5 Presidents Page - Jim Stern August, 2013 July Meeting Recap: During our July meeting we opened our annual election process as dictated by our governing by-laws. Candidate requirements and the possibility of appointment should no one run for a given position were discussed. We did not have tech s for 71, 72, 73, 74, 04, 05 & 06 model years. During the meeting Bill Nawrot volunteered to serve for thanks Bill, who s next?? Technical articles for inclusion in Tiger News are also in short supply, please contribute! Recruitment: Our membership volume has been hovering in the 250 to 280 range for several years with a yearly, expected, dip at membership renewal time (April) and gradual return by late Summer (August). This places us in the upper ranks of independent car clubs nationally - something we are very proud of. I propose we now set our sights on a 300 member goal by year end - won t you please help make this happen? Perhaps you don t know we have an excellent recruitment tool - a tri-fold 8 1/2 X 11, 2-sided color flyer which is available in any quantity you can put to good use. Our purpose and mission statements, membership benefits, our history of charity giving to needy children s causes, dues requirements and membership application form are all included. One more thing, as you seek to recruit new members don t forget to mention that one does not need to own a Pontiac GTO to join us, all that s required is to be a fan of the vehicle which launched the American Muscle Car Era. Let me know how many flyers you can put to good use. Be sure to include your full name and mailing address. - jim-stern@att.net POCI / GTOAA Nationals: By my latest count 23 of our members registered Pontiac s at this years Nationals. 6 July Meeting Minutes By Mike Brandt President Jim Stern called the meeting to order at 4:02 PM. There were 54 members in attendance and 18 Pontiacs in the parking lot. First time attendees were Henry Walper, who has a 65 GTO, Mark Boratto who has a 69 Firebird Conv., and Norm Swenson who has a 69 GTO that runs but doesn t stop too well. Welcome to all of you and we hope that you become meeting regulars. Jim let everyone know that longtime Club member Bob Bruzek is available for a one-on-one with any Club member to discuss their likes and dislikes about the Club and to see what we can do to make our Club more appealing to new and existing members. Club member Bill Nawrot asked if anyone had any suggestions on how to reglue his Original vinyl top that is starting to lift on some of the edges. Since Bill s car is a POCI and GTOAA judged Survivor Gold, replacing the top is not an option. Jim introduced the Club Officers, Board of Directors and Staff. He mentioned that Betty Last and Jane Lucas were going around the room selling 50/50 tickets for cash and prizes. Jim also explained how the you have to be here to win jackpot is run. First Vice-president, Ken Arendt, asked apparel chairman, Mark Grimmenga, for a status of our ability to use PayPal for sales during the Uprising Show. After some back and forth with PayPal, he was able to gain control of our account and things should run smoothly from now on. Mark also mentioned that next year, for the Club s 25 th anniversary, Betty Last has put together a committee to contract with Magianno s Little Italy in Schaumburg (same site as our 20 th anniversary), to celebrate our Club s Silver Anniversary on Sunday April 13, 2014 from 2 to 4 PM. There will be a cost of $25.00 per person and a cash bar. He also asked Ken Smith to put together a 25 th anniversary book of some type, to include pictures of the celebration at Magianno s. Treasurer, John Campbell was next up with his report on Club finances. Our income consisted of membership renewals and new joining members and sponsorship monies. Our expenses included Tiger News printing and postage, Show fliers, and some apparel. Given that, we were still about $2,000 to the good and the Club is well into the black. Next up was Mike Brandt with the Secretaries Report. He asked if anyone had questions about the minutes from last month and reminded everyone of the importance of signing the attendance book as it is being passed around the room. According to the Club by-laws, this is very important if you