1 Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center Summary on Rainfall, Agriculture situation, Reservoir levels and Minor Irrigation tanks status during December 2014 Rainfall During December, Under the influence of the trough of low pressure over South-West Bay of Bengal off Srilanka and Tamilnadu coast from 11 th to 14 th December, State had experienced to Active Monsoon conditions over many parts of North Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka. Whereas in the remaining days of the month, the monsoon was weak. During December, the state as a whole recorded an actual amount of 16 mm of rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 10 mm with percentage departure from normal being (+)64%. Thus the state as whole is classified under Excess category During the period from 1 st October to 31 st December 2014, the state as a whole recorded an actual amount of 162 mm of rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 188 mm with departure from normal being (-)13 %. 2 Agriculture : Sowing status Rabi Target 33.7 lakh ha. coverage as on lakh ha. Actual area coverage as on lakh ha. Actual area coverage as on lakh ha. Reservoir Status The levels at Varahi, Harangi and Alamatti reservoir are less when compared to the 10 years average levels and also previous year level for the corresponding period. Status of Minor Irrigation Tanks Out of total 3580 minor irrigation tanks in the state, only 22% of the tanks had storages capacity of more than 50% of their respective capacity, 41% of the tanks with storages capacity of 30% to 50% of their respective capacity and remaining 37% of the tanks are dry.

3 PROGRESS OF RAINFALL DURING THE PERIOD FROM 1st December to 31st December 2014 (STANDARD Month NO.12) 1. Among the 747 Hoblis of the state the rainfall was: Excess (>=20%) (-19 to +19%) Deficit (-20 to -59%) Scanty (-60 to -99%) No rain (-100%) 369 Hoblis 114 Hoblis 116 Hoblis 148 Hoblis Nil Hobli wise rainfall pattern is given in Table-1.1 and pictorially depicted in Fig.1.1 Table-1.2 depicts the classification of Hobli based on rainfall pattern during December Monthly rainfall pattern in 4 meteorological sub-regions of the state (1st December to 31st December 2014). South-Interior Karnataka: During December, rainfall was excess in Davanagere, Mysore districts, normal in Chitradurga, Mandya, Tumkur districts, deficit in Bangalore Rural, Chamarajanagara, Chikkaballapura, Kolar districts and scanty in Bangalore Urban and Ramanagara districts. Among the 63 taluks, rainfall was excess in 17 taluks, normal in 7 taluks, deficit in 25 taluks and scanty in 14 taluks. Last year for the same period rainfall was excess in 1 taluk, normal in 1 taluk, deficit in 6 taluks, scanty in 50 taluks and no rain in 5 taluks. Among the 281 hoblis, rainfall was excess in 83 hoblis, normal in 37 hoblis, deficit in 64 hoblis and scanty in 97 hoblis. Percentage departure of the monthly rainfall from normal since 1973 in South-Interior Karnataka is presented in figure given below:

6 Perusal of the above figure indicates that during 2014 the South-Interior Karnataka recorded rainfall of 6% more than the normal, which is relatively more than the corresponding period of last 4 years. North-Interior Karnataka: During December, rainfall was excess in Bagalkote, Belgaum, Bellary, Bidar, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Gulbarga, Haveri and Koppala districts and normal in Raichur district scanty in Yadgir district. Among the 69 taluks, rainfall was excess in 52 taluks, normal in 6 taluks, deficit in 8 taluks and scanty in 3 taluks. Last year for the same period rainfall was deficit in 1 taluk, scanty in 29 taluks and no rain in 39 taluks. Among the 277 hoblis, rainfall was excess in 181 hoblis, normal in 39 hoblis, deficit in 30 hoblis and scanty in 27 hoblis. Percentage departure of the monthly rainfall from normal since 1973 in North-InteriorKarnataka is presented in figure given below: Perusal of the above figure indicates that during 2014 the North-Interior Karnataka recorded rainfall of 106% more than the normal, which is relatively more than the corresponding period of last 4 years. Malnad Region During December, rainfall was excess in Hassan, Kodagu and Shimoga districts and normal in Chikkamagalur district. Among the 25 taluks, rainfall was excess in 16 taluks, normal in 5 taluks, deficit in 3 taluks, scanty in 1 taluk. Last year for the same period rainfall was excess in 2 taluks, normal in 4 taluks, deficit in 4 taluks, scanty in 12 taluks and no rain in 3 taluks. Among the 128 hoblis, rainfall was excess in 69 hoblis, normal in 31 hoblis, deficit in 14 hoblis and scanty in 14 hoblis. Percentage departure of the monthly rainfall from normal since 1973 in Malnad Region is presented in figure given below:

7 Perusal of the above figure indicates that during 2014 the Malnad Region recorded rainfall of 52% more than the normal, which is relatively more than the corresponding period of last 4 years. Coastal Region During December, rainfall was excess in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. Among the 19 taluks, rainfall was excess in 13 taluks, normal in 1 taluk, deficit in 3 taluks and scanty in 2 taluks. Last year for the same period rainfall was excess in 3 taluks, normal in 1 taluk, deficit in 1 taluk, scanty in 13 taluks and no rain in 1 taluk. Among the 61 hoblis, rainfall was excess in 36 hoblis, normal in 7 hoblis, deficit in 8 hoblis and scanty in 10 hoblis. Percentage departure of the monthly rainfall from normal since 1973 in Coastal Region is presented in figure given below: Perusal of the above figure indicates that during 2014 the Coastal Region recorded rainfall of 102% more than the normal, which is relatively more than the corresponding period of last 4 years.

South-Interior Karnataka During the period, rainfall was excess in Chitradurga, Davanagere districts, normal in Bangalore Rural, Bangalore Urban, Mandya, Mysore, Ramanagara, Tumkur districts and deficit in Chamarajanagara, Chikkaballapura and Kolar districts. Among the 63 taluks, rainfall was excess in 13 taluks, normal in 30 taluks and deficit in 20 taluks. Last year for the same period rainfall was normal in 3 taluks, deficit in 50 taluks and scanty in 10 taluks. Among the 281 hoblis, rainfall was excess in 58 hoblis, normal in 138 hoblis and deficit in 85 hoblis. Percentage departure of the cumulative rainfall from normal since 1973 in South-Interior Karnataka is presented in figure given below:

11 Perusal of the above figure indicates that during 2014 the South-Interior Karnataka Region recorded rainfall of 3% less than the normal which is relatively less than the corresponding period of last year. North-Interior Karnataka During the period, rainfall was normal in Belgaum, Bellary, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppala districts and deficit in Bagalkote, Bidar, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur and Yadgir districts. Among the 69 taluks, rainfall was excess in 9 taluks, normal in 24 taluks, deficit in 32 taluks and scanty in 4 taluks. Last year for the same period rainfall was excess in 2 taluks, normal in 17 taluks, deficit in 44 taluks and scanty in 6 taluks. Among the 277 hoblis, rainfall was excess in 33 hoblis, normal in 70 hoblis, deficit in 142 hoblis and scanty in 32 hoblis. Percentage departure of the cumulative rainfall from normal since 1973 in North-Interior Karnataka is presented in figure given below: Perusal of the above figure indicates that during 2014 the North-Interior Karnataka Region recorded rainfall of 23% less than the normal which is relatively less than the corresponding period of last year.

12 Malnad Region During the period, rainfall was deficit in Chikkamagalur, Hassan, Kodagu and Shimoga districts. Among the 25 taluks, rainfall was normal in 7 taluks and deficit in 18 taluks. Last year for the same period rainfall was normal in 5 taluks, deficit in 12 taluks and scanty in 8 taluks. Among the 128 hoblis, rainfall was excess in 10 hoblis, normal in 35 hoblis, deficit in 82 hoblis, scanty in 1 hobli. Percentage departure of the cumulative rainfall from normal since 1973 in Malnad Region is presented in figure given below: Perusal of the above figure indicates that during 2014 the Malnad Region recorded rainfall of 25% less than the normal which is relatively less than the corresponding period of last year. Coastal Region During the period, rainfall was normal in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada district. Among the 19 taluks, rainfall was excess in 3 taluks, normal in 13 taluks and deficit in 3 taluks. Last year for the same period rainfall was excess in 6 taluks, normal in 7 taluks and deficit in 6 taluks. Among the 61 hoblis, rainfall was excess in 11 hoblis, normal in 35 hoblis and deficit in 15 hoblis. Percentage departure of the cumulative rainfall from normal since 1973 in Coastal Region is presented in figure given below:
