Tiger Tales By Ken Smith Where to begin? 2007 has been a very interesting year for Pontiac owners. First, the GTOAA Nationals in Columbus, Ohio were very good to the Cruisin Tigers (as was documented in last month s issue). We brought home a lot of hardware! Next was the 35th Annual Pontiac Oakland Club International (POCI) Convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma and we had a couple of club members (Brandon Goodwin & Steve Lucas) take their cars for the fun. However, their fun was short lived when a shower of paint fell on the 400 cars on the show field next to the host hotel. The first big question was where the heck did that paint come from? (And I am very loosely paraphrasing what was REALLY said.) Well, it turns out that a paint contractor was spray painting the wrought iron railings on the third floor of the breeze that was present at the time.) The last count that I was given of vehicles that have filed an insurance claim was 123. Can t you people just learn to live with the FREE brownish-gray paint accents? Probably not! And the last big event has to be our own 17th Annual Indian Uprising All Pontiac Car Show. For 16 years this event has been dry, but this year Number One had other ideas. Rain bunches of moisture scads of the wet stuff! I was sure that at 6:30 AM as I was driving (or was that surfing) to this event I saw a vehicle that had all the animals paired off and a bumper sticker that read My other vehicle is an ark! Through the next hour plus timeframe it continued to rain. Then just before we opened the gates to allow entry onto the show field the sun started to peek through the clouds and it was show time. The rain cost us at the registration table. We had 182 pre-registrations and normally we get the same amount of day-ofshow registration, so we should have set the record for show cars, but just like the Cubbies we ll have to wait til next year! But we did have 188 cars, a very enthusiastic group of Pontiac owners, Arnie The Farmer Beswick, Jim The GTO s Godfather Wangers, Ken Crocie, Pontiac Motor Division brought a 100 foot display with a variety of their vehicles, and a group of spectators that spent the day with their collective jaws dragging on the pavement. The show field had: 239 cars registered; one of every year GTO and Judge ever made; and a collection of Pontiacs including a Beaumont (a Canadian Pontiac), Bonnevilles, a CanAm, Catalinas, a Fiero GT, Firebirds, Grand Ams, Grand Prixs, a Grandville, LeMans (or is it Lemanses?), a Solstice, Star Chiefs, Tempests, TransAms, and Venturas. (Oh, the beauty was unbelievable!) The downside might have been the humidity. I swear that every time I inhaled I could actually hear my lungs gurgle. This Month s Cover By Ken Smith Paul Weinstein enough said. Thanks for the beautiful cover. Jim Wanger s GeeTO Tiger (in the upper right corner) on the same page as Pontiac Motor Division s G8 (lower right corner). Sixteen years of great weather and then rain we were due! But it was still a great day. Because this month was our annual Indian Uprising show and because of the large quantity of photos that were taken I am dedicating the next two issues of this publication to photos and stories of the arid-free event. So send me (via the club website) all the photos that you took and would like to share with fellow club members. I promise that I will give credit to the photographer(s) and the owners of the cars (if I can deduce that info). This is everyone s big chance to get their work published in an award winning publication this one! So do it!

