Planning for Sustainability: Electric Vehicles NYSMPO Conference June 23, 2015 Jennifer Ceponis Sr Transportation Planner Clean Communities Coordinator

Clean Cities Mission To advance the energy, economic, and environmental security of the U.S. by supporting local decisions to reduce petroleum use in transportation. Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct) Provides a framework for businesses and government agencies to work together Goal: Reduce U.S. petroleum use by 2.5 billion gallons per year

Clean Cities in New York Annual Petroleum Fuel Displaced: Annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions Avoided: 40,113,287 Million Gallons 150,722 Tons of CO2 Alternative Fueling Stations: 1,019 Natural Gas: 95 Propane: 47 Electric Charging: 769 Ethanol (E85): 74 Biodisel (B20 & above): 34

Capital District Clean Communities Established in 1999, CDTC leadership since members from 60+ different local governments, agencies, organizations, and businesses Displace over 1,000,000 gallons of petroleum annually Supported by CDTC in UPWP and New Visions

Capital District Transportation Committee The CDTC is the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Albany & Saratoga Springs urbanized area. Maintains long range plan: New Visions 2040 ( Alternative Fuel Set-Aside How does transportation infrastructure shape the region?

Why Plan for EVs? Electric vehicles represent an opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to save energy. Ninety-six percent of commuters in the CDTC planning area have a round-trip commute less than 60 miles, which is within the range of an electric vehicle that is charged overnight at home. The CDRPC study reported that because New York s power grid is one of the cleanest in the nation, switching passenger cars from gasoline to electric will reduce emissions by 75% per mile. The New Visions plan supports investments in electric vehicle charging infrastructure CDTC Draft New Visions 2040
