Chapter Theory of Operation LDXRTB The LDXRTB will automatically adjust itself for the width and height of the box to be sealed. With the machine started, a box is placed on the infeed pack table. The box is moved forward until photoelectric sensor PE is triggered. The triggering of PE will energize solenoid valve SV which will cause the side rails to travel inward centering the box on the pack table and holding it in place. The operator is able to fill the box with product and fold the top flaps of the box down. While holding the top flaps down the operator pushes the box forward until the leading panel of the box contacts the sensing paddle. When the sensing paddle is depress it contacts an air limit switch which in turns supplies pilot air pressure to solenoid valve V. When valve V is energized, the top head assembly will begin to travel upward until the front sensing paddle is no longer being held in by the front panel of the box. Now the operator can push the box into the machine under the top drive assembly. (Note: always hold the top flaps of the box down at the rear of the box to avoid accidental entrapment with the top drive assembly) The top drive assembly will lower down on top of the box and will propel it through the machine. As the box moves off photoelectric sensor PE the side rail solenoid valve, SV will deenergize and the side rails will open to their home position. The box will travel through the tape cartridges and tape will be applied to the box. The box will exit the machine and the top head assembly will lower down to its home position. 0

Key design features: The LDXRTB incorporates an adjustable bracket for photoelectric sensor PE. The bracket allows various positions to trigger the side rails inward. By mounting the bracket closer to the infeed of the machine, the side rails will close on to a greater amount of the side panels of the box. This position is optimal if the operator is loading product into the box before sealing it. By mounting the photoelectric sensor at the beginning of the pack table the side rails will close in sooner as the box is moved toward the infeed of the machine. This position is optimal if the box is already filled and the flaps are folded. The operator can advance the box and the side rails will center it, as the box is moving. The LDXRTB incorporates a box overstuffed switch. This switch is located on the bottom side of the top head assembly. As a box is fed into the machine, the top head drive assembly lowers down on top of it. The overstuff switch is depressed in ward. This action eliminates any chances of the sensing paddle retriggering causing the head to rise while the box is being processed. Typically, an overstuffed box can retrigger the sensing paddle and the head will raise causing poor tape application or a box jam. The overstuff switch nulls out the sensing paddle while it is activated. The LDXRTB incorporates an adjustable top head assembly limiter. The head limiter controls the minimum height of the top head assembly at rest. (The starting point) The head limiter allows for more through put speed by limiting how far the top head assembly travels before it clears the height of the box to be processed. For example if the minimum box height to be processed is 0 inches, the head limiter can be set at.. By setting the limiter, the head only travel downward to the. position after each box. The LDXRTB incorporates a movable control station. The control station can be placed to any metal surface of the machine.

This versatility allows the operator to place the controls of the machine at the best position for them The LDXRTB incorporates uniform lock capability on the head and side rails assembly on the machine. The top head and side rail assemblies can be locked at a specific position to process a batch of same size boxes. The assemblies can be locked in either tandem or individually dependant on need. This increases the throughput of the machine since it does not have to wait for the machine to adjust to the box. The LDXRTB incorporates a maintained manual head raising toggle switch. This switch allows the head to be raised without the machine running. With the machine stopped and the emergency stop switches extended, the head can be raised. This is convenient when refilling the bottom tape cartridge or box jam clearing. (Note: never enter under the machines top head assembly, without locking the upper head assembly with the lock knob.) Optional feature: The LDXRTB can be fitted with the high speed option to increase throughput. The option consists of increased belt speed from ft/ min to ft/min. and a head raise dampening circuit. The head raise dampening circuit limits the amount of over travel the top head assembly will experience as it senses the height of the box. The top head assembly travels upward as the sensing paddle is depressed. As it raises it is building up speed. Even when the sensing paddle is released, the head will continue to travel upward until its momentum ends. The dampening circuit is triggered when the sensing paddle is released and the cylinder exhaust blocking valves are closed for a short period to counter act the upward momentum of the top head assembly.

