Tiger Tales By Ken Smith I m so excited I could just well, you fill in the blank! By the time you have this month s issue in your hot little hands, I ll be terrorizing the neighborhoods again! My 64 is currently getting a motor rebuild (it took up smoking about half way through last season) and well I m so excited! Now before anyone calls me up or sends an to the GTOAA about what pain in the posterior I am to this hobby, let me explain once again that I am a little more mature than most people believe. So NYAH NYAH NYAH! This is the second extended time of being away from my baby (my daughter hates me saying that cause she always thought SHE was my baby.) The first time was before I joined the Cruisin Tigers and then I had to wait until the middle of July. Getting my car back is like your first bite of Christmas fudge or... winning an office pool or... meeting someone you admire like Arnie Beswick or Jim Wangers or... GETTING MY CAR BACK! YIP- This month I decided that I need to find more room for upcoming cruise nights and car shows, so what better place than my column. So here are some events to mark on your calendars May 18 O Fallon City Park in O Fallon, IL 8 AM to 4 PM $15 ( ) May Years of General Motors Cruise Night in Downers Grove, IL June 14 Hospice of Grundy County Cruise Night at Route 47 and Washington in Morris, IL 6 PM to 9 PM June 21 Mt Prospect Cruise Night at Route 14 & Route 83 (GTO Night) We can caravan from our meeting! However, he had the help of photos taken by Mark Grimmenga. Additional photos from that Saturday are on page 15. If you missed this year s birthday, don t do the same next year it will be our 20th birthday! Third Saturday of April 2009 mark your calendar now!

Presidents Page Jim Stern President s Page - Jim Stern May, 2008 S T A Y T U N E D Wow, It s May Already! Can Cruisin be far off? This year I d like to see us do much more gang cruisin. That s when 6, 8, 10 or more Cruisin Tigers gather down the street then descend on a cruise location in formation. All we need is a coordinator! YOU? BOPC Swap: Once again this year we participated in the Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac & Cadillac indoor swap meet at the DuPage County Fair Grounds in Wheaton, IL. As you can see (right), we put our new club banner to good use and, as usual, drew crowds with our continuously running burnout video s. A word of thanks to Mark Grimmenga for assembling the latest version of our video DVD and to Ken Smith for bringing, setting up and manning the video equipment all day Sunday. This event is as much social as swap meet and there are always goodies ready to suck dollars out of your wallet (example, have you ever seen so many great looking Pontiac tripower set ups in one place at one time)? Thank you Ken Smith and Jim Martino for helping Mary Jo and me with set up on Saturday evening. And Mark Grimmenga, Bob Zeiger, Paul Weinstein, Sylvia Heidlauf and Randy Ray for helping staff our table on Sunday. The contributions of Ginny s Trucking Service are also appreciated. Participation: Walter Annenberg is quoted as having said: I shall participate, I shall contribute, and in so doing, I will be the gainer. A fancy way to say - get involved and you ll get more than you give. Your club is currently in need of: club 20th anniversary committee staff members, a Tigers for Kids administrator and a cruise coordinator. This publication is seeking reporters to cover tech subjects, upcoming events and to submit stories of roads traveled (favorite drive routes). Our only contact with approximately 80% of our members is this publication. Let s work to make it an even better read. Contact me, I m sure it s not too late! Our May Meeting Theme Is Photography: Show us your favorite auto related photo s, could be your ride or one you spotted and snapped at a cruise or show. Member and professional photographer, Dave Smolarek, can not attend but with tips from him and Tom Szymczyk, Editor of The Legend, I will hopefully be able to do an adequate job of presenting picture taking does & don ts. Also on the agenda will be Sam Mancuso of United Cerebral Palsy - Will County. Sam wants to thank us for again selecting them to be our 2008 Show charity benefactor and show us pictures of what they have been able to do with our contributions. We had great attendance last month, let s do it again! I look forward to seeing you on Saturday the 17th. Support your Club - contribute, shop with our sponsors, attend meetings & STAY TUNED! Send Comments, Criticisms & Suggestions To: president08@cruisintigersgto.com

