2 VEROTEC TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS EMC PROTECTION The VEROTEC cases have been designed to offer inherent EMC/RFI protection and, with the addition of tinned copper fingers, will provide high level attenuation figures across a broad frequency range. EMC front and rear panels are available as standard options from stock, a separate shortform catalogue entitled 'The Science of Compliance' gives a comprehensive designers guide to EMC issues (VE No. 654/95 ). IP55 gives a good level of protection within most industrial environments. Once again the design of the VEROTEC cases allows you to choose this option as an upgrade path. Although ingress is not completely prevented, dust will not enter in sufficient quantity to impair the operation or safety of the apparatus. WATER PROTECTION 2nd index 5 Protection against jet water A jet of water projected from a standard nozzle at 12.5 litres per minute against the object from all directions must not have any harmful effect. THERMAL MANAGEMENT Vented side panels, bottom covers and rear panels as standard options offer many opportunities for effective thermal management. All vent hole patterns have been designed to minimise the degradation in RFI/EMI shielding effectiveness and, with the addition of fans forced air cooling solutions can also be achieved. 5.03

Equipment can be housed in a standard 1U envelope and benefit from a stacking facility as standard. There are no visible fixings so your product can be secure and visually clean. 5 1U BASIC CASES 1U CASES A basic case is supplied as standard. This can be fitted with standard front and rear panels to provide a basic low EMC packaging solution. When choosing an upgrade path, simply select the relevant accessories to achieve a higher level of EMC screening, IP sealing or both. To achieve levels of EMC or IP protection front and rear panels must be fitted to a basic case, see P for details. These units are supplied assembled. EMC PROTECTION To achieve higher level of EMC screening an EMC conversion kit should be ordered, see P.5.15 for details. This is achieved using copper or tinned copper contact strips. These can be clipped into pre-selected positions according to the level of shielding required. An interior front and rear frame ensures contact to the top and bottom covers. IP SEALING GENERAL ASSEMBLY - HORIZONTAL VERSION IP sealing is achieved by the inclusion of PVC/ nitrile seals (top & bottom covers) and rubber gaskets at the corner joints. In order to achieve IP55 it is necessary to order IP/ EMC front and rear panels as accessories and an IP55 sealing kit see P Non-vented cases should be ordered to achieve IP55 sealing. 10 CD CASES INTRODUCTION These units have been designed specifically to accommodate an array of data storage media. In both floppy and optical formats 5.25" drives may be stacked, in a tower format, giving a maximum of 9 drives in the full height unit and a maximum of 4 drives in the half height unit. Unused drive apertures can be blanked and offered as an expansion option. 11 CD CASES CD CASES VEROTEC CD cases are supplied in a basic format offering a 'LOW' EMC solution. If preferred, they can be upgraded to offer equal levels of attenuation using an EMC kit with EMC front and rear panels with the addition of accessories such as the transparent front facia. The CD VEROTEC cases offer a very aesthetic product with excellent technical performance. EMC PROTECTION This is achieved using copper or tinned copper contact strips. These can be clipped into preselected positions according to the level of shielding required. An interior front and rear frame ensures contact to the top and bottom covers. 12 ACCESSORIES SELECTING REAR PANELS There is a choice of rear panels available for the VEROTEC case range according to the level of ventilation, EMC or IP 1. VENTED REAR PANELS These are complete with an EMC vent pattern for convectional cooling. These panels do not provide EMC contact to the case. 2. EMC / IP REAR PANELS These should be used in conjunction with EMC / IP cases. 13 ACCESSORIES SELECTING FRONT PANELS There is a choice of front panels to suit low EMC, IP, high EMC VEROTEC cases. 1. PLAIN FRONT PANELS These are anodised aluminium front panels which offer an aesthetic facia for component mounting and silk screening. 2. EMC / IP FRONT PANELS This is a two part construction, consisting of an aluminium panel with an interior panel attached. 14 ACCESSORIES TRANSPARENT FRONT DOORS VEROTEC cases can be fitted with these stylish and attractive transparent doors, giving both security and aesthetics. 2U and 3U doors are horizontally hinged, making them ideal for both horizontal and vertical versions. CD doors are vertically hinged giving an approximate opening angle of 110. The attenuation figures may be increased or decreased according to the number of clip-in contact fingers added. 15 IP55 SEALING KITS ACCESSORIES Prevention of the ingress of dust and moisture in an enclosure is particularly relevant in an industrial environment. Typically IP55 will offer this type of protection. This is achieved by the addition of an IP sealing kit to the basic case with front and rear panels. 16 ACCESSORIES CHASSIS TRAYS AND SUPPORTS Chassis supports are available to provide additional support for 19" chassis or cardframes within the enclosures. Each kit comprises two runners and all necessary fixings. A range of chassis trays are available for mounting processor boards or other components. It is supplied as a kit of two mountings which can be attached directly to the rear panels. The choice of location on the rear panel is a function of other component locations and the length of cable to be stored. 