would ever decide to run for a Club Officer s or Board of Director s position, as your meeting attendance determines your eligibility to run for these positions. Ken Smith, our Membership Chairman and Tiger News Editor, stated that as of today we had 107 preregistrations for the Uprising, and that July 27 th will be the last day that anyone can pre-register. Ken also said that as of today we stood at 258 members strong and we always gain new members during the Uprising. He said the printed version of Tiger News went to the Post Office on Wednesday and the version, in full color, went out on Thursday. Ken asked if anyone had pictures from July s POCI/GTOAA Co-vention in Dayton and he would try to get them in August s newsletter. Rick Last, our Uprising co-chairman, was up next with news on our final committee meeting that will be held next week at the DuPage Expo Center at 9:30 AM. For any committee member that chooses to attend, we will meet for breakfast at 8 AM at Colonial Restaurant in St. Charles immediately before our meeting at the Expo Center. Rick said that we are looking for Show day help, as well as help during our Saturday cruise-in. There is still about 1000 Show fliers left and some cruise fliers left. Rick said to grab some when you leave and try to pass some out in this last couple of weeks before the Show. It was agreed upon that we would run a 50/50 drawing on Saturday and draw the winner at the band s first break. Also, Doug Rudisuhle will be going around to the cruise-in attendees and try to solicit donations for our charities in his bucket. We will run a new 50/50 drawing with all new tickets during Sunday s Show, and Doug will be in his normal spot as arena greeter. Jim asked if anyone in the room had attended the Co-vention in Dayton. Here is a list of Cruisin Tigers that attended or won awards at the Co-vention: Art Barrett, Wayne Beran, Tony Boehm, Ken Braun, Tim Dye, Tom Kilis, Rick Last, Roger MacZura, Ralph Marsai, George Mazurek, Marvin Minarich Jr., Bill Nawrot, Randy Pribyl,

7 July Meeting Minutes (cont.) By Mike Brandt John Sieffert, Mike Sparks, Jim Stern, Terry Weiner, John Wright, Bob Zeiger, Jim Zeivel, Roger Zeivel, and Dave Zeivel. Quite a Club presence considering that Dayton is 320 miles away. Jim brought up the fact that election time is nearing and what positions will be up for renewal. Second Vicepresident, Denny Vodvarka will not be running for re-election. Treasurer John Campbell will accept appointment to the position if no candidate is nominated or not interested in running. President, Jim Stern, is not running and wiil not accept appointment to the position. Board of Director, Mark Grimmenga, will accept nomination as will Director, Doug Rudisuhle. Mark Grimmenga was nominated for the Director s position by Nick Spensieri and seconded by Bill Nawrot. Doug Rudisuhle was nominated for a Director s position by Bob Zeiger and seconded by Ken Smith. Jim brought up the fact that we are looking for some tech advisor positions to be filled. The open positions are; 71-72, 73-74, and 04, 05, & 06. Bill Nawrot accepted the tech advisor s spot for the model years. Thanks, Bill. Our thanks to Steve Lucas, again, for bringing in items to be raffled off in our 50/50 drawing. This month he brought in a brake/clutch pedal locking device, similar to The Club for your steering wheel, and a Makita 3 3/8 cordless saw. Rick Bogoff also donated two White Sox tickets to be raffled off. Thanks to both of you for making our drawing interesting and not just about the money. The results of our 50/50 drawing are as follows: brake/clutch locking device, Patti Nawrot; Makita cordless saw, Cindy Thompson; two Sox tickets, Rick Last; $119.00, Mike Judy. The name drawn for the you have to be here to win pot of $ was Doug and Roberta Mecklenburg. Unfortunately they were not in attendance, so the pot rolls over to next month. The meeting adjourned at 5:23 PM. P.S. See you at the Uprising. 