The younger UK division has focussed on developing the application of manifolds, in plumbing and heating systems, both wall hung radiator as well as underfloor heating systems. We are considered leaders in this specialist field. In recent years Emmeti UK have begun supplying other key underfloor heating componentry; this coupled with a state of the art pipe manufacturing division, makes Emmeti the perfect choice for underfloor heating and plumbing components. We sell only to trade customers including merchants, system houses and specialist companies nationwide who serve the needs of the rapidly growing underfloor heating market as well as the heating and plumbing sector. From our central warehouse located near Oxford we are able to offer delivery within a few days which is supported by weekly shipments from our manufacturing base in Italy. 6 Heating Manifolds Emmeti - Introduction Emmeti UK consider themselves now well experienced in the application of manifolds to plumbing and heating systems, and have CPD courses open to those who wish to explore deeper the many advantages. The advantages Heating manifolds, unlike today s common practice of non-manifold ring heating circuits, allow independent circuits thermally different to each other. This is because they supply flow and return water directly to each radiator, in a star pattern. This makes it easy to hydraulically balance each independent circuit. Taking into account pipe runs, the hot water is circulated to all the radiators at the same time. This avoids the balancing or sequencing issues with a non-manifold system, where one radiator can be producing maximum heat well before another has started. A more constant temperature across all manifolds circuits is maintained (providing the balancing is done correctly). Manifolds encourage the use of small diameter pipes, 10 mm or 12 mm, PB, PEX or Multilayer. This type of pipe is easy to handle and flexible. No further connections are required between the manifold and the radiator. The connectors on the radiator and on the manifold are mechanical. This means that there are far fewer joints in total and none at all which are concealed so leaks are kept to a bare minimum and because they are not concealed, relatively easy to locate and deal with. Manifold Types To make understanding the Emmeti range of heating manifolds easier, we have organised them into three simple types, matching each type to a heating system and controls to make the application clear. Type 1 (T1): These are for wall hung radiator (WHR) systems with a Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) and Lockshield valve (LS) on the radiator. Type 2 (T2): These are for either wall hung radiator or underfloor heating (UFH) systems. The manifold is fitted with an electrothermic valve and lockshield to control each circuit; this replaces for example the TRV and LS on a radiator. The electrothermic valves are controlled by a thermostat or programmable thermostat. Type 3 (T3): These are underfloor heating (UFH) systems only and have a temperature controller and pump to ensure that the water is at the correct temperature for the underfloor heating circuits. 7 Topway T2 Manifold System Heating manifolds T2 manifolds T2 manifolds can be used in heating applications not only for WHR Wall Hung Radiator or other heat emitter based systems but also for UFH underfloor heating/cooling systems using a separate low temperature heat source or mixing valve control set (like our T3 Control Set). For radiator based or perimeter heating systems time and temperature control is centralised at the manifold allowing individual room temperature control if required. No TRV is needed in the room itself which can be controlled by a room thermostat or programmable room thermostat. The thermostat is wired back to the manifold via a wiring centre which requires electrothermic heads on the return rail. This method is in compliance with Building Regulations Part L1 (conservation of fuel and power) and best practice GPG301, 302 and GIL 59 (CHeSS). The function of the TRV (temperature control) and the lockshield (balancing) are now integrated on the manifold. More importantly, the electrical interlock required by Building Regulations Part L1 is provided directly by the thermostats controlling room temperature. The individual time and temperature control allowed by Topway T2 manifolds would be connected as for radiator systems using a wiring centre and one thermostat or programmable thermostat per underfloor heating zone. The advantages This state of the art option is pre-assembled onto the bracket, making for quick and easy installation. It has an electrothermic body integrated for each return circuit, ready to be actuated by the electrothermic head. The electrothermic heads, via a wiring centre, are connected to the room thermostats located in each room or zone. The manifold includes lockshields on the flow rail, double regulating for individual circuit isolation, and manual setting of flow control for heat balancing per radiator. It also includes automatic air vents and drainoff (filling) points as standard, and a standard option with integrated flowmeters is also available. All of these reduce commissioning time, no longer having to physically move to each room or zone. Integrated functions Central control for distribution, manual isolation by circuit or by floor, commissioning of each zone by balancing, system air venting and automatic electrical flow isolation when a room is up to temperature. This also allows individual circuit purging. Optional functions Measuring of flow using flowmeters, allowing reading of dynamic flow during balancing. Measuring of temperature using thermostats integrated into the ball valves, one on the flow and one on the return rail. These aid installation by allowing the installer to verify the hot water is flowing, and how much, as well as what flow and return temperatures are being achieved. Differential pressure by-pass, to prevent pump wear and tear. Programmable room thermostats, with set back facility, for the individual zones or rooms. 