1 Three Rivers District 2017 Official Rules As we enter int this fun and spirited scut cmpetitin it is imprtant that we remember why we are here. We all want the best fr ur bys and we believe that the Aims & Methds f Scuting can help t prvide exactly what it says it will: character develpment, citizenship training, and persnal fitness. The methds by which the aims are achieved are imprtant t us such as the ideals spelled ut in the Scut Oath and the Scut Law. Let s be sure t remember the Scut Oath and Scut Law as we help ur bys thrugh the prcess f the Pinewd Derby Race with all aspects frm ideatin t car building t racing and gd sprtsmanship. These are the fficial Green Muntain Cuncil/Three Rivers District Pinewd Derby rules. These rules supersede any rules yur Pack may have used, any pinewd derby website (ther than the GMC Website) yu may have read, as well as the rules/cnstructin instructins fund in the Pinewd Derby kits. All cubs participating in the District Pinewd Derby must adhere t these rules r they will nt be allwed t participate in the event.

2 Hw t Participate The District Pinewd Derby is pen t all registered Scuts f the Three Rivers District f the Green Muntain Cuncil wh finished in the tp three f their Cub Scuts Packs fr each scut rank level (i.e. Tigers, Wlves, Bears, Webels and Arrw f Light). Alternates will nt be allwed. Dates, times and duratins fr registratin, inspectin and the race will be published n the Official Registratin Frm. Qualificatin All Packs are required t register in advance f the race by submitting the names and ranks f the scuts t be in the race as nted n the fficial registratin frm. The frm, alng with pre-payment, shall be submitted t the Green Muntain Cuncil Service Center n later than the published date. Registratin is by Pack nly, nt by family. Late registratin and registratin at the event will nt be permitted. Each Scut may enter ne (1) car and must be present t be included in the cmpetitin. Family emergencies r religius hliday bservatin are the nly exceptin t this rule. The car that races in the District Derby must be the same car raced the Pack Pinewd Derby. Each car must pass a Pre-Race Technical Inspectin befre it may cmpete. Inspectin ccurs during registratin and ends prmptly 45 minutes prir t race time. If a car des nt pass inspectin, the wner will be infrmed f the reasn his car did nt pass and will be allwed t mdified and re-registered up until registratin end. The race will begin prmptly at published race time. Scuts must be present t race.

3 The RULES part 1 A Scut is TRUSTWORTHY. A Scut tells the truth. He is hnest, and he keeps his prmises. Peple can depend n him. BASIC RULES: On the pages fllwing yu will find further IMPORTANT details 1. Ttal width shall nt exceed 2-3/4 inches 2. Length shall nt exceed 7 inches. 3. Bttm f car t track clearance shall be n less than 3/8 inch. 4. Weight shall nt exceed 5 unces. 5. Axels, wheels, and the bdy shall be frm the materials prvided in the kit r purchased frm either scutstuff.rg r GMC Scut Stre. 6. Wheels bearings, washers, and bushings are prhibited 7. Lubricating il, liquid silicne, grease, r ther liquid lubricant MAY NOT be used. Axles MAY be lubricated with pwdered graphite. 8. The car shall nt ride n any kind f spring. 9. The car must be free-wheeling, with n starting devices.

4 The RULES in detail A SPECIAL nte n all Official BSA Grand Prix Pinewd Derby Kits and materials: If yu can buy it at the Green Muntain Cuncil Service Center r at scutstuff.rg it can be used in the cnstructin f yur race car! Inspectin Prcedure begins and ends at the published time. Weight check using District electrnic scale will be cnducted. Size check using District Dimensin Bx will be cnducted. Wheels measured fr cmpliance and allwed tlerance. Lubricant checks will be cnducted. Lse materials n cars will be remved. Pinewd Car Specificatins Materials: Race cars shall be cnstructed fr this event frm the parts cntained in the Official BSA Grand Prix Pinewd Derby Kit nly (referred t belw as the kit) as sld by the Green Muntain Cuncil Scut Stre r thrugh the scutstuff.rg web site. Materials frm the kit may be supplemented r replaced as nted in the SPECIAL nte abve. Cars made frm ther kits r materials will be disqualified. Weights and Attachment: Weight may be added t the car and will be cnsidered part f the car fr purpses f all measurements. "Weight" is cnsidered t be any material n the car that is nt prvided in the kit. All weight must be securely fastened t the car, e.g. by permanent glue, nails r screws. Weights shall be passive, i.e. nn-mveable, nn-magnetic, nn-electric, nn-stick y, nn-liquid etc. Please nte that the weight f a car may be different frm scale t scale. NOTE: Humidity and heat des cause the weight f yur car t vary. Please d nt argue weight based n what yur car may have weighed at yur Pack Race r n anther scale. Lubricants: Only dry, fine grund pwdered graphite is permitted. Graphite with any type f additive(s) is prhibited. Cars may nly be lubricated prir t r during inspectin and nt afterwards r during the race. Oil, grease, silicn spar r any ther lubricating prducts r cmpunds are nt permitted.