Machine Components Chapter Control Station The control station consist of an electrical enclosure, push pull mushroom head emergency stop switch and a momentary start pushbutton. The control station has two magnets on the back side of it which allows the operator to locate the machine controls to best fit their position at the machine. ESTOP START

Pneumatic regulators The regulators optimize the machine for the customers specific needs. Regulators R and R control the top head lifting movement while R controls the side rails. Regulator R controls the head lifting pressure and is normally set to 0 psi. Lowering the air pressure will make the top head assembly move upward sluggishly. Increasing the pressure will make the head travel upwards quickly. However; by increasing the pressure the head over travel will increase and actually decrease through put. Regulator R controls the downward force the top head assembly will exert on to the top of the box when it contacts it. By decreasing the pressure, the head will have more downward force on the box, which is desirable for overfilled conditions. Increasing the pressure will lessen the top head assembly downward force, which is desirable for voided boxes. Note: too much pressure may inhibit the top assembly from lowering downward or may cause box staling due to the top belts from not contacting the box with enough drive. Regulator R controls the pressure that the side rails center and hold the box. By increasing the pressure the side rails can center heavier boxes on the pack table. By increasing the pressure the side rails have more clamping force which makes it more difficult to advance a box into the machine. Lowering the pressure is desirable when processing light boxes. Be careful not to lower the pressure too much, this will cause the side rails not to fully travel inward. R R R

Top drive assembly The top drive assembly consist of a / hp gear motor, sprockets, chain and endless, guided, rough top belting. The top drive assembly, assist in conveying the box forward through the machine. The top drive assembly insures that tall unstable boxes will not topple over as they process through the machine. The endless rough top belt has an integral guide rib on the back of it. This guide eliminates any sophisticated apparatus to track the belt. The endless belt feature has increased longevity over conventional laced belting. MOTOR ESTOP DRIVE BELT

Bottom drive assembly The bottom drive assembly consist of a / hp gear motor, sprockets, chain and endless, guided, rough top belting. The bottom drive assembly is the main driver in conveying the box forward through the machine. The bottom drive assembly insures that boxes will travel through the machine without stalling The endless rough top belt has an integral guide rib on the back of it. This guide eliminates any sophisticated apparatus to track the belt. The endless belt feature has increased longevity over conventional laced belting. DRIVE BELT DRIVE MOTOR

Sensing paddle assembly The sensing paddle assembly, consist of two air switches and a single electric limit switch. The sensing paddle primary function is to measure the height of the box as it at the infeed of the machine. When the sensing paddle is depressed inward by the leading panel of the box, air switch AS opens and air flows to valve V. V in turn fills the head lifting cylinders which causes the top head assembly to travel upward. When the top head assembly raises higher than the box to be processed, air switch AS releases and the head will start to travel downward on top of the box to be processed. The second air limit switch AS works in conjunction with AS to eliminate any false head raise triggering. When a box is travelling under the top head assembly into the machine, it is passing under the headsensing paddle. If the top of the box inadvertently contacts the sensing paddle without AS the head would raise up again and cause taping or jamming issues in the machine. Air limit switch AS nulls out air switch AS when it is triggered. AS is located under the top drive assembly at the infeed of the machine just behind the sensing paddle. Air switch AS is the manual head raise switch. The electrical limit switch LS is an optional device, which is part of the highspeed option. The function of LS is to signal when the front panel of the box releases the sensing paddle. The electrical signal is fed to a one shot logic module with time delay. The logic module turns off the head lifting cylinders exhaust blocking valves. This reduces the amount of over shoot that the top head assembly would normally travel. By stopping the top head assembly up momentum abruptly the machines box cycle time is reduced.

AS LS AS AS Electrical enclosure assembly The electrical enclosure assembly is located inside the frame of the machine behind side panel. The enclosure is located next to the air pressure regulator. Inside the electrical enclosure are fuses, contactors, overload relays and terminal blocks. The devices selected protect the machine from short circuit and overload conditions.

ELECTRICAL ENCLOSURE Pack table assembly The pack table assembly consists of conveyor rollers, photoelectric sensor and works in conjunction with the side rails. The pack table design allows it to be used as a platform to fill a box on and then be able to convey it to the infeed of the machine. The photoelectric sensor PE is mounted under the pack table with is sensing area pointed up through the rollers of the table. The photoelectric sensor is triggered when the box is rolled over the top of it. The side rails will travel inward and center and hold the box in place. With the box being held in position an operator can fill it without the box moving around. When the box is filled the top flaps must be folded down and pushed up against the sensing paddle. Once the box enters the machine the photoelectric sensor will be cleared and the side rails

will open completely. The position of the sensor can be changed to allow the side rails to be triggered either earlier or later. SIDE RAILS PE CONVEYOR ROLLERS ADJUSTABLE BRACKET 0

Part and Instruction Manual Loveshaw Pressure Sensitive Tape Cartridge CAC0 wide tape CAC wide tape This is a combined manual for the CAC0 wide tape and the CAC wide tape. Take care when ordering parts. Make sure it is for the correct width cartridge. For stainless steel cartridge parts add the suffix SS to the part numbers depicted in the assembly drawings.

