3 MGA Report No.: C07Q Customer: Underground Technologies Page 2 of 26 Introduction: MGA Research is to perform test and provide testing results for the Underground Technologies man-hole adjustment ring. The test is to prove that the man-hole construction will pass the ASHTO HS 25 and consequently the HS 20 testing protocol. ASHTO HS-25 Testing Protocol: The ASHTO HS-25 testing protocol represents the loading of a 25 ton (50,000 lbs ) semi-truck would exert onto a highway bridge. Since there is no specification for compression strength of man-hole adjustment rings, this testing protocol will be used. See Appendix A. Load Calculations: When investigating the free body diagram of the protocol; for HS-25 the load is determined by using 40,000 lbs times a factor of 0.4, thus the loads are calculated. Static Load: 16,000 lbs on a 10 x 20 patch. Dynamic Load: 1.3 times the static load; 20,800 lbs. This load simulates the load of the tire patch dropping one foot on to the manhole cover. * Please note the ASHTO HS-25 doubles the weight required on the tire patch. Standard axles are rated at a maximum capacity of 16,000 lbs. total. Normal maximum weight exerted on each wheel combination or patch in a real world scenario would be 8,000 lbs.
4 MGA Report No.: C07Q Customer: Underground Technologies Page 3 of 26 Test Setup: The Grade Ring and Finish Ring were placed on a base plate of the Crusher Ld. Cell which has a capacity of 50,000 lbs. Deflection measurements were taken digitally with a MTS Multi-purpose static analyzer. Two cameras were set up to monitor the test; one for a global view, two, a side profile of stacked rings. The load is exerted on the manhole cover with a 10 x 20 plate as specified to reflect the AASHTO-HS25 specification. Test Samples: Three samples were tested: # Configuration Test Identification 1) 5 ½ Grade Ring with 1 ½ Finish Ring VE7314 2) 1 ½ Grade Ring with 1 ½ Finish Ring VE7315 3) 2 Restoration Ring ( No grade or finish ) VE7316 Test Procedures: Two test samples will consist of a grade and finish ring of different height configurations. The third test sample consisted of a single Restoration Ring. The test samples The load of the hydraulic test apparatus will exert on top of the manhole frame and cover assembly. Step 1: Apply in 5,000 lb increments and hold for five minutes while taking measurements. Step 2: Increase load to 10,000 lbs. and hold for five minutes while taking measurements. Step 3: Apply additional 6,000 lbs. and hold for 10 minutes. This will bring the total load to 16,000 lbs. which will represents the maximum load for the AASHTO-HS25 static test. Step 4: Increase load to 20,800 take measurements, backing load off to for 500ms and reloading to the 20,800 in 500 ms. Repeat 3 times. This load will represent the maximum load for the AASHTO-HS25 dynamic test. Step 5: Increase load to 40,000 lbs. and hold. This is the destructive test to indicate the permanent set or deflection of an excessive load.
5 MGA Report No.: C07Q Customer: Underground Technologies Page 4 of 26 Results: Load (lbs)/sample (in) VE7314- ( 5.5G & 1.5F) VE7315- ( 1.5G & 1.5F) VE7316- ( 2R) 5, , ,000 HS-25 Static ,800 HS-25 Dynamic ,000 Destructive Conclusion: The results table shows the deflection relative to the load step. The deflections were low at the specified AASHTO HS-25 Dynamic load (20,800 lbs.) with no permanent set to the Grade or Finish Ring. All rings rebounded to original state. The permanent set or deflection occurred at the 40,000 lb. destructive test. The permanent deflection was measured at 1/32 for the Grade and Finish rings. Although localized bucking phenomena occurred at the 40,000 lb. load, the test samples remained intact with no cracking of the exterior seal.
