2 About P.O.C.I. The Cruisin' Tigers GTO Club is the GTO non-regional specialty chapter of Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI), the premier national organization for Pontiac, Oakland & GMC enthusiasts. Why Join POCI? The Pontiac-Oakland Club International, the world s oldest and largest organization (over 8,800 strong) of Pontiac enthusiasts, is devoted to the restoration and preservation of Pontiac, Oakland and GMC vehicles. The POCI promotes the preservation and accurate restoration of these vehicles through its various services, publications and events. Membership in POCI allows access to a vast pool of information, experience and parts resources. Local and specialty chapters are also available to further the POCI membership experience. $35 annually for U.S. membership.. Smoke Signals POCI s full-color, monthly magazine, Smoke Signals, is devoted to Pontiac, Oakland and GMC vehicles and their owners. It contains owner profiles, event coverage, technical data and restoration tips. You will find stories about our members and their vehicles, along with performance articles and news of chapter activities across the USA, Canada and around the world. The Classified section provides the membership with a forum for the exchange of parts, information and vehicle-related items. Ads from members, whether for sale or wanted, include parts, sales and service literature, and promotional items as well as complete cars. Classified advertising privileges are extended to members only - FREE of charge. Only Pontiac, Oakland and GMC related, non-commercial items are permitted. Web Site: The newly updated web site is a wealth of information for members: registration forms, tech forums, chapter news, event listings, convention information, online classifieds, ID codes, links to an on-line member forum, many vendors and sponsors- the list goes on and on. Members can also access on-line POCI member information including name, phone number and vehicles owned. The website is constantly adding new and useful information. Credit cards accepted include: VISA, Master Card & Discover. Technical Advisors The POCI Technical Advisor program has been a great success and continues to grow as membership expands and new needs arise. These advisors are board-appointed members possessing expertise in a particular area. Questions from correct paint and upholstery, to mechanical rebuilds, to performance issues, can be addressed by PO- CI technical advisors. Library The POCI library is a massive collection of Pontiac, Oakland and GMC literature, unlike any other, anywhere else. It contains valuable technical data (manuals, engineering reports, etc.) as well as marketing and sales information (brochures, posters, photos, material samples, etc.) All this is available to our members. Materials cannot be sent out, so photocopies are available at a modest cost. POCI Convention This is the gala event of the year for POCI, attracting hundreds of members and their cars from all over the world. The convention rotates annually to various locations throughout the US and is jointly sponsored by the POCI and the POCI chapter servicing the area or a POCI Specialty Chapter. 5 Editor Update As you know, Classifieds run here and the website., with the start of the new year (season), I m wiping out all prior ads, that came in during I have a few new classified that came in, do far in 2017, plus the sticky-note board from the February meeting. I will print pictures on a space allowed basis. What does that mean? Now, when the ads are light, I ll put the pictures in, later in the summer, I may drop the pictures as space may be tight. Ads will run a minimum of 3 months, again, space will determine and/or editor discretion. A note to advertisers: renewal requests will also be going out this month for the coming year. I d like you to review and update your artwork as appropriate. Thank you, The Editor New Illinois Vehicle Auto Insurance passing of Ron Klomp, Cruisin Tiger #53 We were recently informed by his family that long time Cruisin Tiger, Ron Klomp, has passed away. Ron joined the club in September, He had a white on white 1967 GTO hardtop. The below is from his daughter, Jenni. Just received the new Tiger News this morning in my to print it out like I always do for my dad. I wanted to let you know he passed away in January. I know the renewal comes up soon and my mom (Henrietta), brother (Kevin) and I would like to continue receiving Tiger News as his GTO is staying in our family. My mom will still mail in a check like she always does. I know he rarely made it to any of your events or shows but he still felt a part of the club with Tiger News. He proudly displayed his white Crusin' Tigers white satin jacket in the car and tiger stuffed animals at our little local car shows. Whenever he had questions, issues, or work to be done on the car, you all were always there. Thank you for that. Have a great day, Jenni Boyd What a nice statement from Jenni. We are very sorry to hear about your father, he did make it to a fair number of our earlier events, and for all you new guys, yes, we had white jackets at one time.
