1 CLOISONNÉ CALENDAR Volume 61 No. 15 Fall 2016 Rochester Joint Meet John Ward and I met in Cannon Falls and drove to Rochester for the Packard Club Joint Fall Meet. Tom Brace did a great job of getting facilities and events arranged in advance. We were blessed with a great fall weekend for weather and the participation was great, more pre-war cars were to be seen than any local Packard Club event I can recall. We began at the Kahler Apache Parking Lot which contained some impressive vehicles. This is Gene Grengs 24 Packard Sport Touring, Rick Hickmans Town Car, and Floyd and Marie Burtons 51 Patrician. Tom described our activites for the afternoon and we traveled to our first destination. Fred Trachsel, our host had some impressive cars on display. He also invited some local Packard owners over to see the cars. Fred started and runs a dental lab and has been in that business for many years. It s a family operation and his grandson gave us a short presentaion on what they do there. This is Fred s 31 Pierce Arrow which was originally displayed at the New York Auto Show at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Here John Ward looks over some of the details on the Pierce Arrow and Fred describes his car in detail. 2 (Rochester Joint Meet) (continued from page 1) Our friends from Iowa and Nebraska enjoyed the get together, the weather and the cars Our next stop was Don Hanson s garage. After a short drive, we had a look at the 47 Cadillac Don is currently restoring and his 24 Packard Town Car. Don has shown this at a number of events and it represents years of effort to make it the beautiful car it is today. We parked at Don s place and he described the process of bringing the 24 back to life It s a beauty now, and even features needle point in the rear seating area, terrific detail in every aspect Following our visit to Don s, we returned to the hotel and enjoyed dinner and conversation with old and new friends. The food and service at the hotel was great, as was the company. (continued on page 6) 2

The menu for the event will be a choice of: Fettuccine Alfredo: Fettuccine noodles in a butter cream sauce with shredded Romano cheese. Spaghetti with Rich Meat Sauce: From scratch recipe of ripe tomatoes and ground beef, sauteed with freshly chopped onions, celery and garlic, simmered to perfection with savory Italian herbs and spices. Chicken Marsala: Freshly seasoned breast of tender all-natural chicken with a mushroom and marsala wine sauce. Served alongside spaghetti with Mizithra cheese and browned butter. Also salad with pesto dressing, and vanilla ice cream will be served. Coffee, milk, etc. are available separately. With tax and tip, it will be $19/person. 4 As many of you know Mike Dulinski, our Director, has a 55 Packard 400 with a Chrysler Drive train. He calls it the Pacsler. He recently got involved in movie prop rental for an independent film maker as he explains below: The PACSLER in a Movie by Michael Dulinski A customer of mine helps the film industry with their resource needs in my area. She was asked to find a special car for a film being made from Grand Marais to Duluth and suggested my 1955 Packard. The producer contacted me to look at the car and thought it was exactly what he needed. He required two other vehicles, an older nice pickup and a beater 90 s small car. I volunteered my restored 1973 Ford pickup and my friend s 1991 Honda Accord. All were perfect for their needs. It sounded interesting and not knowing how much time this was going to take, I agreed to supply the vehicles. The plot of the story concerning the cars has the main character Virginia driving the beater Honda. She is going to inherit the Packard. Her friend drives the Ford pickup. Filming started in Two Harbors with the Honda at Agate Beech for three days and the Packard filmed at the same location. The Glensheen Mansion was the second primary location used for 10 days. I had to bring the Honda and Packard there. I put the Honda on a trailer and towed it with the Packard. The pickup was also filmed there. Later, a camera crew was loaded in the back seat of the Packard and the actresses were filmed driving the car in traffic for a half an hour. The story originates in Grand Marais which meant I had to bring the Packard and Honda there, also. I again towed the Honda with the Packard 120 miles to the location. It rained the day scheduled for outside filming so I had to be a tourist for a day. Welcome to the filming industry! During the day I parked the Packard at the marina. There was a painting contest in town with painters doing scenes of nature and an artist set up by the Packard to do a painting of it with Lake Superior in the background. Filming included a scene showing a renaissance festival and they dressed me up in a king outfit as an extra standing next to one of the characters. Filming in Silver Bay was done with the pickup and drone shots were done north of Two Harbors using the Packard. After 70 hours of being with the film crew (most time spent standing around) and 1100 miles of transporting vehicles, I learned much about the film industry. During filming, I drove all 3 vehicles at various times on camera and will have my name in the credits. I did get paid some for my time but not as much as one might think, although being with a movie crew is something people seldom experience. The main character in the film is named Virginia and the name of the movie is Virginia, Minnesota. It should be done in a year. Hopefully it will be seen by many. Mike recently bought his 125th Packard as a part of a large parts acquisition. Congrats Mike! 4