Theory of Operation: Pressure sensitive tape is applied to the corrugated box as it passes by the cartridge. The box will contact the front arm roller which has pressure sensitive tape adhesive side facing outward towards the oncoming box. The front leading side of the box will contact the front roller arm and the tape will adhere to the box. As the box continues to move forward the front roller arm and knife arm will be rotated into the frame of the cartridge. The amount of force exerted on the box as tape is being applied is adjustable by changing the position of the main spring. The front arm initial application force can be set to accommodate the strength of the box as well as the sturdiness of the contents in the box. As the front arm application roller transitions from the leading panel of the box to the top major flaps a separate wipe down spring is engaged. The sole purpose of this spring is to add speed to the rear wipe roller actuation to insure the rear tape tab is completely wiped to the rear trailing panel of the box. At this time the knife arm is retracted into the cartridge and the knife blade guard is fully retracted uncovering the blade. As the knife arm rotated into the cartridge the knife activation spring extends, generating cut force. As the box proceeds pass the cartridge the front arm roller will no longer contact the major flaps of the box, but the rear wipe roller will still contact the major flaps. Eventually as the box travels the knife arm will completely stop contacting the major flaps of the box. This will allow the knife arm to travel back towards its home position allowing the knife blade to puncture and cut through the tape. As the box continues move the rear wipe arm roller will no longer contact the major flaps of the box. This will allow the wipe arm roller to spring out of the cartridge and contact the rear tab length of tape and press against the trailing panel of the box. The rear wipe arm roller booster spring starts the wipe and the main cartridge spring finishes the wipe sequence. The box travelling pass the cartridge is the vehicle which pulls the tape through the cartridge. The cartridge is design to run most pressure sensitive tapes with no required adjustments. However in some cases it may be necessary to adjust tape tensions. The cartridge will operate at speeds up to 0 feet/minute.

Important Safety Notices: Before installing operating or servicing the tape cartridges read carefully and understand the following precautions: Never service the tape cartridges when installed in an operating machine. Use lock out / tag out protocols before installing or removing cartridges from machinery. Do not bypass or remove safety guard on knife blade. Observe caution when near tape cartridge knife. The knife blade is protected by a locking cover which is held closed by the link bar. Never make any adjustments to the tape cartridges when installed in an operating machine.

Tape Threading: The first step is to place the tape roll, on the cartridge exspandable tape core. Rotate the tape tension arm clockwise until it locks in place in its fully open position. (refer to figure ) The tape core diameter is adjustable by turning the adjustor nut. Turning the adjustor nut c.w. the core diameter increases and turning it c.c.w. the tape core diameter decreases. Decrease the tape core enough in order to place the tape roll on the core. Now turn the adjustor nut clockwise until the tape roll is snuggly held. (refer to figure) Tape roll must be placed on tape core with adhesive side of tape facing to the right. Refer to figure and for proper orientation. Figure Figure Adhesive side Adjustor nut Continue threading the tape over the upper and lower white tension arm rollers. Threading arrows are installed throughout the tape path of the cartridge to aid in threading. The back of the tape, the non adhesive side rides against the front of the rollers. It is important to insure that the tape tension arm is not bent; since this will cause the tape not to track properly through the cartridge. Refer to figure.

Figure Tension arm upper roller Tension arm Tension arm lower roller Arm lock release The tape is then threaded around the knurled tape tension roller. The adhesive side of the tape contacts the knurled roller. Refer to figure. Figure Knurled tension roller

The tape is then threaded between black knurled roll and the tape guide plate. The adhesive side of the tape will contact the two tape guide rollers as it is pulled through the guide plate assembly until it is at rest on the front arm roller. The adhesive side of the tape will be facing away from the front arm roller. Refer to figure. Figure Black knurled roller Tape guide plate Tape guide rollers Front arm roller

