1 The following were concerns, questions, and possible solutions written down by young riders at the Youth Transit Town Hall at Howard University on Monday, July 30th, based on group discussions: A. Fares for youth a. Concerns: i. Summer cut-offs ii. No $30 monthly pass for whole school year. iii. Surcharge on farecards. iv. Accessibility to farecards at every station. v. Program for student SmarTrips. vi. Willing to give money on farecards less than $5. vii. Student card throughout whole metro instead of DC only. viii. Lines at Metro for student passes. ix. Lower cost bus wise. x. Bringing back paper transfers. xi. No notice of increased fare. xii. Year-round DC One pass. xiii. Flat rate throughout day. xiv. Fare options for tardy buses. i. Individual roles: 1. Contact the mayor. 2. Lobby 3. Petition Metro. 4. Letters to Metro Board. 5. Protest 6. Join Metro Youth Advisory Council B. Upkeep of trains/system a. Add trash cans inside train cars b. Pick specific times to fix trains i. Fix trains/clean trains from 2am-5am c. Fix seats, not just some lines (off-times) d. Monthly technology check-ups (trains & escalators & farecard machines) e. Hire janitors for daily cleanup, inside & out. f. Metro cats! g. Smell of trains h. Clean stations i. Non-allergenic air freshener j. LED lighting

2 C. Train/bus capacity i. Too many people more cars, more 8 car trains ii. Over-crowded; fights (pushing, shoving); car limits capacity, more frequency iii. More enforcement of the seats (elders) iv. More people = more theft v. More space, ex. Circulator, 70 vi. More organized Ex. access, events vii. More courtesy. viii. More buses/trains during rush hour i. Expansion w/purple line D. Operation hours a. Proposal: 24 hours, all lines. b. Reasons: We do not want to get stranded. i. People get off late during the week. c. Increase hourly service. i. Many people believe that the time increments are spaced out too far.

4 F. Bus stops i. Not enough bus stops in Laurel ii. Update bus schedules iii. More bus stops in general iv. Too many bus stops (Gallery) v. Buses need to run every 10 minutes. vi. More shade at bus stops. vii. More seats at bus stops. viii. Buses pass bus stops without stopping. ix. Bus drivers are rude. x. 70s buses are overcrowded. xi. Don t let old heads get on w/o paying. xii. Too much $ fare. i. Build a bus transit area (depo) (Gallery) ii. Clearly identify bus stops. iii. Metro update schedules each year. iv. More trees/buildings. G. Bus operation/performance a. Virginia/Maryland buses run too slow/stop too early. b. Bells don t always ring. c. You have to yell back door for the back door to open d. Rude drivers e. Enforce rules f. Add more buses to busy routes g. 24 (hour?) buses; major routes h. Transfers i. Money machines acting up j. Tourists pass k. Student pass for college students/md, VA residents l. Announcements/GPS m. Bad weather n. More long buses o. Dirty/stinky p. Wrong turns q. Off-schedule r. Drivers ride past stop s. 5 H. SmarTrip cards i. Student Smartpass boundaries ii. Why have to buy them at schools? iii. Why did they change from Smartpasses to DC One cards??? iv. Why don t they sell SmarTrips in all Metro stations? v. Constant price raise for Smartpasses/DC One activation to 27 to 30 vi. Bring transfers back i. Find new ways to raise revenue without increasing prices. ii. Youth SmarTrip cards for all youth that are accessible to Metro iii. Decrease prices iv. WMATA Jr. (youth council board) 1. Give us a voice! I. Bus schedules i. Buses move slower. ii. More buses not just express. iii. Buses skip bus stops. iv. App for the bus stop doesn t tell correct time. v. Update all the old schedules at bus stops. vi. Make the schedule box clear and keep updated. i. Bus driver stops at every stop. ii. Extend the length of buses. iii. Use the online customer form. iv. Buses come frequently at the bus stop at the more popular places. c. Roles: i. Protest (don t ride) ii. Grace period (give people time) iii. Plan (get to bus stop earlier than expected bus)

6 J. Environmentally-friendly practices a. Exchange paper farecards for reusable plastic tokens. i. Cost-efficient b. Use eco-friendly fuels for Metro and buses. i. Sustainable c. Recycling bins on trains. d. Hybrid buses = less cost all e. Solar power lighting f. More grass around train stations g. Move to all-electric vehicles h. Environmental program Metro Lead K. Customer service i. Rude ii. Bathrooms in all stations iii. Not knowledgable iv. Allowing water at all times on services, not just during the heat. i. Letter of complaint/slip allowing water ii. Invest in out-of-work companies (construction) iii. Customer service booth at all stations. 1. And proper training c. Our input i. Go to ANC meetings, hearing, Metro meetings. ii. Be provided w/complaint to fill-out. iii. Form Youth Metro Council, go to schools.
