Blackader, 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 05:00 August 8 th 1944, Nrrey-en-Bessin Caen has t be taken and as a preliminary t the assault yu have been rdered by Maj Gen Rd Keller cmmanding the 3 rd Infantry Divisin, t capture the village f Carpiquet and the adjacent airfield. This lies sme 3½ miles west f Caen city centre and its capture will utflank the German frces defending the nrthern suburbs f the city. This will frce them t withdraw suth ver the River Orne. Yu als nte that Carpiquet airfield will be a valuable prize fr Mntgmery wh needs additinal landing sites and is desperate t establish mre reliable air cver. Yu recgnise the perils f seizing an airfield. Yur tanks and infantry must advance ver an expanse f pen terrain which ffers a perfect killing grund fr the defenders. This will be made mre difficult given the recnnaissance reprts that the Germans have frtified the entire area with mines, wire, pillbxes and field emplacements. The assault will be made dubly difficult because yu will als be facing men frm the elite German 26 th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment frm 12 th SS Hitlerjügend Panzer Divisin. T minimise the expsure f yur trps yu plan t cnduct a flanking assault thrugh the twn f Carpiquet and then develp this int a right hk t seize the airfield s Cntrl buildings. Yu feel that this avids expsing yur trps t flanking fire frm the suthern part f the airfield. Yur plan is t lead the assault with the Nrth Shres, wh will assault the Nrthern part f Carpiquet village, whilst the Chauds attack the suthern end f the village and the airfield s Nrthern hangars. Bth these regiments will be supprted by tanks frm the Frt Gary Hrse and specialist AFVs fr 79 th Armured Divisin. Once these tw regiments have established a firm ldgement in Carpiquet village, yu will send the QOR, supprted by the final squadrn f Frt Gary Hrse, thrugh Carpiquet t seize the airfield cntrl, buildings t the east f the airfield. T neutralise the flanking fire frm the suth f the airfield Maj Gen Keller has attached the Winnipegs frm 7 th CIB t yur cmmand. This battalin will cnduct a pinning, diversinary attack thrugh Marcelet and nwards t the hangars situated n the suthern side f the airfield. Given that this is a diversinary attack it is nt intended t press it hme with armured supprt. Missin Capture and Hld the village f Carpiquet and the clse by airfield.

2 Canadian Deplyment, Ntes & Special Rules Deplyment and Reinfrcement Turn 1 Phase 2 Start f scenari. All phase 1 frces are deplyed either behind the Canadian Deplyment line r in Accelerated Advance t Cntact psitins n table t the nrth east f the blue German initial deplyment line and at least 5 distant frm that line if this ptinal rule is in frce. Phase 2 Frces will usually nly enter the table nce at least 3 victry lcatins (including at least ne f the 1 Victry lcatins in Carpiquet) have been taken by Canadian Frces. If Phase 2 Frces are requested r enter the table earlier than this csts the Canadians One Victry Pint. Discipline Rating All MEs are Experienced with the exceptin f thse frm the British 79 th Armured Div which are Veteran. Hidden Unit Status In a cnventinal game, Canadian units that start behind the ridgeline are in hidden psitins at and cunt as hidden until mved. If using Accelerated Advance t Cntact nly thse trps that start the game behind the ridgeline may cunt as hidden. Accelerated Advance t Cntact (Optinal) In rder t dispense with lengthy preliminaries f barrage and advance t cntact it is assumed that the game starts with the Canadians having advanced behind their extensive barrage until they are 5 away frm the German initial defensive lines. German casualties arising frm the initial barrage are calculated by: 1. The British player designates the Directin, Speed f advance and lifting characteristics f the barrage, its relatinship t the fllwing infantry. 2. The British player then places his fllwing frces such that the clsest psitin f his trps t the clsest defending German unit is n less than 5 and n mre than 8 (ther frces may be mre distant frm each ther.) 3. The barrage template is then placed in the clsest lcatin in frnt f the Canadian frnt line. 4. The number f turns advancing behind the barrage prir t its current psitin (i.e. 1 turn less than its current psitin) is then calculated and the cumulative number f Danger Clse attacks n the fllwing infantry applied in the fllwing way.! 1 d10 is then rlled fr each unit under the danger clse template fr each turn f the advance (i.e. 3 attacks n ne unit rll 3 d10). The die rlls are then applied in rder frm lwest t highest.! Each die rll f 7 retires that trp unit back 4.! If still under the Danger Clse template each die rll f 8 retires that trp unit back 4.! If still under the Danger Clse template any die rll f 9 suppresses the trp unit.! If still under the Danger Clse template any die rll f 0 disrders the trp unit and.! If cupled with anther f 9 r mre KOs the trp unit. 5. The full effects f the Barrage in its current psitin (i.e. befre cntact) are the calculated tgether with any Danger clse effects. The Barrage at this pint is assumed t cnsist f cmbined shell and smke. 6. The German player then starts his turn may pt t fire a barrage against the trailing edge f Canadian Barrage. This is autmatically called (if desired).

