4 4 Project Objectives Address Barriers to Adoption of EVs associated with: 1. Proprietary communications protocols for command & control of EV chargers 2. Retrofitting multi-unit residential buildings (MURBS) for EV charging 3. Residential high-density installations, and EV charging for Garage Orphans 4. Commercial parking lot installation, leveraging streetlight infrastructure 5. Induction charging readiness By Project Demonstrations of: Open protocols for interoperability, live status, and command & control of Level 2 and DCFC EV chargers Mitigation of instantaneous load, aggregate load, Power Factor, & THD associated with collections of L2 EVSE typically installed in MURB scenarios Low-cost curbside charging installations, including induction, leveraging existing streetlight infrastructure.

5 5 1. Addressing Proprietary Communications What will be demonstrated? Open, non-proprietary communication with L2 and DCFC chargers New dual standard DC charging station applying open protocols Expanded OASIS EMS and DCFC functionality - open-standard protocols for command and control. What is unique? Open, vendor-agnostic solutions. Leverages existing OASIS infrastructure and expertise with open protocols. Leverages existing expertise in DCFC functionality to extend support coverage for EV charging using open protocols.

6 6 2. Addressing MURB Retrofit Installations What will be demonstrated? Install metrology on the OASIS L2 chargers Measure and analyze loads and THDs Develop, install, test, analyze demand response THD & PF mitigation strategies. What is unique? Leverages existing OASIS infrastructure and expertise - EV load control and variable provisioning techniques. Analysis and recommendations to address grid integration issues associated with highdensity installations of EV Chargers leveraging OASIS grid integration expertise.

7 7 3. Addressing EV Charging for Garage Orphans What will be demonstrated? Curbside charging to address Garage Orphans those in dense urban areas who must park on the street. What is unique? Leveraging streetlight infrastructure to provision charging. Greatly reduced installation costs due to no requirement to trench. LED lighting retrofits free up electrical capacity (approximately 1 L2 charger per LED retrofits) Guidelines developed and tested in municipal field demonstration.

8 8 4. Addressing EV Charging for Commercial Lots What will be demonstrated? Provisioning EV Charging in commercial parking lots using lighting infrastructure. What is unique? Innovation here is using existing lighting infrastructure. No trenching is required. Existing conduit can be used. Existing capacity can provision EV charging during the day when lights are off. IBX variablegrid technology can intelligently monitor electrical panel usage to maximize EV charging. LED retrofits free up electrical capacity that can be used for EV charging.

9 9 5. Addressing Wireless Charging Standards What will be demonstrated? Two best-of-breed wireless induction charging stations at BCIT s Burnaby campus, and associated hardware installed in Nissan Leaf EVs What is unique? No standards for wireless induction charging project will afford the opportunity to inform standards work. Collaboration with vendors to test and validate products for commercial (vs residential) deployment.

10 10 Wireless Charging Project Findings Standards Work SAE recently published Recommended Practice J2954 Wireless Power Transfer for Light-Duty Plug-in/Electric Vehicles and Alignment Methodology Currently testing is under way to move that from RP to a standard Vendors participating in the J2954 testing include **: Qualcomm Evatran (aka Plugless Power) IHI (Japanese firm) Delphi Kaist (Korean firm) Lear Continental AG **

11 11 Wireless Charging Project Findings Testing: Started in Dec 2017 Expected to last approximately 1 year 3 different test labs in the US Testing For: Power transfer efficiency RF interference Interoperability Safety

12 12 Wireless Charging Project Findings Test Results Data will be shared only internally with committee members who have paid to be on the committee There *may* be some press releases toward the end of the process In the Interim: Almost all vendors have stopped shipping product until the standard is finalized (which is actually a good thing) Found a local firm with a non-standard wireless technology, but could not get a beta of their product in time for this project.