Adjustments: Aligning tape : Aligning tape side to side with in the cartridge frame is done by changing the position of the tape core. This is done by first loosening the tape core locking screw with a mm hex key. Turn the tape core locking screw counter clockwise allowing for the desired amount of adjustment to be made. Now turn the tape core height adjusting nut until the desired result is obtained. By turning the tape core height adjusting nut clockwise the tape core height position will decrease moving the tape closer to the mill stand side of the cartridge. By turning the tape core height adjusting nut counter clockwise the tape core height position will increase. This will make the tape track further away from the mill stand. After each adjustment always tighten the tape core locking screw. Failure to do so will allow the tape core position to change as tape is being pulled of f the tape roll. Refer to figure Tape core height adjusting nut Figure Tape core height locking screw Tape core friction drag adjustor ring

Setting tape core drag: The tape core drag setting is factory set to not allow a full roll of tape to free wheel as tape is being pulled off it. The tape tension arm assembly automatically adjusts for the proper amount of tape tension to be applied as the tape roll diminishes in diameter as tape is applied. The drag setting may need to be adjusted if the tape cartridge is being operated at high speed or if the tape adhesive is causing the roll to over rotate as the tape it is being pulled of the roll. Refer to figure. Setting the knurled tension roller: The knurled tension roller is factory set to its minimum resistance setting. This setting works for all standard tape applications. The tension roller setting may need to be adjusted if a thick mill tape is being used. By increasing the tension it aids in cutting the tape. Refer to figure. Figure Tension roller adjustor nut Setting main spring tension: Setting the main spring tension is done by moving the end of the spring to a different preset position. The main spring tension is factory set to a mid position. The spring is set from lightest to stoutest dependant on the strength of the corrugated box and the fill of the contents. Void filled,

weak corrugated boxes would be set to the lightest setting while strong corrugated box with overfill would process better with the main spring set stronger. The main spring only effects the application and wipe rollers. Refer to figure. Strongest setting Figure Weakest setting Booster adjustment Main spring tension adjustment Main spring Booster spring Setting booster spring compression The booster spring aids in rear tab wipe. The booster spring preloads the wipe roller arm so when the trailing edge of the box releases the wipe roller the arm can travel out a higher rate of speed and contact the rear tab and secure it to the back panel of the box. The booster adjuster is

factory set to lightly engage when the front roller arm is completely retracted. The booster setting is adjusted stronger when the cartridge is operated at higher application speeds. Refer to figure. Setting the rear tab cut adjustor: The rear tab cut adjustor is factory set to operate at 0 to 0ft/min belt speed. If the cartridge is operating at higher speeds the adjustor would need to move in order to shorten the rear tab length. The adjustor only alters the rear tab length. The front tab length is fixed and cannot be adjusted. Refer to figure. Figure Decrease Increase Tab adjustor Front arm stopper adjustment: The front arm stop adjustment is factory set to insure that the front arm roller stays in contact with major flaps of the box. This allows for a tight tape seal across the horizontal length of the box. The adjustor does not 0

need to be adjusted for normal applications. In some cases it may be necessary to adjust the stop depending on the type of machine that the cartridge is being used in. If the cartridge is placed in a machine and the tape is not being applied to the major flaps with enough pressure an adjustment will be necessary. This will be evident by inspecting the box as it exits the machine. Normal symptoms include the tape bridging across the major flaps, or the tape bunching up on the major flaps after the tape was cut. Refer to figure 0. Figure 0 Front arm stopper Jam nut

Maintenance: Application / Wipe roller replacement: Roller replacement is a tool less procedure. Simply push down on retaining pin and slide roller off the shaft. Install new roller in opposite fashion. Take caution to install replacement roller with undercut facing toward arm away from retaining pin. Refer to figure. Figure Retaining pin Knife blade replacement: Knife blade replacement is a tool less procedure. Simply push down on release bar and pull knife blade out. Fold back the knife guard by first

rotating the front roller arm inward towards the rear wipe arm. Then rotate the knife guard back until the knife blade is fully exposed. While holding the knife guard open slowly release the front roller arm and allow it to extend outward. This will allow the knife guard locking mechanism to hold the knife guard open for easy blade replacement. The knife blades have open slots to allow for easy slide on / off replacements. The knife blade is notch for proper orientation of the blade. Refer to figure A and B. Oil Pad: Regularly lubricate oil pad with SAE #0 nondetergent oil. Never use penetrating type oil; this will dissolve the adhesive which secures the pad to the knife guard. Refer to figure A. Warning: Use extreme care when working near the knife blade.
