1: INTRODUCTION Cruiser instruments are designed t perate frm a 12 vlt battery supply and are supplied cmplete with sensrs, displays and display munting kits. Prir t unpacking this instrument read and fully understand the installatin instructins. Only prceed with the installatin if yu are cmpetent t d s. Nasa Marine Ltd. will nt accept any respnsibility fr injury r damage caused by, during r as a result f the installatin f this prduct. Any piece f equipment can fail due t a number f causes. D nt install this equipment if it is the nly surce f infrmatin and its failure culd result in injury r death. Instead return the instrument t yur retailer fr full credit. Remember this equipment is an aid t navigatin and nt a substitute fr prper seamanship. This instrument is used at yur wn risk, use it prudently and check its peratin frm tine t time against ther data. Inspect the installatin frm time t time and seek advice if any part theref is nt fully seawrthy. The surface f cruiser has an acrylic finish chemically bnded t a tugh plastic. T keep it lking gd clean nly with a damp clth. D nt use abrasive cleaners r slvents. 2: INSTALLING THE DISPLAY Cruiser instruments are waterprf when panel munted and are designed fr pen cckpit munting. Select a cnvenient psitin fr the display n a panel r bulk head. The site must be flat and the cavity behind the panel must remain dry at all times. (The cable entry bss is nt sealed t allw free passage f air t and frm the unit. This prevents misting f the display.) The psitins fr the fixing hles can be marked n the panel using the drill template which is an integral part f the packing cartn. Befre drilling check that there is sufficient space behind the panel t rute the cables and t allw access t tighten up the wing fixing nuts. Drill the five hles and check that the unit fits. It may be wise t cnnect the cables befre finally fixing the unit in psitin. A spnge rubber seal is prvided which shuld be fitted int the slt in the back f the instrument. Fit the instrument int the panel and tighten up the fur wing nuts finger tight nly. It is imprtant that the spnge rubber seal makes gd cntact with the panel r water may get behind the unit and enter the cavity behind the panel. 1

3: ECHO SOUNDER 3:1 INSTALLING THE TRANSDUCER The transducer can be munted in ne f three ways: (a) The transducer face can be bnded directly t the inside f the hull. (sme energy is lst t the hull but the lss in perfrmance is, fr mst G.R.P hulls, hardly nticeable). (b) A thrugh hull munt is available frm yur dealer r direct frm (c) The transducer can be psitined inside a GRP hull by means f an In Hull Transducer kit available frm yur dealer r direct frm This methd f installatin has the dual advantage that n hle is made in the vessels hull and that the ech sunder and transducer can easily be remved fr examinatin r installatin elsewhere. It shuld be mentined hwever, that althugh the accuracy will in n way be affected by installing the transducer inside the hull, the maximum range sensitivity may be reduced, depending n the thickness and quality f the glass fibre. The In Hull Kit is available direct frm NASA Marine r yur lcal chandler. Whichever is selected the best lcatin still has t be fund. Select a psitin belw the water level where the transducer will pint substantially twards the sea bed and where the transducer and cable are kept well clear f interference generating equipment. This psitin shuld be well clear f large masses f bubbles r cavitatin which wuld disrupt the signal. T test the suitability f the lcatin, press a little sticky chewing gum n the surface f the transducer and stick it dwn t the inside f the hull (remve dirt and ily residue first). The unit can then be tested. If the lcatin is satisfactry the chewing gum can be remved, and the transducer munted using ne f the methds described previusly. (Nte: D NOT shrten the transducer cable). It is imprtant that the face f the transducer is thrughly bnded dwn t the hull. A single air bubble will cause a cnsiderable lss in perfrmance. The transducer and the place f munting must be kept entirely free f any antifuling cmpund as this can als effect the perfrmance f the unit. 2

3:2 NOTES ON ELECTRICAL INTERFACE External electrical interference is characterised by persistent, randm numbers n the display which bscure the truth depth reading n the depth sunder. This is caused by large amplitude vltage spikes generally assciated with the engine s alternatr and/r ignitin system which has nt been prperly suppressed. These spikes may find their way int the sensitive amplifier sectin f the depth sunder in tw ways: (a) Thrugh the craft s cmmn pwer supply r (b) Thrugh direct radiatin frm the surce r interference. T reduce the pssibility f induced interference frm the engine s generatr and/r ignitin system chse a psitin as far away frm the engine as pssible and run the cable frm the transducer as far as practicable frm the engine. D NOT cut the transducer cable, but stw excess away frm any pssible surce f electrical interference. 3:3 CONNECTING THE DISPLAY Cnnect the black wire t the negative supply and the red wire t the psitive via a 1/4 amp fuse. The red wire f the alarm is als cnnected t the psitive supply whilst the black wire cnnects t the green wire frm the display unit. The alarm is nt watertight and must be munted in a prtected psitin. Plug the transducer int the scket n the display unit. 3:4 SOUNDER OPERATION Varius peratinal parameters need t be set int the memry prir t use t get the best frm yur Cruiser depth sunder. Once set, these parameters are permanent and are nt likely t require adjustment. Mst depth sunders measure the depth belw the transducer. It is ften mre cnvenient t display the depth belw the keel. A facility has been included where the vertical distance between the transducer face and the bttm f the keel (the keel ffset) can be prgrammed int the unit. The unit then reads the true depth belw the keel. (On delivery the keel ffset is zer s the unit will read the depth belw transducer). BACK LIGHT: A quick press f the ENTER key will turn n the back light. A further quick press f the ENTER key will turn the back light ff. 3

TO SET THE KEEL OFFSET Put the unit int engineering mde. (This is achieved by turning ff the pwer supply t the unit and turning the pwer back n whilst the ENTER key is depressed). The wrd ENG will appear until the ENTER key is released. Nw use the up and dwn keys t enter the required keel ffset. A lng press n the ENTER key will return t nrmal ech sunder peratin. SELECTING THE OPERATING UNITS (FEET OR METRES) Put the unit int engineering mde (see abve). A shrt press n the ENTER key will swap the units frm feet t metres. A lng press n the ENTER key will return t nrmal ech sunder peratin. SETTING THE SENSITIVITY THRESHOLD Eches received frm near bjects will clearly be larger than frm mre distant bjects. Eches frm keels r turbulence under the bat may be substantially greater than eches frm the sea-bed and may cause the sunder t alternate between the sea-bed and smething mre lcal. T vercme this prblem, the Cruiser sunder is fitted with variable swept gain. This reduces the sensitivity fr lcal bjects, prgressively increasing the sensitivity as depth increases. The pint at which the gain starts t rise is called the sensitivity threshld. The sensitivity f the unit at depths belw the sensitivity threshld will be cnsiderably reduced whilst abve the sensitivity threshld the unit repidly becmes mre sensitive with increasing depth. The sensitivity threshld is factry enter t 0.0 metres. T view the sensitivity threshld press ENTER The value can be altered by using the up and dwn keys. The value is then fixed in memry by pressing ENTER. USING THE ALARMS The alarm will sund if an ech is received which is shallwer than the upper alarm setting r deeper than the lwer alarm setting. T view the setting f the upper (shallw) alarm, press the up key. Return t sunder by pressing ENTER. T view the setting f the lwer (Deep) alarm, press the dwn key. The setting can be altered by using the up and dwn keys. The new value is entered and the unit returned t the ech sunder by pressing the ENTER key. T enable the alarm, press the up and dwn keys simultaneusly. A bell symbl will appear t shw the alarm is activated. When an alarm cnditin is apparent the bell symbl will flash and the audible alarm will sund. Pressing up and dwn keys again will disable the alarm. All parameters set int the unit are held in memry even when the pwer is remved. 4

