1 Lake Sands District Pinewd Derby Derby Car Specificatins fr Cub Scuts and Yuth Open Length, Width and Clearance: Width Maximum verall width, including wheels and axles, shall nt exceed 2-3/4 inches. Minimum width between the wheels shall be 1-3/4 inches s the car will clear the center guide strip. Maximum length shall nt exceed 7.0 inches (be advised that sme kits cntain blcks f pine which are lnger and must be cut in advance t meet this standard). Minimum clearance between the bttm f the car and the racing surface shall be 3/8 inch t allw clearance fr the center guide strip. Maximum height shall nt exceed 2-3/4 inches. This specificatin will allw the car t pass under a timing device in an unrestricted fashin. Wheelbase (distance between the frnt and rear axles) may nt be changed frm the kit bdy distance f 4-3/8 inches. Wheels and Axles: Only wheels and axles frm the fficial Pinewd Derby kit may be used. Wheels may be smthed t remve mld bumps and incnsistencies. The tread may nt be mdified t enhance its perfrmance and must be a cmpletely flat surface. Beveling, ruting, tapering, perfrating r any ther significant altering f the shape and perfrmance f the wheels is prhibited. The tread width must nt be narrwed beynd its riginal width. Axles and wheels may nly be deburred, lightly sanded and plished and still cnfrm t race specificatins. Axles may nt be bent, drawn, r therwise distrted. Wheel bearings, washers r bushings are prhibited. This includes wheel cvers r hubcaps which serve t keep the wheel hubs frm cntacting the car bdy and serve as a lubricatin well r tap. The car must be free-wheeling with n starting device r ther prpulsin such as adhesives, magnets, rubber bands, mtrs, jets, etc. Metal frame(s) and axle supprt(s) are prhibited. Axles must be munted directly int the wd slts prvided in the car bdy. Axles may nt be jined tgether with any device and the fur independent axels must be clearly visible in the slts prvided in the bttm f the car. *NOTE* The Grand Prix Pinewd Derby Axle Guard can be used since it is an fficially licensed prduct f the BSA. Hwever the 'Axle Guard' must be installed s that it can be remved fr inspectin by judges if necessary fr axle verificatin Weight and Appearance: Weight may nt exceed 5.0 unces. The readings f the fficial race scale will be cnsidered final. Five (5.00) unces will be determined by the fficial race scales n the day f the race. Every effrt will be made t assure that the digital scales are reliable and accurate. The imprtant pint is that all will race accrding t the same standard. Please keep this in mind while weighing yur vehicle n ther scales. The car may be carved, sculpted r sanded in rder t enhance its perfrmance and/r appearance as lng as the car cntinues t meet the size restrictins fr the race. N lse materials f any kind are permitted n r inside the car. The car bdy may have n mving parts. Weights shall be passive, i.e. nn-mveable. Paints/decals/decratins may be added t alter the appearance and/r aerdynamics f the car. Glue may be used t adhere the axels t the car bdy. Axels cannt be active, meaning they cannt be part f any suspensin system. Wd putty, r a similar substance, may be used t repair minr damage t the car. Indented nses are prhibited. Cars shaped like the ne pictured will stage further dwn the track and thus are nt traversing the same distance as the ther cars. A mdificatin t the car will be requested during inspectin t ensure it will start the race with the nse n the starting gate. Lubricatin: Only dry pwdered lubricants, such as graphite r white pwder Pinewd Derby Car lubricant, may be used. Oils and silicne sprays can ful the track and are prhibited. 5 Lake Sands District Pinewd Derby Eligibility: Cars and Cntestants The Lake Sands District Champin cmpetitin is pen t all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Lake Sands District Pack Champins frm each den (Tiger, Wlf, Bear, Webels I, and Webels II). Alternates can be chsen in each categry at the Pack level in the event a scut is unwilling r unable t participate at the District event. The Lake Sands District Open cmpetitin is pen t all ther Scuts wh are nt eligible t cmpete in the District Champin cmpetitin and their family members. There will be 2 events, Cub Scuts and/r siblings (up thrugh 11 years ld) and Adults (12 years ld and up). Cars in this cmpetitin must have been cnstructed fr this race seasn and must be cnstructed with parts cntained in the SA Official Grand Prix Pinewd Derby Car kit (#17006). Kits frm previus years and frm nn-fficial retailers may cntain parts that are nt sanctined and may be judged as ineligible. Registratin will take place the day f the race. There will be n registratin fee this year. Scuts must be in unifrm t race. If the Scut des nt have a field unifrm ( Class A ) a utility ( Class B usually a pack t-shirt) unifrm is acceptable. Scuts will cmpete against thers in the same rank. Racing will ccur in five classes: Tiger, Wlf, Bear, Webels I, and Webels II. It is expected that the scut be present t enter his car in the cmpetitin. In the case f illness r a valid cnflict, an absent scut may be represented by an authrized prxy defined as a sibling, a Cub Scut f similar age wh is nt already cmpeting in the same set f heats, r ne f their Pack s Leaders. Prxy authrizatin must be btained prir t the race by the Lake Sands District Race Chairman. Awards: Trphies will be presented t the First, Secnd, and Third place fr each scut rank in the District Champin cmpetitin. A Grand Champin award will als be presented t the verall champin. The Grand Champin cmpetitin will be held at the cnclusin f all f the rank cmpetitins t determine the Grand Champin. Inspectins and Disputes: Each car must pass inspectin by the Official Inspectin Team befre it may cmpete. The Inspectin Team has the right t disqualify thse cars that d nt meet the rules. Car wners will be infrmed f the vilatins and given an pprtunity t mdify the car t meet these rules. Mdificatins must be successfully cmpleted prir t the end f the race inspectin perid. A pst-race inspectin will be held t ensure the car meets the Derby Car Specificatins utlined earlier. If it is determined the car des nt meet the specificatins it will be disqualified and the final results will be mdified as needed. Ungentlemanly r un-sprtsmanlike cnduct by any participant r member f the audience will be grunds fr expulsin frm the cmpetitin and/r race area. Track fficials are respnsible fr the prper cnduct f the cmpetitin. The decisins f these Officials n questins f rule interpretatins and prcedure may be appealed t the event Chairman, but the Chairman s decisins n all matters are final. Cnduct f the Races: The racing frmat will cnsist f several heats. An equal number f races will be run n each f 2 lanes t minimize any discrepancies between the racing surfaces f each lane. Fr all events, the car with the lwest average time, r fastest average speed, shall be declared victr. In the event f a tie, a tiebreaker race will be held t determine the winner. 6 Lake Sands District Pinewd Derby Car handling respnsibility will fall slely upn the scut r car wner wh will be respnsible fr retrieving the car at the finish and returning the car t the pit area after the heat has been run. A scut r car wner with physical limitatins may nminate a prxy subject t the apprval f the Track Master. Grund Rules: If a car leaves a track, the heat will be run again. If the same car leaves the track a secnd time, it will autmatically lse that heat. If a car suffers a mechanical prblem and a repair can be accmplished within 5 minutes, the heat will be run again. If nt, the car will autmatically lse the heat. Anyne wh picks up a car frm the pit area withut authrizatin by the race fficials, regardless f whse car was picked up, will be disqualified frm the races and/r asked t leave the event at the discretin f the fficials. NOTE: Repairs are the ONLY thing that can be made t the car. Yu are NOT allwed t apply lubricants r perfrm adjustments t the car. If yu d s yu will be autmatically disqualified.
