LOUIS ====================================== KEEPING THE TRADITION ALIVE President s Points December 2012 Happy Holidays to all.another year has come to a close for our club. This past year was packed full of a variety of different events and a little bit of drama. We saw a slight decrease in membership but also a lot of enthusiasm by a majority of our members. Some of our most notable events were the St. Pat s Parade in downtown St. Louis where we managed to be named the Best Classic Unit. We have won this award the last two years. This is quite an accomplishment considering all of the other entries in the parade. We also continued to grow our relationship with the Museum of Transportation with the Mustang Roundup and our annual car show. The roundup wasn t quite as successful this year as in the past due to the all day rain on Saturday, April 14 th. We did manage to have 12 members come out on Sunday the 15 th to help the Model T and old Fords group with their part of the All Ford Weekend. Our 3 rd Annual Car Show was held on Saturday, June 9 th and was well attended. The charity of choice this year was Stray Rescue and they were able to bring some of their many fostered dogs out for the day. We raised over $ dollars to assist them with the cost of finding good homes for the many dogs that they save from the streets. If I remember correctly Stary Rescue managed to have three dogs adopted at the show. Great day for everybody that participated On July 29th we attended the Fords Unlimited Car Clubs 26 th Annual Car Show at JS McDonnell Park. The day started out with persistent showers and really affected the attendance. We
Presidents Points Page 2 Continued from page 1 picked up the club participation award of $50.00 and donated back to their charity. These were just a couple of things that came to mind and I know there were many more this year. We ll continue our mission for next year of giving back to the community through our charitable work. There will definitely be some changes for next year. We ll plan some new events and possibly bring some back that we haven t done in awhile. There are events being planned and worked on right now for the winter months so stay tuned and watch your s. There have been a few changes in some of our volunteer positions. We have a new editor for the newsletter. Dave Buecher is now the new editor so please welcome him and keep his mailbox full with contributions to the newsletter. Also, Bill Coerver is going to take over the Membership Director duties for 2013 as Tom Nelson is going to move into our Technical Guru position. He will be contributing tech articles to the newsletter on a monthly basis. We re still looking for some help with the activities committee for So if this sounds like something you want to get involved with just let me know. The more people involved the wider range of events that we can plan for next year. Also, the dates for the Mustang Roundup and our 4 th Annual Car Show have been set for The Mustang Roundup will be on Saturday, April 13 th and the 4 th Annual Car Show will be on Saturday, June 8 th. I guess that will be all for this month and also the year. Everyone have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Be safe as you travel to celebrate the holiday season. Till Next Month Keep the Tradition Alive, Mike Herbert, President MCSTL
Veterans Day Parade Here we are again at the Veterans Day Parade in Downtown St. Louis. It was a beautiful day and lots of participants, 70 units I believe were in the parade. We had a total of 13 cars and 1 Hot Rod Jeep. Sadly, not enough people showed up for the parade, I think there were more in the parade than watching it. We all had a good time getting together for this event. Hopefully next year there will be more onlookers to celebrate the day we Honor our Veterans. Thank all of you who attended... Page 3
BBQ at Jefferson Barracks Hospital Saturday Nov. 17, Our annual BBQ for the Veterans at Jefferson Barracks Hospital was a successful event. This year there wasn t that many Vets. At the Hospital, but the ones that were there really appreciated the food. I would say approximately 40 to 60 people in all were there this year. It is hard to gauge how many will be there at any given time, sometimes a lot and other times not so many. A lot of them went to their homes for the weekend. We had a good showing from the club, and a few of the Shriners were there also. For those new members, we go in with the American Muscle Unit from Moolah Shrine and have this BBQ every year and it has been quit successful. The Vets love it as well as does the staff. Mmmm! I can smell them pork steaks cooking now. Thanks to all who attended. Pictures were provided by Linda Nahlik.. Thanks Linda! Page 4
