1 CLOISONNÉ CALENDAR Volume 61 No. 13 Summer Classic Car Garage Tour The Classic Car Club once again invited the Packard club along for the Spring Garage Tour. It s always an interesting event and a chance to see what some other collector car enthusiasts like, and stuff they find interesting. It is always a fun way to begin the driving season. We began the day at Roger Worth s garage with nice weather and a good crowd turn-out. There were some interesting cars, including a classic Lincoln to see. Next, we hit the road for a pleasant drive down Minnehaha Parkway for a stop at John Kinkead s Garage in St Paul. John had several Pre-War cars including a Cadillac V16 model and a Rolls Royce. That is quite the engine. It s a shame they don t make them as attractive these days. We moved on to Kevin Kinney and Kris Syrdal s Buick collection on the east side of St Paul. In spite of the misfortune of a garage collapse, they still had an extensive collection of Buicks to see. The garage is rebuilt as seen below left. Next we traveled to Dick Pellow s collection (above right and below). This was probably my highlight of the day, as Dick has everything from Brass Era cars to Hot Rods and everything in between including a 1928 Packard. Pictured below is a Hudson Terraplane and Dick s restoration area nice area and plenty of projects in process. (continued on page 8)

September Des Moines Concours d Elegance To start off the Concours, Dick and Connie Roth will AGAIN (thanks!) be hosting a potluck barbeque get together on Friday, September 11, for all Packard Club members (Hawkeye Packards and also other PAC Regions) who may be in town for the weekend. Please RSVP to Dick and Connie if you plan to be with them for supper on Fri, Call: or boysmom6@gmail.com The Des Moines Concours d Elegance to be held Sunday, September 13, is the 16th annual exhibition of fine antique, classic and collectible motor vehicles and the 2nd to be presented in its new downtown location. The Concours celebrates the fine art, design evolution, and amazing innovations of motor vehicles through the years, as well as the talented designers and engineers that created them. The Concours takes place in downtown Des Moines on closed streets surrounding the internationally recognized John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park. The Heartlands Driving Tour will be Saturday, September 12, and travel by paved roads through the Iowa countryside to Newton to visit the Maytag Dairy Farms, home of the famous Maytag Blue Cheese, and the Iowa Speedway, a 7/8ths mile oval and 1.3 mile road course designed by NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace. The tour will continue on to the charismatic Dutch community of Pella for lunch and sightseeing opportunities before returning to Des Moines via Lake Red Rock. The tour will cover a distance of less than 120 miles and return by mid-afternoon. September Des Moines area. Russ & Marj Bees will be our hosts for this JOINT MEET with the Minn Packard Club. Also invited will be the regional Cadillac La Salle Club. Following this tour, is a visit to the Garden Barn in Indianola. After lunch, we head to historic Valley Junction in West Des Moines to shop. Mid afternoon brings a tour of the Karl Performance Center a full service speed shop for car restorations more information on the Performance Center can be seen at htm. Russ has sent me a detailed composite of all of the fun stuff planned for this meet, and I will include such in the August Hawkeye NL. 4 The 10,000 Lakes Concours Event It s early June and the time for the 10,000 Lakes event rolls here in Minnesota. It is in its 3rd year and is becoming a tradition in the Northland. Randy Guyer and his team did another fine job and staged an excellent event. On Saturday, the participants met at the Jaguar dealer in Golden Valley and showed the cars they were bringing for the Sunday event. They then cruised with Randy leading the way to the Automotorplex in Chanhassen for lunch. A wide variety of cars and folks participated in this event. While I was at Automotorplex, I know Batman and the Green Hornet were nearby, as I saw their cars parked there! Following the cruise there was a party/silent auction/fund raiser for the ICA food shelf at the Jaguar dealer which was a big success and enjoyed by all present. Sunday dawned with all the rain having moved through overnight. I got to the field early and parked near the lake. This event appeals to a wide variety of car enthusiasts. There were around 140 cars on the field from early brass cars like Mark and Gloria Deshes 1905 Stevens Duyrea to Russ Bees 1953 Jaguar fixed head coupe. 4

