Chapter 1474 Volume XV Issue 12 December 2015 Newsletter Editor: Alan Fry Presidents Column: John Backes Meeting Schedule December 10 Christmas Dinner at Peking Mongolian, Williamsburg January 14 Williamsburg Christian Church Christmas Dinner The Christmas Dinner will be held Dec. 10 at the Peking Mongolian & Japanese Restaurant in Williamsburg. NOTE Change from last year. The website is The cost will be adults - $1700; children under 9 years old $7.00; children 3-4 $5.00. The address is 120 Waller Mill Road, Williamsburg. Directions From Newport News take I64 west exit at 238 (Camp Perry), make left onto VA-143E, turn right onto VA-132 (second light), turn right onto US60/Bypass Road. Stay on Bypass Road, turn right at second light onto Waller Mill Road. Peking is in far corner of the Big Kmart Shopping Center. This year we will be collecting for the dinner in advance. Make your checks payable to CVA and mail to Jon Persons, 6339 Centerville Road, Williamsburg, Va by December 4. Write the number people and the category in the memo line. If you pay your money and are not able to attend, we will make a refund. At the November meeting, it was decided that we support FISH for our charitable cause. Donations of food or money should be brought to the dinner but keep it in your car until after the dinner and we will collect them in the parking lot. Communication is the answer That is true for many things but I am specifically talking about having someone to fly with. I frequently hear people complain I came to the field and nobody was here. Later I will talk to someone else that says the same thing and find out that they missed each other by just a few minutes. The easy answer is to coordinate your schedules. This could be done with a phone call, or a message on the guest book. Ideally, it would involve more than one method of communication. Call up one or two that you usually fly with, send an to a larger group and then post a note in the guestbook for someone that might not be normally available at that time. Historically there has been a Wednesday afternoon flying sessions for the retired members. This has not happened for the last few years. Maybe it is time to re-establish that group! FPV Flying This is a reminder to those flying FPV at the CVA field that the policy is to fly in accordance with AMA guidance and use a spotter who maintains Line of Sight Vision of the aircraft and can notify the pilot of any potential hazards that he cannot see through the FPV goggles, especially full scale aircraft.
Membership Renewal CVA membership for 2015 is good until the first meeting of You should not fly after that until you have renewed your CVA membership for For current members the annual dues is $85 whether you renew now or wait until later in the year. The CVA membership application is available on the CVA website under Join Our Club. Remember AMA membership expires at the end of the year and you cannot fly in 2016 unless you have a valid AMA membership. Take care of this now so that you can join us for the CVA New Year s Day Fly-In. Comfort Zones (recycled) I wanted to talk about Comfort Zones for this month. Wikipedia says The comfort zone is a behavioral state within which a person operates in an anxiety-neutral condition, using a limited set of behaviors to deliver a steady level of performance, usually without a sense of risk. I suggest that you analyze what your comfort zones are. Can you comfortably take off, fly and then land comfortably? What about on a windy day? Are you comfortable doing aerobatics? Once you have identified your existing comfort zones then it is time to develop new comfort zones. That takes stepping outside your comfort zone and working on developing new skills which eventually results in new comfort zones. It is important to have the right conditions when you decide to go this. Wait for a day that things are feeling right. If you are not comfortable landing, then bring out an easy to fly airplane and when the field is not busy, make repeated landings during one flight. If you are not comfortable flying in the wind, then gradually start flying in increasingly windy conditions. Start on days when the wind is nearly down the runway. If you are not comfortable doing aerobatics, then gradually work up to more complicated aerobatics. Start with simple maneuvers like loops, rolls and inverted flight and work your way up to more difficult things. Do not limit yourself to flying areas. Evaluate your comfort zones in building. If you have only built an ARF then try building from a kit. Work up from doing minor repairs and then on to major repairs. Eventually you will have a much bigger skill set in many areas and a wide variety of comfort zones and probably much more enjoyment from the hobby. Show and Tell We will not do Show and Tell this month. Contact Me Phone: jb753@cox.net Address: 8630 Diascund Road, Lanexa, Va Secretary s etary s Report: Gary Clifford CVA Meeting Minutes: 11/12/15 Editor s note: Tex Harrison filled in for Gary at the November 12, 2015 meeting. The November 12, 2015 meeting was called to order by the Vice President at 7pm with 15 members present. The Vice President asked if there were any changes or additions to the minutes of the October meeting that were published in the newsletter. Bob Felberg made a motion that the minutes of the October meeting as published in the newsletter be accepted. The motion was seconded, a vote taken and approved unanimously.
