CLOISONNÉ CALENDAR Volume 61 No. 18 Fall 2017 Minnesota Packards and Hawkeye Packards Joint Meet 2017 We were favored with cool weather in August and many decided to drive prewar cars for this event. Our Twin City members met at McDonald s in Jordan to drive as a group to Algona, Iowa. The drive there went smoothly. We met the Hawkeye folks at the Chrome in Algona, and enjoyed lunch and conversation. Leaving there, the group headed to the POW museum in Algona. German POWs were held in Iowa during WW2 and this was one place that had an internment camp. The various displays detailed what life was like during this period. The second stop of the day was the Grotto of the Redemption. It seems this is not quite what the name implies but is a manmade monument to faith. The construction is quite interesting as the surface is made from natural materials that are all crystalline in nature. After a walk around this site, we took the drive over to Spencer and checked in at our hotel. After a short rest, we met for dinner at the Prime Rib. The meal was great and everyone enjoyed a chance to visit with friends and talk cars. (continued on page 2)

(Joint Meet 2017) (continued from page 1) After dinner, it was back to our lodgings and conversation for some of the guys in the parking lot. Saturday dawned with clear weather. After some breakfast at the hotel, it was on to the day s activities. First up was a visit to Toby Shine s Car Museum. Mr. Shine has created a bit of the past with a space that remembers Spencer s past with a diorama of the town s most memorable areas full scale. To do this, he employs an artist to paint various interior spaces in the building as he remembered it when he was young. First was the center of town as it looked around The building interiors are rendered in great detail and after entering the space the area behind the visitor depicts the view one would have seen at the time. Many of the cars are for sale and there is an onsite salesman to negotiate with. 2 (continued on page 3)

(Joint Meet 2017) (continued from page 2) The next room presents a drive-in food vendor. There is then a diorama of a drive-in movie theater with many cars painted on the walls and America Graffiti showing on the screen. The room is illuminated at low light so the atmosphere and appearance is much like a memory of such a place would be. The moon is illuminated with a spot light giving a very natural appearance and the artist who painted it all described for us the details of his creation. Low light makes for difficult photos but I didn t want to ruin the experience. Then there was a large gallery area that was used to host events with some vintage vehicles parked before recreated shops and the recreation of a local bar. (continued on page 4) 3

(Joint Meet 2017) (continued from page 3) The facility has a full scale restoration shop and for those that were interested, we had a look at these areas. Like the rest of this place, It was large and impressive. Perhaps most impressive was the quality of restoration done on this 57 Cadillac, as nice on top as underneath. Moving on from Mr. Shine s place, we drove to Okoboji and the Higgins Museum of National Bank Notes. This museum documents the history of money in the US and has many early bank notes. 4 (continued on page 5)

(Joint Meet 2017) (continued from page 4) We went to Lunch at Minerva s and then on to the Maritime Museum. It seems the Great Lakes of Iowa spanned a local boating history detailed at the museum going back to the 19th century. Many interesting artifacts were on display including a Chris Craft that sank in a collision, laid on the bottom for 50 years, and was later raised and put on display. Then we headed to the lake itself for a ride on the Queen 2. Here Peter Hemkin led us aboard Queen 2. Everyone seemed to enjoy the peaceful ride and hearing about the history of the lake and people who lived here. Following the boat ride, we enjoyed dinner at the Water Front Restaurant. This gave us another chance to talk and enjoy each other s company. Thanks again to Peter Hemkin and Glenn Kohout for arranging this fine weekend of Packarding. 5

Minnesota Packards Club Director Change Mike Dulinski will be stepping down as our director. Mike s business and personal situation has made it difficult to find the time to devote to car clubbing, and so we have someone whom many of you know that is willing to take on the tasks involved. Mike took the helm when the tenure of some of our previous offices ended, and we thank him for his help and hope he can join us at future events as time allows. Thanks, Mike, for your service to Packard Owners with parts sales, and your participation in this club. Tom Brace has agreed to help us run the club. Tom has an extensive background in the car hobby, and liaison with other clubs in our area that will help us plan and execute better events in the future. I asked Tom give us some background as some of us may know him better than others so here is his resume: I have two passions that I will publically admit to, The Fire Service and old cars. When I speak of old cars, I generally mean cars of the 1930 s and Packards and Lincolns. In 1978, I was ordered to find a hobby by my boss at the time. I came up with two ideas. One was the purchase of a BMW Motorcycle and the other was to restore an old car. I chose to restore an old car, and it was going to be a Packard because I was impressed with a straight eight engine that was running on only 7 of 8 cylinders in a 1950 Packard. I could not detect this fact. My first car was a 1942 Clipper that had a 1948 engine in it. It needed everything and it was a junior series. I then found a 1938 Model 1603 Super Eight Touring sedan and did a ground up restoration on it. After I had finished this car and had toured with it, I traded it for a 1938 Model 1607 V-12 Club Sedan. We then did a complete mechanical rebuild on it and used it in our wedding. In 1991, we sold the car and then repurchased it 25 years later (but I am getting ahead of my story). I found a 1956 Packard Patrician in Amboy, MN, with factory air and 34,000 miles. Once again, a complete mechanical rebuild and many Packard Nationals. There is something about a big American V-8 and this one had 374 cubic inches with a 4 barrel carb. A Passenger Custom Super Clipper was found in Wyoming and a complete restoration was done. I sold it to a friend, reluctantly, but he really wanted it and he had a story that I could not resist. It was a grand tourer with an overdrive and all of the room you could want with your 6 closest friends. A 1929 Model 633 Club Sedan was purchased and a complete restoration was completed. It had wire wheels and at every national meet someone wanted to buy them. I put a high speed rear end in it but it never was the tour car some of the other Packards were. Two 1937 Lincoln K s were purchased and restored, but that is the subject of another story. One was a 2-window sedan and the other was a LeBaron Coupe. In 2016, we had the opportunity to re-purchase our 1938 Packard V-12 Club Sedan. Our first date was in this car and we used it in our wedding. My wife, Gunta, loved this car and wanted to buy it back which we did. I feel that we have come full circle in terms of car ownership and Packard Automobile Classics. For many years, I was on the National Board and then was elected to the Classic Car Club National Board and served for nine years. I was recently re-elected to the National Board of PAC. I have been a member of Minnesota Packards since It is a wonderful club and it has a future with both existing and new members. We come for the cars and we stay for the people. I have never been the Director of Minnesota Packards and I look forward to helping rebuild our wonderful club. 7

