2 CONNECTORS FOR DEMANDING ENVIRONMENTS THREADED AND BAYONET MILITARY AND COMMERCIAL AVIATION This catalog defines rms MIL-DTL-83723, Series III Connectors. There are varieties of connectors within this cylindrical family, with the following options and characteristics available: Two coupling styles: Bayonet and Threaded Plugs and Receptacles. Both coupling styles inter-mate with MIL-DTL connectors (exception: shell size 8 threaded, does not mate with M26500 threaded). Aluminum and passivated stainless steel versions. A variety of mounting configurations. A variety of material finishes are offered such as electroless nickel, olive drab cadmium and black anodizing. Other finishes are available with a commercial equivalent. A double ended plastic tool is used, where one end is for insertion and the other end is for removal of contacts. Alternate key/keyway positions prevent cross mating of adjacent connectors having the same insert arrangement. Positive alignment of pin contacts by the lead in chamfers of the closed entry hard socket inserts. Raised moisture seal barriers around each pin contact that mate with the lead in chamfers of the hard socket insert. The elastomer grommet is able to seal over a wide range of wire diameters and has a triple wire seal in each cavity. The rear release crimped contact system features a stamped retaining clip captivated by molded in shoulders of each contact cavity in the insulator. This produces a very stable contact. 11 General MIL - DTL Performance Characteristics Test Description Test Requirement Test Result Maintenance Aging Contact Retention Dielectric Withstanding Voltage Altitude and Sea level Thermal Shock Random Vibration Shock Connectors, with contacts loaded shall be coupled and uncoupled 10 times. Remove & reinsert 20% of the contacts (min. of 3) 10 times in both connectors halves. Connectors must meet all succeeding tests. Contact when pushed from either axial direction with a specified load (per contact size) will not be displaced more than.012. Mated & unmated connectors at 110,000 feet altitude shall be tested with 200 volts, at 70,000 feet shall be tested with 375 volts and at 50,000 feet shall be tested at 500 volts. Connectors at sea level shall be tested at 1500 volts. There shall be no evidence of breakdown or flashover. The connector shall be subjected to cycles of -65 C to 200 C for specified duration, five times with no damage. Wired and mated connectors shall be mounted in an appropriate fixture on a vibration table. During vibration there shall be no discontinuities of one microsecond or greater with all contacts wired in a series arrangement. Vibration shall be per specification in two perpendicular axes with no discontinuity or damage. 300 g shock wave per specification without sustaining any discontinuity or damage. Durability Connectors shall be mated and un-mated for cycles specified (500 cycles for Bayonet Type, 250 cycles for Threaded Type). No observable damage. Connectors met or exceeded all requirement of succeeding tests. Met the requirement of.012 or less displacement. There was no evidence of breakdown or flashover. After 5 cycles there was no evidence of cracking, fractures or other damage detrimental to connector operation. There was no discontinuity or evidence of damage. Met requirement of no discontinuity or damage. Met requirements of no damage to connector after mating 250 cycles for t h r e a d e d a n d f o r b a y o n e t. Salt Spray Ozone Insulation Resistance (Ambient & Elevated temp) Altitude Immersion Temperature Life with Contact Loading No sign of any corrosion when sample is tested in the Salt Spray for the specified time. Mated connectors shall have two hours of exposures at ambient (23 C) temperature with Ozone levels of 100 ppm to 150 ppm. When measured between three adjacent contacts (min.) and three contacts closest to shell and the shell itself, the insulation resistance shall be 5000 megohms between adjacent contacts and the shell and 200 megohms when tested at 200 C. Mated connectors shall be submersed in salt water & cycled per specification. They must then pass the IR & DWV test requirement after the 1st and 3rd cycle hours at 200 degrees C with one contact of both samples (mated pair) having a load of 10 lbs applied. Contact retention shall be measured before and after of each sample pair. Mated contact shall be monitored for discontinuities during the test period. Moisture Resistance Subject to 10 cycles of high humidity per specification with last 5 cycles incorporating Hot & Cold. Met requirement of no base metal exposed. No damage occurred to the connector or dielectric material. Insulation Resistance exceeded 5000 megohms at ambient and 200 megohms at elevated temperature. Met requirements for IR and DWV as specified in the test sequence. Met requirements of contact retention/displacement after test with no discontinuities. Apply a 3 pound pull to contact with a 360 degree fixture per specification for 100 cycles. Contact shall not move out of position. Subject contacts to the specified pressure, rotation & cycles of the insertion and removal tools. Place a side load on the end of the test pin per specification to determine displacement of mating end. Unmated connectors without contacts shall be immersed in fluids & then drained per specification followed by subjecting the connectors to the contact retention test. With the receptacle mounted on a panel, the connector accessory end of the mating Plug connector shall be weighted down per specification. Connector pair mounted as above. Apply the torque to the accessory thread as specified for the plug and receptacle. Salt water solution shall be placed in the mating interface of the pin connector mating area and the voltage applied per specification. RFI grounding spring shall be measured for mating force per specification & shell-to-shell conductivity shall be tested on shells (except Class A). Met requirements of torque and DWV with no damage to mating face or other surfaces. Met requirements of flame test and electrical function. No leakage detected between cavities Contact met requirement of not becoming dislodged from the connector contact cavity. No damage detected with the contact, connector insert or contact retaining mechanism. Met requirements of contact displacement. Met requirement of contact retention test. No damage detected to accessory end. No damage to connector mating or accessory threads. No damage to connector mating face. 34 R0709 Series Flange Mount or Single Hole Mount Receptacles The R0709 Series connectors are designed for termination to printed circuit boards, flex circuitry, or may be furnished with solder pin, wire wrap, compliant contact or solder pot contacts. The gold plated contacts are designed for ease of maintenance with insertion and removal accomplished through the front side of the connector eliminating the requirement to disassemble the entire connector from its mounting. The mating interface is compatible with MIL-DTL and MIL-DTL-83723/75, /76, /77, and /78 Type B Connectors.