5 (2015 Classic Car Garage Tour) (continued from page 4) The show was terrific all around and didn t disappoint when it came to Packards! Below is a 32 Dietrich bodied 12 cylinder dual cowl Sport Phaeton. Restored by RM it seemed perfect in every detail, what a beauty! The details on this car were amazing, the wind wings were strut mounted to the door in such a way as to move to one side so the rear seat occupants can more easily enter the vechicle and sit down easily this was really well thought out. Winson Peterson showed his limo and Webster Peterson and Kari Albers were showing his newly acquired convertible sedan. 5

6 (2015 Classic Car Garage Tour) (continued from page 5) Scott and Jeanette Simdorn showed their 37 Packard 1507 V12 body by Dietrich convertible as well. The Packard brand was well represented and awarded! This is Ray Kroll s 34 club sedan and a lovely sedan. If you love Packards, this is an event to add to the Bucket List at some point. The tickets benefit the local food shelf and if you show a car it costs nothing. If you couldn t make it this time, add it to your to do list for next year. 6

7 100 Years Ago in Packard History In looking at the internet the other day, I found for me what is a new resource on old car history and one many may not be aware of. Google, in partnership with the University of Michigan Library, has placed copies of one of the earliest car publications on line making it possible to see and download copies of these publications to research for contemporary details on the Packards as seen back when they were new. In viewing this resource, I came across the publication called Motor Age. For those who have never heard of it, it was a weekly publication of everything automotive when all the technology was new and still evolving. It covered new cars, motor sport, accessories, names of those who had started dealerships, and most any auto related topic - around 100 pages of weekly. This has been organized so it s searchable as a.pdf using adobe reader so it s easy to find information. So, 100 years ago what was Packard up to? In May of 1915, Packard announced one of its most famous creations, technologically going where no one had gone before, with the creation of the first 12 cylinder engine for a production car. As a car guy, the details of this are a fascinating story. The article doesn t talk down to the reader and gives the specs and details of this engine, very specifically. Apparently, Packard wasn t too concerned about copyists as a very high level of specification and detail is presented. The article describes the engine as: Packards s bold announcement is the first of its kind made in the world and it marks a decided step towards America s supremacy in the field of motor car engineering. Packard also moved from a transaxle design in earlier cars, to the setup typically used today with the transmission behind the engine. If you enjoy digging through the details, Google allows a look back to when automotive tech was as new as computer tech is today. If you enjoy reading about the history as seen back in the day, search Google books for Motor Age, an incredible window on our past. 7

8 (2015 Classic Car Garage Tour) (continued from page 1) Next, we had lunch with club friends which is always great, and then on to a collection that reminded me of mechanical old days. The Laumeyer Brothers have saved the old days and created an atmosphere that was unlike anything I ve seen before. Barns full of Sleeping Beauties waiting for the restorer s hand to live again, plus everything from Motorcycles to Firetrucks and Fighter Plane engines and, of course, cars! Among the items here was an Allison V12 from a P40, many cars and even some beer, a car full of it! We moved on to the north side of town and for a stop at Dave Harris s garage. Dave has several nicely resotored vintage autos that include a Rolls Royce. Here John Ward checks out the hardware and Jane Caldwell and Elayne Wiskow have a chance to visit. (continued on page 9) 8

9 (2015 Classic Car Garage Tour) (continued from page 8) We moved on down the street to Odyssey Restorations to have a look at the cars to be restored and some finished cars as well. Tom Rasmussen always has some interesting restorations in process and this trip was no exception. There seems to always be a few Franklins around this shop and this was true again this day. This beauty from the 30 s was waiting a top. The quality of the work done by Tom and his crew never fails to be less than very impressive Our member, Mark Desch, has given Tom something to keep him busy - one of the other 3 Ps, a Peerless that needs a lot of help, but will be great again I m sure. A fun day, thanks to our friends in UMRCCCA for the invitation and a well planned event as always! 9
