2 Safety WARNING: READ ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE PROCEEDING. ONLY EXPERIENCED PERSONNEL SHOULD INSTALL OR HANDLE WYATT ENGINEERING METER(S). ANY DAMAGE RESULTING FROM MISHANDLING OR IMPROPER INSTALLATION IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. FOR WARRANTY DETAILS, REFER TO THE LATEST REVISION OF WYATT ENGINEERING S TERMS AND CONDITIONS. (These instructions are meant as a guide only: They cannot cover every situation and rely on the common sense and expertise of the personnel installing the meter. Wyatt Engineering is not liable for any damage to the meter, the system, or for personal injury resulting from incorrect installation or the use of these guidelines.) General: Maximum allowed process pressure is given in the specific meter documentation (CE-marked meters have this information on the nameplate). Over-pressurization due to fluid heating, chemical reaction, explosion, external fire, etc. can cause pressure containment failure. Other means, therefore, must be taken to prevent over-pressurization. Allowable process temperatures are given in the specific meter documentation (CE-marked meters have this information on the nameplate). Higher or lower temperatures than those considered (due to process fluid, chemical reaction, environment, conduction, convection, etc.) can cause pressure containment failure. Other means must be taken to prevent temperatures beyond the design range. Pressure and temperature ratings are process-based, unless indicated otherwise. Additional loads must be accounted for by the end-user. Avoid scraping or scratching the coated surfaces. Touch-up coatings as needed. Prior to Start-Up: Prior to installation, inspect meter(s) for any damage. If a meter appears damaged in any way, contact the local Wyatt Engineering Representative, or contact Wyatt Engineering directly. Refer to Wyatt Engineering Terms and Conditions for warranty information. Meters are not to be used as safety accessories as defined in the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 97/23/EC. Pipe insulation and/or insert-type meters may not be visible when installed. The end user should identify the presence of the meter in the pipeline and take precautions to avoid injury and/or discharge if the line is to be disassembled. Any risk arising from external fire must be accounted for independent of the Wyatt Engineering meter. Determine that the meter is installed with the arrow on the nameplate and on the meter body pointing in the direction of the flow. Determine that the meter is properly installed: The venturi meter is a piping component and should be handled with the same safety precautions. DO NOT HANDLE METER FROM ITS INSIDE. Note that the meter(s) must be adequately supported by the adjacent pipe to prevent excess loading on the meter body. DO NOT USE THE METER AS A PIPE SUPPORT. Determine that the piping on both sides of the meter(s) is properly aligned before installation. Refer to ASME Pressure Piping and local codes for alignment and gap specifications. Determine that all pressure connections are proper and are appropriate for the intended service. Meter(s) must be properly connected (threaded, welded, etc.) to surrounding piping to prevent unsafe discharge during filling and/or operation. Determine that no threaded connections are damaged. Determine that the meter has been installed in conformance with the Installation Notes included in this manual. At Start-Up: Do not over-pressurize the meter. Refer to Wyatt Engineering documentation for design pressure. Do not subject meter to shock pressures or water hammer. Do not subject meter to shock temperatures. When filling pipeline, bleed-off trapped gases (fluid service) or trapped fluids (gas service). After Start-Up: Do not over-pressurize the meter. Refer to Wyatt Engineering documentation for design pressure. Do not subject meter to shock pressures and/or to shock temperatures. Wyatt Engineering meters are not designed to withstand stress due to the decomposition of unstable process media. CE-marked meters have been evaluated using the ASME Codes with respect to fatigue life. EXCEEDING THE FATIGUE LIFE OF THE METER MAY RESULT IN SUDDEN METER FAILURE. Contact Wyatt Engineering for cycle information. To avoid personal injury, do not touch surface of meter(s) if the process fluid is hotter or colder than room temperature. Allow the meter(s) to return to room temperature before removing or servicing. Conform to Preventive Maintenance procedures included in this manual. 3 Wyatt Engineering Transport and Storage Requirements for Flow Elements WARNING: READ ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE PROCEEDING. ONLY EXPERIENCED PERSONNEL SHOULD HANDLE WYATT ENGINEERING METER(S). Wyatt Engineering is not liable for any damage to the meter, the system, or for personal injury resulting from incorrect installation or the use of these guidelines.) Regardless of length of storage, it is recommended that the meters be stored in the same crates or on the same skids as shipped. Meter Transport: Depending on unit and order size, the venturi meters are in crates or boxes, or strapped or bolted to pallets or skids. If palletized or skidded, the meters can be moved by a forklift of adequate capacity. Cradle the pallet or skid with the forks. DO NOT DRIVE THE FORKS THROUGH THE PROTECTIVE CAPS OR INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE