1 ASSEMBLING THE BOARD The cmpnent list can be fund n the last 2 pages f this dcument. Refer t it when installing cmpnents n the bard. All cmpnents lcatins are numbered and the cmpnent list shws the crrespnding values and identifying markings. COMPONENT INSTALLATION NOTES: ALL cmpnents will be installed n the tp f the bard with the exceptin f the OPTIONAL dual battery hlder. ATMEGA328P The ntch f the Atmega328 IC and DIP scket shuld be riented twards the tp f the bard. Pin 1 is the upper-left pin n ftprint. The Atmega328P can be sldered directly t the bard r can be installed in the prvided 28-pin DIP scket. Installing the Atmega328 in the DIP scket is recmmended t allw fr future remval and replacement if required. ENSURE CORRECT ORIENTATION BEFORE YOU SOLDER THE PINS 5V LDO Vltage Regulatr There are tw 5-vlt LDO ptins. ONLY INSTALL 1 5V LDO. (OPTION1) PN# MCP1826S-5002E/AB Install this LDO at lcatin 5VLDO1 ONLY, facing twards the bttm end f the bard Pin 1 n the bard is identified as a square pin hle n the left f the ftprint. Refer t image belw-left: Refer t the image abve-right t identify pin 1 n the 5V LDO IC. Make sure it is riented t pin 1 n the bard befre sldering. 1

2 (OPTION2) PN# MC33269T-5.0 Install this LDO in 5VDLO2 ONLY, facing twards the TOP f the bard. Pin 1 n the bard is identified by a small circle next t it n the right-side f the ftprint. Refer t image belw-left: Refer t the image abve-right t identify pin 1 n the 5V LDO IC. Make sure it is riented t pin 1 n the bard befre sldering. Electrlytic Capacitrs There are 2 electrlytic capacitrs n the bard: c2 (470uf), and c9(100uf). These capacitrs are plarized and need t be installed with the crrect plarity. The case f the capacitr is marked n the NEGATIVE pin. The ftprint f the capacitr n the bard is marked with a + sign n the psitive pin: Make sure yu rient the NEGATIVE pin f the capacitr AWAY frm the + sign when installing the cmpnent Dide (D1) - 1N4148 The 1N4148 dide included in this kit is a small range cmpnent marked with a black line t indicate the CATHODE end. The cathde f the dide ftprint n the bard is marked with a line as well. Ensure that yu rient the line n the dide with the line n the ftprint when befre sldering. Red/Green LED (LD1) LD1 is a red/green dual-led with 3 pins. One side f the LED is flattened, the ther side is rund. The flattened side indicates the RED side f the LED. Ensure that yu align the RED pin f the LED with the pin marked with the R n the bard near the LEDs ftprint. NRF24L01+ and ESP8266 The NRF24L01+ and ESP8266 radi mdules can be sldered directly t the bard r using the included 4x2 female headers. Using the female headers allws fr easy remve/replacement f the radi mdules if desired. The headers are nt directinal and can be installed in any rientatin. Capacitr (C13) 10uf Tantalum Capacitr c13 is a plarized 10uf Tantalum capacitr. The case f the capacitr is marked with a + sign n the psitive lead. Install this capacitr with the psitive lead riented twards the tp f the bard. 2

3 Crystal Oscillatr (Q1) A160j2 The crystal scillatr is a silver lzenge-shaped device with tw pins n the bttm. It can be installed in the Q1 ftprint in either rientatin Tactile Switches - RESET & FLASH The leads f the reset and flash tactile switches shuld be installed thrugh the 4 hles in the ftprints and sldered. They will nly fit in the vertical rientatin. Yu may need t squeeze the pins tgether slightly t make them snap int place. If they dn t fit, rtate the switch 90 degrees and try again. FLASH/RUN Switch 2-psitin slide switch Yu may need t squeeze the pins f the slide switch tgether slightly t get it t fit in the ftprint. Ensure that yu slder all 6 pins. Female Pin Headers SPI, I2C, HC-05/06, NRF24L01+ (ptinal), ESP (ptinal) Female pin headers with the apprpriate dimensins and pin-cunts are prvided fr the fllwing prts: SPI 1x6 header I2C 1x5 header HC-05/06 1x6 header NRF24L01+ (ptinal) 2x4 header ESP (ptinal) 2x4 header Male Pin Headers varius Male pin headers are prvided fr the fllwing jumper and prt lcatins. In mst cases, yu will need t break ff the apprpriate number f pins fr each lcatin: BT_PRG: 2-pin (ptinal)* PWR: 3-pin PROG_ESP: 3-pin VCC_SRC: 3-pin* LDO_BYP: 3-pin* PROG/DEBUG: 5-pin ICSP: 2x3 pin male header prvided BATTERY: 2x3 male header prvided* *NOTE: Jumpers are prvided fr each jumper lcatin. The BATTERY jumper lcatin requires 2 jumpers installed vertically. Male pin headers shuld be installed frm the tp f the bard, with the lnger end f the header sticking up. Remaining Cmpnents varius resistrs and capacitrs The remaining cmpnents are nt plarized they can be installed in any rientatin in their ftprint n the bard. Verify that yu have the crrect values fr each prir t sldering the pins. RESISTOR cmpnent lcatins are identified with an R (R1, R2...) CAPACITOR cmpnent lcatins are identified with a C (C1, C2 ) 3

