About P.O.C.I. The Cruisin' Tigers GTO Club is the GTO non-regional specialty chapter of Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI), the premier national organization for Pontiac, Oakland & GMC enthusiasts. Why Join POCI? The Pontiac-Oakland Club International, the world s oldest and largest organization (over 8,800 strong) of Pontiac enthusiasts, is devoted to the restoration and preservation of Pontiac, Oakland and GMC vehicles. The POCI promotes the preservation and accurate restoration of these vehicles through its various services, publications and events. Membership in POCI allows access to a vast pool of information, experience and parts resources. Local and specialty chapters are also available to further the POCI membership experience. $35 annually for U.S. membership.. Smoke Signals POCI s full-color, monthly magazine, Smoke Signals, is devoted to Pontiac, Oakland and GMC vehicles and their owners. It contains owner profiles, event coverage, technical data and restoration tips. You will find stories about our members and their vehicles, along with performance articles and news of chapter activities across the USA, Canada and around the world. The Classified section provides the membership with a forum for the exchange of parts, information and vehicle-related items. Ads from members, whether for sale or wanted, include parts, sales and service literature, and promotional items as well as complete cars. Classified advertising privileges are extended to members only - FREE of charge. Only Pontiac, Oakland and GMC related, non-commercial items are permitted. Web Site: The newly updated web site is a wealth of information for members: registration forms, tech forums, chapter news, event listings, convention information, online classifieds, ID codes, links to an on-line member forum, many vendors and sponsors- the list goes on and on. Members can also access on-line POCI member information including name, phone number and vehicles owned. The website is constantly adding new and useful information. Credit cards accepted include: VISA, Master Card & Discover. Technical Advisors The POCI Technical Advisor program has been a great success and continues to grow as membership expands and new needs arise. These advisors are board-appointed members possessing expertise in a particular area. Questions from correct paint and upholstery, to mechanical rebuilds, to performance issues, can be addressed by PO- CI technical advisors. Library The POCI library is a massive collection of Pontiac, Oakland and GMC literature, unlike any other, anywhere else. It contains valuable technical data (manuals, engineering reports, etc.) as well as marketing and sales information (brochures, posters, photos, material samples, etc.) All this is available to our members. Materials cannot be sent out, so photocopies are available at a modest cost. POCI Convention This is the gala event of the year for POCI, attracting hundreds of members and their cars from all over the world. The convention rotates annually to various locations throughout the US and is jointly sponsored by the POCI and the POCI chapter servicing the area or a POCI Specialty Chapter. 4 Tail-Less Tiger By Ken Smith task complete and start enjoying the new season. Okay, it is March and I have a reminder that needs to be sent to all our club members RENEW! RENEW! RE- NEW! Was that subtle enough? If you are not sure if you already paid, give me a call at or me at Kenz64GTO@aol.com or check the cover letter that sent you this electronic version of the club s newsletter (it should have your DROP date). Please don t make me chase you for the $30.00 annual club dues or the additional $20.00 (if you want to also receive the newsletter in a hardcopy format). I m like your mother if you want your room clean clean it yourself. If you want to remain a member in good standing of this club send me a check (made out to the Cruisin Tigers GTO Club ) and do it soon, because I want to get this And now for the good news March 20th is the first day of Spring and the snow is melting and you can almost hear the rumble coming from the garage. Or maybe you are ahead of me and have put your beast on the road, because you felt the need for speed!. This Saturday March 21st is the 4 PM club meeting at Mr. Beef & Pizza located at 1796 Elmhurst Road in Mt. Prospect. According to the current weather forecast there probably won t be many classics in the parking lot, since it is calling for rain and snow. On a sad note, Rich Butler lost his mother (Teresa) on February 15th. Rich & Donna have run the 50/50 drawing collection at our Indian Uprising for a few years. Sorry for your loss. The photo in this column was taken by Eric Carlsen last Fall at the Standard Oil Gas Station on old Route 66 in Odell, IL. This was taken on our way back to Chicago after attending the Pontiac Automobile Museum car show in Pontiac, IL. If you ever go to visit the museum, you have to find the time to drive to this station which is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1932 based on a house with a canopy style architecture that gave customers a comfortable feeling they could associate with home. In its heyday it gave travelers a place for the kids to get out and stretch their legs. A two-bay addition was added in the 1940s to service travelers. This station sold gasoline until the 1960s and then became an auto body shop into the 1970s and then closed its doors for good. It is now a welcome center for the city of Odell. The station won the National Historic Route 66 Federation Cyrus Avery Award in 2002 for the year s most outstanding Route 66 preservation project. So take some time this Summer and stop by. We ll see you down the road!