METER. The meters can be lifted by a crane or forklift using an appropriate sling. If provided, utilize the lifting lugs. Avoid scraping or scratching the coated surfaces. Touch-up coatings as needed. Indoor Storage: The Wyatt Engineering venturi flow meters can be stored indefinitely indoors. Meters should be stored away from high traffic areas in order to minimize damage risk. Meters must not be stacked. Meters may have uncoated iron or steel surfaces, or lightly primed flange faces as required by the contract documents. If meters are to be stored in humid or corrosive areas, the flange faces may need a suitable rust preventative coating. Note that any coating or sealant should be removed prior to installation: Refer to the contract documents and applicable standards or local codes. Prolonged exposure to light may discolor, de-gloss, and/or cause chalking of the finishes. If storage is to be long-term, it is recommended that meters be covered with a tarp or plastic sheeting in a dry location. Outdoor Storage Short-Term (less than 3 months): Meters should be stored away from high traffic areas in order to minimize damage risk. Meters must not be stacked. If meters will be stored in humid or corrosive areas, uncoated surfaces may need to be coated with a suitable rust preventative appropriate for outdoor exposure. Note that any coating or sealant should be removed prior to installation: Refer to the contract documents and applicable standards or local codes. The ends are capped to eliminate foreign matter from damaging the internal portions of the meter. These caps must not be removed until installation. The pressure sensing tap connections have pipe plugs or caps for thread protection and/or to minimize the probability of clogging. Do not remove until installation. If any coating is damaged during storage, it must be touched-up with the same or a compatible coating system. Note that prolonged exposure to sunlight may discolor, de-gloss, or chalk finishes. It is recommended that the meters be covered with a tarp or heavy plastic sheeting in a dry location. Outdoor Storage Long-Term (3 months or more): Long-term storage is the same as short-term storage, except it is mandatory that the meters be covered with a tarp or heavy plastic sheeting. 4 Installation Notes WARNING: READ ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE PROCEEDING. ONLY EXPERIENCED PERSONNEL SHOULD HANDLE WYATT ENGINEERING METER(S). ANY DAMAGE RESULTING FROM MISHANDLING OR IMPROPER INSTALLATION IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. FOR WARRANTY DETAILS, REFER TO THE LATEST REVISION OF WYATT ENGINEERING S TERMS AND CONDITIONS. (These installation notes are only a guide: They do not cover every situation and assume a level of common sense and expertise of the personnel installing the meter. Wyatt Engineering is not liable for any damage to the meter, the system, or for personal injury resulting from incorrect installation or the use of these guidelines.) This is a high quality, precise Wyatt Engineering flow measurement device. If it is improperly installed, it may not perform as specified, or could become damaged. If improperly installed, the meter should be reinstalled. If it is damaged, it should be repaired or replaced; contact Wyatt Engineering or your local Wyatt Engineering representative for further instructions. Prior to installation, inspect meter(s) for any damage. If a meter appears damaged in any way, contact the local Wyatt Engineering Representative, or contact Wyatt Engineering directly. Refer to Wyatt Engineering Terms and Conditions for warranty information. Do not install the meter immediately downstream of any component that could disrupt the flow pattern. Wyatt Engineering meters are best suited for installations with symmetric flow. If in doubt, contact the local Wyatt Engineering Representative, or contact Wyatt Engineering directly for installation guidance. The meter(s) can be damaged by misalignment, over-tightening, and piping system loads that affect the joint(s) at the meter. Handle it from its exterior; do not damage its internal surfaces. Install meter in the pipeline so that the arrow on the nameplate and on the meter body agrees with the direction of the flow. Provide necessary clearances as deemed practical for installation, inspection, and maintenance. Center the meter carefully in the pipe and assure the piping on both sides of the meter(s) is properly aligned before installation (refer to ASME Pressure Piping and local codes for alignment and gap specifications). Gaskets must not protrude into the flow or block any pressure taps. Pipe flanges must be parallel and properly aligned to prevent damage to the meter flange or flanges. Tolerances should be in accordance with industry standards and local codes. The meter(s) must be adequately supported by the adjacent pipe to prevent excess loading on the meter body. THE METER BODY MUST NOT BE USED AS A POINT OF SUPPORT FOR THE PIPELINE. If it is necessary to provide supports, the unit may be supported at the holding flanges only. Use standard piping procedures for threaded connections. Insure that threaded connections are not damaged in installation. Use standard piping procedures regarding butt-weld and/or socket-weld connections. When welding, use industry-standard welding procedures and safety precautions. A material test report and data safety sheet for the body material