1 CLOISONNÉ CALENDAR Volume 58 No. 2 April-June 2012 ODYSSEY RESTORATIONS 25TH ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE On February 18, Odyssey retorations opened it doors to old car enthusiasts from around the area to celebrate 25 years of serving the old car hobbyists. There were members from our club, and UMRCCA, I talked with CasNawrocki briefly and he looked well, our club visited his shop in 2010 in Duluth. Tom Rasmussen played host and answered questions from many who attended. There was also a Derham bodied 38 Packard Victoria V12 that was down to the metal and in the process of restoration. The scale of this car was impressive, as was the quality of the metal repair that was evident and ongoing in the course of the work. The photo reference shown here is interesting and gives some insight into the restoration process, as a reference in being sure the look of the car is faithful to the original. Continued on pg. 6

The food was good and the service was entertaining. Mike played harass the wait staff, but they were stern, and handled him appropriately. A team was appointed to reconnoiter LaCrosse, Wisconsin for the joint meet with the Iowa club in August. 3 PAINT BASICS by Mike Dulinski You ve decided it s time to have your car painted. It sounds easy, just send it to the body shop and it comes out looking like new, not necessarily so. There are many steps along the way from an old relic to a gleaming piece of art. Dozens of things can go wrong in the restoration process that can make the time and money spent a complete loss requiring the whole process to be done again. Proper metal preparation is critical so rust doesn t come back. Sandblasting blasting and media blasting are a couple of ways to remove old paint & rust. Sandblasting uses silica sand or flint like material but can distort or ruin light metal parts, it s usually used on heavy parts such as frames. Media blasting uses material such as soda or walnuts so thin metal isn t distorted. Soda Media Walnut Shell Media As soon as a part is blasted rust can start so it s imperative the parts be sprayed with epoxy or an etch primer as soon as possible. Primer on rust damage exposed after blasting Before and after on a frame In the old days (seems not that long ago) spot putty was used to fill the small scratches remaining after sanding body filler. It was a lacquer based product and didn t dry until after about a month. As it dried it shrank and the scratches reappeared. Today a non shrink 2k primer is used to fill scratches and build up the surface so it can be sanded smooth & straight. For a long time the paint of choice is base coat clear coat, a process developed in the early 80 s. It s done by applying numerous coats of paint which has no shine and a clear coat applied on top to produce a beautiful, deep, shine. In the early 80 s it was common to see vehicles with half of the paint flaked off due to ultraviolet rays distorting the paint, base coat eliminates this problem. It can also be sanded and polished. Paint Layers Basecoat Clearcoat Process Restorations take hundreds of hours and choosing a credible restoration shop is critical for a long lasting, timely repair. Recently I heard of a Caribbean that went to a paint shop and never came back due to a shop owner with questionable character. Bodywork is an art form and the artist s ability varies from person to person. Make sure the project is insured and insurance increased as progress continues. Remember, private tow vehicle insurance doesn t cover a car on a trailer. Consider time and money spent on a project, often you can save thousands of dollars and frustration by buying a car already restored. 3

5 In Loving Memory Virginia Virgie Berg I m sure her many friends will be saddened to hear of Ms. Vergie Berg s passing late last year. Ms. Berg participated in many club events in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. For her many friends there will be a memorial May 26th in Perham, closest town to her home in Frazee. Remember when Minnesota Packard Club History The Spring Tour May 21, 1978 Minnesota Packards left Burnsville and drove to Waseca to see a rare Bohman and Swartz 1941 Packard along with other locally owned collector cars, and enjoyed a Pot Luck at Maplewood Park. Valentine Potluck 1989 The club drew a large group of 50 folks for Valentines Day looks like it was a big feed! Connie Bren, Vergie Berg, Ann Peltier, Roz Flynn and Donna Given catch up on what s been happenin. Carolinas Tour August 1993 A group from Minnesota Packards toured to Asheville, North Carolina, visited the Biltmore Estate, Mt. Mitchel and participated in judging of cars. Starting the adventure to Asheville, some of the participants, left to right. Carl Cedergren, Debby Wendel, Tom Brace, Ellen Watson, Gene Peltier, Ann Peltier, Ann Emerson, Doris Steinbach, Paul Emerson, Fred Steinbach. Fred and Doris Steinbach charging up Mt. Mitchel in their 1939 V-12. Gene and Ann Peltier s Patrician can be seen over the hood. In the editor s opinion, this is the view of a Packard over the hood on the road and at speed. 5

6 ODYSSEY RESTORATIONS 25TH ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE (continued) Cars on display included a fabulous 32 Stutz that is headed to Amelia Island, a combination of parts there were brought together as Tom explained to create a rare and originally correct auto of the highest Quality. There were other interesting Packards on display a 34 receiving some attention to the engine bay as the engine was disassembled for some rework. The engine of the Stutz displays a jewel-like quality. If auto restoration is in your future, be sure and keep Tom and his crew in mind as they certainly can get the job done to the highest standard! 6 A lovely car for a sunny day once the maintenance is done!