5 The RULES in detail (cntinued) Wheels: Aftermarket wheels that are nt in accrdance with the Materials specificatin r the SPECIAL nte are nt allwed. Wheel treatment (hub and tread smthing and plishing) may cnsist f smthing r de-burring, but nt the remval f substantial material frm apprved cmpnents. The car shall nt ride n springs. The riginal tread marks n the face f the wheel must remain intact, i.e. apparent t the inspectr. Wheel surface must remain flat and even with the track. Wheels may nt be cncave r cnvex, nr have any ridges, r grves. Wheels & axles may nt be angled r canted axels must be parallel t the track (CLARIFICATION all wheels shuld tuch the track. Judges will determine if car meets this specificatin. If a car s axels are using drilled hles, and the wheels d nt tuch by placing twelve quarters n tp f car, the car may be rejected.) 6 The RULES in detail (cntinued) Axles: Size: Axles may be sanded, plished r smthed. The axle nails shall be firmly affixed t the wd f the car bdy. If an axle slt is nt straight, is brken, defective, r therwise nt usable as determined by the car builder, a new ne may be cut r drilled. It is als acceptable t drill a new slt r axel hles with a jig. Sme graphical clarificatin f the Basic rules n the max width and height.

7 The RULES in detail (cntinued) Shapes: The Pinewd Derby track starting gate has wden dwels that prtrude up frm each lane t hld the cars in place at the tp f the track prir t each race. These dwels are represented by the black circles in the diagram belw. Cars must be designed s that n part f the car is frward f the wden dwels. Ntches r curves in the frnt f the cars must be avided if they will cause part f the car t be frward f the starting line while the car is in the resting psitin befre the race. See diagrams belw fr the crrect and incrrect psitining f the cars. Cars shall nt be shaped t prvide an unfair advantage at the starting gate, including a steep upward slpe in frnt f the frnt axles. It als may nt have a grve r cut ut that allws it t begin rlling befre the pin has fully drpped.

8 The RULES in detail (cntinued) Racing Prcedures The District will cnduct the race n 2 tracks. Prir t each heat, car numbers and lane assignments will be annunced verbally r via electrnic prjectin. In additin, the tracks may be displayed n vide screens. Entries experiencing a mechanical failure will be allwed t re-race if it can be repaired during the same heat. It will cunt as a heat lss if it cannt be repaired prir t the beginning f the next heat. All repairs f this type must be dne with a member f "The Pit Crew" bserving and certifying as t its race-ability. In the event that all cars dn t reach the finish line, the ne that ges the furthest is declared the winner. All rulings by "The Pit Crew" are FINAL. Discipline/Cntrversies Scuts, parents, and family members are expected t cnduct their behavir accrding t Scuting s principals. The Race Chairpersn will, in an islated area, handle all cntrversies. Decisins will be final and nt subject t discussin during the event. Arguing with race fficials and making a scene will nt be tlerated and is grunds fr disqualificatin. The Scut and his family will be asked t leave. This is a vlunteer run activity and that the purpse if fr everyne t have fun. REMEMBER A Scut is Curteus. A Scut is plite t everyne regardless f age r psitin. He knws that using gd manners makes it easier fr peple t get alng. A Scut is Kind. A Scut knws there is strength in being gentle. He treats thers as he wants t be treated. Withut gd reasn, he des nt harm r kill any living thing. A Scut is Obedient. A Scut fllws the rules f his family, schl, and trp. He beys the laws f his cmmunity and cuntry. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries t have them changed in an rderly manner rather than disbeying them.