It describes the elements that make up the marque symbol which we are all familiar with. Dave is entering nursing care and as a tribute to a Packard fan, we are republishing his article. The Packard Crest by Dave Schmit In the world of automobiles, most have a symbol or emblem such as a crest, shield or coat-of-arms. In some cases such as Packard, Dodge, Durant, and Kaiser, this symbol or trademark was based on the ancient family coat of arms. Have you ever looked at the family crest closely to see what is included and wondered what the symbols mean? One of my special interests has long been the study of symbols, trademarks, and heraldry, (coats-of-arms) and I have researched the Packard coat-of-arms. The Packard Company, in memory of the firm s founder adopted the family coat-of-arms for its cars. The coat-ofarms was placed on the radiator in memory of James and William Packard who founded the company and built the first Packard car by hand. The Packard Crest first appeared on the 6th series cars on the radiator shell and later on dashboards, grilles, steering wheels, luggage racks and on the side of body panels. The Packard Coat-of-Arms originated in the middle ages. It came to America with Samuel Packard who came from Windham England in 1638 on a ship called Diligent. In the language of ancient heraldry, the coat-of-arms was described as follows: Gules across lozenge between four Roses Agent and a showing a Pelican in her piety. In modern language this translates to mean A shield of crimson, a cross of diamonds between four silver white roses. The crest is a Pelican pricking blood from her breast to feed a brood of chicks. The Crest Mantling Helmet Shield Roses at the corners Cross at the center The pelican is an ancient symbol of unselfishness depicting tenderness to others. Drawing blood from the breast to feed chicks is called Vulning and thus she is in her Piety. This symbol adorns many temples and altars. Its presence denotes that the original bearer of the coat-of-arms made some great sacrifice. The roses on the shield signify hope and joy. The cross, of which there are more than 250 forms in heraldry, is a symbol of the Christian church and denotes the Crusader ancestry of the original grantee. Diamonds, which form the cross, symbolize wisdom, constancy, and equity, or square dealings. A coat of arms is not considered complete without mantling, helmet and scroll. The mantling represents the scarf or cloak thrown over the helmet of a knight to protect the warrior from the elements. The description of the Packard Coat-of-Arms is recorded in various heraldic registries. The Packard Company took the liberty of replacing the silver in the arms with gold, perhaps to create greater contrast with the cars chrome. The Packard crest has become sought after by emblem collectors. The dies were destroyed for scrap during WWII, and it has become difficult to find replacements as a result. The process of making or restoring these is similar to making jewelry. The crests were plated in heavy gold with red and black cloisonné which is a fine enamel of glass. 5

6 (A Trip to the Packard National) (continued from page 2) Saturday morning was another great day weather-wise. The group met at 9:00 o clock and began a tour to Winona. The drive down highway 14 was good and the area near the river was especially nice. Our first stop was at JR Watkins. We had a short presentation about the company and had a chance to buy a few of the products they produce. Following that, we toured the Minnesota Maritime Museum at a lovely location along the river. It has some spectacular art related to history, sailing, and shipping. For the drive back, Tom chose some scenic Minnesota county highways. Before we left Rochester, the group gathered for dinner at the hotel for a last chance to visit with the car guys/gals and enjoy some delicious food. As the driving year comes to a close, I want to thank Tom Brace for all of his efforts to make this a successful and memorable event in a beautiful setting.