4: LOG 4:1 INSTALLING THE PADDLEWHEEL UNIT The paddle wheel shuld be installed at a pint in the hull where:- 1) It is immersed at all attitudes under pwer r sail. 2) The blades f the paddle wheel are presented with a smth flw f water crrespnding t the vessels speed thrugh the water. On displacement hulls this is usually abut amidships, but n planing hulls it shuld be as far aft as pssible. 3) It shuld be easily accessible in the bilges fr cleaning and laying up. A blanking cap is prvided t seal the skin fitting when the paddle wheel is remved. 4) It is nt vulnerable t damage frm unfrgiving surfaces such as trailers and lifting slings. Drill a hle f 42mm diameter t take the skin fitting and use cnventinal methds fr sealing. It is advisable t avid the use f mastic materials - use a frm f prprietary silicn sealant. The securing nut has a grve n its underside which shuld als be filled with sealing cmpund. Finger tighten this nut nly. After the sealing cmpund has enter wipe ff the excess and encapsulate the whle assembly in G.P.R. as shwn in the diagram. Take care t ensure that a minimum f 20mm f thread is left uncvered. The paddle wheel unit can nw be slid int the husing, with the arrw pinting alng the centre line f the vessel. It is recmmended that a little silicn grease be smeared ver the rubber O ring t keep the unit free. 20mm minimum HULL 5

4:2 CONNECTING THE DISPLAY Cnnect the black wire t the negative supply and the red wire t the psitive via a 1/4 amp fuse. Plug the paddle wheel unit int the scket n the display unit. 4:3 LOG OPERATION When switched n the display will mmentarily display the ttal distance and then revert t reading speed. The speed is shwn in nautical miles per hur and is reliable up t 25.0 knts. (At higher speeds cavitatin arund the paddle wheel may reduce accuracy). A shrt press f the SPEED key will turn the backlight n and ff. A shrt press f the TRIP key will display the Trip distance. T reset the trip t zer first select trip by pressing the TRIP key. When the trip distance is shwn press and hld the TRIP key until the display shws F. The trip is then reset t zer. The trip distance is shwn in tenths f nautical miles up t 99.9nm and in single miles up t 999nm thereafter. A shrt press f the TOTAL key will display the ttal distance. The unit will display the ttal distance travelled t 999 nautical miles. This cunter cannt be reset. A lng press f the SPEED key will return t the speed display CALIBRATION The calibratin is preset in the factry. The type f hull and the psitin f the paddlewheel may affect the perfrmence f the unit. If the lg under r ver reads then the calibratin factr can be adjusted t cmpensate. Enter the Engineering mde by first turning ff the pwer supply t the instrument. Press and hld the SPEED key whilst the pwer supply is turned back n. The wrd ENG will appear n the display. Press either the TRIP r TOTAL keys t display the calibratin setting. This is nrmally 100(%) when it leaves the factry. Press TRIP t increase r TOTAL t decrease the number. Each press will increment r decrement the number by 1%. When the desired calibratin factr is attained a lng press f the SPEED key will return the unit t nrmal peratin. Bth speed and distance are calibrated simultaneusly. The calibratin factr is stred in a nn-vlatile memry and is retained when pwer is ff. 6

5: COMPASS 5:1 INSTALLING THE SENSOR. The sensr measures the directin f the Earth s weak magnetic field, and s is sensitive t ther magnetic fields which can affect the unit s accuracy. It shuld therefre be psitined carefully. Select a psitin as far as pssible away frm large ferrus bjects such as engines, and items such as DC mtrs r ludspeakers which have pwerful permanent magnets in them. Check als fr small ferrus bjects clse t the munting lcatin such as screws, nails, hinges etc. These can becme magnetised and cause errrs. When a likely lcatin has been fund, a check fr reasnable accuracy can be made with a hand bearing cmpass t cnfirm its suitability. The magnetic sensr itself is gimballed within the husing. T accmmdate pitch and rll mtins mst effectively, munt the sensr as near t hrizntal as pssible. Fr best perfrmance in rugh weather cnditins, it is als advisable t munt the sensr in a psitin (usually amidships) that minimises lateral acceleratins due t pitch and rll. Avid munting the sensr high abve the water line because ding s als increases pitch and rll acceleratins. The sensr is waterprf t CFR-46 standard. Ensure the sensr des nt becme submerged. Psitin the sensr and mark and drill pilt hles fr the munting screws t allw the sensr t be rtated t align it exactly with the vessel s axis. Nw munt the sensr carefully in psitin using nn-magnetic screws. The rtatinal psitin f the sensr shuld be chsen t ensure that the arrw pints as clse as pssible fre-and-aft. 5:2 CONNECTING THE DISPLAY ENTER COMPASS Cruiser ALARM BLEEPER Figure 1 7

