1 Recycling has been around for centuries, but it really began to gain popularity in the 1970s, after global oil shortages left parts of the world without gasoline. It was at that time that people started to realize that we didn t have an endless supply of vital natural resources. To help protect the environment and to take more responsibility for the future, people seriously got into recycling things like paper, bottles, cans, and plastic. But the recycling movement really started taking off after the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd, The organizers of the event designated it as a national day for the environment and a day to think about our environment and take the necessary steps to preserve a healthy earth. Since then, countries all over the world have been celebrating Earth Day and adhering to the idea of recycling. Recycling has, in fact, become an essential part of daily life for most people living in most parts of the world. In my city, recycling is done once every two weeks, usually on a weekend. I fully support this and always try to keep the glass, cans, and plastic that I dispose separate by placing them in the proper bins. We are all helping to save the environment when we recycle. It takes massive amounts of space to bury trash in the ground in landfills, and burning

2 trash is not much better for all kinds of reasons. So, what can we do as individuals to really make a difference? Recycling is our best, and possibly our only, answer. There is, however, one part of recycling that I despise: the collection of paper and cardboard products carried out by third-party people* every Saturday and Sunday morning. As I mentioned, I fully support the recycling movement. But I think that these collectors driving around town at 8:30 in the morning on a weekend with a megaphone blaring* is totally rude and inconsiderate. Of course, I appreciate someone coming around and collecting my old newspapers, but asking for people s recycling so early on a Saturday or Sunday is discourteous*. And it disrupts my much-needed catch-up sleep.
