John has been a collector and restorer of Ford autos for several years. I was fortunate to have a look at these cars and his current project. As can be seen below, John has an impressive collection of early Fords and has enjoyed some success at a number of car shows with those vehicles. Recently he took on a project that would interest any Packard guy. John was at the Pomona Swap Meet which is a large car meet in LA and came across a family looking to sell a relative s 1928 Packard Roadster. John is currently in the process of working to restore that car which requires some extensive rework of the body. The car was restored some years ago but the wood in the body was not done properly and is being redone. When I met John last fall, he had gutted the interior and was looking for cars of similar vintage and construction to develop a plan to have the wood recreated so it could be replaced. The plan was to look at the dimensions of wood on a similar car and have a carpenter recreate the correct wood components. John plans on repainting the car when the wood work is complete. The engine is a bit of a mystery, as it was supposedly in working order and seems to have good compression but may be in need of some love as well. The Minnesota Packards Website I ve recently been working to update the Minnesota Packards Website with the folks at Hemmings that host the site for us. Changes include adding updated photos and web page backgrounds. I updated the links to other helpful pages, and added links to local shows as well. I have also added a videos page that contains interesting videos of Packard events and history of the brand. Last year s newsletters are also on the site so people can get a sense of the clubs activities. As we live in an era when instant communication has become the norm we may want to use this as a way to distribute event update information when that s needed. I have the 2017 events list posted. Check out the site when you have some time. I would be interested in your ideas to make a useful tool for members and a way to let the world know we are around. 2

The original interior was removed while work was done and should be reusable as is. Pictures illustrate the work under way, the car has been reassembled. The metal work was professionally restored to meticulous perfection by Cass Nawrochi of Moose Lake MN, author of Any Impossibility in Metal. The car needs paint and assembly (which leaves it open for you to choose the finish color). There are extensive receipts documenting years of work and the many dollars spent to bring this car back. 5 Minnesota Packards 2017 Events For information on Minnesota Packard Club events, contact Bill Heptig by telephone at Events for 2017: - CLASSIC CAR CLUB GARAGE TOUR - APRIL 29 The Packard Club will accompany the Classic Car (UMRCCCA) folks on their Spring garage tour ( always an interesting look at local car collections not seen by the public). Event will leave Stillwater, Minnesota from 333 North Main Street promptly at 8:30am. Plan to be there at 7:30. We will be viewing collections in Western Wisconsin, including Gene Grengs collection which is one of the best in the upper Midwest and not to be missed. - THE BUICK CLUB HOSTS OLD CARS AT THE FAIRGROUNDS - SUNDAY MAY 7TH The Gopher State Buick Club has its annual car show and swap meet at the Minnesota State Fair ground. 100 Years ago in Packard History: Jesse Vincent and the Liberty Engine help Win WW1 Born in Charleston, Arkansas on February 10, 1880, Vincent came from a promising lineage for his chosen career.

Vincent studied engineering in his spare time from a course offered by International Correspondence Schools.

1910. Jesse Vincent was a very close friend of Hudson s Howard E. Coffin. He joined Packard on July 29, 1912, and began his rise there. World War I briefly affected-but did not interrupt-his career.

6 100 Years ago in Packard History: Jesse Vincent and the Liberty Engine help Win WW1 Born in Charleston, Arkansas on February 10, 1880, Vincent came from a promising lineage for his chosen career. His maternal grandfather had been the Union Army s Director of Railroad Design and Engineering for its rail network during the Civil War. This was pivotal in the Confederacy s inevitable defeat. Vincent studied engineering in his spare time from a course offered by International Correspondence Schools. He established himself with a thick portfolio of patents at the Burroughs Adding Machine Company in Detroit before moving on to become acting Chief Engineer for the Hudson Motor Car Company late in Jesse Vincent was a very close friend of Hudson s Howard E. Coffin. He joined Packard on July 29, 1912, and began his rise there. World War I briefly affected-but did not interrupt-his career. Commissioned as a Major in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, he achieved immortality for his role in creation of the Liberty V-12 aircraft engine during World War 1. Collaborating with Elbert J. Hall of the Hall-Scott Motor Co, the pair designed the V-12 Liberty power plant for the Army Air Force in just five days. The Aircraft Production Board, then headed up by Howard E. Coffin of the Hudson Motor Car Co. and his assistant Edward A. Deeds, a major stockholder in Delco, set the basic parameters for what would come to be known as the Liberty. The new engine would be lighter and slightly more powerful than the Rolls- Royce Eagle. Modular construction, employing common cylinder and valve components, would slash development time and permit the engine to be used on all types of airplanes from trainers to heavy bombers. And all this would be accomplished within the strictures of a conservative design philosophy. The first of many expedients was to telescope layout into a two-day (some say five-day) marathon at the New Willard Hotel in Washington, DC that began in the afternoon of May 31, J.C. Hall of Hall-Scott provided practical, handson input and Jesse Vincent, Vice-President of Engineering for the Packard Motor Co., was charged with the more academic aspects. Design was heavily influenced by a Packard racing engine and by the eight-cylinder Lorraine- Dietrich, then considered as the Allied engine with most potential. The Aircraft Production Board approved the layout and less than six weeks later Packard had a hand-built 8-cylinder L-8 prototype running on a stand. At General Pershing s request, the L-8 was put on hold in favor of a 12-cylinder L-12 that would be more powerful than existing Allied engines. The first of these was tested in August, America was behind the times in aircraft design and chose a British design to mass produce, the Airco DH4. In the United States, the Boeing Airplane Corporation, Dayton-Wright Airplane Company, the Fisher Body Corporation, and the Standard Aircraft Corporation produced the DH-4 with the Liberty L-12 engine for the American Air Services.
