Tail-Less Tiger By Ken Smith So what did I forget to mention in last month s issue of Tiger News? Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but my dear, it s so delightful And since we ve no place to go let it snow let it snow let it snow! My personal opinion is I DO have someplace to go, so knock off the continual depositing of the white stuff. Let it rain a couple of times to get the salt off the streets. And it will be time to fire up my 50 year old baby. Every year as Spring approaches, I anticipate the first time I get to fill my garage with the pungent smell of burning fossil fuels. My mind keeps trying to remember what sound comes out of the exhaust pipes when at idle. Also how much fun it is to light em up. So let s get on with the rain and clear the streets of the de-icing agents. First, there have been a couple of deaths within the Cruisin Tiger family that need to be addressed. Former club president Ed Dreksler (CT #84) lost his wife Roberta last December. Also, Bernice Caniglia (mother of Torry Caniglia) passed away in December. I wish to express my sympathy to our club members and their friends and families at these losses. Second, the photographs on the Tiger News cover of the February 2014 issue from the club Christmas party were taken by Mark Grimmenga. Credit where credit is due. Third, our connection to being an international car club is Jan Ekman (CT# 910) of Helsingborg, Sweden. Denny Vodvarka (CT# 325) sent me an about a car show in Sweden ( that has over 20,000 U.S. cars covering a three square mile area. I bet if we look real hard we may see Jan and his 68 Solar Red with black vinyl top GTO on the field. Fourth, I have been promising many club members to do a public service announcement, so here goes. Never have your cruise control active during rain. Hydroplaning could be the consequences, which will cause the car to accelerate once the tires have poor or no contact with the highway surface. Snow, ice, slush, or even rain can cause wheel-spin and loss of control, situations to which drivers must react quickly. Although cruise control can generally be cut off by the driver's simply tapping the brake pedal, the extra reaction time required for a motorist relying upon cruise control to recognize the danger of the situation when his wheels begins to spin or slide on a slippery surface, bring his foot up off the floor to the brake pedal, and disengage the cruise control can be crucial (especially for drivers lured into a hazardous level of inattentiveness on long, flat stretches of road). So be careful and we ll see you down the road.

Notes From The Pres. By Randy Ray Hi, and thanks for taking the time to take a look. I want to thank everyone for coming out to the first meeting of It s nice to have the first one behind me. For those of you that were not there we announced a lot of fun items are on the docket for Monthly meetings will have some sort of presentation from a sponsor and key industry/hobby participant, or we ll have a demonstration or discussion on an aspect of repair or restoration. The schedule as of now is: March Joe from the Parts Place will be speaking on the reproduction parts industry. April the Howard Baker Insurance Agency on classic car insurance and Dennis from Ride On Appraisals will speaking obviously on valuations and appraisals. May will be a hands on demonstration by Ric Murphy of Meguiar s in the parking lot on proper buffing procedures and materials. He will be working on a car that needs some degree of assistance. June will be a presentation by Ron Moller of RM Restorations and myself on how to set your valve lash this is key when putting a new engine together or you want those new roller rockers from Summit. July is still to be determined but I d like to do detailing as we get close to our show. The next months are still in the planning stages, but will be fun as well. The other big item covered is we will have a Fall Color Cruise so start planning on attending that. It ll be the first Saturday of October, the 4th, and will be a one day event heading into the Northwestern part of Illinois. Details will follow as we get closer. And, it s our 25th Anniversary a club this year, this is a really big deal as most clubs do not survive, it s a testament to all the hard work done by those previous to us, and being continued by our current Staff. Accordingly, we will have a 25th Anniversary event at Maggiano s in Schaumburg, a great Italian restaurant, please contact Betty Last if you plan on attending, cost is $25 per person, non-refundable. I look forward to seeing everyone on the 15th this month, and the You Must be Here to Win pot may break a $1000at this meeting just like the lottery, you have to play to have a chance, in this case, its simple, just come to our meeting. Tip For The Day By Randy Ray It s almost Spring and some of us may be getting ready to pull cars out and start cleaning them. Before it gets hot is a great time to Clay Bar the finish. Do not use a lubricant with silicone, silicone is a polish and can make the clay bar slide right over the old wax you are want to remove. Mequiar s Final Inspection #34 is non-silicone cleaner that is a recommended product for use as a lubricant with a Clay Bar cleaning. A Clay Bar removes the grit and goo that has adhered to your car s finish, this is road grime, sap, even charcoal or fallout from your favorite burger joint. When your car has been washed just slide your fingers down the finish, if you can feel anything, or its not slick, it needs to be cleaned.