5:3 COMPASS OPERATION When pwer is applied t the Cruiser Cmpass, it executes a cmprehensive internal test rutine. It then displays the heading. When first pwered up, the displayed heading may nt be crrect until the cmpass alignment is dne. A typical display is shwn n Figure 2. SWITCHING THE BACKLIGHTING Backlighting is prvided t allw the unit t be seen at night. The backlighting is switched n and ff by a single press f ENTER. Magnetic heading shwn O ENTER Switch Backlighting Heading 263 degrees MAG. MAG. COMPASS Cruiser Figure 2 - Nrmal peratin display CHANGING THE DAMPING When the vessel is affected by rapid variatins f heading in rugh seas, a mre heavily damped display can be selected instead f the nrmal lightly damped display. Press ENTER and up tgether t switch between heavily and lightly damped mdes. The display shws L (fr light damping), A (fr Average damping), r H (fr Heavy damping) fr tw secnds after the keys are released t indicate which mde has been selected. Successive presses f the tw keys switches between the three damping settings. ASSISTED STEERING Assisted steering means using the Cruiser Cmpass t shw errrs frm a chsen heading, and the directin t steer t bring the vessel back t the chsen heading, which is marked by the lubber line at all times. When the vessel s heading is within the pre-set errr limits, the dead-ahead indicatr is lit t shw that all is well (see Figure 3), and n steering adjustment is required. This is the display when assisted steering is started. 8

SETTING THE DESIRED HEADING Bring the vessel t the desired heading, and press up and dwn tgether t lg that heading. The display changes as shwn n Figure 3. The lgged heading is the heading shwn when the up and dwn buttns are FIRST pressed. The dead-ahead symbl indicates that the vessel s heading is within the errr setting. 9

SWITCHING ASSISTED STEERING OFF At any time, while Assisted Steering is perating, pressing up tgether switches it ff. and dwn HEADING ALARM When Assisted Steering is in peratin, an alarm can be set t sund whenever the heading exceeds a pre-set amunt frm a chsen heading. The chsen heading is the heading lgged when assisted steering was selected. Alarm peratin is inhibited when Assisted Steering is ff. The alarm, when set, sunds whenever the heading is at r utside the alarm setting t prt r starbard. ENTER COMPASS Cruiser FIGURE 5 - Alarm Bundaries set at +/-9 The alarm setting can be altered at any time during nrmal peratin by pressing up t increase its value, r dwn t decrease it. The alarm bundaries are shwn by the steering chevrns, as shwn n Figure 5, fr tw secnds when the key is released, whereupn the display returns t the nrmal steering display. SETTING OR STOPPING THE ALARM During assisted steering, press up t switch the alarm n and dwn it ff. The bell symbl shws when the alarm is n. t switch Whenever the alarm is n, and the heading during assisted steering is utside the bundaries set at the desired heading, the alarm sunds, and the bell symbl flashes. ENGINEERING Engineering settings means thse adjustments which seldm need changing, but which affect hw the unit perates. The settings (as are all thse which can be selected in nrmal peratin t) are stred even when pwer is discnnected. There are three perating characteristics which can be set in Engineering: Magnetic r True heading display; Magnetic Variatin; and Cmpass errr (deviatin) cmpensatin settings. 10