4 NOTE: Bend the leads f the cmpnents utwards nce yu have pushed them thrugh the hles n the bard. This will help hld them in place while yu slder them. Ensure that yu clip the leads t within 1/8 inch f the bttm f the bard after sldering. (OPTIONAL) Sensr Pull-Up Resistrs R1, R4, R13 Resistrs R1, R4 and R13 are ptinal pull-up resistrs fr sensrs munted at SENSOR1 and SENSOR3 and SENSOR4. 4.7K hms resistrs are prvided but can be left ut r replaced with a sensr mre suited t yur sensrs as required. Sensr2 des have a pull-up resistr. (OPTIONAL) Vltage-Sense Resistrs R12, R11 Resistrs are nt prvided fr R12 and R11. These OPTIONAL resistrs create a vltage divider fr measuring battery vltage and their values will be determined by yur surce vltage. See peratinal ntes fr mre infrmatin. (OPTIONAL) Dual Battery Hlder Make sure t install the OPTIONAL dual battery hlder in the crrect rientatin. POSTIVE (+) Terminals are installed at the tp f the bard in the VIN+ slts. Installing the battery hlder in any ther psitin can cause damage t the bard when batteries are installed. NOTE: Install all f yur sensrs and cmpnents befre installing the OPTIONAL dual battery hlder. Yu will nt have access t the bttm f the bard ne it is installed, making sensr installatin difficult. Clip the leads f all installed cmpnents t less than 1/8 inch nce yu have cmpleted the assembly. This will allw fr prper cnnectin f the OPTIONAL dual battery hlder. WHEN INSTALLING BATTERIES IN THE OPTIONAL DUAL BATTERY HOLDER, THE POSITIVE ENDS OF BOTH BATTERIES GO TO THE TOP OF THE HOLDER AS IDICATED BY THE POLARITY MARKINGS INSIDE THE HOLDER EVEN IF YOU PLAN TO USE THEM IN SERIES MODE. THE BATTERY JUMPER ON THE BOARD DETERMINES THE PARALLEL/SERIES CONFIGURATION OF THE BATTERIES. ENSURE ALL JUMPERS ARE IN THE CORRECT POSITION AFTER INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE AND PRIOR TO APPLYING POWER TO THE BOARD. SEE THE OPERATIONAL NOTES BELOW FOR PROPER JUMPER OPERATION. 4

5 OPERATIONAL NOTES Pwering the bard The bard can be pwer via the VIN Mlex cnnectr, the 2.1mm barrel jack, the OPTIONAL dual battery hlder, r by applying +5V t any +5V pin n the bard (such as with a USB-Serial cnverter). Supply vltage will depend n the physical cnfiguratin f the bard: Withut a 5VLDO installed r with LDO_BYP set t +5V: 2.5-5VDC, jumper LDO_BYP t +5V WARNING! D nt supply > 5Vdc in this cnfiguratin r damage t cmpnents can ccur 5V LDO MCP1826S-5002E/AB installed at 5VLDO1: 5.2-6VDC, jumper LDO_BYP t LDO 5V LDO MC33269T-5.0 installed at 5VLDO2: VDC, jumper LDO_BYP t LDO WARNING! DO NOT SUPPLY > 5Vdc WITH JUMPER LDO_BYP IN THE +5V POSITION. DAMAGE TO COMPONENTS CAN OCCUR. ENSURE THIS JUMPER IS IN THE CORRECT POSITION BEFORE APPLYING POWER TO THE BOARD Prgramming the Atmega328 Requires a USB-Serial cnverter The included Atmega328 is pre-cnfigured with the Arduin btlader. Cnnect a USB-Serial cnverter t yur PC. Cnnect cables s that the pins n the USB-Serial mdule align t the pins n the pins n the PROG/DEBUG prt n the right side f the bard. NOTE: Cnnect the TX pin n the serial cnverter t the RX pin n the bard. RX n the serial cnverter ges t TX n the bard. Ensure yu have made these cnnectins crrectly. If using the USB 2.0 t TTL UART USB-Serial cnverter available in my stre, simply align the same clr wire with DRT n the mdule and the RESET pin n the bard, the ther pins are in crrespnding rder. The USB-Serial cnverter can prvide the required 5Vdc pwer t run the bard. The 3v3 pin n the serial cnverter is nt used. Once cnnected, pen the IDE and select the crrect serial prt frm the prts list t crrespnd with yur USB-Serial cnverter. Select UNO/Genuin frm the bards menu. Click the uplad buttn and the sketch shuld uplad t yur bard. If the sketch uplad fails, check all f yur cnnectins and try again. Using the OPTIONAL USBasp AVRISP Prgrammer NOTE: This mdule requires installatin f a driver in Windws T install the driver fr the USBasp prgrammer: 1. Visit link fr prduct and driver infrmatin: 2. Dwnlad Zadig USB driver installatin tl: Zadig USB Driver Tl 3. Run Zadig tl 4. Plug USBasp device int USB prt and allw Windws t discver it 5