8 POCI/GTOAA Co-Vention Photos By Various Club Members Here are my pictures from the POCI-GTOAA Co-vention Included are some 1/8 mile runs at Kil-Kare raceway on Friday 7/12/13. It was a warm sunny day and pretty well attended. As you can see, Arnie "the Farmer" Beswick was there with the Tameless Tiger II. Also making an exciting appearance was the glorious Boss Bird! On Saturday at the Nutter Center, it was another warm and beautiful day. The turnout was smaller than expected. I was told about 650 cars came and expectations were closer to 1,000. T here wasn't a lot for fans GMC or the pre-war examples in general (a trend we've all noticed at most shows). So, I made sure to include some pictures of those. There were so many great Pontiacs to see! Tempests, GTOs, Judges, Grand Prixs, Bonnevilles, Trans Ams, Fieros and ultra-rare Super Dutys. My favorite had to be the '62 Catalina raced by Jeff Tyree with all those aluminum parts including the doors! This show appeared to be organized and well worth the trip for me. I'm looking forward to next year's events, with the GTOAA in Pittsburgh and the POCI in Wichita. It's unlikely I will attend both, so I'll have to decide on one. That's a tough decision! - Dave Harris

12 Board of Directors Meeting By Ken Smith Prior to the July Club s Monthly Meeting, the Board of Directors had their own meeting. Mark Grimmenga, the Board s Chairman, said that we are still awaiting the IRS response to our club s past tax status. The first topic was the approval of expenditure and cost allocation for the 25th Anniversary luncheon planned for April 13th, 2014 at Maggiano s Little Italy located at 1901 East Woodfield Road in Schaumbeurg, IL. The first vote was to approve the contract specifying a $3,400 minimum sales commitment (plus tax & gratuity) and remittance of a $1,000 deposit. Bob Zeiger moved to approve and Rick Last seconded the motion. It passed unanimously. The second vote was that each attendee would pay $25 regardless of their age. Bob Zeiger moved to approve and Rick Last seconded the motion. It passed unanimously. The third vote was for the Club to absorb the sales, tax, 20% gratuity and cost of the table center pieces (maximum $1,000). Jim Stern moved to approve and Bob Zeiger seconded. It passed unanimously. A request was made by the Board for Ken Smith to investigate creation and cost of a Shutterbug souvenir booklet for sale to Club members shortly after this luncheon. Minimum quantity, price breaks, reorder capabilities were issues that were discussed. Ken accepted this task and will report back in September. Other details that need investigation are: video, speakers, guests, etc. The second topic was Tim Dye s request for the Cruisin Tigers sponsorship of the 50th Anniversary of the GTO at the Pontiac Oakland Automobile Museum. The two levels offered were: Primary at $2,000 and Secondary at $750. The motion was made by Nick Spensieri to decline and seconded by Jim Stern. Unfortunately, because of our IRS situation we have to decline until our tax status is finalized. The third topic was tied to the Secretary s Report in the issues of Tiger News. The amount of money that is in the Club s Treasury will not be printed in the monthly issues of Tiger News, since copies of this newsletter are given to non-club individuals at various shows (MCACN, Indian Uprising, Pontiac Oakland Automobile Museum, etc.) it was discussed that our financial status should remain within the Club. Jim Stern moved for this rule and Bob Zeiger seconded. It passed unanimously. The fourth topic was the distribution of Club Donations for Timing of the distribution of Indian Uprising charitable contributions needed to be decided. Jim Stern and Rick Last disagreed on whether the IRS issue should affect our charitable giving. The suggestion was made to ask our Club s attorney. A motion was made by Rick Last and seconded by Jim Stern on making our charities distribution equally between our three Board approved and selected organizations: United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), Friends for Equine Therapeutic Activities (FETA) and IFSA Burn Camp. The vote was unanimous. Next the amount had to be voted on. Three values were presented: $2,000, $2,500 & $3,000. The vote was: $2,000 had one vote, $2,500 had three votes and $3,000 had two votes. So the $2,500 selection won. The Board decided to meet again in September before the regular Club Monthly Meeting. If you have any issues that you want presented in this meeting, contact a Board member and discuss your topic.