Engineering mde is entered by hlding dwn the ENTER buttn while turning n the pwer. The Engineering mde displays En (fr Engineering) fr tw secnds when the buttn is released. When the tw secnds is up, the Magnetic variatin is shwn in degrees. The present set-up is shwn as MAG. (fr magnetic readings) r TRUE (fr true readings). Nte that the magnetic variatin affects nly true readings, and need nt be crrected as described belw if magnetic bearing readings are required. Any f the fllwing settings can be dne when in Engineering. If mre than ne different setting is t be dne, it is necessary nly t return via the En display between different adjustments r settings, as described belw. ADJUSTING MAGNETIC VARIATION The Earth s magnetic variatin varies frm year t year, and frm place t place. The apprpriate variatin value can be fund by reference t Almanacs, maps, r charts. The variatin is the ffset f magnetic Nrth frm true Nrth. If the Magnetic Nrth (the variatin) is West f true Nrth, enter it as a psitive number. Cnversely, if it is quted as East f true Nrth, enter a negative variatin value. If nt already in Engineering ( En displayed) hld dwn the ENTER buttn while turning n the pwer t put the unit int the Engineering mde. The display shws En (fr Engineering) fr tw secnds. The display then changes as shwn in Figure 6 t shw the stred magnetic variatin and whether the unit is perating in Magnetic r true mdes (Figure 6 shws Magnetic peratin, and 0 an Eastward variatin f 6.3 ). ENTER MAG. COMPASS Cruiser FIGURE 6 - Magnetic Variatin Display Psitive numbers represent Westward variatins, and negative numbers (as shwn n Figure 6) represent Eastward variatins. Each press f up r dwn alters the stred variatin in steps f 0.1.If the ttal variatin is greater than + 9.9, the fractinal part f the angle is altered, but cannt be shwn. 11

Press up r dwn t change the stred variatin value t the crrect value. Nte that changing the magnetic variatin has n effect n the accuracy f the cmpass s cmpensatin (see page 7). If it is desired t end Engineering adjustments, press ENTER t return t nrmal heading indicatin, using the revised magnetic variatin value. MAGNETIC OR TRUE READOUT If nt already in Engineering ( En displayed), hld dwn the ENTER buttn while turning n the pwer t put the unit int Engineering mde. Press ENTER and up tgether t switch between Magnetic and True display f the cmpass readings. When True is selected TRUE is displayed, and the variatin shwn is used t crrect the readings made by the sensr. When Magnetic is selected, MAG. is displayed as shwn n Figure 6. In Magnetic indicatin mde the variatin value is ignred. If it is desired t end Engineering adjustments, press ENTER t return t nrmal heading indicatin. COMPASS ERROR (DEVIATION) CORRECTIONS In cmmn with all magnetic cmpasses, the presence f magnetic bjects in the vessel distrts the earth s magnetic field nearby, and can affect the accuracy f readings by different amunts at varius pints f the cmpass. Detecting and crrecting these errrs is knwn as Cmpass Swinging Cmpass swinging in the Cruiser Cmpass is achieved by sailing the vessel in a circle at a cnstant turn rate in still water, s it is best t select calm cnditins. During the cnstant rate turn, the errrs are detected in the instrument and lgged. When a full set f values frm 360 turn are available, the crrectins the cmpass deviatins are calculated and permanently stred. The factry default deviatin settings are all zer, s if it is fund that there are significant errrs at sme pints f the cmpass, these errrs shuld be cmpensated by swinging the cmpass. Cmpass swinging in the Cruiser Cmpass has tw phases: establishing a cnstant turn rate cntinuing at the same rate t lg the deviatins Cmpass swinging is an Engineering functin. T enter Engineering, hld dwn the ENTER buttn while turning n the pwer. The display shws En (fr Engineering) fr tw secnds, and then the stred magnetic variatin. Nw press all the keys tgether t start Cmpass swinging. 12