Notes From The Pres. (Seasonal Readiness) By Randy Ray Wow, the sun is out and Daylight Savings is upon us. I had done a good job of suppressing any pre-season whining about our weather. This week though man, I want to get my car out NOW. I need to hear the burble between the gear shifts. This is especially so with World of Wheels occurring this weekend. Here, does anyone remember the World of Wheels theme music in the 70s? I do, it was Fire on High by ELO. Man, I remember that instrumental jam and then the details on World of Wheels. That was before MCACN, and before any bicycles showed up. It was a time of cotton stuffing wrapped around Keystones to simulate smoke, and chrome sidepipes with ventilated heat shields. And this was on the Vans! Oops. Custom paint was heavy metallics, glass, lace, map lines and the original green sparkle steering wheels. I remember a guy in high school having a tri-power 65 GTO with a white aftermarket 3 spoke steering wheel. I know a guy restoring a former World of Wheels 66 Nova SS, he s got some work to do as it got cut to be a drag car in the late 70 s. Best of luck to him. We are going to have a great summer, if you were paying attention last month you heard us mention cruises and some get togethers. While it s still a little early now, make certain you ve got your ride ready for Spring, as we ll be doing the TriPower dust off in early May, and then we ll be having some fun at our meetings, breakfast runs and cruise nights. Lots to have fun at and spend some well-earned time off with our rides. The hobby is really fun now as the cars are really diverse, while we all have opinions on what we like, we get to see and enjoy a great mix. You like straight stock restorations got em, drivers with some owner applied touches got em, survivors as they weathered the years got em, customs and high end resto-mods got em. I like em all, man I look forward to seeing the cars out. I get a kick out of Sunday mornings and seeing hot rods heading off in some direction and you know they re looking forward to a great day. We all will have opportunities to get our cars together at the various cruise nights: Rolling Meadows, Lombard, Mt. Prospect, Dog n Suds and more. Every time hot rods gather you know the good times are happening. And while that may seem a bit over the top, think about it, it s not. Is anyone having a bad day at cruise night no, they re having a good time. Last year I remember Rick, Paul and Bob leaving Rolling Meadows and watching the taillights and the great sounds of the GTOs, that is a great scene. And yes, 66 does have some pretty awesome taillights. When you meet your buddies at the gas station to meet up and head out isn t that a great time. Or pulling into the pumps with 3 other GTOs with you? You know what I mean, you know you re going to cause a scene, and it s just great. All the civilians with their 4 door blandmobiles, and for a split second, they know it. Mmm blandmobile getting 87 Regular or a vintage GTO rumbling at the Super 93 pump? You know what I mean. As you can see, I m pretty excited about our upcoming season together, I hope you are too, as I can hardly wait to see some chrome tips, some side marker lights that have a design (remember when we called them running lights), cars driving with their parking lights on (can t do that with a lot of modern cars), vaguely yellowish round incandescent headlights, and any other tell-tale signs that the car forming in your distant vision, is a-ok. 6 February Meeting Minutes By Mike Brandt Club President Randy Ray called the meeting to order at 4:01 PM. There were 52 members in attendance and no Pontiacs or GTO s in the parking lot. Randy told the audience that Betty Last and Jane Lucas were going around the room selling 50/50 raffle tickets for a chance to win some cash and some auto related merchandise at the front table. He also reminded everyone to sign the attendance booklet that is being passed around the room and gave out some sticky note pads to anyone who had items for sale. Randy asked if there were any new members in attendance and it appeared we had a few. First was Curt Maxfield who has a 73 GTO that is currently being restored and should be finished around April 8 th. Next we had Bill and Barb Babyar who have a fully restored 67 LeMans/GTO resto-mod. Future club members include: Jim and Joanne Biebrach who have a Fathom Blue 67 GTO; Chris and Pam Woodlief who also have a 67 