April Chapter Meeting Minutes By Sylvia Heidlauf (A note from the secretary: If I have missed anything from this meeting, such as the monthly report numbers it is because in my blondeness, I accidentally erased the April meeting minutes. Ooops! I apologize for the briefness of these minutes, but sometimes stuff happens. Sorry.) The meeting started at 4:00PM at Mr. Beef and Pizza. There were 58 members in attendance. The club celebrates their 19th year. Pam Pulizze made a beautiful birthday cake. We had 7 GTO's, 1 LeMans and 1 Solstice at the meeting. New members in attendance I forgot. Randy Ray gave some information regarding different swap meets and car shows in the area. Our first candidate for What's My Line was Steve Lucas. He explained how he came to be at General Motors and showed us the different size welding rods that they use for welding. Next up was Sylvia Heidlauf. She told about finishing up 10 years of being a school bus driver, and her experiences with the many children throughout the years. Lastly was Randy Ray. He gave us his story with slide visuals on what he does at International. He was working in the school bus division, but has recently transferred to the engine building division. We then had the original remaining club members get desk top calcualors as a thank you for starting this wonderful club. The original members were and are, Dennis Parus, Larry Wyzukovicz, Ric Murphy, Davis Wyzukovicz, Jim Zeivel, Terry Weiner and Jeff Hill. Unfortunately, two have since passed. A few members remembered some old times and the fun they had. We then had pizza thanks to the club treasury. The 50/50 was pulled the winner was Mike Hill with $ The "You Gotta Be Here" was won by Bob & Sharon Bruzek for $ Unfortunately they were not here. The meeting ended approximately 5:30PM Rich Heidlauf' s Tech Tip for a Big Ooops!!! While getting Sylvia's 70 together for the High School Class Racing, a certain family member, who shall remain nameless (Hint: He's 16 with blonde hair and looks like Sylvia and is a sophomore at Warren H.S.), dropped the car off the jack onto the oil pan. With the car still incomplete and the fun of installing headers already done, we weren't looking forward to pulling the engine out again. The pan was flat against the oil pump pickup tube and had a small split where the oil pump went through. After some thought, (wrench still stuck in the overhead door), I had the idea of pulling the dent in the pan. I welded a 3/8 nut to a washer (for more surface area), and threaded an 8" piece of 3/8 threaded rod with a small weight from a barber set, with some fender washers and a nut on the bottom which equals a make shift slide hammer. After 3 easy blows down, the dent popped out. While the pan isn't straight as new, we didn't have to pull the engine to take off the pan to hammer Have you wondered about the kind of brain trust that goes into establishing an organization of the magnitude of the Cruisin Tigers? Well, stop thinking about it and look at five of the original seven people that started the ball rolling (from left to right) Jeff Hill(CT#7), Terry Weiner (CT#6), Dennis Parus (CT#1), Ric Murphy (CT#3) and Larry Wyzukovicz (CT#2). The camera shy founding fathers are Jim Zeivel (CT#5) and David Wyzukovicz (CT#4). This photo was sent in by Terry Weiner. He said this is dated circa You guys make us all proud. This is a great organization.

St. Charles is located in the great Fox Valley with the scenic Fox River running through it. It is about one hour due west of Chicago and there is a Metra train station in the area if you desire to go downtown Chicago. Along with our host hotel, there are a number of hotel/motels within a couple of miles of the show field. There are many restaurants to accommodate every taste and plenty of shopping in both indoor and outdoor malls. The adjoining city of Geneva, is famous throughout the Chicagoland area for its antique shops. There are plenty of activities for both children and adults, and are too numerous to mention in this article. The best way to see what's available is to go to the St.Charles Visitor's Bureau web site and you will be able to click your way through all the activities and events in the area, along with any other information you may want. Why not come in on a Friday and make it a weekend? If you want any recommendations, you can me at baratono2004@aol.com. Hope to see you here.

