4 1 - Steel Global crude steel output contracted in February 2018, by 8.9% compared with January, to million mt, due to holidays in China and fewer days in February compared to January. Feb. output was also 1.6% lower than in Feb. last year, due to current production cuts in China. China: Feb production dropped month-on-month by 10% according to a first estimate based on CRU figures, due to Chinese New Year holidays in February. China s output also decreased by 5% from Feb because of government-ordered output restrictions in north China during the winter time (until March). Rest of the world: steel output contracted by 8% MoM in February, but it was also 1% higher than in Feb Year-to-date (Jan.+Feb.) output in the ROW is 2% higher than in the same period of

5 2 Silico-manganese (SiMn) Global SiMn production dropped in February, to million mt, off 9.1% from January but also 42.4% higher than in February last year. SiMn output was lower MoM in all regions, due to reduced steel production, New Year holidays in China, and fewer days in February compared to January. Year-to-date supply is 35% higher than in Jan.-Feb. 2017, with all regions increasing output year-on-year. Asia & Oceania: China s output was 0.82 million mt in Feb., down by 12% from January. 20 smelters stopped production in February, mostly in the provinces of Guangxi and Guizhou. CIS: production contracted by 6% MoM in January, as Ukraine and Georgia reduced production. Europe: production dropped by 11%, on slowing output in France and Norway. 5

6 3 High-carbon ferro-manganese (HC FeMn) In February, global HC FeMn production dropped to a record low since March last year, to 322,000 mt, down by 9.1% from January, but also 8.1% higher YoY, as all regions increased output compared with February Year-to-date output is also 9.4% higher than in the first 2 months of last year. Asia & Oceania: production declined in February in China, due to New Year holidays. Output also contracted in Malaysia and Vietnam in February compared with the previous month. YTD supply for the region is 12% higher than in Jan.-Feb. last year. CIS: Production off by just 1% MoM in February, as lower output in Russia offset rising production by Privat in Ukraine. 6

7 4 Refined ferro-manganese (Ref FeMn) Global refined ferro-manganese output dropped to a 1-year low in February: it was 116,000 mt, down by almost 10% from January, but also 3.8% higher than in February last year. Year-to-date output is almost 5% higher YoY, as Asian smelters increased production from the Jan.-Feb. period of last year. Asia: production declined by 14% MoM in Feb., but rose by 7% YoY on higher output in China, South Korea, and Japan compared to February Europe & CIS: production increased in February compared to January, in Norway and to a lesser extent in Ukraine. But YTD supply for the region is off by 6% from the same period of Americas & Africa: output contracted by 10% from January, and it was also down by 4% from February last year. Year-to-date production is stable from the first 2 months of

8 5 Manganese ore Global Mn ore supply dropped in February by 3% MoM to million mt (Mn contained), but it was also 20% higher than in February last year. And year-to-date production is also 20% higher than in the first 2 months of last year, which were marked by production cuts. Africa & Middle East: output increased by 7% in Feb. from the previous month, as production by South African miners reached a new record high, driven by strong demand from China and high prices. Production and demand statistics by country are available on IMnI s website (for IMnI Members only): Asia & Oceania: output for the region fell by 16% in Feb. from January, but it was also 29% higher YoY, and year-to-date supply is 31% higher than in the first 2 months of

9 6 Manganese metal Global manganese metal production contracted in February for the 2 nd consecutive month, by 16% from the previous month and by 17% from February last year, to 119,000 mt, due to production cuts in China after environmental inspections, and to fewer days in February compared to January. China: 115,400 mt produced in February, 16% lower MoM and off 17% YoY. There were only 30 active EMM producers in China in February 2018, down from 35 in January, and 49 in January last year. A few producers in Hunan, Guizhou and Chongqing provinces stopped producing in February, following environmental inspections. EMM production and capacity statistics by province in China are available on IMnI s website (for Members only): ROW: production contracted by 8% from January, and by 1% from February last year. Year-to-date production is 3% lower than in January-February last year. 9