February Meeting Minutes By Mike Brandt New Club President Randy Ray called the meeting to order at 4 PM, and introduced himself to the 61 attending members. He said the Club has a lot of events planned for the year. One of the new things we will see at meetings is an easel at the back of the room for members to place for sale or wanted ads for their junk in the basement (extra Pontiac parts). At the end of the meeting he will collect those notes and make sure they get posted in the newsletter and our internet website to help members sell their extra parts. Some of the familiar things we will see is Betty Last and Jane Lucas going around the room selling 50/50 raffle tickets. Randy asked if there were any new members in attendance. Rich Presz of Homer Glen, IL said he has a 71 GTO convertible that he is presently working on and hopes to have the car done this summer. Welcome, Rich. Randy said he has a 73 T/A that he has owned for about six years and it is nowhere near done. Presently it has the trunk cut out of it and is at a shop near his house. Randy mentioned that Club member Jim Nieciak s 65 GTO is the subject of an article in the January 2014 issue of Lead Foot News and a copy of that magazine is being passed around for the room for all to see. Congratulations, Jim. Club member Gary Firch recently scored a 995 out 1000 points judged with his 81 Trans Am at the Muscle Car And Corvette Nationals. Interestingly, Gary does most of his own work on the car. Excellent job. Randy introduced the present Board of Directors and the present and former Club Officers. BOD members include Bob Bruzek, Mark Grimmenga (Chairman), Rick Last, Doug Rudisuhle (absent), Nick Spensieri (also Club Treasurer), Jim Stern (past President), and Bob Zeiger. Club Officers are Ken Arendt, 1 st Vice-president, Rich Kroon, 2 nd Vice-president, and Mike Brandt, Secretary. Randy also thanked Denny Vodvarka, (former 2 nd Vicepresident), and John Campbell (former Treasurer), for their dedicated service to our Club. Randy talked about some of the shows and cruises going on this summer. The third week of Sept. will be the POMARC Show in Pontiac, IL. In the past, we have organized cruises from a couple of meeting points in the Chicago area for the cruise down to Pontiac. On Oct. 4 th there will be a Fall Color Cruise that will cover a couple of hundred miles of northern Illinois. Our cruise organizer, Rich Kroon, will be coming up with many more cruises throughout the year, so stay tuned to our newsletters and website for more info as it becomes available. One idea floated about was to have a Poker Run in September. A starting point, various stops along the way, and a finish point would need to be figured out. There will be plenty of subjects of interest during our future monthly meetings. During our March meeting, Joe from the Parts Place (Club Sponsor) in DeKalb, IL will be on hand to tell us about the world of restoration parts, which we all depend upon to keep our vintage Pontiacs running and looking GR Our April meeting will feature new sponsor, Mike Baker, to talk to us about insuring our classics and present club sponsor, Dennis Parus, from Ride on Appraisals, to talk about the importance of having a current appraisal value of your car. May will bring a live buffing demonstration from Ric Murphy, an authorized Meguiars representative. Our June meeting will cover valve train adjustments on our Pontiac engines. July will deal with the detailing of your car in preparation for a car show or other event. For September, we are hoping to organize a cruise to one of our sponsors shops to demonstrate the contribution they offer to make our classics what we dream they can be. Club member Jim Zeivel came in from Arizona and gave us some insight on some of the bigger collector car auctions like Russo and Steele, Barrett-Jackson, and Mecum, and what is hot and what is not. It just so happens that Mustangs are hot right now and our beloved Pontiacs are a little slow. Rich Kroon presented our Newsletter Editor and Membership Chairman, Ken Smith, with a stained glass Pontiac emblem for all the tireless work that he does, and has done, for this Club. Every time there is some sort of Club activity going on, you can be sure that Ken is helping out in some shape or form. Ken is the epitome of volunteerism and dedication when it comes to the Cruisin Tigers. He has bailed me out several times by taking the meeting minutes when I was unable to attend a meeting. I am honored to call him a friend and want to thank him on behalf of the entire Club for what he does to make the Cruisin Tigers the amazing organization it is today. Club member and POCI Vice-president, Wayne Beran, talked about the elections for the POCI regional directors. He wanted everyone to read the candidates bio s in the February 2014 issue of Smoke Signals magazine to