8 Emmeti Product Focus Topway T2 Manifold System (continued) Product Focus - Heating Manifolds Individual room zoning Energy saving Installing this kind of system can save a significant amount of money on fuel bills. It is particularly appropriate for use with public access buildings, like offices, schools and hotels. However with the increasing emphasis on legislation to save energy in both new and existing homes, Emmeti T2 manifolds offer a cost effective solution to professional installers and specifiers in meeting today s more stringent requirements. Electrothermic actuation Electrothermic bodies are integrated into the return manifold, one per circuit. They are almost identical to TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valve) bodies. An electrothermic head is mounted on top, at 2nd fix or final commissioning. This in turn is wired to a wiring centre (linking in to the boiler, pump and wall mounted room thermostats), which in turn is wired to each room or zone wall thermostat. What happens The electrothermic heads and bodies behave the same as a two port zone valve in a traditional system. They also cost considerably less per circuit. You are effectively zoning your heating by rooms or small areas, allowing individual tailored temperature control. This means when a room or area gets up to temperature, the thermostat signals to the manifold electrothermic head (via the wiring centre), and that circuit is closed. This leaves the remaining circuits free to continue receiving heat. When all circuits have been actuated, closing flow to each, the wiring centre signals the pump (and boiler) to cease pumping (and providing heat). Room Thermostats can be either simple electromechanical, electronic, or more sophisticated digital combined time and temperature units. This allows you to choose the time period when you want the room to receive heat, and allows a choice of two temperatures (comfort and energy saving), the choice is dependant on time and use of the room. 14 Product Focus - T3 Controllers T3 UFH Control Sets Stand alone T3 control sets for underfloor heating applications with Topway T2 manifolds The advantages Emmeti UK offers a wide range of manifolds for underfloor heating applications catering for both residential and light commercial applications, in 1 and 1¼ sizes. To match this range of manifolds, Emmeti have introduced a new range of four control sets designed to provide a range of fixed and variable temperature solutions to meet each customers requirements. Each control set includes a mixing valve, circulating pump, built-in temperature gauge, mounting bracket and swivel joints for connection to the manifold assembly. We offer a solution, from a simple nonelectrical temperature management option to a full weather compensator package. These pre-packaged T3 control sets make the choice easier, and allow you to make your purchase more simply, involving less risk and less administration. The Pack design means all four controls are interchangeable if you need to change an element, you only replace this part, minimising heart ache, cost and downtime. The modular approach allows you to quickly and easily grasp what is the best technical solution for you in what may be a complex set of variables. In order to provide water at the right temperature for underfloor heating, a mixing valve is used to take heated water from a heat source and mix it with the return water from the underfloor system to the correct design temperature. Where the heat source can provide the right temperature by itself e.g. a low temperature boiler, then a T3 control set is not needed. Mixing water to the design temperature can be achieved either by using a thermostatic mixing valve to give a fixed temperature or a motorised valve which can give either a fixed or variable temperature. The Emmeti range has two thermostatic and two motorised mixing valves in the range. T3 UFH Control Sets Range As well as the mixing valve, the other key component is the circulating pump provided as an integral component of the control set. Our standard pump offering is the Grundfos UPS 25/60, with 130mm face to face dimension, 1½ male threaded connections, connected to union couplings for ease of replacement, and has a 3 speed setting. This pump is optimised to work with the temperature controller options we offer but it can be changed by you, providing the pump face to face dimension is taken into account. 16 Product Focus - T3 Controllers T3 UFH Control Sets (continued) Application sizing and requirements The tables below give an approximate indication of the capacity for the four manifolds in the Emmeti range of T3 control sets. Each table indicates the floor area that can be heated for the particular pipe size shown with the pipes spaced at 200mm between centres, a temperature drop of 7.5 o C between flow and return and using the pump supplied with the control set, a Grundfos UPS This simple guide shows the estimated floor area that can be covered with one control set, assuming the value of output in watts/ sq m. shown in the table. Three tables are shown each using a different pipe size 16mm x 2mm, 17mm x 2mm & 20mm x 2mm and the corresponding increase in floor area due to the use of the larger size. The pipes may be made from PEX (PE-Xa or PE-Xb) or PE-RT barrier pipe construction with an EVOH or aluminium oxygen barrier. It is not intended to take the place of a heat loss sizing calculation or heating design, only to assist the selection of the correct control set for the application required. Control Set Applications Note that the U and U have the same floor heating capacity due to their identical flow performance. However the U has an inbuilt electrothermic head which enable the control set to be electrically isolated making it particularly suitable for use in single zone applications or where high limit temperature protection is required. U & U each include a motorised mixing valve and a valve body with a