The swing must be perfrmed by sailing CLOCKWISE in a circle at a cnstant rate. (If the turn is anticlckwise, the turn bars all pint left, t indicate that crrect results cannt be achieved). The display shws the turn rate in degrees per secnd. Any fixed value between 0.5 and 2 / secnd is acceptable, and the mst imprtant thing t achieve is a CONSTANT rate within this range. It can usually be achieved with a fixed thrttle setting and a fixed rudder setting. If the rate f turn is t fast, the steering bars flw t the left (t indicate slw dwn ), where as they flw t the right ( speed up ) if the rate f turn is t slw. When a rate between 0.5 and 2 / secnd is settled n, the turn bars return th their rest psitin, withut mving, t indicate that the turn rate is satisfactry. At 0.5 / secnd a full 360 degrees will, f curse, take 12 minutes t execute, and at 2 / secnd a full 360 will take nly 3 minutes. The accuracy f the cmpensatin is better at lwer turn rates. When a steady turn rate has been established, press ENTER t enter the errr lgging phase. The display changes t shw a rtating symbl and a prgress cunt, starting at 9. All the previus cmpensatin values are immediately cleared. If it desired simply t clear the settings, simply press any key during the swing t return t Engineering. As the cnstant-rate turn prceeds, the prgress indicatin cunts dwn. It is vital t maintain the previusly-chsen cnstant turn rate during this phase. When the prgress indicatin falls t zer (after turning just ver 360), the swing is cmplete, and the cmpass deviatin values are autmatically calculated and stred. The display returns t nrmal Cmpass mde t shw that the swinging is finished and that it is n lnger necessary t cntinue the cnstant-rate turn. HEADING ADJUSTMENT It may be necessary t make a minr adjustment t the sensr alignment t ensure that the Cmpass crrectly measures the vessel s heading. If an adjustment is fund t be needed, accurately pint the vessel t a knwn heading. Either MAG. r TRUE is displayed t remind the user which physical alignment f the vessel is t be used. If the display des nt shw the knwn heading, the sensr unit must be rtated slightly t bring the display int alignment. Slacken the sensr unit s munting screws sufficiently t allw the unit t be turned, and rtate it until the display shws the knwn heading. Then re-tighten the sensr unit s munting screws t lck the cmpass calibratin at that psitin. 6: WIND 6:1 PRE-TEST OF INSTRUMENT Befre munting check that the instrument is cmplete and undamaged. Plug the sensr int the display unit and apply 12 vlts. Gently spin the wind cups and the wind vane and check the peratin f the display.

6:2 INSTALLING THE MASTHEAD UNIT The masthead sensr unit is designed fr mast munting and is supplied with 20 metres f cable. Chse a psitin where the masthead unit can receive an unbstructed flw f air frm all directins. The masthead unit must be substantially hrizntal, hwever the rientatin with respect t the bat is unimprtant. Fur munting blcks tgether with fur stainless steel self tapping screws are supplied t screw the masthead unit t a metal mast. If the masthead unit is t be fitted t a wden mast suitable screws shuld be used. After the masthead unit is securely fitted run the cable t the display unit and plug int the scket n the display. D nt reduce any excess length f the cable by cutting ff the plug, but stw the excess neatly. If the cable is nt lng enugh, 5 r 20 metre extensin cables are available. 6:3 CONNECTING THE DISPLAY Cnnect the black wire t the negative supply and the red t the psitive via a 1/4 amp fuse. Plug the masthead unit int the scket n the display unit. 6:4 WIND OPERATION The Cruiser wind system can display wind speed measurements in miles per hur (MPH), nautical miles per hur (knts, shwn as KTS), and metres per secnd (m/s). Press ENTER and up tgether t switch between knts, miles per hur, and metres per secnd. The chice is always saved s the unit perates as set whenever it is pwered up again. WINDVANE DEAD-AHEAD ALIGNMENT It is always necessary t enter the dead-ahead psitin f the vane when it is first installed n the vessel s the display shws the relative wind directin crrectly. Setting the dead-ahead alignment is achieved by pressing all three buttns tgether when the vane is aligned with the stainless steel tip pinting frward alng the axis f the vessel. The reading is stred when the last buttn is released, and s it is imprtant that the vane is crrectly aligned at that mment. CHANGING THE POINTER STYLE The pinter style can be either a blck r windex style. Press up and dwn tgether t switch between the styles. When the blck pinter is displayed, up increases its width and dwn decreases its width. The up and dwn keys have n effect when the windex pinter style is displayed. As with the speed setting, the final setting is stred s the unit perates as set when ever it is pwered up again. Backlight The backlight is switched by pressing ENTER alne. 14