3 Off bard Artillery Fr artillery supprt yur brigade is aided by the guns f 12 Field regiments, 8 medium artillery regiments, ne heavy artillery regiment and the guns f HMS RODNEY supplying Naval Gunfire Supprt. Hwever, the AGRAs were engaging targets ff the bard as well and therefre the prtin available n the bard area is limited t that given belw. All Fire Supprt riginates frm the Nrth Table edge. Preliminary barrage 1. All available Artillery fires firing a Stnk ahead f the advancing battalins. This is 12 (twelve) large templates wide by 2 (tw) large templates deep with a mdifier f 0/ The preliminary barrage is nt subject t call-fr-fire rlls and d nt require bservatin by FOO s but shuld rll fr danger-clse (belw). 3. Nte that it is impssible fr German FOOs t spt thrugh this barrage ut t mre than 20 even if n higher elevatin, because dawn rules apply. The Direct Firing unit must als have marked itself with Yellw smke which will give it an Up 1 mdifier. 3. The FAC applies a -1 mdifier t his Call-Fr-Fire rll as well as the discipline mdifier. Air supprt is limited t 2 Typhns which may be called as required by the FAC. Fllwing any successful call the Typhns may nt be called again until the turn after the Canadian Player has rlled a 0 n a d10 rll at the start f the Canadian turn.

7 German Player Briefing Situatin Stubaf Papa Krause, CO 1 st Battalin 26 th SS Pz Gren Regt, 05:00 August 8 th 1944, Carpiquet Yu were wken early this mrning by yur Intel Officer wh advised yu f sme minus Allied preparatins t the Nrth-east f yur psitin arund Carpiquet Airfield. Yur examinatin f the map and the reprts frm yur bservers in L Abbaye Ardennes and frm radi intercepts seem t pint t a renewed Allied ffensive in yur area. Yu immediately sent a messenger t Meyer, infrming him f the situatin and telling him that yu wuld nly request the reserves he had already allcated t the 26 th SS Pz Gren Regt and which are situated in Versn, as a last resrt. Yur last instructin t yur rderly had been t wake yu half an hur befre dawn and ensure yur trps were std t by that time. Yu have reviewed the tactical situatin and cnsider that any advance acrss the pen grund f the airfield wuld be unthinkable. Hwever an advance thrugh Carpiquet village is pssible and has the ptential t utflank the Airfield cntrl buildings. Hwever, yu are satisfied that an attack in this directin will fall n yur main axis f defence. Trps in this area are well dug in r defending a village that has been thrughly frtified. Yur trps have cnstructed a frmidable defensive system f bunkers with interlcking fields f fire within the village. The trench lines within the airfield perimeter have been reestablished. They had deterirated greatly since the British built the airfield in Hwever, the perimeter wire has been strengthened, mines laid and trenches dug. Suddenly heavy shelling in the distance annunces the start f the Allied Offensive. It is 05:01 by yur watch. The Canadians must be running late tday! Yu tap yur watch while absent mindedly thinking that yur men will fight hard enugh t make the Canadians run even later as the sun rises and the battle develps. If a call fr fire is ever failed then rll an additinal 1 d10 fr each battery firing. If the result is lwer that the current turn number divided by 5 OR is a 1 the battery will suffer an additinal, cumulative 1 n all subsequent Calls fr fire. 2. OR if a battery is firing at the trailing edge f the Allied Barrage rll a d10 with a 1 resulting in that battery suffer an additinal, cumulative 1 n all subsequent Calls fr fire. A battery affected in this way may cntinue t attempt further calls fr fire but all future penalties n calls fr fire are cumulative. A battery with limited ammunitin may be restred t nrmal peratins by vluntarily ceasing firing (annuncing that yu are ding this t build up stcks f amm r relcate fllwing cunter battery fire) and then rlling a 5 r mre n 1 d10 (fr artillery) r a 6 r mre fr werfers. A battery ding this may nt fire again until it has made a successful rll. Nebelwerfers may nly fire nce every 3 turns t simulate the effects f cunter Battery fire. Canadian Frces The Canadian player is initially deplyed behind the Ridge Line unless the Accelerated Advance t cntact ptin is in peratin when Canadian trps will deply such that the clsest psitin f his trps t the clsest defending German unit is n less than 5 and n mre than 8 (ther frces may be mre distant frm each ther.)

9 Hidden Unit Status All German MEs cunt as hidden at the start f the game. Casualty Recnstitutin and Walking Wunded Every time a German vehicle r trp stand is destryed there is a chance that the survivrs will retire t Battalin HQ and band tgether t cntinue fighting r that their wunded will nt be ttally incapacitated but evacuate t the Battalin HQ and await further rders. Each time a German vehicle (excluding transprt), gun r trp stand is destryed then rll 1 die and add 1 if the destryed unit is a 3 figure trp stand. On a result f 10 r mre the destryed in its current lcatin and mved t Battalin HQ ME as Recnstituted Infantry. Recnstituted Infantry may nly be CO, Inf (with r withut Pzfuast) r LMG. All thers are replaced by an infantry stand (n Pzfaust). Recnstituted infantry cunt exactly as nrmal Infantry. The size and strength f the Battalin HQ ME is increased by their additin (with prprtinal casualties being reduced accrdingly if applicable). Recnstituted Infantry cunt fr a casualty recnstitutin rll if KOed. Recnstituted infantry must be placed within 5 f the Battalin CO r the MO and may nt be placed within 10 f a knwn enemy. If this is n pssible t achieve then the recnstituted r walking wunded unit is KOed. Casualty recnstitutin des nt stp the unit being KOed frm its riginal ME and cunting as casualties fr that riginal ME.