17 EURO INNER FRAME ACCESSORIES This inner frame arrangement will allow double eurocard pcbs to be fitted directly to half width cases. 18 ACCESSORIES 5.25 DRIVE SUPPORTS These side plates are to be used in conjunction with the CD tower units. These allow CD ROM drives to be stacked in an array of 4 high in the half height tower and 9 high in the full height tower. If an increased array density is required then do not use the front panel kit, and stack drives directly above each other (12 & 6 drives). 22 DIPLOMAT CASES NEW AND IMPROVED COOLING PERFORMANCE The DIPLOMAT range of enclosures has improved cooling performance in both the standard and fan plinth versions. The fan plinth version has a wider plinth with an increased ventilation surface area to increase the volume of air flow. The plinth can either act as a chamber for air collection when fans are mounted on the rear panel of the unit (pull through air flow) or can be used to mount fans directly hence employing a push method of cooling. Fans can be mounted in the plinth and on the rear panel employing a push-pull method of cooling. Ducting plates can be placed in the plinth to give additional direction to the air flow, concentrating the flow towards hot cards or components. The level of cooling performance achieved will depend on a number of variables, such as the internal component architecture and hot component positioning. A test was set up where a 6U DIPLOMAT unit 19" wide was fitted with a populated card frame, 220mm boards to a 6U full width backplane, and air flow indicating componentry. Two 95CFM fans were mounted on the rear panel and a standard ducting plate used to direct the air across the cards, the results recorded are shown below. The results below were measurements of air velocity taken from the standard DIPLOMAT with new 38mm deep plinth with ducting plate, and 2 x 95 CFM fans mounted on the rear panel. The top panel was non ventilated. 23 SHIELDING EFFECTIVENESS FOR 3U X 422 DIPLOMAT 19" CASE DIPLOMAT CASES DIPLOMAT SHIELDING EFFECTIVENESS RESULTS The shielding effectiveness results shown have been measured in VERO s EMC test facility using a test procedure based on MIL-STD 285 and adapted for smaller enclosures. ATTENUATION (Db) H = Field FREQUENCY (Hz) SUPPRESSION E = Field 10K 100K 1M 10M 100M 1G Isolated from ambient electromagnetic interference within a screened room, magnetic and electric field signals are radiated at discrete frequencies inside the enclosure under test. Field strengths at positions around the enclosure are compared with equivalent control measurements to determine the signal attenuation by the enclosure at each frequency. Shielding effectiveness may vary around the enclosure and, where appropriate, minimum values are quoted. The graph shows typical attenuation figures achieved for a 3U 19" DIPLOMAT case, which has been fitted with standard front and rear panels. The performance achieved shows that in both the E and the H field the unit will provide fairly high levels of attenuation across a broad frequency band. EMC AND IP PROTECTION EMISSION The DIPLOMAT range of enclosures have undergone a series of technical performance tests. The EMC tests were carried out in accordance with MIL-STD 285, modified where necessary due to the nature of the enclosure. The results shown are worst case and units were not fitted with any additional metalwork. The performance of the units may be improved when internal chassis and EMC front panels are included. The DIPLOMAT range was also tested for the ingress of dust using a standard BSI probe. The unit passed a test which gives an IP rating of 30. The unit was not tested for the ingress of water. The cooling performance of this unit has also been improved, especially in the slot 1 region of VME systems, where hot cards are often situated. Many of today s electronic systems produce high levels of waste heat. To combat this the DIPLOMAT system includes a range of units complete with cooling plinths to provide efficient cooling without loss of valuable internal space. CONSTRUCTION Each DIPLOMAT case consists of a front and rear die-cast bezel, aluminium side extrusions and steel cover panels. The construction is extremely strong and simple to assemble. The top and bottom covers are secured to the basic frame with two fixings which pass through the rear bezel. Location tags secure the covers to the front bezel. The infill covers on 6U and 9U units are fitted in the same way. Bottom covers include ventilation slots. All horizontal units have a side handle extrusion to enable portability. These extrusions also incorporate T slots which allow internal mounting of chassis and accessories. VERTICAL TOWER VERSIONS The tower versions are suitable either under, or next to, a desk and therefore reduce the amount of desk space demanded by the system. They are identical in basic construction to the standard cases but have some additions. Two feet assemblies are fitted into the handle recess on the side extrusions to form a base. Each DIPLOMAT consists of a front and rear diecast bezel, aluminium side extrusions and steel cover panels. The construction, whilst being extremely strong, is light-weight. The aluminium side extrusions, which are secured to the bezels with four fixings front and rear, have a handle feature to enable the unit to be carried easily. The extrusions also have two rows of fixing holes on a 12mm pitch for KM6-I tie bars. Two and four side extrusions are provided on 3U and 6U