Treasurer s Report The treasurer reported on the club s finances. Site Improvements Tom Treese reported that the field was in good shape and that it may not require any more mowing until spring. He plans on rolling the runway when the ground gets a little softer. The gas in the mowers and cans has been treated for the winter. Tom thanked all the members who had helped maintain the field this summer. Activities Joe Musika reported that we had our last event of the year, the Giant Scale Fly-in and it turned out very good. There were 14 pilots, lots of flying and a good turnout of spectators. The raffle went well and the club made $ Joe said that we will need people to run next year s events so please volunteer so he can start planning. This year s Christmas Dinner will be on December 10 th at the Peking Restaurant located at 120 Waller Mill Road in Williamsburg. Price for the dinner-$ Safety Tom Treese passed around a propeller that had broken in flight just after takeoff. The prop had broken at the hub and the pieces had damaged his airplane. He said that we were lucky it broke in flight. If it had come apart when he was starting and running up the engine in the pit, someone could have been seriously injured. He cautioned members not to stand in the prop arc when engines are being started in the pit area. Tom also showed a prop that had several very fine cracks and suggested that all props should be inspected carefully and regularly. Training Nothing to report. Club Promotion Nothing to report Old Business Winston Shepherd reported that he had not been able to talk to John Hofmeyer about placing the new CVA sign on route 5, but he had discussed it with John s son, John Everett. John Everett stated that he had plans to clear the roadside between the entrance to Branscome s plant and the entrance to his boat yard. He agreed that it would be a good place to put the sign. When coming from Williamsburg, this would place the sign on the left side of route 5. Placing of the sign was discussed and it was agreed that this area would be acceptable. New Business The Vice President asked if the club Christmas Charity wanted to support FISH again this year with donations of food items and/or money. The agreement to support FISH was unanimous. The Vice President asked for a volunteer to collect and deliver the items to FISH. Ed Zwerski stepped forward. All donations will be collected at the Christmas Dinner. Winston suggested that since there had not been a spectacular crash this year, the Broken Prop Award not be awarded. Bob Felberg pointed out that a spectacular crash was not the only reason to make the award. It had been given out for funniest, most unusual or to the person with the most crashes. It was decided that the tradition would be continued. Jon Persons reported that he had looked into getting a handicapped port-a-potty and found it would double the cost of the one used now. The pros and cons of getting a handicapped port-a-potty were discussed. The subject was tabled until the person requiring the facility was contacted for his opinion. Mark Motter announced that 2016 CVA membership cards would be the same as last year with the exception of the date change.
Show & Tell Winston Shepherd reported on the Drone Club meeting he had attended in Williamsburg. There being no further club business the meeting was adjourned at 7:55pm. Activities: Joe Musika This year's flying events are over. All in all it was a pretty good year. At times, Mother Nature let us down weather-wise. But, we improvised and everything seemed to work out. Our last event of the year is our Christmas Dinner. It will be at the oriental restaurant, in the Kmart shopping center, off of By-Pass Rd. The price is $17 per head. It will be on Thursday, Dec. 10th, at 7pm. Our Christmas project this year is raising money and food for FISH. FISH is a charity with no paid employees. It is a non-denominational charity that our group has supported for years! They do wonderful work helping the needy. And these days there are quite a few families in need. This year Ed Zwerski will collect the money or food donations at our dinner/ meeting. Also this is a good time to mention if anybody has any ideas for new events, or will volunteer to run an event? If interested see Joe Musika or anyone on the board. We do need some New Blood!!!!! Training raining: : Alan Fry This month s website of the month is called Know Before You Fly. Know Before You Fly is an education campaign founded by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to educate prospective users about the safe and responsible operation of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The website has a lot of good safety information and several nice videos. Here is the link: Do you have a favorite website? If so, let me know and I will put it in the newsletter. Favorite online store, how to build, how to fly, etc- send me the link! My address: AlanWF -CVA@yahoo.com How to Replace Electric Motor Shafts Heads Up RC website has an excellent article on replacing motor shafts in electric motors. Here is a reprint of the Heads Up RC article: The following instructions apply to most of the brushless outrunner motors that we sell.*
1. Remove the C-clip at the rear of the motor that retains the shaft. Also remove the washer under the C-clip. Removing this little washer can be the most difficult part of disassembly, as it tends to get hung up in the C-clip groove. 2. Loosen the set-screw(s) at the front of the motor. On some motors, these set screws are inside the ventilation holes of the motor. You have to look closely to find them, but they are easily accessible. 3. Pull the rotor (the outer part with the magnets) off the stator (the inner part with the wire windings). Do this by grasping the base of the motor (which is also the foundation of the stator) with the fingers of one hand, and pull on the rotor with your other hand. There will be resistance from the magnets, so it takes a little effort. 4. At this point the motor is essentially in two pieces - you have the stator with the motor windings, and the rotor (with the magnets) attached to the shaft. Remove the shaft from the rotor with a hammer and small punch.
5. Once you have the shaft removed from the rotor simply insert the new shaft into the rotor from the inside. Press it into place as far as you can with your fingers. The shaft should be flush with the front of the rotor. 6. Now put the rotor (with the new shaft) back on the stator. The shaft will stick out the back of the stator. 7. Install the c-clip on the on the groove on the motor shaft behind the stator. 8. Using a small hammer, gently tap the shaft forward through the front of the rotor. When you are done, the c-clip will be aligned flush with the rear of the stator, and the motor shaft will protrude its normal length out the front of the motor.
9. Once the shaft is in position, put the set screws back in position in the rotor and tighten them back up. The motor will then be ready for use. *Note: For Emax CF & GF series motors, as well as the HURC 2712 series of motors, the above instructions apply. However, you must first remove the firewall mount or stick mount from the motor before proceeding; the set screws on the firewall mount usually require a 1.5mm Allen wrench, and it is generally quite easy to remove the mount from the motor. See you at the field. Alan Fry Training Coordinator
