3 Technical Information GALVANIC CORROSION GALVANIC CORROSION CART Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially to another when both metals are in electrical contact All metals have specific relative electrical potential. When metals of different electrical potential are in contact in the presence of moisture, a low energy electric current flows from the metal having the higher position in the galvanic series. This is called galvanic action. Galvanic corrosion is a form of electrochemical corrosion that occurs when two dissimilar metals come together in the presence of an electrolyte to form an electrical couple, known as a galvanic couple. The more noble or cationic the metal, the less likely it will corrode relative to the other metal it is in contact with. It should be noted that mill scale is cathodic to steel and an electrical current can easily be produced between mill scale and the steel. Weld metal may also be anodic to the base metal, creating a corrosion cell when immersed. Additionally, a depletion of oxygen in crevices of a metal can cause the area to become anodic to the metal outside the crevice which is exposed to oxygen. In building systems, the electrolyte is usually ordinary moisture, whether rainwater or high atmospheric humidity. When two metals form an electrical couple, an exchange of electrons takes place, its direction and intensity governed by each metal s ranking in the galvanic series. The farther apart the two metals are on the galvanic series, the greater the potential for corrosion. Galvanic corrosion potential is a measure of how dissimilar metals will corrode when placed against each other in an assembly. 5 Technical Information AVAILABLE FINSES ALUMINIUM Impres Aluminium 6063 alloys are high extrudability alloys with capability to achieve T6 minimum properties with appropriate extrusion and press quenching conditions. The compositions of Rio Tinto Aluminium 6063 alloys meet both International and Australian Aluminium Council specifications for 6063 alloy. PRE-GALVANISED (G) All Pre-Galvanised Products confirm to the AS/NZ Impres currently uses Z275 Coils to manufacture all Pre Galvanised products. This means that there is 275 grams of Zinc per square meter and the time taken to rust is 50% less than a Z125 OT DIP GALAVISED (DG) All DG products confirm to the AS/NZ 4680 standards. The hot dip galvanising process produces a durable coating of metallic zinc and zinc iron alloys bonded metallurgically to the parent (base) metal. The sacrificial zinc coating ensures that a small area of the base metal exposed through abrasion or impact is protected from corrosion by the surrounding galvanising. During the process the entire surface of the item is coated and may include internal areas difficult to protect by other means. After removal from the bath of molten zinc, the coated steel is usually quenched in water or water containing a small quantity of sodium dichromate. STAINLESS STEEL All stainless steel product range is SS316. SS304 and other grades can be obtained on request SS316 is also known as Marine Grade Stainless Steel contains 2-3% of Molybdenum which improves the corrosion resistance to Chlorides. ZINC The normal zinc-plated coating is dull gray in color with a matte finish, although whiter, more lustrous coatings can be produced, depending on the process or agents added to the plating bath or through post-treatments. The coating is thin, ranging up to 1 mil (25 µm), restricting zinc-plated parts to very mild (indoor) exposures. The coating finds application in screws and other light fasteners, light switchplates and other small parts. Materials for use in moderate or severe applications must be chromate conversion coated. The coating is entirely pure zinc, which has a hardness about one-third to one-half that of most steels. FIBREGLASS Fiberglass (or fibreglass) is a type of fiber reinforced plastic where the reinforcement fiber is specifically glass fiber. The glass fiber may be randomly arranged, flattened into a sheet (called a chopped strand mat), or woven into a fabric. The plastic matrix may be a thermosetting plastic most often epoxy, polyester resin or vinylester, or a thermoplastic. The glass fibers are made of various types of glass depending upon the fiberglass use. These glasses all contain silica or silicate, with varying amounts of oxides of calcium, magnesium, and sometimes boron. To be used in fiberglass, glass fibers have to be made with very low levels of defects. Fiberglass is a strong lightweight material and is used for many products PVC PVC is a thermoplastic made of 57% chlorine (derived from industrial grade salt) and 43% carbon (derived predominantly from oil / gas via ethylene). It is less dependent than other polymers on crude oil or natural gas, which are nonrenewable, and hence can be regarded as a natural resource saving plastic, in contrast to plastics such as PE, PP, PET and PS, which are totally dependent on oil or gas.