The President s Page By Sylvia Heidlauf Hello everyone, Wow has this been a busy month for us. Rich has been racing non-stop for what will be 6 weeks straight. He ran a new series called IMSM. They have several different classes in this series. Rich's class is the Street Avenger. Every class has a special time that they can run. In Rich's class the fastest they can run is Ri ch is undefeated and is in first place. Rich will be racing at Byron for this event on Sunday August 26th, if anyone is interested in coming over there to cheer him on. Now the Summit Super Series is another story. It seems every time there is a race, it has been rained out or something crazy happens. We still don't know what his standings are. For those of you who missed the Nationals in Columbus this year, you missed another good show. Unfortunately, the races were cancelled due to rain. But all in all we had a very nice time. There were so many beautiful cars there it was difficult to choose your favorite. We (The Tigers) had a great evening out on our last night there. With all of the Tigers that won awards including Chapter of the Year, we all decided to go out and celebrate. I know that we all had a great time. Well, that 's about all for now. Rich, Steven and I are headed for Norwalk, Oh. for the largest Pontiac show in the world. I am so looking forward to this. It has been four years since we were last there. If you haven't been you all need to experience it at least one time in your life. It is one heck of a good time and a great experience. I will not be at the August meeting, I have another family wedding, but I will definitely be at the famous Best of Show meeting in Sept. See you soon. Chapter Meeting Minutes By Sylvia Heidlauf The meeting started at 4:15pm at Mr. Beef and Pizza. There were 33 people in attendance and about 25 GTO's in the parking lot. We had 4 new members attend the meeting. A.J. Salerno with a1967 GTO, Dave and Jan O'Malley with a 1966 GTO, Tom Tkaczyk with an 04 GTO and Pat DiOrio with a 1970 GTO. The board and officers are looking for someone to head the Christmas charity fro the needy families. Betty Last will help, but we still need someone to head this project. The officers and board seemed to have agreed to give the remainder of last years Uprising T-Shirts to the needy family charity if there are any left over by that time. John Campbell treasures report says that we have a large amount of money in the bank as of now. This is all before the Uprising Charity, etc. The Pontiac display that was at the Nationals will be at our Uprising including the new G8. We have positions open for anyone who is interested in running. The positions are as follows: President, Second Vice President, Treasurer and two Board Seats. Nick Spensieri was nominated for second V.P. Jim Martino was nominated for a board seat and Doug Rudisuhle is running as an incumbent. Many stories were told on the experiences at the Nationals this year. Sylvia let everyone know about Rich's racing progress. They are looking for sponsors for next year. Racing has become very expensive and now that Steve will be racing next year as well, it will be difficult to keep up two cars. If anyone knows of people or companies that are willing to sponsor Tiger Tail Racing, please contact Rich so that Tiger Tail can continue racing in the future.

A Definition of Acceleration By Brandon Goodwin For those of you who are "into" cars, drag racing and such, you may be familiar with a lot of this, but I thought I'd pass it along because this is just an amazing collection of information. For those of you who are not "into" all this... well,... this is STILL pretty amazing stuff! Maybe it will help explain why us "gearhead" types are so enthralled with the incredible performance of these cars. One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows of NASCARS at the Daytona Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1-1/2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced. A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster's supercharger. With 3,000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a nearsolid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.. At the stoichiometric (stoichiometry: methodology and technology by which quantities of reactants and products in chemical reactions are determined) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitro methane, the flame front temperature measures 7,050 deg F.. Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.. Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.. Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After halfway, the engine is dieseling from compression, plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1,400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.. If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.. In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph (well before half-track), the launch acceleration approaches 8G s.. Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence.. Top Fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!. Including the burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load.. The redline is about 9,500 rpm.. Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated $1, per second.. The Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is sec. Anthony Schumacher 10/01/05 Joliet, IL mph The Top Fuel dragster top speed record is mph Tony Schumacher 05/25/05 Hebron, OH (Okay, come on now you have to be impressed with the sheer muscle that is flexed from one of these cars.)