6 5. Frm the OPTION menu f the Zadig tl, select 'List All Devices' 6. Frm the list f discvered devices, select 'USBasp' 7. Select 'libusbk (v )' in the driver selectin field 8. Click the 'Replace Driver' buttn 9. Remve USBasp device and plug back int USB prt Cnnect the cable frm the USBasp prgrammer t the ICSP cnnectr n the bard. Ensure that the ARROW n the cable s cnnectr is riented with PIN 1 n the ICSP cnnectr n the bard. Frm within the Arduin IDE, Select 'USBasp' frm the PROGRAMMERS menu. Yu dn't need t select a serial prt. Select UNO/Genuin frm the bards menu f the IDE. Click Burn Btlader. Ignre any warnings abut SPI speed, the USBasp mdule selects the SPI speed autmatically. The USBasp can als be used t uplad sketches r HEX files t the Atmega328, using the AVR IDE f yur chice. Simple cnnect the USBasp t the ICSP cnnectr f the bard, ensuring the crrect rientatin f pin 1. If using the Arduin IDE, select USBasp frm the PROGRAMMERS menu and then click Uplad Using Prgrammer. NOTE: This prgramming methd verwrites the Arduin btlader, meaning that yu will nt be able t uplad sketches using a USB-Serial cnverter until yu burn a new btlader t the Atmega328. Prgramming/Debugging the OPTIONAL ESP8266 The OPTIONAL ESP8266 radi mdule has a dedicated 3-pin prgram/debug prt labeled as PROG_ESP. This prt can be used t uplad firmware, issue AT cmmands, r debug the radi mdule. Cnnect the TX pin f a USB-Serial cnverter t the RX pin f the PROG_ESP header. Cnnect the RX pin f the serial cnverter t the TX pin f the PROG_ESP header. T issue AT cmmands t the ESP mdule mve the RUN/FLASH switch t the FLASH psitin. This cnnects the RX pin frm the radi mdule t the TX pin PROG_ESP header. NOTE: This discnnects the RX pin f the ESP mdule frm the Atmega328. The RUN/FLASH switch must be in the RUN psitin fr the Atmega328 t cmmunicate with the ESP8266. NOTE: THE TX pin f the ESP8266 is always cnnected t the RX pin f the PROG_ESP header, regardless f the psitin f the RUN/FLASH switch. This allws fr debugging f the mdule during peratin. Use yur preferred Terminal Emulatin prgram (including the Serial Mnitr f the Arduin IDE) t issue AT cmmands r debug the ESP radi mdule. T flash firmware t the ESP8266 mdule, make the cnnectins listed abve and place the RUN/FLASH switch int the FLASH psitin. Hld dwn the FLASH buttn while applying pwer t the bard t put the ESP8266 int flash mde. 6