Minnesota Packards 2018 Events If you have ideas on what events you would like to see in 2018, please shoot us an at minnpackards@ gmail.com, or call me at and pass these along. We are interested in ideas where great touring and interesting collections, museums, or other interesting history would make a great driving event. Welcome New Members We have been recruiting some new folks who were members at the national level but not in the Minnesota Club. We welcome all those with an interest for Packards, touring, and just meeting like-minded enthusiasts with or without a Packard to join us. If you aware of someone who may fit the bill, let me know and I can send details on the club to let them know we are here and would like to get to know them. 9 Minnesota Packard s Boat Tour At Tom Brace s suggestion, after speaking with Mike Kutter at the 2016 National, I called in the spring and suggested to Mike we might do an event in the Alexandria area some time in He and his wife were willing to host so I gave some thought to what would be interesting. The area has an Antique Wooden Boat Show and it seemed natural to combine vintage cars and boats, so we planned a tour with Mike s help. June 7th Mother Nature favored us with a great day for touring. John and Donna Ward, Tom and Gunta Brace, and myself met in Plymouth to begin our adventure. As the humidity was low and the sun was shining, we started northwest on Highway 55. Mike and Janine met us in his 38 Super in Eden Valley and led us north through lakes and rolling countryside to Grey Eagle. This is a lovey small town. We had lunch at the Double R in town and went to Mike s place afterward to view his home and collection. Mike s man cave is impressive. It is built in a barn. The front is set up as a party room with a full bar, pool table and music. At the far end is Mike s Car Shop, fully equipped with lift and a nice place to turn a wrench. Janine described some of the memorabilia in the garage and we four fellows posed for a quick photo. (continued on page 10) 9

MINNESOTA PACKARD S BOAT TOUR CONTINUED Mike s collection included a couple Packards and Caddys, some of which were outside for easy viewing. He also had a barn for storage of future projects. After a look around and conversation, we headed for Alexandria so we could check in at the hotel. Everyone went to the Tennessee Road House for dinner. June 8th The day looked great with sunny skies. Mike met us at the hotel and I called the event coordinator at Arrowwood to say we were on our way. They helpfully guided us to the display area and parked us next to the docks. Also on display were hand built aluminum replicas of German Sports Cars from the 50 s. I met the builder, Chris Runge, and he described some of his processes to create these scratch built sports cars. Super cool! 10 (continued on page 11)

MINNESOTA PACKARD S BOAT TOUR CONTINUED We next had a look at the various wood boats on display, built largely before the 1950 s. These had been restored to a high standard and were beautiful. Tom and John looked over the fleet. After lunch at Arrowwood, we went on to view a collection owned by Larry Anderson. Larry s passion is old Chevys and his were restored to very high standards. Tom and Gunta give me a pose at Larry s garage. Larry was kind enough to offer wine to those who would like to sample his vintage. Larry descibed each of his cars in detail and described his facility as well. Our final stop of the day was the Marine Museum in Alexandria. The extensive nature of the collection here was impressive. There was an art display and history of boats built in this part of the state. (continued on page 12) 11

MINNESOTA PACKARD S BOAT TOUR CONTINUED Some rather large boats were on display along with many history displays and vintage out boards. Mike and Janine had to take their friends home so we bid them goodbye, and said we hoped to see them at Okoboji. Tom selected a great Italian restaurant and we had some dinner. Sunday dawned cool with light rain. It was a great fun weekend with good friends, good fun and great memories. 12 Minnesota Packards, Inc., a region of the Packard Automobile Club (PAC), is a not-forprofit corporation dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of Packard automobiles and related memorabilia.