Stern s Turn By Jim Stern It s A Secret: You didn't hear this from me, OK? Members Bill & Patti Nawrot, and their GTOAA National Best of Show Original 72 GTO, will be featured in the October issue of The Legend. I know you will find their story to be interesting reading. August, 2007 Do You Know Mr. Baratono? Member Ron Baratono may get upset with me for shining a spotlight of recognition on him but, he deserves it. First, he steps forward and volunteers to take on the responsibility of contacting The Greater Chicagoland Pontiac Dealers Association in an attempt to secure them as The Premier Sponsor of our 2007 Uprising Show and, almost single-handedly, he makes it happen! Next, while serving on The Uprising Show Committee, he volunteers to seek out a new food vendor for our show and again, he delivers by lining up Geneva s Josef s Elegante Meats and Deli which will be serving a varied assortment of good things to eat. Ron then suggests having the Kane County K-9 Unit attend and hold a working display of their dogs and, you guessed it, he delivered on that as well. Excellent articles about our show began to appear in several local newspapers in the western suburbs and none of us knew specifically who had made this happen. Three days before our show I find out - we have Ron to thank for this as well! Finally, if you were at our July Chapter meeting, you may have heard the announcement made by our 1st VP, Bob Zeiger, that Ron had volunteered to take on the role of Club Advertising Chairperson. That job involves seeking out and securing companies & individuals willing to pay for advertising space in Tiger News and within our very active WEB site. I am betting another job well done will result! So Ron Baratono - the spotlight is upon you from a very appreciative club. The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it. - Michelangelo By-Laws & Elections: Last month, once the votes were counted, changes to our Club By-Laws were approved by a count of 24 to 1. The reality that only 25 voted, in part, validates why some of the by-laws changes were recommended, discussed and unanimously endorsed by your Club Officers and Board of Director Members. Officer Term & Dual Service Limits: If there were a ready pool of members, willing to step forward and take on the required responsibilities, term limits and prohibiting members to serve jointly as Officers and Board Members would be a good way to introduce new thinking into the mix, but, that has not proven to be the case. For this reason, the by-laws now allow Officers to serve beyond the clearly stated term limits if unanimously approved by Club Officers and Board Members. And, Officers can now be Board Members at the same time, if approved by a 2/3 favorable vote of elected Officers and Board Members. The vote to override these service rules can only be invoked if no willing & qualified candidate is available. By-Laws Change Procedure: Previously Club by-law changes obligated our Club to mail copies of proposed by-law changes to all members seeking their approval. This too would be a good thing if the majority of our members voted, but, that is also not the case. To reduce Club expenses, and speed the approval process, a 2/3 approval vote of The Board of Directors is now all that is required. A while back, in this space, I mentioned possible member apathy. Now, several months later, I see this differently. I now believe that the majority of you feel that it s just a Club, keep it simple and I can relate to that. If this is true, then these changes to our by-laws were a step in the right direction. Comments / Suggestions Are Always Welcome - jimstern@nrets.com

!7th Annual Indian Uprising Photos By Paul Weinstein Maybe there weren t as many cars as last year, but the quality was still there. We were very happy that Pontiac brought one of their four display trucks with its canopy. Under it they had three plasma TVs to show our Cruisin Tigers burnout video. It actually looked better three times better!

Jim Wangers spent the day talking automotive history with his many fans, while the sweet sounds of classic rock n roll music (delivered by 3D Sound Company) entertained us all. How about another front and rear view of the Pontiac G8? Now this is a car with a very aggressive stance. Hey honey, do want me to run to the store for some milk?

Miscellaneous By Paul Weinstein Every now and then a brand new GTO would glide down the assembly line. Every worker had their tasks to complete before the car had passed beyond their station. Head light assembly, windshield installation, trim pieces, body panels, etc. The cars were (and still are) masterpieces of automotive engineering, Think about what you would do differently if you could order your classic ride right from Pontiac s factory (again)... tri-power, air conditioning, power options, tilt column, hood tach, interior/ exterior colors, Rally wheels, RamAir engine, convertible vs. hardtop vs. post, etc. God s Country Pontiac supports our show in a big way and I d like to see if we can at least send out some advertising for them in our newsletter. (Hope this covers your request. - Editor) This is the show that I lost my rear end at (the car s rear end not my personal rear end!!) last year and they were very kind to me. They are a GTOAA chapter. And by the way, this is a VERY nice drive early on a Sunday morning. It could possibly have been the best drive to get to this show that I have ever taken in my car. (It s in Madison, WI.)