Tips For Tigers (Taking Your Car Out Of Storage) By Jim Martino Many knowledgeable car people may not even be familiar with the term NOS, which stands for New Old Stock. This term is given to parts that are auto parts from the original (automobile/ motorcycle/tractor/ etc) manufacturer for repair or reconditioning on their originally sold product. Sounds confusing, but really is not. You see AC/Delco, AC, Rochester, Delco-moraine, and several other manufacturers were all part of the original GM network (owned by GM), and all of these companies supplied back to the parent company(s) (Chevrolet, Olds, Pontiac, Olds, GMC) for parts required to make the new cars being delivered to dealers. These companies also were responsible for supplying parts (at a profit) to the companies dealerships to repair the new cars, should they be involved in an accident, warranty, or in need of a repair by aftermarket shops. The old rule of thumb for manufacturers were to be able to stock parts for vehicles for between years past their initial production (purists might say it was more, but work with me in this case), so AC/Delco needed to be able to supply a 1970 GTO ignition switch to a dealership that required one as recently as If the dealer bought one of these ignition switches (in 1970), but never used it, and then tried to return the part to GM in 1986, GM was under no obligation to take the return from the dealer, as the time had elapsed for GM's "responsibility" to produce parts for the continued operation of the new 1970 GTO.. Thus a "new old stock" part is at a dealer with no use for it. These parts were sold by the dealer to private citizens to help lower their inventory costs, and they would rather get something from the part rather than throwing the obsolete product out. (A new industry is born with the "reseller" of NOS parts; see e- Bay motors for listings from people who buy out entire dealerships) Nothing fits like an original part, and although more expensive, NOS parts are superior to reproduction parts in many cases. If buying an NOS part, you need to see if it is in the original wrapper, as many of these parts are now reproduced, and sold as NOS on e-bay with the disclaimer NOS-NEW, this means that somebody has duplicated the old part, sometimes with inferior methods or materials, and are claiming the part to be NOS. Many of these parts are of decent quality, but if they are reproduced by 40 year old dies or molds, the molds may not be as "crisp" as they were when manufactured new, as these dies or molds age with use, like everything else, and you may wind up with a body panel that does not have a crisp line to it, or an emblem that does not have well-defined edges. Another example would be an emblem that is now applied to a car with an adhesive backing vs. the original pin type of attachment. If a person is doing a nice cruiser for their own personal enjoyment, it might be an intelligent decision to buy some reproduction pieces to keep the cost low, but if you are truly trying to return your car to it's as delivered state, and/ or have a rare car, it is prudent to depend on the NOS parts to restore these cars. The low cost (reproduction) emblem might be the first thing to fail on that gorgeous frame off restoration, and it can be very frustrating chasing these little details on a car you just paid an enormous amount of money to restore. - OEM Manufacturer (FORD, GM, CHRYSLER etc) - Original car/part manufacturer - NOS - New Old Stock. Part made by OEM manufacturer, licensee, or subsidiary. - NOS-NEW- A new part made to replace discontinued parts, in many cases under license from the original manufacturer. Many times these are of higher quality than the "repopped" parts. They can be exceptional (See Goodmark body panels, Gardner Exhaust etc), but many false starts from early imported products have tainted the reputation of many products. - Reproduction (Repop) - Any part not made by or licensed by the original manufacturer. There are various manufacturers of widely varying degrees of skill and quality. These can be accurate (good with no problems) to (junk) ill fitting inferior panels that take longer to correct, than trying to find an NOS panel. You may be buying a fender for your Mustang from a manufacturer that is paid by the piece to produce product. (No quality assurance). Keep in mind that these products in many cases are not packaged correctly to assure a damage free ride as well. I do not pretend to know all the answers, but hopefully I have waded through some questions, as I get this question regularly when I list parts for sale. I am not necessarily against reproduction products, but I want people to realize that sometimes you may have "unfulfilled" expectations, on those products, as compared to the original NOS product. Hope this helps...

A charitable contribution from the proceeds of our show will go to.. United Cerebral Palsy s Reedswood Day School program of Joliet will receive a charitable contribution from The Indian Uprising. The donation will go towards certain items that they badly need. The Reedswood School provides a comprehensive day school program with an entire range of therapies and an intensive medical support component. Currently, there are 58 children enrolled in the school with a maximum capacity of 60. Children ages 3 to 21 attend this program. In addition to their primary diagnosis of profound developmental disability (cerebral palsy, as well as the entire spectrum of neurological diagnosis) a significant number of the children have additional serious medical problems which results in their nurturing and education being much more involved (as well as often more costly). The club has allocated a large sum of money towards The UCP. In addition, The Cruisin Tigers will continue a tradition of adopting several needy families at Christmas time with funds raised by our show. Please help with a donation. When registering for the show, feel free to add an additional amount to the registration fee. It doesn't go unnoticed. Thank you for your support!!! Even though it was a brisk April day we had classic and new-gen GTOs (and other Pontiacs) in the parking lot. And our President Jim Stern apparently felt the spring chill as Jane Lucas had to find him a blanket. Not really, she was explaining the history of this club quilt. If you haven t attended a club meeting lately, do so. It a great way to meet fellow Pontiac enthusiasts and exchange ideas. See you soon.
