6 2.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS 2.1 Specification MIL-C-70842, dated 15 August GENERAL INFORMATION 3.1 Test Equipment All test instrumentation was calibrated in accordance with ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 or ISO 10012, as applicable, and is traceable to a recognized National Metrology Institute (NMI). 7 3.0 GENERAL INFORMATION (continued) 3.2 Test Conditions Unless specified herein, all tests and measurements were performed at the room ambient conditions existing at the laboratory during testing: Temperature: 10 C to 40 C Relative Humidity: Ambient to 90% 3.3 Test Witnessing/Monitoring All testing was conducted by a qualified Element Portland Environmental Test Technician under the direction and cognizance of the Lab Manager and Quality Assurance. 3.4 Test Recording Chronological logs of all significant events are maintained by test lab personnel and indicate date, times and descriptions of conditions. These logs are used as reference, retained at Element and available upon request. 8 4.0 Salt Fog Procedures 4.1 Setup Two (2) ammo cans, serial numbers SF1 and SF2, were visually inspected with no signs of damage or any other anomalies noted Note: For Run 1, the body of the ammo cans were the actual test articles, the lids were not being tested The test units were scribed with a line on each side Test units SF1 and SF2 were installed in the salt fog chamber at a 15 degree angle from horizontal. 4.2 Run 1 Steps (Ammo Cans) Began 80 hours of exposure to a 5% salt fog solution, at +35 C, with a ph from 6.5 to Salt fog fallout was collected approximately hours after start of testing specific gravity (SG), 6.77pH No fallout rate was collected due to the tubes overfilling over the weekend Completed 80 hours of salt of exposure, the test units were removed from the chamber and fallout was collected mL: 2.13 ml/80cm2/hr, 1.031SG, 6.65pH Test units were rinsed and the scribe marks were scraped and evaluated No corrosion extended past the scribe marks No blistering or flaking was visible on the ammo can sides (SF1 and SF2) The lids had paint flaked off, but there was no corrosion past the scribe noted The customer was notified and replacement lids were sent for testing Upon test completion, at ambient conditions, the units were visually inspected, then returned to customer for final analysis. 9 4.3 Run 2 Steps (Lids) Two (2) ammo can lids, serial numbers SFL1 and SFL2, were visually inspected with no signs of damage or any other anomalies noted Note: For Run 2, only ammo can lids were tested Test units SFL1 and SFL2 were installed in the salt fog chamber at a 15 degree angle from horizontal Began 80 hours of exposure to a 5% salt fog solution, at +35 C, with a ph from 6.5 to Salt fog fallout was collected approximately 24 and 48 hours after start of testing hours: 97mL: 2.02mL/80cm2/hr, 1.030SG, 6.56pH hours: 110mL: 2.29mL/80cm2/hr, 1.031SG, 6.59pH Completed 80 hours of salt of exposure, the test units were removed from the chamber and fallout was collected mL: 2.16mL/80cm2/hr, 1.031SG, 6.54pH Test units were rinsed and the scribe marks were scraped and evaluated SFL2 had minor paint flaking at scribe point Under 1/8 of an inch; unit met requirements Upon test completion, at ambient conditions, the units were visually inspected, then returned to customer for final analysis. 4.4 Results Test units SF1, SF2, and SFL1 had no corrosion beyond the scribe marks and no blistering or flaking noted Test unit SFL2 had minor paint flaking at the scribe location Under 1/8 of an inch; unit met requirements Test photographs provided in Appendix A Applicable graphs, charts, and/or plots provided in Appendix B. 10 5.0 Tensile Procedures 5.1 Setup Two (2) ammo cans, serial numbers T1 and T2, were visually inspected with no signs of damage or any other anomalies noted. 5.2 Steps Test unit T1 was setup on the test machine Applied a 600lb load for one minute on test unit T1 s latch assembly No bending or distortion observed Test unit T2 was setup on the test machine Applied a 600lb load for one minute on test unit T2 s latch assembly No bending or distortion observed Test unit T1 was setup on the test machine Applied a 600lb load for one minute on test unit T1 s wire handle assembly No bending or distortion observed Test unit T2 was setup on the test machine Applied a 600lb load for one minute on test unit T2 s wire handle assembly No bending or distortion observed Test unit T1 was setup on the test machine Applied a 1200lb load for one minute on test unit T1 s hasp assembly Slight deformation of the box and hasp assembly. No broken welds or detached components observed Test unit T2 was setup on the test machine Applied a 600lb load for one minute on test unit T2 s hasp assembly Slight deformation of the box and hasp assembly. No broken welds or detached components observed Upon test completion, at ambient conditions, the test units were visually inspected, then returned to customer for final analysis. 5.3 Results No bending or distortion observed on T1 s or T2 s latch assembly at 600lbs No bending or distortion observed on T1 s or T2 s wire handle assembly at 600lbs Slight deformation observed on both T1 s and T2 box and hasp assembly at 1200lbs No broken welds or detached components observed Test photographs provided in Appendix A. 11 6.0 Airtightness Procedures 6.1 Setup Two (2) ammo cans, serial numbers A1 and A2, were visually inspected with no signs of damage or any other anomalies noted A pressure port was installed on the bottoms of the cans. 6.2 Steps The test units were inverted and placed in a dunk tank full of room temperature water The lids and gaskets were completely submerged Applied internal pressure of 3psi for a minimum of 30 seconds Upon test completion, at ambient conditions, the test units were visually inspected, then returned to customer for final analysis. 6.3 Results No signs of damage or bubbles observed from either test unit Test photographs provided in Appendix A.