7 NOTE: If yu are getting garbage frm the TX pin f the ESP8266, try changing the BAUD rate f yur terminal prgram. All ESP8266 mdules I sell are pre-set t a UART speed f 57600, but may use a speed f in certain debug mdes. Measuring VIN/Battery Vltage Resistrs R11 and R12 frm a vltage divider fr measuring VIN/battery vltage with Atmega328 pin D14/A0. Select resistr values t reduce surce vltage t ~1.1Vdc at Atmega328 pin. R12 cnnects t VIN (vltage divider UPPER resistr) R11 cnnects t GND (vltage divider LOWER resistr) Prgram OPTIONAL HC-05 Bluetth Mdule When using an OPTIONAL HC-05 Bluetth, yu can mdify the settings f the device by putting it int AT mde and issuing AT cmmands. Yu will need a USB-Serial cnverter in rder prgram the HC-05. The SCL (TX) and SDA (RX) pins n the I2C cnnectr can be cnfigured as a sftwareserial prt with their input/utput redirected t the hardware serial prt RX/TX lines (the HC-05 is tied t the hardware serial prt). SCL is pin D19 in the Arduin IDE, and SDA is pin D20. Fllw the steps belw: Uplad a sftware serial sketch t the bard with the fllwing settings: SERIAL PORT SPEED: Sftware serial pin cnfig: TX = 19, RX = 20 Sftware serial speed: Redirect IO frm the serial prt t the sftware serial prt and vice-versa Remve pwer frm the bard Cnnect the TX pin f yur USB-Serial device t the SDA pin; Cnnect the RX pin f yur USB-Serial device t the SCL pin; Cnnect GND f yur USB-Serial device t any GND cnnectin n the bard; Put the HC-05 mdule int AT mde by hlding the small buttn n the side f the mdule while yu apply pwer t the bard. The LED will begin t blink slwly Issue AT cmmands t cnfigure the Bluetth mdule When finished, remve pwer frm the bard and discnnect yur USB-Serial cnverter 7

8 BATTERY BATTERY JUMPER CONFIGURATION LDO_BYP Jumper The LDO_BYP jumper can be used t bypass the installed 5V LDO. Yu might want t d this if yu are prviding ~5V via the barrel cnnectr, r ne f the 5V pins. Yu wuld als use this jumper t bypass the 5V LDO if yu are using the dual battery hlder in PARALLEL mde as this prvides ~4.2Vdc and is sufficient t run the bard in sme instances. JUMPER POSITION RESULT +5 VIN vltage is applied directly t the 5V rail LDO VIN vltage is ruted t the 5V LDO WARNING! DO NOT SUPPLY > 5Vdc WITH THE JUMPER IN THE +5V POSITION. DAMAGE TO COMPONENTS CAN OCCUR. ENSURE THIS JUMPER IS IN THE CORRECT POSITION BEFORE APPLYING POWER TO THE BOARD BATTERY Jumper The BATTERY jumper can be used in cnjunctin with the dual battery hlder t put the batteries int SERIES r PARALLEL cnfiguratin. This cnnectr requires 2 physical jumpers, installed vertically, side-by-side. See diagram belw. SERIES SERIES PARALLEL SERIES PARA PARA JUMPER POSITION SERIES PARA RESULT Batteries cnnected in SERIES, prvides ~8.4Vdc* *ENSURE LDO_BYP IS IN LDO POSITION PRIOR TO INSTALLING BATTERIES OR DAMAGE COULD OCCUR Batteries cnnected in PARALLEL, prvides ~4.3Vdc* *ENSURE LDO_BYP IS IN +5+ POSITION PRIOR TO INSTALLING BATTERIES NO JUMPERS if n jumpers are installed, battery vltage will nt be cnnected t VIN VCC_SRC Jumper The VCC_SRC jumper can be used t set the vltage f the VCC_SRC rail. This rail prvides pwer t the Atmega328, SENSOR2, SENSOR3, and SPI prt. JUMPER POSITION RESULT +5V Vltage n +5V rail is applied t VCC pwer rail 3v3 3.3Vdc is applied t VCC pwer rail NO JUMPER VCC pwer rail is nt pwered (flating) 8

9 NOTE: SENSOR1, DTH-22/HC-SR04, I2C, HC05/06 are pwered frm the 5V rail. NRF24L01+ and ESP8255 radi mdules are pwered frm the 3.3V rail. SENSOR2, SENSOR3, SPI, and the ATMEGA328P are pwered frm VCC rail BT_PRG The BT_PRG jumper is used t put certain supprted HC-05/06 Bluetth mdules int prgramming (AT) mde. Clsing the jumper applies 3.3Vdc t the KEY/ENABLE pin f the Bluetth mdule. This is required in rder t frce certain mdules t enter prgramming mde and must be dne prir t applying pwer t the bard. JUMPER POSITION CLOSED NO JUMPER RESULT 3.3v applied t KEY/ENABLE pin f Bluetth mdule N cnnectin NOTE: Mst sensrs sld in my shp have a small buttn n the Bluetth mdule itself that is used t put the mdule int prgramming(at) mde.