units respectively. Top and bottom covers are secured to the basic frame with two fixings, which pass through the rear bezel, and location tags which fit into the front bezel. The 6U infill covers are secured in the same way. Bottom covers also include ventilation slots. Each DIPLOMAT is supplied assembled, two front trims which hide the case fixing screws are ordered as accessories and four non-slip feet, two of which can be tilted, are included. The screws also provide earth continuity between components. The DIPLOMAT caseframe is designed for desk mounted or portable applications. Its light-weight yet robust construction makes it ideally suited for use in office, laboratory or factory environments. Fully compatible with VERO Electronics market leading KM6-I subrack system, the caseframe directly accepts Eurocards and plug-in modules conforming to IEC 297-3, DIN pt5 and BS 5954 specifications. KM6-I tiebars, card guides and accessories may be fitted without modification. Two versions of the DIPLOMAT are available - standard units for general purpose applications and fan plinth units for use when heat is a problem. Available in two sizes, they provide side mounting facilities for 12U of 19" subracks or chassis. The integral plinth section is designed to accommodate cooling components, power supplies and cables. Forced air cooling can be efficiently managed by the fitting of optional fan carriers complete with filter to prevent dust contamination. CONSTRUCTION Each DIPLOMAT computer tower consists of a front and rear bezel, four depth extrusions, a top panel, plinth section and two removable side covers. Both units are supplied assembled. 19" rack mounting angles are attached to slots in the depth extrusions and may be positioned at any point. These provide a 60mm recess between the side covers and the front of the subracks, in line with IEC 297 rack systems. A fan carrier with a removable filter can be directly mounted into the plinth section. Alternatively, this area can be used to accommodate power supplies, processor boards and cables. A removable gland plate at the rear of the plinth provides access to the fan carrier filters, or mounting for interconnections and power cables. A key lock on each of the two side panels facilitates quick and easy access to the internal components. Optional aluminium front panels provide a choice of a recessed or flush appearance. Computer towers are supplied with four adjustable feet; carpet gliders or castors are available as accessories. DIPLOMAT computer towers are easily customised to suit specific applications. 59 APPLICATIONS The development of modern electronic systems has led to increasing problems with RFI/EMI interference. Most of these problems can be resolved by good EMC design practice at both board and component level. Some systems are, however, unavoidably sensitive or noisy. As a result of this, and new legislation establishing permitted levels of RFI/EMI, enclosures are increasingly being required to provide an effective barrier against this interference. The Veroshield desktop cases provide effective shielding for systems deskmounted in either office or industrial environments. They have an attractive appearance and the careful design of the internal chassis has resulted in a high degree of Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC). The cases are available in three sizes, the heights being equivalent to 1U, 2U and 3U. CUSTOMISED VERSIONS All Veroshield enclosures are designed to be easily customised. Different sizes and variations including cutouts and alternative colours are available. Please contact our Sales office or your local Sales Engineer for details. VENTILATED CASES Veroshield desktop cases are available either with or without ventilation. Ventilated units are supplied with five cutouts, three in the base and two in the rear panel. These cutouts are designed to accept gland plates and a 220v AC fan. Using a mixture of these, spot and convectional cooling may be achieved. On 3U units it is important that all the cutouts are covered by either a ventilated or blank gland plate. This will reduce the degradation of the shield. The shielding effectiveness can be varied from its lowest performance with only ventilated gland plates (max ventilation) to its highest with only blank gland plates (no ventilation). The fan should be fitted with a ventilated gland plate on 3U units or directly to the slot matrix on 1U/2U units, to maintain shielding. 64 19" RACK CASES HOW TO CONFIGURE THE RACK CASE Since it is generally accepted that the case will consist of a top, base, front and rear, the following example illustrates how to select the configuration which best suits you. THE TOP This is available in 3 depths of 250mm, 350mm and 450mm in a ventilated and unventilated version and is simply attached to the case by means of two fastenings at the front. HANDLES These are available in 1U, 2U and 3U versions and can be either black or grey. They attach to the case using 4 fixing screws through the front panel fixing centres. REAR PANELS These are available in RAL 7035 painted steel and are attached to the base by 4 screw fixings. There are 3 height variations of 1U, 2U and 3U and all are removable. GENERAL ASSEMBLY THE BASE This is available in 3 depths of 250mm, 350mm and 450mm and three heights of 1U, 2U and 3U. It is also available in ventilated and unventilated versions. The base also has provision for the attachment of slides. FRONT PANELS These are available in anodised aluminium (black or clear) and are attached to the base by means of 4 screw fixings.