higher flow capacity using the same pump as the two smaller sets. These can be used for fixed or variable temperature systems using either the options shown under the T3 UFH Control Set Accessories heading of this document which fit onto the valve body, with a separate weather compensator or with a Building Energy Management System (BEMS). Apart from the need to be comfortable and the convenience that a well controlled system brings, rising fuel prices make it essential that heating systems are well-controlled to ensure maximum economy. These requirements are also now built into the legal framework that all dwellings whether new or existing must comply with The Building Regulations and the guidance documents issued to support them (e.g. the Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide) now offer clear instructions for the zoning of underfloor heating and the necessity for time and temperature controls to provide a comfortable, economically run home or commercial environment. Zones and zone control A heating zone is part of a building with its own independent heating controls. Having underfloor heating with water filled pipes means that every heated room has at least one pipe circuit to heat it (larger rooms can have more than one circuit). Each circuit is connected to a manifold and can be switched on and off by means of a small electrical valve on the manifold (called an electrothermic valve). This means that every room can be controlled separately each room is a zone with its own zone controls. The Emmeti zone controls range includes a wide selection of thermostats to control temperature from simple dial operated types, electronic touchscreen versions to programmable thermostats which combine time and temperature control. Weather compensating controls allow the water to be reduced to this lower level but also varied within a suitable range to suit the outside weather conditions. For example, when it is cold outside the water is allowed to rise to the maximum permitted temperature for the floor system; when it is warmer outside the water temperature is reduced to a lower level to satisfy the reduced needs of the system. This means that the system both feels more comfortable and is also more economical as the heat source is used less to meet the lower water temperature in milder parts of the winter. Electrothermic heads An electrothermic head is the means of controlling the water flow through a manifold. They are always wired. They are designed to fit onto the valves which are built into T2 and T3 manifolds and are available for both 230V and 24V operation. They can also be supplied complete with an auxiliary switch (four wire) version to operate additional equipment or provide electrical interlock. Wireless Zone Controls In addition to the thermostats which need to be connected to electrical cables in order to be able to operate, Emmeti also has a range of wireless controls. These enable a system to have individual zones as before but without the need to connect the thermostats with cable back to the manifold. They are therefore ideal for conversion of existing properties or adding additional controls to an existing system. The outermost layer and the innermost layer are made from a form of polyethylene, in this case we use PE-RT. Between these two layers sits a core of aluminium, 0.2mm thick, held in place by a special adhesive on its inner and outer surface so that all five layers move as one. The use of a metal core has a number of advantages. It is impermeable to oxygen so oxygen cannot pass through the pipe and enter the water, which would result in corrosion inside the heating system. The metal core also allows the pipe to be formed by hand and retain this shape after forming. This means that it is one of the easiest pipes to bend yet requires very little securing particularly when used for underfloor heating as its weight is already supported on the insulation layer below. The aluminium core also restricts the overall expansion co-efficient of the pipe making it less prone to sagging so it can also be used where it can be seen. This type of pipe has a relatively high maximum temperature and pressure characteristics, operating temperature 70 o C and 10 bar and is suitable for a wide range of domestic and commercial applications. Five layer UFH barrier pipe This type also has 5 layers with an inner and outer layer of Polyethylene we use PE-Xb and PE-RT. Instead of an aluminium oxygen barrier, there is a layer of EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) which also prevents oxygen from passing into the water. To make up the 5 layers, an additional layer of adhesive is used on both sides of the EVOH layer to ensure all layers are stable when being formed during installation. This type of pipe is more elastic than the MLCP type and needs more securing as it will spring back after being bent unlike MLCP. The PE-Xb pipe has a temperature rating higher than MLCP, but a lower pressure rating of 6 bar which is suitable for heating applications in domestic and some light commercial applications The PE-RT pipe has a similar temperature rating of 70 o C and 4 bar which is not suitable for conventional radiator systems but is suitable for underfloor heating systems. Three layer UFH barrier pipe Using a simpler construction, it has an inner layer of PE-Xa, an adhesive layer and an outer oxygen barrier layer of EVOH. This gives the same temperature and pressure rating as the five layer pipe, 95 o C and 6 bar, and because it has fewer layers is usually slightly less expensive. Note All the above types are suitable for underfloor heating and those with a higher temperature rating can also be used for radiator systems. The exact choice of pipe is dependent on a number of factors price, application and installation method and each type will suit some of these factors to a different degree. The pipe sizes available from Emmeti have been carefully selected as the most commonly used for underfloor heating applications, from 15mm up to 20mm.