6 President s Page by Randy Ray Admit the Truth. Don t overthink it. Those are 2 rules I try to live by. Its pretty simple, admit the truth, if you can t be honest with yourself, well, you know the rest. The other one is, don t overthink it. Don t make things complex if they don t need to be. Saw a great quote by a retired Admiral. If a plan can be misunderstood, it will be misunderstood. So, where am I going with this. The racing world just got done with the Daytona 500, and the newspapers were lamenting the decline of NASCAR. Mostly due to bad TV ratings and attendance being down. The follow up articles are in the vein of NASCAR management doesn t care, or is too stubborn to address it. I concur mostly, so, once again, NASCAR is tweaking the points method for a Championship and messing somewhat with the aero effects on the car. How to fix a lot of issues, however, can be answered in the photos here. First, the totally bad ass Pontiacs above, all canted over in preparation of the high banks at Daytona. Those things are just mean looking, then David Pearson s Ford Torino. The cars are actually sort of stock. Admit the Truth NASCAR was complicit in allowing modifications in the interest of greater speed. The teams sold them that certain(?) modifications would allow faster speeds and/or greater safety. NASCAR wanted the cars faster as it made better headlines. The Pearson car there is a 68, just before rules started to slow the cars down and 1970 saw the wing cars come in, and then they were gone by 71, also big blocks were gone in 71. So, here we are in 2017, one thing that can t be changed is, and this is a hard one to admit is everytime these cars went faster, was THE VERY FIRST TIME, and that creates excitement all by itself. The fastest lap at x track, new track record, first 150 mph qualifying, first 200, etc. So, now what. How about running STOCK CARS? Like it says in the name. Not some template car. Each manufacturer has a very fast car now, Camaro, Mustang, Challenger. If you don t have a rear drive car that can run with them, tough adios Toyota. Look at the 1962 Pontiacs above, daylight under the car, stock ride height. Look at Pearson s car, has about 1 of factory spoiler (really just an uptick in the trunklid). Prescription for the boys in Daytona real cars, not template cars, stock ride height, no or factory spoiler only, and for good measure take some tire width away. Boom, cars you can recognize, good for fans, and manufacturers, speeds become manageable and put the driver back in control, good for NASCAR. Don t over think it. Happy Cruisin, Randy

11 Old and New this month we feature; Ken Smith What a wonderful world we live in classic muscle cars & new muscle cars. I was a Pontiac owner most of my life and when it came time in 2014 for me to trade up from my 2008 Pontiac G-5 there were no Pontiacs to look at. Remember that Pontiac left me, I didn t bail on them. So I went to my second love, which was the Plymouth Cuda or the Dodge Challenger. And since Chrysler Motors shut down their division that made the Cuda that narrowed the playing field to the Dodge Challenger. I had the option of purchasing a 6 cylinder Challenger (in black) or a Hemi Challenger R/T (in black). Can you guess which one a tripower GTO owner would lean towards? I have fun cruisin year round. The Challenger is my open road cruiser. I have driven it to Sarasota, FL three times. I can do that trip of 1300 miles in 18 hours. The greatest features of the new car are: the 375 HP 5.7 Liter Hemi, the GPS, the sound system (that has a 40 GB hard drive to store my favorite oldies), the body style (that just screams 1970 s muscle), and heated front seats (for winter time cruisin ). My 64 black GTO hardtop comes out only when the weather is good and is my gear jamming 4- speed, with three two barrel Rochesters and a 355 differential. My GTO is my short distance cruiser (which includes a drive to Pontiac, IL annually to the Pontiac Museum). My two cars affect the age groups differently anyone under 30 enjoys the Challenger and above that age category loves the classic GTO. Me? I love em both!
