1 The Long Hauler The Latest News from J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers Volume XX Issue Beefing Up The Workforce New Wetline Systems Challenging times require guerilla recruitment strategies. L ike many companies, Somerset Welding & Steel is facing a high number of baby boomers leaving the industry. Finding the workers to replace these valuable individuals is oftentimes challenging. Here at Somerset Welding, we have an HR department that is focused on making sure we continue to hire the qualified personnel we need to keep up with the work demand. However, this can be difficult especially in a rural area like ours. In this effort, they have had to find other creative employment recruitment methods. Fifteen years ago newspaper print ads were the gold standard. With the onset of the internet, online ad placements became more effective, productive, and successful. Social media is another avenue we are pursuing and most recently, our HR department has found good results with local TV advertising using our own employees in the spots. Somerset Welding was the first employer to use this medium in our area. Still this was not enough. According to Shawn Kaufman, Riggs HR Director, Since we can t buy talent, we ve had to make our own when it comes to welders and mechanics. As a result, SWS has teamed up with local VoTech schools to run training programs at our shop locations. The classes are offered for free through a state grant and J&J Foreman, Matt Matusko, assists with the development of the course curriculum and the teaching of the classes. The training runs for 5 weeks (200 hours), with a heavy emphasis on hands-on welding. This effort has been quite successful and the programs are ongoing. Shawn and Joe Caldrone, Director of Operations, are scheduled to give a seminar on this topic at NTEA Work Truck Show in March. We think attendees will find lots of useful information to take home to their own companies. T he staff at the J&J Truck Equipment facility has been busy installing wetline systems in 15 tractors that will eventually be paired with J&J steel push out trailers. Bill Riggs, president of Somerset Welding & Steel and Craig Eckenrode, the shop superintendent recently took the opportunity to check out the excellent work being done by the J&J technicians. Once completed, the J&J Steel Push Out (SPO) trailers will be used to transport solid waste in New Jersey by a reclamation center which is comprised of 900 acres. 2 A Letter from Bill Contract Launch with Sourcewll A s a member of the Baby Boomer generation (1951), I am closing in on that 12-month window of turning to the next chapter of life activity after 46 years with one family owned company. Our truck body and trailer industry is an important part of many industries. Mining, construction, solid waste, oil & gas, municipal government, agriculture, utilities, iron and steel, and many others that use trucks and trailers every day. Part of this journey with J&J has provided me the opportunity to see many parts of the world of trucking in countries like Russia, China, Mongolia, Israel, Venezuela, most of Europe, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, and several others. Seeing other cultures and the trucks and vehicles used in these countries always makes me appreciate the important role our industry plays in every country in the world. Like most members of our industry, attracting and retaining a qualified workforce will be an on-going opportunity as well as a challenge. Somerset Welding and Steel considers this topic to be number 1 in our future planning and we believe that efficient, state-of-the- art training tools, techniques, and technology will be a necessary long-term investment in our future. 4 News Bytes From Our OEM Partners Freightliner Trucks new Cascadia was awarded the prestigious honor of Best Transportation Material Hauler Technology at the annual Best of CES awards ceremony at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show. The transportation Technology category is awarded to the best technology related to the ever-advancing science of getting from here to there. The truck debuted at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Monday, and is the first SAE Level 2 automated truck to enter series production in North America. Hino Trucks XL Series has been coupled with the versatile Century 3212 G2 that is designed with Crane Service Body the capability of towing a wide range of vehicles, from passenger cars, vans, city tractors and motor homes. With multi-positional rear jacks, dual 15,000 lb. planetary winches and a 116-ton recovery boom the Century 3212 G2 this unit was designed to handle a wide variety of recovery jobs. The Hino XL Series will be offered in a hot of straight truck adn tractor configurations ranging from a GVWR of 33,000 to 60,000 lbs. and GCWR up to 66,000 lbs. with max performance of 360 horsepower and 1,150 lb.-ft. torque. Kenworth Truck Company and Toyota Motor North America are collaborating to develop 10 Pressure Vacuum Tank zero-emission Kenworth T680s powered by Toyota hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrains. The Kenworth T680s with the Toyota hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrains combine hydrogen gas and air to produce electricity. The electricity powers electric motors to move the trucks, while also charging the lithiumion batteries to optimize performance as needed. Sophisticated power maangement systems will apportion the electrical power from the fuel cells to the motors, batteries, and other components, such as electrified power steering and brake air compressors. The hydrogen fuel cell electric powered Kenworth T680s will have a range of over 300 miles under normal drayage operating conditions. Peterbilt Motors plans to team with suppliers Meritor and TransPower to build a medium-duty Semi Elliptical electric chassis that could underpin trucks used for regional freight, local delivery and garbage collection. Peterbilt joins a growing number of truck makers focusing on medium-duty applications for battery-powered electric trucks. Adding the medium-duty platform to our electric truck lineup was a natural evolution of our development plan, said Jason Skoog, Peterbilt general manager. Volvo Trucks announced that it will introduce all-electric Volvo VNR regional-haul demonstrators UltraLight in California this year, operating in distribution, regional-haul and drayage operations. Sales of the VNR Electric in North America will begin in The VNR Electric demonstration units will be based on the proven propulsion and energy storage technology currently being used in the Volvo FE Electric, and builds on the Volvo Group s accumulated expertise in electrified transport solutions. Introduction of the Volvo VNR Electric models are part of an innovative partnership, known as LIGHTS between the Volvo Group, California s South Coast Air Quality Management District, and industry leaders in transportation and electrical charging infrastructure. This ultra-lightweight engine increases payload capacity, which boosts profitability for vocational customers. They enhanced 4700 also has additional upfit-friendly improvements, including updates to the electrical system - such as the addition of a third Power Distribution Module - and improved interface connections on the back floor of the cab, as well as four new options for trailer connections. The 4700 is a workhorse, and our customers want it to get on the job as fast as possible. 5 News Updates Chassis Arrival Dates: Why they matter. A s J&J gears up for a busy spring and summer, we thought it would be a good idea to revisit the importance of accurate chassis arrival dates. Managing a production schedule is difficult. To salesmen, customers, and individuals that are not involved in work order processing and production planning, it may seem like voodoo and witchcraft, seasoned with a little crazy. It is not. Production planning is based on 4 things: 1. Labor availability. 2. Raw material availability. 3. Long lead time component availability (critical path). 4. Chassis arrival date and VIN (to identify chassis by J&J work order). To describe something complex, simply, J&J s production schedule is based on chassis arrival date and the first available production slot (labor) after the chassis arrival date. In certain cases, production may be scheduled based on a long lead time component delivery date (critical path), if that date occurs after the chassis arrival date and after first available production date. J&J has control of items 1 3 in the list above. J&J does not have control of number 4 chassis arrival and VIN. You have control over accurate chassis arrival dates and accurate VIN. Bad chassis arrival dates cause major scheduling problems. The first time a chassis arrival date is missed, the corresponding work order rolls back in the schedule one week and a good order (chassis arrived) is pulled forward. If chassis arrival misses the second week, the work order is pulled from the production schedule and placed in Unscheduled purgatory until chassis arrival can be validated; then the work order is placed in the next available production slot. The next available slot may be significantly later than the original scheduled date. You may ask, Why do you do that? It s not fair. J&J processes and produces hundreds of work orders a month. Bad chassis arrival dates wreak havoc on the production schedule. Our answer, It is not fair to customers with work orders that have good chassis arrivals to allow schedule churn for poor communication.