Feruary Meeting Minutes (cont.) By Mike Brandt make an informed decision on who to vote for. Election ballots are included with the magazine. Indian Uprising Co-chairmen, Paul Weinstein and Ken Arendt, talked about the preparations for our upcoming August Show. Remember, this year s Indian Uprising will be held one week later than in previous years. The new dates are Saturday August 9th and Sunday August 10 th. We did this to avoid the conflict of going up against the Ames Tri-power Nationals in Norwalk, OH, and another big show in Elkhorn, WI. This also gives Pontiac owners the opportunity to display their cars without having to decide to go to one place or the other. Parking for the indoor arena has been increased to $120 per car and a sign-up sheet is available for anyone who is interested. There are 52 spaces available and they go pretty fast, so don t wait too long. Online registration is now open, so register now. Due to its success last year, we will again have our Saturday night all-makes cruise-in along with a new band and some new and exciting activities. As in past years, we will again be offering Uprising Show license plates at a cost of $40 per set. If you had a number last year that you would like again this year, you must contact Rob Lozins. Stay tuned for more Uprising Show info as it becomes available. Don t forget about the Cruisin Tigers 25 th Anniversary Dinner Celebration on April 13 th, 2014 at noon at Magianno s in Schaumburg. Contact Betty Last to sign up. Hurry, limited space is available. Our resident fabricator of all things Pontiac, Steve Lucas, has made some items to be given away at the anniversary dinner. Steve has made some unique and fascinating things in the past, and I m sure he won t disappoint us this time either. Ken Smith (there he is again), will compiling a 25 th Anniversary Souvenir Book that can be purchased at a later date. Ken is asking anyone with photos of the early days of the Club to contact him for possible use in the souvenir book. Some decisions were made at the Annual Board of Directors Meeting with regards to membership dues. Dues will remain at $30 per year, and still will be due on April 1 st. However, due to the rising cost of printing and postage (which isn t even covered by the dues), Tiger News will be only available electronically as of October If you must continue to receive the newsletter in hardcopy form, there will be an additional charge. There will now be a multi-year discount of $5 available to those who sign up for three years. One year $30, two years $60, three years $85. Sorry for any inconvenience. Ken Smith said that we signed up four new members and that our membership numbers have reached four digits, the newest member being #1003. He also had new club roster books for those in attendance and will mail the rest out to those not at this meeting. Ken s home computer crashed on Feb. 7 th and he lost some newsletter content and had to redo them when he got his new computer. Ken will be purchasing a new Club computer in the next two weeks (with additional backup capabilities) that will be dedicated to Club information. This was voted on during the Jan Board of Directors Meeting. As the meeting winds down, it s time to get to the serious stuff. Money. Betty and Jane did their job of selling $324 of 50/50 tickets. Half of that, $162, was won by Ken Arendt. The other $162 was added to the you have to be here to win pot which stood at $815. The name drawn for the big pot was #976 Steve and Rhonda Ollerich. Unfortunately, they were not present and the pot rolls over to next month. That means next month s pot will be very close to $1,000. If that s not incentive enough to come to next month s meeting, you must be independently wealthy, or nuts. The meeting adjourned at 5:17 PM.

January Hot Rod Magazine By Bill Nawrot Back in September I submitted a photo showing my grandkids pretending to replace the oil filter on my '72 GTO to Hot Rod Magazine. The January issue just came out and they published the picture. So now I can add to my bragging rights that my car was featured in "Hot Rod Magazine" (there's no reason for me to say, they only showed the oil pan). I've attached the article. My grandkids (Jack & Will) are in photo #12.

My Pontiac Life By Gary Firch (12/21/2013) Now that John Deere has shut down for Christmas I have some time to do some repairs on the Grand Am. One week ago when it was the coldest morning of the winter, I went to the ATM to get some cash at 4:30 AM before work, I rolled my driver s window down and it would not go back up. I had to stay home from work to find a window switch to get my car fixed. I bought a new switch from the GM dealership and it worked until today. I rolled the window down halfway at the post office to mail letters today, this time it locked up and would not move. I was lucky and the Car Qwest auto parts had a regulator and motor assembly. After I drove to Tim Smith s garage in Andover, IL; I got it to work perfectly. Another problem is a slow loss of coolant, on other GM V-6 s that I have owned. The intake gaskets go bad and start to leak coolant into the crankcase. The easy way to spot this is to remove your oil fill cap and look for sliming milky material on your oil fill cap and inside the top of the valve cover. If there is a lot of coolant in the crankcase with the cap off and motor shut off, steam will come out the oil hole in the valve cover. This is not good for the engine oil, especially in cold weather. So next week I will replace the intake gaskets this should fix it. I am sure the head gaskets are fine, I have replaced the intake gaskets before on other GM V-6 s and it has worked. While I am doing this I am replacing all coolant hoses. Two years ago on my way to Texas I had a heater hose burst when I was passing a car on the interstate. I was lucky to have bottled water and a shop rag to put a wrap on it. This helped me to get to a auto parts store for a new heater hose. It is time to replace the water pump as this can now