will be provided upon request. WARNING: A meter can be damaged by excessive heat that may distort materials or compromise coating systems, leading to unit failure. Use a heat sink or other means to prevent damage from occurring. Use standard piping procedures regarding gasket type, use, and proper torquing of flange bolts. Do not over-torque bolts. As a rule, pressure taps should be on the horizontal plane. Refer to contract documents and/or installation instructions of secondary instrumentation supplier for further details. Ensure that all pressure connections are proper and are appropriate for the intended service. Meter(s) must be properly connected (threaded, welded, etc.) to surrounding piping to prevent unsafe discharge during filling and/or operation. With insert-type meters (weld-in and flange mount), make sure the pipe inside diameter matches that given on the nameplate. This type of meter extends into upstream and downstream pipe and incorrect pipe size can lead to flow measurement error and/or damage to the meter (contact the local Wyatt Engineering Representative, or contact Wyatt Engineering directly with any questions). Install insert-type meter(s) between the pipe flanges with a gasket on each side of the meter mounting flange. Ensure that each meter is centered inside the bolt circle and tighten the bolts. With flange-mount insert-type meters, verify that the meter mounting flange is appropriate for the adjacent pipe flanges. The mounting flange outside diameter should equal the pipe flange bolt circle diameter minus the bolt hole diameter. With weld-in insert-type meters, verify that the meter mounting block has the same outside diameter as the adjacent pipe. Wyatt Engineering seeks the highest level of quality and performance in its products. If you have comments regarding its products, these notes, or require additional information or assistance, please contact your local representative or contact Wyatt Engineering directly. 4

6 Maintenance and Spare Parts Preventive Maintenance: Maintenance or other qualified personnel should visually inspect the meters for signs of wear that could adversely affect meter performance or safety. For meters installed in corrosive media, process personnel should establish appropriate inspection schedules to ensure the continued safe use of the meter(s). Corrosion allowances are available upon request for all meters. It is the end-user s responsibility to determine the suitability of the meter material for the internal and external environment in which it is used. Refer to Wyatt Engineering documentation for information regarding materials of construction and protective coatings. Where the possibility of condensation of gaseous fluids exists, meter drain ports (if provided) should be used for drainage and removal of deposits to avoid damage from corrosion. WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED DRILLING OF VENT OR DRAIN PORTS WILL VOID THE METER WARRANTY AND POSSIBLY LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC METER FAILURE AND PERSONAL INJURY. Refer to Wyatt Engineering documentation for information regarding materials of construction and protective coatings. Suitability of the meter body material when connected with the surrounding piping material is the sole responsibility of the enduser. Galvanic reactions can lead to material loss that can lead to failure of the pressure boundary. Refer to Wyatt Engineering documentation for information regarding materials of construction and protective coatings. To avoid personal injury, do not touch surface of meter(s) if the process fluid is hotter or colder than room temperature. Allow the meter(s) to return to room temperature before removing or servicing. If the meter is to be removed from the line for any reason, depressurize and drain the pipeline. Move meter with slings or strapping appropriate for the weight and geometry of the meter. Flange and pressure tap connections should be checked for leaks annually by Qualified Maintenance Personnel. Exterior finish should be examined annually for scrapes, dings, or blisters by Qualified Maintenance Personnel. Note that process debris can prevent the meter from operating properly and/or erode the meter body. During shut-down, interior surfaces should be examined for wear or corrosion by Instrumentation Qualified Maintenance Personnel. Care should be exercised when cleaning meters to protect them against excessive pressure, temperature, and/or corrosion. No special tools or skills are necessary for preventive maintenance tasking. No preventive maintenance parts list is applicable. Corrective Maintenance: In case of loss-of-signal or erratic output, check taps and impulse piping to secondary instrumentation for blockage or debris. Check signal piping for leaks, trapped condensation (in the case of compressible gas flow), or trapped air (in the case of liquid flow). In case of blockage, purge lines with purge gas or purge liquid (as is appropriate) pressurized to approximately 20 PSI above line pressure. WARNING: PURGE PRESSURE MUST NOT EXCEED DESIGN PRESSURES OF THE PROCESS OR SIGNAL PIPING. In case of trapped condensate or trapped air, remove by use of bleed valves or plugs, or through the manifold at the flow transmitter. Stop leaks by tightening, resealing, or replacing gaskets, as necessary. Touch-up damaged finishes with the same or a compatible coating system as necessary.
