Solar Energy Society of Alberta September 6, 2018 Charging Up! Edmonton s Electric Vehicle Strategy
Strategic Alignment Implementation of Edmonton s Electric Vehicle Strategy contributes to the City s Climate Resilience goals
Transportation Impacts Transportation sector in Edmonton accounts for: Nearly 30% of GHG emissions approximately 5 million tonnes annually About 42% of energy consumption as much as all of the buildings in Edmonton combined. Vehicles produce a host of air contaminants. Daily car trips up by 670,000 over past two decades, a nearly 40% increase.
Focus on Electric Electricity widely available, accessible, affordable Can be produced from renewables Tesla plugged in at Jasper Place Library Builds energy resiliency in our transportation system Focus on Battery Electric and Plug-in Hybrid EVs Nissan Leaf at South Edmonton Common MEC
What s an EV Fully Electric Use only electricity Zero tailpipe emissions Cheap to operate and maintain Plug-In Hybrid Use electricity & gas Has electric range of 20 to 80 km before gas engine takes over Cheaper to operate than other hybrid cars
Benefits to Edmontonians Reduced emission 600,000 tonnes CO2e avoided* Less energy used 9,500 megajoules conserved* Cost savings $90 million saved by owners* Improved air quality Reduced human respiratory issues Reduced urban noise Compatibility Automated Vehicles Energy resiliency * By 2040, with 32% of new car and SUV sales captured by electric vehicles.
Global Trends Source: McKinsey & Company, 2018
National Trends Nearly 50,000 EVs on Canadian roads Source: FleetCarma, 2018
National Trends QC, ON, BC have 96% of EVs in Canada
Provincial Trends 1,130 EVs on Alberta roads today 48% increase from 2016 (762 EVs) Electric Vehicles Registered in Alberta (Source: IHS Polk) IMAGE HERE
The EV Picture in YEG 379 EVs on Edmonton s streets (as of end 2017) 61% increase from 2016 (235 EVs) About 1/3 of Alberta's total EVs 15 model types, most popular are: Tesla Model S, Nissan Leaf, Volvo XC90, Chevy Volt
We re an EV family too!
Great benefits - what s the hold up?
Top EV Barriers Source: McKinsey & Company, 2017
Battery Costs Falling Source: McKinsey & Company, 2017
The 'Range Anxiety' Myth Ideal for urban living - distance per charge more than enough for average Edmonton household daily travel needs
Charging on the Go 29 charging locations in and around Edmonton. 1st DC Fast charger in AB at Londonderry Mall. Working with ATCO on curbside charging pilot. ATCO fast charging on QE2 corridor. Mapping future charging hot-spots.
Vehicle Options & Choice
Other concerns?
Charging (& Cold Weather) Can impact range and charging time Can reduce range from 25-40%, depending on on temp, driving style, type of vehicle. EV technology improving to respond to cold weather (e.g. preconditioning)
Coal-powered car? AB grid is greening Coal decommissioning + 30% renewables by U of C Study: EV generates 1.24 tonnes GHG less per year than gas vehicle in AB. Cars on the road a long time - need to consider emissions over time.
Edmonton s EV Strategy
Approach to Strategy Best practice research Stakeholder consultation Research with Edmontonians + modelling future EV impacts
Strategic Opportunity Areas Education & Marketing Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Incentives & Financial Tools Regulations City Leadership Collaboration, Partnerships & Advocacy
Education and Marketing Public Education & Marketing Activities Comprehensive EV info website Support Drive Electric Week "How to Own an EV" resources Support professionals at auto dealerships EV Q&A literature for customer information Identify "EV Champions" Work with dealers to increase EV offerings
EV Charging Infrastructure Improve home, workplace and on-the-go charging EV-readiness in homes and buildings Guides for condo owners/condo boards EV charging pilot projects Support regional, long-distance charging networks
Incentives and Financial Tools Non Permanent incentives and on-going benefits Rebate programs Green lanes Advocate for: vehicle purchase incentives retirement rebates registration fee reductions
Regulations Leverage regulations and City processes to support EVs Support other orders of gov't in implementing zero emission vehicle mandate
Collaborations and Partnerships Collaborate to facilitate greater EV uptake Provincial and federal gov ts Utilities Auto industry and non-profits Car share and ridesharing companies
City Leadership Greening the City fleet 25 e-buses in service by summer Demonstration at municipal facilities EV charging already available at three City libraries. Innovative programs to reduce EV-related purchase cost
Residential Solar Rebate EEA and City offering rebates for home solar systems. $0.15/watt from City + $0.75/watt from EEA - covers roughly a third of the costs. Single and multi-family homes are eligible. Visit changeforclimate.ca/homes for more details.
Solar Potential Map Solar potential map gives Edmontonians an estimate of the amount of power from solar PV. Just type in your address to see the solar potential of your home. Visit: myheat.ca/solar/edmonton