GTO; and Phil and Sherri Nensel who have a 68 GTO convertible. Welcome to our Club and we will be looking forward to seeing your cars at future Club meetings, cruise nights and of course the Indian Uprising. Randy introduced the Club Officers and Board of Director members and told everyone that if they had any questions or concerns that these were the people to contact to get the answers they were seeking. He added that Jim Stern had found some old posters from our 2005 Indian Uprising that pictured Arnie Beswick, Linda Vaughn, Jim Wangers and Ken Crocie, and that everyone could take a copy at the end of this meeting. Thanks Jim. Dick Edwards donated a tach/dwell meter, complete with instructions, to be given away as part of the 50/50 raffle. Nick Spensieri also brought about two dozen automotive magazines for whoever wants to take one or more. There is also two copies of Jim Wangers book Pizzaz, that will be raffled off with the 50/50 tickets. Jim donated these books to the Club and we will be raffling off two copies at each meeting through July. If Jim decides to attend our Indian Uprising this year, you can have him autograph your copy. Thank you Dick, Nick and Jim. Randy reminded everyone that the BOPC Swap Meet will be held tomorrow at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles and the Cruisin Tigers will have a display table set up to recruit new members to our Club and the Pontiac-Oakland Club International, of which we are the GTO Specialty Chapter. Randy also encouraged the new attending members to join POCI to connect themselves to the largest organization in the world that is all Pontiac. We are very fortunate to have Wayne Beran as a member of our Club. Wayne just happens to be the Vice-president of POCI and a Director of POCI s Great Lakes division. POCI members who have received their issue of Smoke Signals magazine should have found a ballot inside to elect POCI Divisional Directors. Wayne is the incumbent for the Great Lakes Division and is asking for our votes to retain him in that position. Randy introduced Indian Uprising co-chairmen and current Tigers of the year Ken Arendt and Paul Weinstein who will talk about our upcoming 25 th Annual Show in August. They had Uprising Awards and Dash Plaque coordinator, Wayne Beran, show everyone a sample of our new for 2015 First Place Award that consisted of a silver (25 th ) cup atop a beautiful trophy that stands about one foot tall. In previous years our first place award was a plaque, but we wanted to do something special for our 25 th annual Show. One-hundred of these beauties will be awarded after the Show. Ken reminded everyone that the new location for the Uprising is at Pheasant Run Resort, which is directly across the street from our old location at the Expo Center. It affords us the opportunity to have an extra 45 cars inside an air-conditioned arena. We opened indoor registration earlier this year than in the past and we already have 61 cars signed up to be inside the Megacenter. There are about 40 spaces left, so don t delay registering if you would like to be inside the air-conditioned arena in early August. Outside parking will be on asphalt instead of grass just in case we have some damp weather we won t have to deal with mud and puddles. Hotel rooms are also selling fast, so make your reservation as soon as possible to get a room. The host hotel is Pheasant Run, with The Hilton Garden Inn being our overflow hotel. Keep in mind that once you park inside the Megacenter you are there for the duration of the Show. Space constraints make it prohibitive to allow unlimited entering and exiting as was the case at previous Uprisings. Jackie Rausa has been busy with the advertising end of our Show and we will be seeing more and more of the Uprising ads in various publications and notices. Initial copies of sponsor/vendor/registration fliers are available to

