Recent construction starts such as the Shell ethane cracker plant project in Pennsylvania and MarkWest s recent announcement that they had received approval to build a natural gas processing plant in Smith Township is fueling the demand for truck equipment that can support these construction efforts. In other news, according to FTR Transportation Intelligence report, the North American Class 8 truck production will hit 300,000 units in 2018, a level only seen once in the past ten years. 2 A Letter from Jason Just like our routines change with the weather, we at J&J, are going through changes as well. We are preparing for the future more than ever as we continue to build a team that is determined to increase market share, improve quality, become more competitive, and provide exceptional customer service. We have assigned new industry-experienced managers throughout the organization including in engineering, purchasing, and production. This has been an ongoing succession initiative that ensures our work will continue without interruption. We are focusing our energy on building on the brand you have grown to trust. The sales team is concentrating on working with our customers, dealers, and distributors in providing them with products that are built to last and built for the long haul. After attending the NTEA Executive Leadership Summit in Chicago, IL last month, we returned to the office with great optimism for Class 5-8 truck chassis production is expected to grow despite the leveling economy. Our customer and dealer feedback are also in line with the industry projections which means J&J is ramping up and planning for another good year. With this demand, J&J has released the 2018 Dealer Spring Buy Program to help assure that you have production capacity when you need it. While we are already booking orders for end users and fleets in early 2018, we have set aside planned capacity to support dealers bringing in their spring inventory. Our goals are to continue to meet our customers expectations for on-time delivery. Jim has been with us for 34 years and started by working on the shop floor. News Bytes From Our OEM Partners Mack Trucks benefits of automated manual transmissions (AMTs) are clear. Heavy Construction That s why the majority of new Mack trucks sold in the United States and Canada are spec d with Mack mdrive AMTs. AMTs are proving popular with fleets for several reasons. Peterbilt Motors Company announced the availability of the new 12-speed Semi Elliptical Eaton Endurant transmission in Models 579 and 567. A cooler-free precision lubrication system, encapsulated sensors and wiring, and standard 8-bolt PTO opening location, and a 750,000-mile lube change interval are among some of the key features. The Endurant also offers a 5-year / 750,000 mile warranty, and a 3-year/350,000-mile clutch warranty. Scott Newhouse, chief engineer, stated endurant has a wide range of benefits including its light weight design and longer service intervals. Its integration with the column mounted shifter will make it a top choice for both fleet and Volvo Trucks debuted at the North American Commercial Vehicle Show its new interiors for the Volvo VHD series, bringing exceptional driver comfort and productivity features to its UltraLight vocational lineup. Volvo VHD 300 daycab and VHD 400 regional sleeper model interiors feature LED lighting, and extensive connectivity points to support a driver s daily work. Western Star is now offering new options on their trucks. Michelin X multi D tires are avaliable for the 4700, 4800, 4900 and 5700XE trucks. New forward lighting option for the 4700, 4800 and 4900 models, and in-cab 4-battery box is available for 5700XE day Transformer Body cabs. Like many companies in our industry, J&J s management team was at an end of generation phase, with many of our senior managers entering the twilight of their careers. As part of our strategic planning, in 2014, J&J began having open discussions with senior managers annually, to discuss their end of career goals and retirement time frames. Any managers that fell into the 5 years or less retirement window, were tagged on J&J s organization chart with a retirement window. Having retirement windows publicly posted on the organization chart did two things: one, it helped the employee begin retirement planning for real; and two, it helped senior management focus on succession planning well in advance of actual retirement, knowing that substantial industry experience and knowledge would be lost with the employee s retirement. Last Piece of the Puzzle Last August, J&J hired Eric Brown, P.E., as a successor for Tom Pletcher, J&J s current engineering manager and 40 year employee. Tom spent his career with J&J and was steadily promoted up through the organization for his work ethic, extensive product and computer system knowledge and quite frankly his faith. A man of God, Tom s knowledge and manner of living has made him a tremendous asset to the organization both in his character and business acumen. Tom was one of the primary architects of J&J s business information system, the primary estimating and costing platform being used by J&J. Eric Brown worked for J&J, starting right out of college for 11 years before an 11 year stint in the defense industry. In his early career, Eric was the primary designer of some of J&J s most popular product models. Eric brings a wealth of external design and manufacturing experience back to the organization and will be a great asset to the team. Employees Earn NATC Certifications Tim Mateljan, Propane Product Manager (pictured left), and Barry Durstine, Quality Control Inspector, recently completed a 3-day Certified Registered Inspectors training that took place in Woodbury, NJ. The training included two days of classroom work and one field day for hands-on sessions. The training included actual inspection of cargo tanks and simulated vessels as required in CFR 180,407. As J&J continues to expand its propane product line, it was necessary that the company maintain certified inspectors on staff who can administer audits and confirm proper testing, inspection, and documentation for J&J propane vessels.