14 Assembly Plant by Eric White (WAC Pontiac Brand Manager) In 1926, a companion automobile to the Oakland Motor Car Company's existing product lineup was introduced. It was named the Pontiac, for the Native American tribal chief of the Ottawa people; also the name of the city in the southeastern portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan where the Oakland was built. The immediate success of this new car was such that expanded manufacturing capacity became a necessity. In June of 1926 General Motors allocated $15 million for a new construction project. Two hundred forty-six acres adjoining the existing Oakland facility on the northern outskirts of Pontiac, MI were purchased for the expansion. The project represented the largest private U.S. construction venture of 1926, and its completion would require the use of 5,000 railroad carloads of materials. Among the world records of the time established by this venture were the employment of the largest steel sash and cement tile roofing orders. The design of the main assembly building, which would be designated plant number eight, featured the use of large amounts of glass windows in the upper levels and skylight areas, thus the term "daylight plant" was logically linked to the new structure. During World War Two, the Pontiac assembly complex, along with most of the American automotive industry, was converted to wartime armament and munitions production. The last civilian Pontiac passenger car assembled in 1942 rolled off the Pontiac, Michigan line on February 10th of that year. It would be 31 months before another automobile would be built in that plant. In support of the war effort Pontiac Motors was assigned the duty of producing: the Bofors 40mm mobile field gun for the Army, the Oerlikon 20mm anti-aircraft gun used on naval vessels, aircraft-launched torpedoes, artillery shells and casings, tank axles, diesel engine parts, truck engine parts, and GMC buses for wartime civilian use. PMD earned six Navy "E" flags and two Army-Navy pennants in recognition of its outstanding wartime manufacturing efforts. By 1967, when the 12,000,000th Pontiac was produced, a staggering sum of materials had been employed to produce that impressive number of vehicles. Among the totals were: 20,197,000 tons of steel, 3,992,000 tons of cast iron, 252,800 tons of zinc, 218,000 tons of copper and 212,000 tons of aluminum. Additionally, 14,200 tons of nickel (enough to make $90 million worth of nickel coins), 1,020,000 tons of rubber, and 55,900,000 gallons of paint were consumed in the 41-year process. The 131,000,000 square yards of upholstery material utilized over the previous four decades would cover nearly 24,550 football fields. And it would require 10,000 railroad tank cars to haul the anti-freeze used in all those Pontiacs. By the time the last car (a Buick Regal Grand National) rolled down the Pontiac home plant assembly line in mid -December 1987 (Fieros were assembled in the nearby Fisher Body plant #17), over 26,800,000 Pontiacs had been welded, glued, and screwed together by the various General Motors Assembly Division plants. Although not all of these cars had been produced in the Pontiac plant, the largest yearly Pontiac production totals always came from this facility. The end of line for this historic assembly plant came in the mid to late 1990s. Between 1994 and 1998 the main complex, made up of Plants two, five, six, eight, nine, eleven, fourteen, and forty-nine, were all demolished. Today a U.S. Postal Service distribution center stands approximately where the Central Foundry was located. Should you over tighten these items they will have a tendency to gall against each other and weld together. Here are some ways of preventing this from happening: a) use a stainless bolt with a steel nut or vis-à-vis. b) if you must use both together, use anti-seize on the parts prior to assembly. c) should you not have anti-seize available, use Maylox. You may find it s more reasonable, readily available and works as well. If on the other hand you wish to put something together and not want it to come apart Fastening Phillips Head Screws: Have you ever tried to fasten a Phillips head screw in a limited amount of space? A space where your needle nose fingers won t fit? Try applying grease to the tip of the screwdriver then stick the screw to the driver and drive it home. After securing, wipe any excess grease from the head of the screw and driver. Controlled Fastening: When assembling things together where there are several fasteners, lossely fasten all units in place before tightening. This will allow the parts to shift, avoiding abuse to the part or fastener. Crossthreading Avoidance: When reinserting a screw into plastic or soft material avoid crossthreading by taking the screw and backing it up (counter-clockwise) until you feel the threads connect. You will feel a slight bump through the screw. You can then turn the screw in (clockwise) without crossthreading. Quik Threads Threaded Inserts: This item is for use on metal or plastic parts where the thickness doesn t allow for proper threading to hold together. Consider using a product called QUIK THREADS by Fastener products in Wauconda, Illinois. This item is inserted into the predrilled hole and with a hand tool expands behind the material similar to a Molly anchor. The difference is the threaded insert offers various sizes of machine screw threads to suit the fastening need. Metric and SAE threads are available. Chassis Paint: CHASSIS SAVER is a rust preventative paint available in gloss or satin black. It compares to POR-15, but is more reasonably priced. It may be applied with a spray gun, but I ve had great result with a foam brush (no streaks). If it gets on your hands and you do not immediately wash it off with lacquer thinner, expect black marks for about four days before it wears off. I ve found it to be especially useful on plastics, I ve found this item at Terrace Supply and I m sure it s available at other auto paint outlets. Parts Cleaning: When cleaning parts prior to applying a thread locking compound, try using brake cleaner or lacquer thinner for good adhesion. Valve Spring Pressure Tester: When testing springs for correct pressure, use a bathroom scale (don t tell your wife and make sure it is clean when returning it) and a drill press. Put the scale under the drill press. Set the stop on the press for the measured height and depress the spindle to the stop and read the pounds off the scale. All springs should be within specifications and within 10% of each other.