February Meeting Minutes (cont.) By Mike Brandt anyone who would like to begin soliciting support for our Show. We are in need of volunteers in four major categories of Show planning. The first being a Show flier designer who can come up with an attractive and informative flier to be passed out at cruise nights, car shows, etc. Secondly, we are looking for a celebrity co-ordinator who will be in contact with and organize displays or seminars regarding that particular celebrity. Next we are looking for an awards presentation co-ordinator who will be in charge of the display and setup of the various awards that will be presented at the end of our Show. The last category is that of major sponsor solicitation. This has always been an instrumental part of our Show, as it is a large portion of revenue generated for the Show and the charities which we support. Please consider stepping up and getting involved to keep our Show one of the best Pontiac events in the country. Randy asked the members to be sure to visit the Club website as it is constantly being improved and upgraded with plenty of technical information about our beloved Pontiacs. The burnout videos are coming back and new things are being added on regular basis, so visit the site often to see what new and exciting things are being added. There are also links to other sites that may have the info that we don t have on our site due to the volume of content needed to give you the answer that you are looking for. Membership coordinator and Tiger News Editor, Ken Smith, informed us that the current number of members in good standing is at 287, only 21 short of the Club s all time high of 308 back in 2002/2003. Ken said that he did not have any hardcopies of Tiger News with him because he had not yet received them from the printer. Since we have gone mainly electronic with Tiger News the number of hardcopies printed went from 300 to 50, which apparently has lowered us as a publishing priority. Ken reminded everyone that the hardcopy of Tiger News is only in color on the front and back pages, while the electronic version is in full color and printable of your computer. You can also enlarge images and just click on links instead of having to type in the link manually from a hardcopy. There is also an upcharge for the hardcopy of $2.00 due to printing and postage costs. Ken also reminded everyone that April is membership renewal month. This can be done on Club website, by mail or in person at a Club meeting. The 25 th anniversary yearbook is finally complete and is getting its finishing reviews by some of the original seven members of the Club. The printing of the yearbook should happen in about a month, and Ken will keep us informed. Randy mentioned that Club member John Cutts and his black 389, tri-power, 4 speed 65 GTO was the subject of a recent Daily Herald article. John is the original owner of his car and it is an unrestored, untouched car that was recognized by Jim Wangers at one our recent Indian Uprising Shows as one his favorites. Congratulations John. We also have a few other Club members who are original owners of their cars. Kudos to them for hanging on to their cars for the last 40 to 50 years, especially since the muscle cars of the late 60 s and early 70 s were considered to be gas guzzling insurance company liabilities that everyone was trying to get rid of. Randy gave a quick rundown of monthly Club activities for the upcoming season. March will feature a guest speaker from Resto-Rods of Crown Point, IN. April will be the celebration of the Clubs 26 th anniversary with pizza and a birthday cake at our regular meeting place, Mr. Beef and Pizza. May 2 nd will be the Tri-Power Automotive spring dust-off in Libertyville. Ric Murphy will give a Meguiars demo at our May Club meeting. June 13 th we will have the first breakfast run that will be organized by Rich Kroon with details to be determined. We hope to do a few of these during the cruising season. After our June Club meeting there will a GTO cruise night at the Mt. Prospect Metra station. July will have a cruise to the Lombard Cruise Night in downtown Lombard. August, of course, will be our own Indian Uprising All Pontiac event at Pheasant Run in St. Charles. September is yet to be determined as we would like to have our monthly meeting at a possible sponsor s facility that will allow some of our tigers to stretch their legs, if you know what I mean. Gary Firch brought in a very limited production gas door emblem for an 81 Turbo TransAm that he purchased on -line as the winning bidder. It is a brand new, never installed rare item that Gary said he just had to have no matter how much it cost. Jim Neciak has a friend who runs the car show at the Rotary Grove Fest in Downers Grove. He told Jim that if he could get at least 10 GTO s to come as a group that he would arrange for a trophy to be given to the best car of the group. The date is June 28, 2015 and the gates open at 8 AM through 11 AM. The show ends at 3 PM.