Page 5 To the MCSTL members, here is the information on the Ornaments for Officers that I brought up at our meeting last week. Susan King, widow of Sgt. Mike King of the University City Police Department, is the chair this year and this is her first fundraising effort for Backstoppers. If you know of any organization/individual who would be interested in displaying the ornaments, please forward the information to them. I have ordered our ornaments and I will have them for sale at Rich & Jennifer s Christmas party. They sell for $9.00 each. See below for photographs of the ornaments. Thank you for your support for Backstoppers. Dorothy Hepler. Jennifer and Rich spread the word about the "Mustang Club of St. Louis" while in Florida on vacation. Numerous people from all over the country at WDW stopped them to talk Mustangs. We thank them for spreading the word. Just look at those two Love Birds, isn t that sweet... Totally 80 s Trivia Night was a resounding success. Tom Muldoon told me that there were over 500 people in attendance. MCSTL had 4 tables full, approximately 30 people from our club showed up. Diane Glen wife of Randy won the second 50/50 drawing of ($900.00).Congrats to the Glens, a job well done. Thanks to all of those from the club that attended, it really turned out nice, this was a overwhelming show of support for Brenna Muldoon. (Middle picture) She looks sooooo 80 s. :-)
Page 6 SALEEN ANNOUNCES THE 351 MUSTANG Enhancing the current model lineup with the specially built 351 Cubic Inch offering. One Bad Pony Los Angeles, CA (November 29, 2012) Hot on the heels of Steve Saleen regaining his namesake brand comes the first model announcement since the news was released. Making his announcement at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the well known man of Mustangs announced the Saleen 351 Mustang. Since regaining the Saleen brand, I really want to bring it all together with the heritage that Saleen is known for, said Steve Saleen. With the current Saleen [302] Mustang model it provides all the right features to bring back and update the S351 model. After nearly 13 years since a Saleen production vehicle has been powered by a 351 c.i.d. powerplant, this new model debut has an exciting list of technological and design offerings under the Saleen 351 model name. Power The most notable component in the 351 is the Saleen engineered 351 cubic inch V8 engine which will produce 700 hp and 655 ft-lb of torque when paired with the Saleen 296 supercharger system. Everything about this project has been mindful of the goal to create the most potent Mustang on the market, said Al Wagner, V.P. of Engineering. I think we have certainly pushed the bar in the production Mustang segment with our 351 offering. Once the project came together I couldn t help but thinking; if the 302 mustang is using a coyote engine, the 351 is definitely the gray wolf of the class. Transferring all of that power requires the use of some specialized equipment as well. The Saleen 351 will utilize a 6-speed transmission equipped with a high performance Saleen clutch system, and a 3.73:1 final drive ratio to ensure that the power will be where its most required, on the ground. Brakes, Wheels and Tires Working in conjunction to the wheel, tire, and Saleen S4 suspension are the Saleen 15 brake package which are a well-placed component of this 700 hp Saleen vehicle. A multi-piston brake caliper setup is critical to a high performance vehicle of this caliber, added Wagner. The amount of power that this vehicle can deliver is astounding and needed to have a well composed counterpart allowing it comparable stopping power. Rounding out the performance system on the 351 are the Saleen 5-spoke alloy wheels wrapped with high performance tires. Setup in a staggered formation of 20x9 front and 20x10 rear, the slalom performance times and corning capabilities are set to be on-par with levels approaching those of pure bred racecars. Design Building on the design elements from the Saleen 302 Mustang, the 351 will feature the Red Butterfly Center Ram Air Induction system which has become a signature of the Saleen brand. A truly functional system, the Red Butterfly hood allows cold air to intake through the butterfly scoop design as they open-up under throttle. Once the air passes through the butterfly openings it is directed through the engine compartment to the 351 s powerplant where it becomes a tributary to the air intake system. Additional design components include full carbon fiber front and side splitters, as well as a carbon fiber rear diffuser which houses the F-1 style tail lamp. A complete treatment of Saleen 351 badging and graphics will also be included to complement any one of the standard or custom Saleen paint schemes available on all Saleen vehicles. Article courtesy of Randy Glen...Thanks Randy.
