensions and/or weight of the brushless motor may differ from those of its nitro engine equivalent, but the power produced by the brushless motor is comparable to that produced by the nitro engine; the brushless motor may be a suitable substitute in a plane that calls for a certain size of nitro engine. For example, the Power Up 15 Sport motor is roughly equivalent in power to a.15 size nitro engine. Airplanes that are classified by motor size can use brushless motors with similar numeric designations (e.g., a 25-class plane may use a Power Up 25 Sport in place of a.25 size nitro engine). Rotor Can Dimensions + KV: For example: = Rotor Diameter of 42mm, Rotor Length of 50mm, KV Rating of 600. We used to use this designation for our Firepower brand of motors before we redesignated them using the Eflite naming systems (see above); we still include these designations in each of the motor detail listings.

6 Stator Dimensions + Windings: This designation is common to our Emax brand of motors. For example, the Emax GT2820/06 has a 28mm stator diameter, 20mm stator length, and 6 windings*. *"Windings" (also called "turns") is is the number of times that the motor wiring is wound on the stator, and in turn the number of winds determines the kv of the motor. For the purpose of reference, the lower the number of winds the higher the kv, and the higher the number of winds the lower the kv. The aforementioned Emax GT2820/06 is rated at 985kv; by comparison, its cousins, the GT2820/04, GT2820/05 and GT2820/07 are rated at 1460kv, 1180kv and 850kv, respectively See you at the field.