Internet Stuff By Various Club Members Al Kern sent this: Back in Dec. of 69, I special ordered a GTO with a bench seat w/arm rest automatic. I went all over the options sheet and made two (2) mistakes. I didn't order, "The Humbler", nor did I order the Ram Air III, which I think was approx. another $70. Never less, I loved that car! Only took 13 to delivery. This one is about a man who gets a 68 GTO for his 60th birthday and was sent to me by Ron Baratono & Al Kern. How about some old car movies that were sent by Al Kern & Bob Zeiger. VanDerBrink Auctions will liquidate the contents of The Auto Gallery Museum. Collector Cars, Memorabilia, Parts, and Vintage Race Cars. Lou has served the Illinois Area for years and now will be moving to Colorado. Plan now to attend this auction. This was sent by Eric Carlsen. Kevin Callahan sent a YouTube video of the building of his Irish Eyes. Al Kern sent a YouTube video of the 2012 POCI Nationals that we co-hosted. I realize that the 50s were before our beloved GTOs were on the road, but it led up to that time. Doug Rudisuhle

Ames Performance Acquires Performance Years By Chris Casperson A lot of the long time members have read many of my thoughts about the future of our hobby. Some great times are still ahead for all but for how long we all have at least considered. Well that all depends on all of us! The days of business as usual and the days of 'hobby as usual' need to be carefully analyzed. I've been encouraging that our hobby come together since the inception of the PY forums back in There's too much fragmentation in our hobby. For years the hobby was growing so much, the fragmentation didn't really hurt us. Our original and still current slogan is 'bringing the Pontiac Hobby together'. Because of places like the PY Forums bringing people together, because there is power in numbers, the hobby has flourished. Who would have imagined that you can practically build an entire car with the parts now available. Who imagined that street cars would be comfortably running in the 10's! Who imagined car gatherings would eclipse 50,000 at not just one location but multiple locations around the country. Well it all happened and continues to happen. But with all of this success, there comes a realization that our hobby might be growing at the pace we've been accustomed to. Maybe there are just TOO many events competing for car owners time. Maybe just a few too many businesses have jumped on the bandwagon to try and steal a piece of the pie and make a quick buck. So yours truly, as well as Kevin and Don at Ames, are putting our money where my mouth is. Yours truly is going to practice what I preach. Effective immediately, we're proud to announce that Ames and PY have teamed up to be the largest and now the only exclusive classic Pontiac parts supplier in the Nation. This new event will have a powerful, positive effect on our hobby as we move to the future. By combining resources, service levels go up, buying power goes up, focus increases and costs come down. That equals a better buying experience for all of you. Now I know what you are all thinking as hopefully you're now grabbing some popcorn and a beer while reading this. (Well maybe that's not a good idea if you are in a car. Well maybe it's a terrible idea if you are driving! Ok, so pull off the road and read on.) Maybe you're thinking this is just a clever way for Chris to sell out and ride off into the sunset somewhere? Well hold on there Budweiser breath. That couldn't be further from the truth. While Ames will continue what they do REALLY well (directly support the retail Pontiac customer), I will be heading up the newly formed Max Performance Group (btw, proudly named after my first grandson) whose purpose is to create new and better products for retailers like Ames so we can enjoy the cars we love even more. Up until now, PY has always tried to burn the candle at both ends. We've been a catalog retailer, a Pontiac Forums community leader and quietly behind the scenes have been responsible for hundreds of reproduction parts for the Pontiac market. The reality is that you know what happens when you try to do to much. Sometimes you do neither of what you do as well as you'd like. Well that's exactly what happened with PY. I looked at our wholesale operations that now include our automotive Locks, Pontiac Wholesale, Snappin Turtle and Pypes product lines and realized one commonality. They all service dealer networks. So it is a natural progression to channel all our resources to make these product lines better for our customers.