fail anytime also. The last item I am going to replace is the fuel pump, past experience has been the fuel pump to quit around thousand miles. My Grand Am has 140,000 miles on it. I need this car to run until it gets 200,000 miles on it, then I will find another Pontiac for a work car. So I will be busy next week fixing these problems. (12/24/2013) I did not know that my Trans Am won the Platinum Pick Judges Choice Best Pontiac Modified Award at the Muscle Car And Corvette Nationals. I was looking at the winners list about a week ago and saw my name on the bottom of the list for specialty awards. I left the car show too soon, so I ed Bob Ashton and asked him if there was an award for me. Bob said that Vicki would mail it to me, well I finally got it about a month after the show. This is truly the best for last! I had a great time at the MCACN and will always remember the show experience. This is the best indoor car show that I have been to; with the greatest collection of Muscle cars and Corvettes in the country! This is the last car show award for 2013 season, my Trans Am is finishing the year on top. I never thought this car would go this far in the Nationals, I have enjoyed every minute of it!!! (02/21/2013) I was not having a good day at work to begin with production delays and working 12 hour days. I thought that I had my problems with the 2004 Grand Am behind me. About 3 months ago I noticed a pudding colored slime on my oil fill cap. GM 3.4 L v-6s can have problems with leaking intake gaskets, so I replaced them. Well, I was leaving John Deere after another 12 hour day, I got on I-74 and was getting up to 70 mph cruising speed. I looked down at my temp gauge it was reading 260 degrees! It is time to pull over and let it cool. After it cooled down a little, I thought, well, let s see what happens next. I drove to the nearest gas station to check the coolant level; the reservoir tank was empty, so I filled it up. On the way home the temperature gauge was only reading 130 degrees. This just one reason why I use a failsafe thermostat. The thermostat stuck open with the temperature spike this allowed the coolant flow to open up. This type of thermostat won t cure your cooling problem; but if you need to get home this can buy you some time, until you can get your car to a repair shop. I drove the Grand Am 25 miles home to Geneseo, great I made it home! The next day I called to work, sorry I won t be in to work today. Now what am I going to do? I need to get this car repaired quickly. I am facing a 4 month layoff from Deere for paint system upgrades. Money is going to be tight; this repair job is going to be expensive. I talked to a couple of shops, but their booked up. I stopped at the local GM dealership and got a price quote. The service manager started to tell me all the horror stories about my car, warped heads, bearing wiped out from coolant in the oil, and having to evac the A/C system. I dared to ask what is this going cost me. His reply was $1800 without cylinder heads, if the heads are warped. Replacement cylinder heads will cost $800 a piece. I was just about ready to bite the bullet and let them do the work. I needed to get my car fixed quickly, this is my daily driver. About that time a mechanic friend of mine Dave Gradertt came into the shop. I said, Dave how many warped 3.4 L cylinder have worked on? Dave said very few, it is a rare occasion to have one warp that bad. I told Dave thank you for your advice, this I am sure did not make the service manager happy. I told both of them I am going to roll the dice and hope it is just a blown head gasket. My computer code scanner was showing a misfire on the #2 cylinder. I pretty sure this is the problem. I bought the parts from my local CAR QWEST parts store, and started to drive to Andover, IL. The car is really running bad now a real lack of power, the temperature was going up and down. Cruisin Tiger member Tim Smith helped me out by letting me use his new garage. A big thank you Tim! Well I finally got the cylinder removed, sure enough bulged metal ring around the gasket I found the problem. The surface of the head looked okay as well as the block. I checked both the cylinder head and block for warp age with a straight edge. This was fine, it was in spec. When I knew what the problem was, I had no problems putting the engine back together. I rolled the dice on this repair job and came out a winner. What could have cost me up $3400, only cost me $416. I beat the odds again, I try to do car repairs myself whenever I can. It is a rare occasion for me to take any of my cars to a repair shop. The down side of this all is the fact that I had to pull my 1999 Trans am out of winter storage. I needed this car to drive until the Grand Am repairs were finished. It must have rained 2 inches here on February 20 th, so it washed all the salt off the roads. The other side of this coin was all that rain flooded roads going to Tim s Garage. I did drive through some flood waters, I assure my Trans Am is okay. After all this I still like cars.

After the editor informs her that the fee for the obituary is 50 cents a word, she pauses, reflects and then says, "Well, then, let it read 'Fred Brown died'." Confounded at the woman's thrift, the editor stammers that there is a seven word minimum for all obituaries. The woman pauses again, counts on her fingers and replies, "In that case, 'Fred Brown died: 1983 Pick-up for sale'."
